Like a 2D im-sim. Phenomenal
I wanted to thumbs up this game but occasionally the gameplay is just idiotic and the puzzles rely on going back and forth.
For example saving villagers is just such a dumb chore most of the time. They can only be freed from the shackles by fire, then making them to follow you around is tedious. I picked up a villager who couldnt climb a vine and went back to get the second one who was in shackles. Had no fire nearby so I ran back again for the 3rd time (the first too was to bring earth element to make vines). So I throw fire at the shackles and they explode throwing flaming wood everywhere. Vine catches fire and the first villager standing next to it, lets himself burn to death instead of moving one step away.
Not to mention the fire throwing aspect itself. When i first unlocked fire i figured why not throw flaming bolts at the swordsmen? Nah, it just bounces right off. Why should their clothes burn?
Unlocking abilities is cool, so is upgrading them, taking the element you want to upgrade to that statue and throwing it in. But the fun ends there since upgrading offers just a tiny advantage. For example the Fire jump from 3,6 meters goes to 4. Or the vine creation from 4 meters to 5 or something. Upgrading the Pillar abilities or whatever their name is, is just as tedious and more. You need to gather a lot of it, just to be able to upgrade Fetch Elements from 3,78 to 4,2, then to 4,8 and so on.
One of the things you must do to score more pillar points in every stage, is a) remain undetected for some reason and b) dont kill the foes that burned your home village, burned you alive, killed your friends, enslave innocents, buried you alive etc. Why?
Although b looks easy since you cannot harm them; fire bounces off, if their O2 is depleted they just go to sleep etc. Only way for them to die is if they jump from terror to their deaths or they're trapped in a fire you started.
Anyway it looked like a nice idea for a game and you can enjoy it, but personally I dont anymore. I'll just return to it occasionally to see where it leads.
VARY GOOD
Very imaginative and unique game, it's a lot of fun
This game was a creative delight that reminds one of the GBA titles of yesteryear. The elemental aspects of the game in particular are reminiscent of one of the Star Wars games on that system, with regards to the way the force was used. That's what Wildfire reminds me of. Super cool game; it's a great fortune that indie developers are delivering us the imaginative goods with games like this these days.
The concept is nice. My only issue is the lack of skill points. You need to redo the game 3 times to get all the skill points allowing you to complete the skill trees. It's a linear game with no replayability, so there is no reason to do it again 3 times.
Yes !
This is a really solid game. The pixel art is well-done and the animations smooth. The platforming feels weighty and satisfying. The stealth is well-explained and excuted.
Plus, the elemental fire effect is really fun to play with.
Fun, little gem of a stealth-like platformer with elemental interactions that could benefit from a level editor
Wildfire is a delightful stealth game centered around elemental interactions, reminiscent of titles like Noita and Magicka. In this game, you play as a newly awakened witch who harnesses the power of three elements: fire, water, and earth (grass), with skills that unlock as you progress.
The Good
The core mechanic of Wildfire is its elemental interaction system, which operates on basic physics. You can burn grass and melt ice as you walk through them with a fire spell (or when your body is ablaze). Objects and enemies can be set afloat with water bubbles, and forest fires can be extended by throwing grass and vines. Discovering these combinations is a joy, and even after 10 hours in, I'm still finding new ways elements interact with each other.
Though Wildfire fashions itself as a platformer stealth game, it is fundamentally a platformer puzzle game. Enemies and the environment are obstacles to be solved rather than simply combated, especially considering the only ways to kill them is through fall damage or high temperature. You can choose to run and gun or stealthily navigate through levels. Each level offers objectives that sometimes require abandoning stealth for a more direct approach, especially during speed runs.
The game also supports coop, which doubles the fun as you and a friend experiment with elemental magic together.
The Less than Good
But what about the negative reviews?
They seem to stem from players who aim to obsessively complete all objectives in a single run. Many objectives are optional, and fortunately, you can revisit levels to complete specific objectives without redoing everything.
Wildfire encourages trial and error, much like other puzzle games, making each run a chance to try something new. That said, I understand the frustration of objectives being tied to skill points, as they are needed to unlock new abilities and there are no other means to progress.
Where Wildfire falls short is in its approach to extending game duration. The current system relies on players redoing levels for perfect scores, which can become repetitive. The addition of a level editor would greatly enhance the game, allowing for player-created levels and extending its replay value. This would offer endless opportunities for creativity and new ways to figure out elemental interactions.
Verdict
With a price less than 10 USD (2 USD during Summer Sale 2024), Wildfire is a fun, little gem that you can enjoy solo or with a friend - a delightful experience worth revisiting once in a while.
LOVED this game. Like a 2D assassin's creed but minimal fighting and relies more on sneaking around. Plus with some magic to manipulate things around you. It was a great 8ish hours spent. Maybe more cause some of the puzzles were more difficult. Overall, great purchase and will play again! Going to try the coop soon too!
