On paper this game is really good and fun but, its actually pretty bad because you HAVE TO spend money on this game to have fun, you might be wondering why would i say that, well its maybe because the battle of Stalingrad default battle it comes with has a very limited amount of just everything after like 2 weeks of playing the game you will be already bored because you only get such a small about of planes and tanks, but ones you buy all the cool DLC like Normandy, Boneplatte and tank crew the game will be 1000 times better because of just how lacking the default game is it barley has anything so if you are a player who is not looking to spend minimum of at least 70 to 80 dollars (or more WITH sales because without sales that increases to like almost 200 dollars) on this game then its not for you but if you do have the money i would recommend you wait until steam has one if its big sales and snipe some of their DLC and trust me if you do decide to buy (Enough DLC) you will have fun
Great game, visually. Ai a bit mid. If you're going to play it, preferably with some sort of VR headset, as playing just keyboard and mouse (especially when looking around and trying to line up shots) will be very difficult.
After years of playing fly sims this as really put me of,,,, key binds never work correctly, for some reason even free flight needs to be on line, what could of been a great game as just been over complicated so it can say its a flight sim.... Totally get that really flying aint easy to learn but im sure a real plane would be easier than this.
Why cant you DEVS deal with the minor complaints instead of ignoring your customers.
I don't know what to say. I'm just so unhappy with Battle of Stalingrad. So much feels wrong about the sim.
Navigating menus shouldn't be this slow and clunky. It's like the application is waiting to query some DRM server on the other side of the moon, every single time I try to advance a day in a career. How hard is it to query a database and populate a spreadsheet?
Most of the careers are simply unplayable as far as I'm concerned, and I want my money back. I'm not going to spend forty five minutes crossing the English Channel or French countryside as an American, British or late-war German pilot. This was the single worst part of 1946 and I guess I'm just an idiot for thinking that in the better part of 2 decades, somebody would have figured out a more convenient form of time compression. No: they actually reduced it to 2x, and pretend like it goes up to 8x.
The worst thing is the money grubbing. I went into it with my eyes open, knowing the customer base is dominated by well-to-do hobbyist whales, and that modern day people, in general, lack the principle needed to not take advantage of such a market. I could see the store page and I could see how bad it was. What I didn't expect was to buy DLC and load in, just to be lied to in the game menu and told "yeah, you can join this squadron. You own this plane." Only to find out that the squadron doesn't get that plane until August, and unless I want to fly a piece of crap instead (or spend more money), all I can do is sit there and click "next day" for ninety minutes, until the squadron gets issued the plane I actually paid for.
Very often, starting a recording with the built-in tool causes the game to enter an unintentional slow motion state. My rig is well beyond the system requirements, with double the RAM and 100gb available on an SSD for a paging file. This shouldn't be happening.
The AI has gone to plaid. The only plane they can reliably see and interact with is the player's. This leads to absurd trains of AI planes looping round and round in a ragged line, like Soviet drones, too afraid of the commissar to break formation. They seem more likely than ever to collide, and couldn't care less when another bot gets on their six and spends twenty seconds pumping their wings full of bullets. They just keep flying straight and level, pumping machine gun bullets into another plane who is also ignoring them and flying straight and level as their wings get pumped full of bullets. Of course, as soon as the player gets within 300 meters they see you however: it doesn't matter if you're six o'clock low in the sun. They start juking.
The more time I spend in this "sim" the angrier I get. This is outrageous. I've played early access games that were more stable, feature-rich and polished. Sturmovik has been released for over ten years! How is it that the reviews for this are positive? How do people spend hundreds of dollars on a product like this and leave it positive feedback?!
I Can't Believe I Paid Almost $120 For The Tank Crew Deluxe edition Even When It Was On Sale 😭😭😭😭😭😭 i wouldnt pay more than $40 for this, it is very fun at first due to how realistic it is, and the ability to look inside a tank and finally understand how all these work after years of playing games like war thunder but then it eventually gets boring and or repetitive, still find it fun to revisit sometimes tho 7/10
If your potato pc cant play dcs and you're either a wehraboo, then this is the game for you.
Great game. The planes are a joy to fly and once you figure out the controles its pretty easy to pick up how the planes fly.
It's a nice change of pace from DCS, and far better for WW2. I play DCS for when I want my brain to explode, I play this to relax. If you are buying DLC, get it when it goes on sale, also, really think about the flying circus, I enjoy it but the planes are not for everyone, slow and try to kill you.
