ALL TIME FLIGHT SIM CLASSIC
Includes Mig 29 and Hornet
No other words can describe. 4.0 was the only one better!
Not really a fan, although fan of the genre.
God, I miss old F-22 TAW.

If you want a hard simulator and Realistic one and don't care about the graphic falcon is for you!
Also i recommend it because since back to microprose they are working to make it better and their customers service is the best!
Now its playable, very cool, great to see an update for this classic!

Like 4.0, I decided to try this with a genuine 30-year old 486 to see what the hype was about, and it is actually extremely advanced for it's era, not many games had multiple campaigns or a full roster of enemies and allies who would interact with you in a full 3d world. This game still suffers from alot of period-issues and is probably one of the hardest things to ever get installed on a computer. No seriously, I had to spend 4 hours figuring out how to get past the 'Falcon 3.0 requires 612k of conventional memory' and get the game to run, even if it's pretty simple to configure it's one of those games which came before protected memory and windows so you're going to need to understand how to use DOS to run it on a pure DOS system. Which nobody does.
Besides this the game isn't as fully sim-fledged as 4.0 or BMS is, there are no clickable cockpits or kneeboards but there are 20 or so keybinds to read from the reference guide and you still need to memorize and understand how the radar modes work. When in doubt, read the training manual and go through the missions, the game becomes much easier. You'll still need to carefully study each mission, if you're going to do something like destroy warning radars on a heavily defended Iraqi air base then you'll need to actually draw the layout of the base, understand how to evade radar signals, and make sure you have the right loadout before you get started. Despite being more arcadey, it is still a substantially difficult game to master.
The dogfighting and combat is extremely satisfying, despite the game having a very poor view distance you can still easily find enemies if you use the padlock function and attempt to keep your eyes on the enemy. The dog fighting AI isn't as refined as it was in 4.0, but it's fun enough to be considered engaging. On the other hand, the overtly advertised 'high-fidelity' flight model which requires a math-coprocessor isn't really too good, it's half-broken and feels very floaty, doesn't properly work when landing, and is overall quite disappointing. To alleviate this, you can switch to the 'high quality' flight model, which is just as good.
I know people tend to hate on older graphics (especially in the sim community), but this looks more appealing than 4.0 in my eyes. 4.0 still has that late 90s 3d feel, it hasn't aged well these days versus the graphics of 3.0, which looks more similar to pixel art. I think this was one of the better looking DOS games, the awesome menu screens make up for it.
Overall, I had no issues running the game on an original system, if you want to try this out on 86box then I'd recommend a 66mhz 486 with an ISA or PCI graphics card. This will prevent the intro crawls from going too fast like they do in DOSBOX. I would recommend it.
This game is fantastic. It does several things that modern day flight sims have yet to recreate.
- Great manual. I suggest you read the whole thing and maybe take notes.
- Easy to play "sim". You fly multiple types of missions from takeoff to landing. Plan the missions, load up the weapons, find and identify the enemy (and avoid getting shot down), and employ your weapons. This provides a lot of things to learn but none of it is complicated (unlike Falcon 4, BMS, DCS).
- Several theaters of war to play in.
- Squadron management. Your pilots have stats, they get tired, they can gain experience, they can die. This is one of the coolest features in this game. Think xcom but with pilots and jets.
- You have limited resources. Limited number of jets, missiles, bombs, and even pilots. All of these become a limiting factor later in the campaign. Failing missions and wasting ammo has consequences.
- Dynamic campaign. Each mission is generated based on the current needs of the war. Every campaign will be different and there several campaigns to try. All with varying win conditions. This provides a huge amount of variety and replay-ability.
[*]Oh.. and there are 3 different flyable aircraft. More variety.
If you don't mind the retro graphics and are comfortable spending a bit of time getting Dosbox and controls configured then this game offers an experience and game-play that hasn't been recreated since.
You can check out some game-play here.