If you are into WW2 aviation and are not expecting 'Study level' sim, get IL2, you'll love it.
Buy the base game for 40 dollars (I paid 10 cause I caught it on sale). And then get taken for a walk by the devs with a labyrinth of DLC's. Not to mention the "Flying Circus" scheme. You can get Rise Of Flight for FREE (you only get like 3 planes though) and the total value for the whole ROF game is around 70 or 80 dollars, whereas Flying Circus is priced at around 300 dollars with all the current DLC's. My point is that the game itself is fine, it's just not worth the hoops you have to jump through to pay hundreds of dollars for basic amenities, it's a scam.
logitech pedal combine with joystick gremlin not working in this game
DCS does realism by simulating every aspect of a plane as close as possible to the real thing. IL2 does realism by making you fly around, hour after hour, mission after mission, with not a single enemy plane in the sky. It blows my mind that this is what they thought would be fun when making a combat flight sim. If I wanted to be bored out of my mind flying waypoints I would just get MSFS. At least I got to shoot up that cloud that one time.
This is a SIMULATOR and apparently you can go as deep as you want. I'm told you can also make it easier with settings but I'm still trying to figure that out.
Also - while it will support your controller you have to assign everything where you want it. Your controller does not work out of the box. I didn't realize that. Not sure why they don't include a controller profile out of the box.
It seems amazing to me just be prepared for a serious simulator. I've got so much to learn.
IL-2 is a game of astounding detail along with realism set during the years of WWI-WWII Depending on what you buy if you so choose. It is a game for all players who wish to feel what it was like being a pilot in those days and experiencing the same combat scenarios as the pilots faced back in the day. Let it be known first and foremost that you will need a flight stick, this is paramount I simply used a inexpensive logitech stick purchased from Walmart and fair warning you may have to set up controls on your flight stick. I am not sure, I had to a little bit though so without further adieu: Let's get started with my honest review.
This game can be very overwhelming at first but also a game that will give you arcade like options so you are not overwhelmed. But most likely you will be overwhelmed, especially if you are not used to sims. But please don't let that hurt you. Although this is true you just need to try it along with using options given to you by the game to help you along the ride, it takes practice. I won't lie, but I think once you start getting a feel for it, you will truly appreciate it for what it is and see how hard they really made a game into what it is.
The options they give you to help ease your worries are options like unlimited ammo, automatic radiator engine cools for fuel mixtures (Yeah I definitely have to have this checked marked I have no idea what I am doing.) A aiming assist, throttle assist, invulnerability you know you want to fly in a swarm of foes and smile as they can't touch you, rudder assist, unbreakable, autopilot (This is just a on/off option that allows you to let the AI take over for you in case you want to do something else or so), and many more to help you feel more at ease.
You have game modes like career's, campaign's, quick play, multiplayer, and possibly another that I can't think of. I will go into a little bit of this in depth since I firstly want to stress something for you the player to read and understand before getting yourself into this.
Yes this game has several DLC, yes they can be pretty gosh darn pricey and I understand that I really do. I myself am one to not buy stuff unless its real cheap. But you have to understand what it is you the player wants from this game, you have to read the details of each and really ask yourself what it is you want to do. Do you want to play in WWI era? Do you want to play a specific faction like The Soviet Union during set timelines along WWII? Do you want to fly US planes? Once you figure that out a lot of options open up to you. I myself have purchased Flying Circus Vol 1-2, Battle of Kuban deluxe, Battle of Stalingrad deluxe, Late war bundle.
Now for the game modes and what each gives you.
Career, this is basically what it sounds like. You pick to play as a faction for whatever Battle of___/Flying circus you may own and you are a fictional character with a fun biography to read about their past and play whatever country you wish to play for. Be it Soviet union, USA, Britain, or Germany and maybe another Country that I can't think of at the moment, possibly France. Depending on again, what you own.
* You can set options to realistically play a slow day by day process, change how many ground targets, enemy pilots are in the game maps, where you start be it on the ground or flying in the skies.
* You can join real life squadrons at the time which have been historically accurate with each squadron/group having a specific plane/planes so if you want to play a bomber role look for planes that have a bomb icon. Tired of playing the bomber only role? No worries you can easily transfer to another unit and be a fighter pilot after your mission.
* The modes so far that I have experienced have been relocating to a new airfield, bomber escort, free hunt, bomber hunt, destroy enemy balloon survey's (WWI), patrol. Mostly I have played WWI flying circus vol. 1-2 so far so I can't fully speak for WWII just yet.
Campaigns.
If you want campaigns and I mean a lot of campaigns, try look at the Battle of Kuban deluxe bundle. You get many campaigns from that purchase. I think Flying circus vol 1 gave me 2-3 campaigns maybe 4 but don't quote me on that as it may have been from Volume II.
*These you get to read a novel like story of situations and do things like dogfighting, bombing, whatever. You hear a lot of radio chatter (except for WWI that doesn't exist for the most part just yet.) and enjoy these little scenario's. My only complaint about these so far (And really I only played a little bit of a flying circus campaign (cant think of the name) and The Sea dragons campaign.) Is the fact that I cannot change loadouts with what I want or add options like enemy superiority so I have a lot of fun and a lil bit of chaos. I guess that's what career mode is for. They are enjoyable.
Quick play
Basically these give a lot of scenarios you can choose to pick out from and play as whatever nations you may have along with said planes and enjoy whatever you wish to do. Want to relax yourself for a fair while and just fly in the skies while on your way to bomb something to kingdom come? Go for it. Want to be in a dogfight? Be my guest. I'll be honest in saying I haven't looked at these too much just yet. But just know the options are open to you.
Multiplayer
No comment, I don't play PvP. Sorry guys!
Modding
There is no workshop unfortunately, or a box to look at all the amazing mods players have made for this game. But just know its out there. This of course cancels your wishes to join multiplayer so please be aware of that. I can't speak for all the mods out there as I have not looked at them in depth. Just know its open for you to use and enjoy.
Level editor
I know this game has it. Not sure how to access it. Maybe from the library? I don't know. Haven't looked into this, but again just know the option is open to you. Here's hoping that its easy...
Options
There are many options to set for the game. I am used to the Imperial measurement system so I have to set mine to that. My complaint on this however is if you were to do a campaign or career mode they still want to use the metric system in details of the mission instead of switching to the imperial system when you have this toggled on. There's basic mini map settings (not sure why I have to keep setting the option for my mini map to be large, I wish I didn't. But ignore me, just press M while playing that changes the size/removes it too. Its nice to have a FPS limit setting. I don't need to be crazy so I just set this at 60.
Final things to know.
*There is a speed up option. You have x2. x4, x8 speeds. Not sure if anyone really can do x8. But hey, it's out there. Even if you set your game speed to it it may still feel like for example......speed x2 speed. This is to keep your gaming running optimal and not make your PC go bonkers I guess. I could be wrong on this. But I think when I set my FPS limit to 60 this caused my speed to not go past a X2 speed. So if you want to go faster, maybe go unlimited. I have to do further testing on this. But that's just what it feels like. I only use this option when I have to fly long distances/set my pilot to auto pilot and have the AI takeover for me during say bomber escort missions since those can be long.
*When you are trying to figure out what to buy. My advice is to do a little video research on said career's, battle of's, flying circus. Whatever just so you can see what timelines are opened up to you along with said planes and said nations available to you in whatever. I'm not asking you to watch them actually play, just look at what you can do.
Here is a little example. Flying Circus Vol 1-2 takes place during late WWI time period. So for example you will not have access to say 1916 planes. But I can do some in 1917, not much but some. Mostly I can do 1918. So be aware of that. You will see what I mean when you start a career.
I hope you find this review helpful.
honestly i havent run into a single problem. great game
I had high hopes ... spent way too much time just trying to get it to start ... If a game makes you curse naughty words on Christmas ... BEFORE you even play it ... refund it ... I DID.
the best WW2 combat flying simulator to this date.
Tons of planes available
If your not living in EU or NA, you cannot play the official dogfight server, the ping limit always drive me out of the server. I can understand why they limit the ping value, but it make me unable to play the game.
IL-2: Great Battles is a fantastic WWII combat flight simulator that combines stunning visuals with an impressive range of customization for difficulty. Whether you're a seasoned pilot looking for a hardcore experience or a newcomer easing into flight sims, the game caters to all skill levels, making it highly accessible without compromising on realism.
The game's extensive library of modules adds meaningful content and variety to the experience. However, it's best to wait for a major sale, as the full suite of expansions can be pricey. I would also add that the Tank Crew module lacks the polish of the core aviation content.