It was ok...
If you set your theater to the Kurile Isalands and then click on the head of the guy on the left in the main room, then you can pick your own mission!
For those of you who don't mind a learning curve, and are willing to spend some time to get good at a game, or to accept playing at lower difficulty settings if you don't want to learn all the details, I have to reccomend this one. Be sure to look through the manuals to learn to keys, and find the quick reference cards for each of the aircraft.
This was among the first serious "study sims", and although it may not include all of the detail and realism of Falcon 4 BMS, for it's time it was good, and as the series moved on it increased in realism and accuracy. On the upside, you'll find that there is a dynamic campaign that can be directly influenced by your actions. In fact your success or failure seems to disproportionately effect the outcome of the campaign. There is varied terrain, as well as can be represented in the simulator, changing weather, and so on. Unfortunately over time I have found that the missions become somewhat predictable. There are only so many "templates" and although the units involved may be randomized the starting positions are all the same. You'll soon discover that although the unit viewer shows a wide variety of ground units, you'll never encounter most of them. For example I've played this simulator since 1993 or so and have never seen a tank other than the M1 Abrams and the T-72. Sure the T-64 and M60 are shown in the unit viewer but you'll never see them, and the same goes for all the SAM units.
Falcon 3.0 itself may, oddly enough, be the least accurate of all the sims in this package. It features a rendition of the F-16A model cockpit, the ability to carry AIM-120 missiles not fitted to the F-16 until the C series or various Mid-Life-Update programs for the A model not done until well into the 90's, does not feature the AIM-7 Sparrow which was carried on the "A" versions, and gives you the ability to, in many cases, carry more weapons than the real jet could actually be fitted with. The selection between the "A" and "C" hud in the difficulty screen is purely cosmetic.
MiG-29 came next, and is a much more realistic simulator, although it's a little unclear to me which variation of the MiG-29 the developers actually wanted to simulate. Information may have been relatively scarce in the west. For example, it appears to feature the unreliable radar of the MiG-29A, and the internal jammer of the MiG-29S (Sometimes called MiG-29C) together with guided AGMs that I don't think either variant could carry.
Hornet was the last in the sim, and features much more accurate ordnance, a quite accurate recreation of an F/A-18 cockpit, such that a second screen was used to show the lower portions of the cockpit, carrier operations, and the then ongoing Balkans theater of conflict.
I love this game! They put a great deal of effort into this game which was state-of-the-art at the time. I wish the Falcon team were still making combat aircraft simulators like this, but hopefully Falcon 5 can capture the magic that Falcon Gold did for its time: provide a realistic simulation of top-of-the-line combat aircraft.
this isnt falcon 4.0 as described when i bnoughht
Ok, as in my other reviews for such sims you need to ask yourself the question:
Why do you want to fly such an old simulation?
- You are flying a F-16 with the avionics of an "A" model (characteristic is the radar/electro-optical display and the stores control panel) and additionally via seperate addons the F/A-18 Hornet and the MiG-29 Fulcrum.
- Participation in a serious and big training course. Lot's of Red Flag preset and theoretical training missions (Defensive BFM, Head on BMF, Offensive BFM, Lessons from the manual etc.) and you can create and edit your own missions.
- Pete Bonnani's fantastic video lessons called "The Art of the Kill" are included. Learn how a dogfight is done properly, learn maneuvers, learn to manage your energy (altitude for speed, speed for maneuvering), apply all this in the training missions at the Red Flag menue.
- Record your flight's, analyze and evaluate them in the ACMI.
- Relive one of the first (if not THE first) effective padlock features in a simulation.
- Plan or edit missions, add another flight to perform a CAP over your target area or fly as the CAP and let your AI colleagues do the dirty job.
- Pilot's have different skill levels, changing over time in one of many campaigns (Israel, Kuwait, Bosnia etc.)
- Does work with modern peripherals. I tried it with my TM HOTAS Cougar + ECS Rudder and with my TM 16000M. DOSBox needs to be configured properly and the function to be tested. Watch out for the Swap34 = true (or false) and timed = false. Example: It's important to set the joystick = 4axis (for 3D Joysticks).
The truth is, that you could go for Falcon 4.0, install BMS 4.33 and go for the real and modern F-16 simulator, which simulates various "C" models. Or you just want to relive, refly it and just be happy with the big content which this simulation is providing and really spend some time in it.
I tell you, the atmosphere in most older sims are really worth it. You use the assets which were state of the art over 20 years ago. You enter the 90's world, the 90's known war-topics (short after the end of the cold war) at the time (no terrorists, no F-22's or other fancy technologies). If low-res graphics can't shock you, go for it. You will be dragged into the complete 90's world of Falcon 3.0 Gold.
If you liked Falcon (3.0) Gold, try:
Digital Intergration - Tornado & Operation Desert Storm (PA-200 Tornado)
Microprose - Fleet Defender Gold (F-14B Tomcat)
Microprose - Strike Eagle III (F-15E Strike Eagle)
Microprose - Falcon 4.0 + BMS 4.33 Mod by one of the greatest communities (F-16C Fighting Falcon)
If you want to test your knowledge regarding energy management, have no missiles, no doppler radars, guns only:
Rowan's MiG Alley (F-86 Sabre F-80 Shooting Star, F-84 Thunderjet, F-86 Sabre, F-51D Mustang, MiG-15 & bis Fagot)
Remember, older games do work within DOSBox, still it is recommended to aquire some skills in configuring your DOSBox and test various configs. You got lots of options. If your joystick doesn't work as intended, you got some lines to change to get it to work. If you have questions, just ask.