Overall, IL-2: Great Battles delivers an outstanding experience for WWII enthusiasts, with its gorgeous graphics, flexible gameplay, and wealth of content. Despite a few shortcomings, it’s a strong recommendation for anyone with an interest in aviation or historical combat sims.
I fly only single player and with basic controls, meaning a joystick and trackir. I've loved every moment.
I attempted to play the game with mouse and keyboard, It is simply to difficult to understand how to control the aircraft until I can get a Joystick, too many options to bind for me to have the time to be bothered with it.
The game also doesn't work in full screen, the keybinds mess with my desktop files and opens things randomly while I press keys.
it fun game but ohh boyyyy, if u change the graphc setting it always ask to restart the app, it annoying...... because loading time is slowwwww......
Bridges the gap between digital cockpit simulator and arcade flight sims. The player base is a bit low from when I started playing...not sure if it's due to the politics of the devs or what not, but you basically have this or DCS. FWIW, I do own some WW2 modules in DCS but I've been a bit lazy in learning them. I do find the it easier to pop in and play since the planes are not full-fidelity, that said, there are dudes who've been playing this game for 5 years and will whoop on you.
An in between War Thunder's Simulator battles and DCS when it comes to level of realism.
It also has a more welcoming and easier ways to play single player and coop with the use of tools like PWCG, so if you're into multiplayer and single player, I would go with IL-2 for ww2 content in comparison to games like WT and DCS.
I also enjoy not having to buy so many things to be able to play, you can also fly full realism with only a mouse and keyboard, even in joystick only servers (select joystick instead of mouse, bind roll and pitch to your mouse and ta da), so inviting people that dont have a fligthstick is as easy as in War Thunder.
Big disclaimer though: The game usually has only 2 full servers in peak hours, but tbh is worth it if you have the experience to play online. I still would suggest to play a lot of single player before going to multiplayer.
CONFIGURE CONTROLS A HEADACHE.
Look, if you think that you can instantly play the game, mmm nop, it´s a mess, let me explain why.
I can understand that you like an inmerse experience but I always spent +- 1 hour refreshing the controls to play.
No easy path, for example, if you like play tanks with the mouse you just need configure sensitivity and movements, etc, but why dont give to the user some easy way?, no, instead let´s make it a hell to configure, and you see that direct control turret says WASD and it doesn´t work, why?, ok, let´s configure an Xbox controller, and a big kick on your %&&/%, the triggers doesn´t work in the conf, after a hard battle to configure the turret, you almost done, nope, the POV of the crew is attached to the mouse, you try to configure and it doesn´t work.
If you are in the gun position you can spent more time figuring that exist a command to Nestle to the gunsight, bro, why?, why don´t put a label advasing about what you can do in the current position?, Jesus, almost all games give some reticule giving options, if you press V you can aim, if you press C you can change of position, etc.
And I have more, the first time I configure the VR, misscalculate the position of the center in the airplane and no way to center again.
And to finish this I was configuring a microsoft joystick and all buttons have their code, so, I bring some notebook to trace my keybiddings, and I stop playing the game maybe 2 months, after that, with my notebook lost I decided to better play with the default keys.
I spent in total maybe 6 hours configuring my controls.
I'm done.
I set up my joystick and throttle. Cant fly a single plane for shit. Requires a master degree in IL-2 Sturmovik: Battle of Stalingrad to even consider begin playing it.
Best WW2 flight sim in my opinion. Good single player career and multiplayer isn't entirely dead. Do be prepared to spend a lot of money if you want any more planes.
First and foremost Il-2 Great battles is simply great fun. Il-2 looks pricey if you look at all the modules in DLC but realistically before buying ask yourself will really fly the plane when there already are planes which you can fly for each battle so there is no need to rush it and buy everything at once. I have all the modules that are currently available but I still tend to fly mostly those included with the maps.
Flight sims can be pricey hobby but you get beautiful aircrafts and can fly them large authentic maps as per the fun aspect Il-2 is not hardcore sim like DCS (thank god and devs) so do not expect long startup procedures which need to be done to the letter according to plane manual. The flight model is accurate the need to memorize some key binds or preferably bind these on HOTAS is certainly preferable. The Il-2 is little bit more forgiving in terms of engine damage and failures due to mishandling while it still offers reasonably accessible WW2 aerial combat.
The combat is intensive and engaging once you get to combat area and unforgiving especially in multiplayer. But this only adds to fun aspect of the game. You mostly fly air crafts made from really thin metal and some times wood strapped with high caliber machine guns so if these got hit they go down in flames. Which looks great btw.
The graphics are pretty good not sure from where all those complains about performance came from it really works fine for me and runs smoothly in 4k resolution with frame rate above 100 FPS though I get similar frame rate from DCS so yep my machine is a beast built with intention to run hw intensive simulations.
So for someone who likes to chill and relax I can definitely recommend this game and yes I have all current modules. As for those looking to begin with Il-2 it is not a bad choice the learning curve is a bit steeper than in arcades but it is rewarding plus you can set your realism options to be more forgiving, you can start missions from air or runway if you just want to bomb or shoot down something. So yes Il-2 is accessible even to complete beginners. If you have gaming rig, and you just want to try it out. You can go for one or few of great battles either Moscow, Stalingrad, Normandy, Kuban or Bodenplatte which was what I did few years ago.
If you made it this far a bit of warning I guess is also in order simulations and flight sims ARE addictive! I have to confess that I have DCS and all of its modules and the Il-2 great battles and all of its modules I even got Prep3D and Steel beasts FFS and the list goes on.
If you are prone to either gaming addiction or flight sim addiction consult your wife! To be fair it will not help you after all you are already hooked up If you made it this far in review :)
it is nice to play but it could get some upgrages
IL-2 BOS is my first and only flight sim experience - I've been playing with a cheap HOTAS joystick/thrust combo, and I own BOS, BOK, BON, and BOB. Let's look at the game!
PROS
+Fun, easy-to-learn gameplay (Learn how with youtube channel "The Air Combat Tutorial Library)
+Excellent map (my second-favourite after Kuban)
+Diverse cast of planes (my favourite in the series - yes, even more than BoN and BoB!)
+Beautifully-rendered planes with lots of upgrades
+Great, realistic shooting, damage, and flying (well, by my standards as a flight sim noob)
CONS
-Weak campaign - I supplement it with Pat Wilson's 3rd party generator, and I strongly, STRONGLY, recommend you do, too. It gives meaning to your gameplay and makes you feel like you're in WWII, rather than Microsoft Flight Sim with shooting. Take the time to learn how to use Pat Wilson, because it's the difference between this game being worth playing and not. The fact that IL2 doesn't come with something like it stock is very disappointing. I exclusively play with Pat Wilson, whether it's offline or online.
-Bad menus.
-Little to no documentation. The game IS easy to learn, but they're not going to teach you.
IN THE MIDDLE
-Passable AI... in an old game. Yeah, this one is kind of on the fence for me... but the devs have had years and years to improve the AI. They do here and there, but it's not great.
-Decent terrain - the game has gorgeous sunsets, beautiful clouds, and fairly nice water, but the landscape isn't always great. You can crank up the textures, yes, but you might need mods to get it to a more current standard. It's definitely showing its age visually.
OVERALL
I strongly recommend this game if you're looking for a WWII flight sim. I play it coop almost exclusively, using Pat Wilson's Campaign Generator, and I get huge bang for my buck. The AI isn't great. Some of the graphics show their age. This is still a wonderful, wonderful experience... you'll just need to do some work on your end to get it up to spec. The game goes on sale along with most modern Steam sales - get it then.
simply the best most unforgiving flight sim, i fly too hard and break my planes
I love this game let me state that, and i find it far better than what DCS offers in regards to WW2, but the one thing that makes me almost instantly close the game is as follows (been happening really only the last year and a half, and to my brother on his PC as well)
1: Start the game and wait for game to load
2: Get a pop up message at main menu
3: "New device detected, would you like to transfer key bind profiles to this new device?" (IVE USED THE SAME HOTAS AND THROTTLE FOR THE LAST 4 YEARS BTW)
4: i click "yes"
5: * every keybind resets to default (amazing)
6: close game and RE-DO step one
7: Get to step 3, this time i click "No"
8: *Every keybind resets to default (beautiful)
"bro just copy your keybind file and save a back up and just transfer it to game directory before you start the game".....Well when you do that, you still end up back at step 3...Insanity. 9/10 times its an instant alt F4 for me.
Wasn't this way 2-3 years ago never had a problem. last 1-1 1/2 years both me and my brother have separately had this issue. Fix it and ill change my review because i do love this game as i strictly play in VR.
Bought it years ago. Real simulator WW2 game if that's your thing. Game crashes and has difficulties starting up anything over 1080p. Seems the more they add to the game, your wallet and gpu are incapable of running it. I have a 3080....
It's sexy and has great QOL features for noobs (hints, universal HUD), but for the price you get a lot more out of Cliffs of Dover. Do not buy anything thing for this game if it isn't on sale.
For this game, currently at fifty dollars:
You don't get a campaign without buying DLC.
You get like, eight Soviet (ew) and German planes, mostly single-engine without buying DLC. (Cliffs of Dover gives you fourteen: Hurricane, Spitfire, Blenheim, Beaufighter, Gladiator, Defiant, Wellington, Bf-109, Bf-110, Stuka, He-111, Fiat G-50, Fiat CR.42, Fiat BR.20M).
And then to add to it, some of the DLC redundantly provide planes that other DLC provide as well. So between two DLC providing six planes each, the second DLC might only really net you one new plane.
If you're a guy who pretty much only plays flight sims, it's probably nbd. But if you like playing a lot of other typical games, and maybe you just bought a joystick and wanna play around, I think Cliffs of Dover will get you a lot more mileage and scratch the same itch. Provided you can suffer through the menus.
It's also way easier to play around with one-off single player missions in Cliffs of Dover. You can get a lot more planes in the air, change them to whatever you want, pick what group of planes you want to play in. Stalingrad is a lot less flexible.
The game itself should be fine, if you are a veteran already. If you're a new player, you need to find tutorials from 3rd parties, since the game gives you none.
However, setting up a server and playing in co-op is ridiculously difficult and requires jumping through multiple hoops and even then we were unable to connect and we were unable to play. If you play singleplayer, this game can be fun I guess, but if you plan to play co-op with a friend, don't bother.
With the lack of freedom and variety offered by the older title, I find I quickly tire of the pretty graphics and go back to the expansive sandbox that is IL2 1946.
It's a huge investment to get to try and fly other aircraft than the handful that is offered, and I have not found the will nor need to invest.
Is good for modern version of il2 1946, though i'd recommend il2 1946 since it has vast amount of mods compared to the detailed greate battles. Great for those who are awe for graphics, but for gameplay wise il2 1946 has more of a great sandbox experience than Il2 sturmovik. You need to get an additional account to play this game and it is one of the downside of this game of Great battles. Anything other than that it works superb.
FLYING CIRCUS DLC
Q: How might a company maximize revenue from its dedicated customer base for a single game?
A: One approach could involve dividing the game into four separate parts and pricing each at £66, resulting in a total cost approaching £300, not including the cost of the base game!
Q: How could a company encourage customers to purchase all four parts of the game?
A: By strategically withholding key features from earlier installments, such as excluding Career Mode from the first part, compelling players to buy the second part. Furthermore, after spending over £120 on the first two parts, players may find that essential career content, like specific planes required for progression, is locked behind additional purchases. For instance, such planes could be included only in the fourth installment, priced at £55. The game might allow players to begin the career, only to present a prominent alert mid-play indicating that required assets are inaccessible without purchasing the final installment.
This business strategy, while potentially profitable, may be perceived as predatory and could alienate the customer base. Players seeking a more transparent and value-driven experience might consider avoiding this approach altogether.
AVOID AT ALL COSTS
While I like the game, trying to get multiplayer going with remote friends who are not computer savvy is next to impossible. Many of us do not like to play with people that we do not know. This has unfortunately GREATLY limited how much I am going to play, and definitely how much I am going to pay - this is a money sucker for sure. $80 for DLC? really? You guys think you are golden. Going to have to give it a thumbs down.
Having to make an account with a service outside steam to play is a huge downside for me.
Lacks the intuitive gameplay of 1946, and GREATLY lacks in terms of planes available with purchase of the game. Sad to see such a great simulation engine be so misused.
It is very fun, 100% recommend. You have to buy planes, but other than that, it is phenomenal. Amazing game and is worth the money. I run it on a laptop and it runs perfectly, with a little sacrifice of graphics.
With over 5500 hours of flying time on this thing it’s probably only fair to write a review!
TLDR: This is probably the best World War 2 flight simulator on the market at the moment. It has its downsides but overall, I would recommend this. It also has modules for World War 1 and even includes a built-in tank simulator! If you are in no rush, then add the game to your wish list and pick it up in the a sale - several times a year you can get each main map/plane set for 75-90% off!
This game sits somewhere between DCS and War Thunder in complexity but at the fraction of the price of either. Each 'Battle of...' in the series gets you a detailed map and between 8-12 aircraft to fly (depending on if you opt for the premium version).
The flight model in this game is a mix of play-ability vs reality but the variation between the different aircraft is not huge. Pro players will definitely be able to get the best out of their favourite planes, but casual players won't notice too much difference ie all the fighters feel like nimble fighters, all the bombers like heavy planes. The external models are nicely done, and the sound is good. Fog, snow, rain and day & night missions are all possible.
Each 'Battle of...' also comes with a handful of single player missions, a quick action mode and a quick mission builder option. For those who like to make their brains hurt there is also in-depth mission creation tools (but these are way more complicated to use than the DCS mission editor). The ‘Battles of…’ also include huge single player campaigns where you can join a squadron at the beginning of the war and over time fight your way to 1945. The AI generated missions in these campaigns are constantly being improved and updated.
If you are looking for something different you can try one of the World War 1 modules and zip around the skies in a biplane. If you are old enough to remember the Rise of Flight sim then you'll be right at home here as many of the models and dynamics from that game were upgraded and ported into this engine. The WW1 community is really small but are some of the nicest people you will meet online!
The game also has a tank simulator. It’s quite detailed and there are a choice of about 20 different vehicles to buy. The game comes with 2 free tanks, and these have a set of single player missions to try out. Beware though, online play for vehicles is very, very limited as virtually no servers include ground vehicle slots. If you do find a server though its great fun to jump in to a Flak Wagon and try and shoot down other players!
You have the option to buy collectors planes. Unlike most games these are definitely not 'pay to win'. Instead, they just tend to add something different to try rather than something OP. If you are after something fun to fly, then the Po2/U2V as flown by the Night Witches or the Hs129 tank buster are definitely something 'different'!
Online game play brings the main game to life but there are, literally, only about 5 'main' servers these days and each has a capacity of up to 84 players at a time. Each of the main servers is slightly different. For example, Berloga is aimed at quick dogfights, Wings of Liberty is a great place for new players to start as it has map markers to help you find your way around and short missions. TAW and Combat Box are for more advanced players who are happy navigating without markers. These last two servers frequently run campaigns that can last weeks, with players battling to slowly push the front lines towards victory. The online community is generally friendly, and it isn't too hard to find someone to help if you have any questions.
This leads us on to the 'bad'. The game really throws you in the deep end. There are no built-in tutorials, and you may have to watch a few videos on youtube to get started. The cockpits are not clickable (all the buttons move automatically but you can’t interact with them). Setting up VR can be a real pain in the butt. TrackIR works really well but if you haven't got VR/TrackIR and a half decent joystick you are going to get shot down a lot. There are a lot of potential buttons to bind and very few tips on hat you actually need to worry about. The mission editor is too complex, and this means that there are only a few people who create missions.
The game itself is also near the end of the development cycle, but it is over 10 years old now! New planes and modules are spreading further apart (but, as of Nov 24, we are expecting two exciting new major maps/modules in the coming months).
Much of the original development team has moved over to the Korea game that will hopefully be released in a few years. That said what we do have in the IL2 Great Battles series is huge in variety of aircraft and scope of the maps. If you wait for a sale, you can have thousands of hours of fun for very little cost. With over 5500 hours of game play so far, the game has given me great value for money.
Great sim and works great in vr on mid end pc
Ok, so it's not DCS. Truthfully, I use this because I don't want something as complex as DCS. So what I will say, this is very well done. The developers have put out something that is absolutely not arcade-y but definitely qualifies as a real simulator, but made to be more approachable if you set it to be so. That's what I love about this. WW1 and WW2 air battles, there are some tank battles, and it's all done in such a way that you can have all the help from the computer that you could want or, have it be as close to real as possible without being... DCS. I keep mentioning DCS and it's not that I am talking bad about it, it's just that DCS strives to be REAL. Real flight models, real behavior on weapons... It's a die hard true study sim and it deserves that title, the same as X-Plane is a study sim for... just flying and having fun (not much combat in X-Plane). This game while I would not call it a study sim is VERY close. The flight models are very close to real and so are the weapons behavior. Even the AI is pretty well done. The customization of the aircraft and whatnot is also what makes this amazing. So in the end I give this simulator (because it is one) 5/5 on all fronts. Keep in mind, what I classify this as is a simulator made to be approachable. Dig through settings (especially the "Realism" settings) if you're looking for it to be more of a game. But even set with all the help off... It's not quite a study sim but I can call it very real and very well done. I own all DLCs and it was totally worth it as well. Also if you put all the assists on, you will still feel how "difficult" it is to fly and if you're more on the casual side, will really appreciate the help the sim can give. If you're loving old time air combat, with a touch of ground battles... Definitely give this a shot. I've not had this much fun since the old days with Jane's WW2 Fighters.
Cool game, wish addons were cheaper but they’re amazing quality
I understand there will be a bit of pain when setting up the controls of a sim, but good lord I don't think I've ever experienced something this atrocious. It's also impossible to setup button combos without Joy2Key
I would highly suggest buying this game if you are into historical combat aviation. I also play DCS and while DCS is a more detailed plane simulator IL2 is the superior war simulator. Also adding the PWCG (which is a fantastic dynamic campaign simulator) makes it the most immersive WW2 and even WW1 flight sim I have ever played. With all the content and if your like me and have to buy all of it. I would wait for a sale and also look at their website. All in all I would highly recommend if any of this sounds fun to you! Happy flying,
I just love this game and you can play it endlessly! The WW2 genre has always been my favorite and especialy the ones with campaign / career modes, put in the awards, medals and promotions and I'm hooked for life. This game has it all and truly meets up. But there are some things I'm missing or would like to see added.
For starters;
1. A bit more variety in ground targets especialy for the bombing runs.
2. Sea / Naval targets, don't see them in careermode, definitly need more of them.
3. A nice debrief with some aerial recon photo's being presented after the (bombing) mission, which will show you the damage inflicted on the target.
4. Oh, and whats up with some of the armanent being locked in career mode?
Other than that I would recommend this game to anyone who; A. just loves flying (and some violence during flight) or B. just likes the WW2 genre. Like them both and you'll be hooked up also.
Thumbs up for the developers
IL-2 Sturmovik: Battle of Stalingrad – A Thrilling, Immersive Flight Experience for True Aviation Enthusiasts! ✈️🔥
If you're looking for a true test of your piloting skills, IL-2 Sturmovik: Battle of Stalingrad will make you feel like you’re in the cockpit of a WWII fighter, battling it out over the skies of one of history’s most intense conflicts. This game is not just a flight simulator—it’s a masterclass in realistic air combat. From the detailed cockpits to the complex flight dynamics, every moment in the sky feels authentic and intense.
The Battle of Stalingrad campaign is an absolute highlight, offering a deep dive into the historical air battles of WWII. Whether you're playing as a German or Soviet pilot, the missions are gripping, the enemy AI challenging, and the atmosphere is so immersive you’ll feel like you’ve been transported back in time. The attention to detail is mind-blowing, from the aircraft’s handling to the way the weather affects your flight. There’s nothing like diving through clouds and dodging flak fire as you engage in dogfights with enemy aircraft.
The graphics are stunning, too. The environments look gorgeous, with accurate renditions of the Russian landscapes and the chaos of Stalingrad itself. Combine that with realistic damage modeling—where every bullet counts—and you’ve got a combat flight experience that’s as close to the real thing as it gets without actually leaving the ground.
Multiplayer adds another layer of fun, where you can test your flying skills against others in competitive dogfights or cooperative missions. In short, if you’re into flight sims or just want an adrenaline-pumping, realistic combat experience, IL-2 Sturmovik: Battle of Stalingrad is an absolute must-play. It’s a beautiful, challenging, and incredibly rewarding game that will make you feel like a true aerial warrior. ✈️💥

Most of the bad reviews here are honestly just weird. Weird ass complaints. War Thunder is not a more detailed simulation, that is a crazy thing to say. The only game with full fidelity cockpits is DCS. Il-2 Cliffs of Dover has higher fidelity cockpits but it is old and has a whole host of other problems. This is the best WW2 sim on the market, bar none. This has the best VR support of any sim on the market, bar none. It also runs way better than DCS or war thunder in VR. Its the only sim I play regularly that doesn't cause constant head aches. Buy it on sale, or pay full price, its worth it either way.
The devs literally banned me for stating a fact. This game is a scam. can be over $100 for DLCs that are broken and haven't been fixed properly for well over a year. The Ai is trash, the maps are trash and copy pasted BS, This game is very bias its hilarious, The only thing going for it is that it is...not much really, waste of time and money, and the only reason im now leaving this is after they had banned me for simply saying its most likely going to be another $100 scam. which it is. Do Better 1C Game Studios, An incredibly PATHETIC way of dealing with the situation.
