Such a great and fun concept with a cute presentation, completely ruined by something trivial: A memory leak issue makes this unplayable for me after the game is open for 10 minutes. Many others have complained about this same issue and in over 8 years the devs have not done any work towards fixing it. Bad work.
The store page advertises a level editor, but clicking the editor in-game opens your Internet browser to a page that does not exist. And there's an achievement for creating a level, on top of that!
At the time of this review, I'm nearly done with world 2, and I got the deathless world 1 achievement, so because I paid for it and left it in my library past the refund period before starting I'll probably begrudgingly trudge through the rest of the game eventually.
If the memory leak issue was fixed I'd easily give this a thumbs up (which is not impossible; the developer is active on Steam playing other games, but has seemingly abandoned this), but because of how borderline unplayable it is I don't think this is worth anyone's time or money. Do not buy this.
Score: 85/100
An amazing concept that's extraordinarily well-executed. Points are lost here for random odd crashes (which seem to be a memory issue after multiple deaths; it's hard to tell), an overly frustrating final level that's nevertheless satisfying to beat, and a broken level editor, which would have been super sweet if the devs still supported it. Hopefully someday they'll come back and bring it online again.
I had a blast paying this game. At the same time it caused me so much undue stress. This game was HARD! But at the same time I found it super rewarding to play. The music is 10/10, The graphics are cute, and the puzzles are fantastic. Great game, I hope there's a sequel some day. 8.5/10
There are some good levels alongside an interesting concept, but this game is also prone to random freezes. In addition, some of the later levels are too long to justify the lack of checkpoints and then there's the final level which is literally hot garbage. There are better games out there.
It's not bad, and decently fun at least until the second half of world 4.
The stages where everything is on one screen are fun, even when you die over and over. The stages that are spread out on several screens that you access by going through doors are... less fun. They get very convoluted and the whole puzzle is about figuring out which key to pick up and which door to go through in which order. Pick up the wrong key or hit the wrong switch and you start over. And over. And over until you figure out the sequence it wants.
Or, there is a tricky, time-consuming puzzle on screen 1, then you go through a door and there is another tricky, time-consuming puzzle, then a third. Die on any screen and start the whole stage over.
I finally lost patience on stage 4-10. Only 5 stages left to go and I doubt I will ever finish it. It just quit being fun for me.
Up until then, it was fun and worth the $5. I got close to my benchmark $1 per hour of fun out of it, so it's a recommend.
An overly-challenging platforming game that leaves you guessing at what your course of action should be, and if you guess wrong, you have to start the entire level over again every time.
"Guess wrong and die" combined with "Die and start over" is a surefire way to sap the fun from any game.
Although it has pixel graphics the game seems to lag very often. Then the controls therefore don't take my jump input or direction input. This alone makes it for me not recommended.
It's a nice cute little puzzle platformer to kill some time. With neat and responsive controls I would have given it a thumbs up.
Very fun, simple, and challenging puzzle platformer that solidly utilizes a couple of interesting mechanics - antigravity (in the same vein as VVVVVV), and "recursion" i.e. screen-looping (exiting the screen either vertically or horizontally takes you back to the other end of it).
It's a shame that gems like this often get lost in the recent explosion of Steam games. I've played this game for longer than many other big-name and well-regarded games in my library. Still, if you made it to this page and are reading this review in spite of that, just buy the game! It's as fun as it looks.
Amazing game. If you like difficult puzzle platformers you should like it! It starts pretty easy but by the third chapter it gets really hard.
The level design is really good and it's really fun to try to get all the stars as well as the "finish a chapter without dying" achievements.
Some levels are really difficult and you might rage quit once in a while, ahah, but so far (I'm currently at the end of the third chapter) none of the levels feel difficult because of chance, meaning that if you don't make a mistake you won't die, unlike some other games where you can get unlocky and have something appear at the wrong place at the wrong time. In Recursion Deluxe everytime you restart a level every platforms and monsters go back to their original position, which removes the luck factor from the difficulty and makes it great for speed runners.
I really enjoy this game. Even though it can be maddening at times.
Lovely game that really brought back to me the fun of playing a great 2d platofrmer in the 90s. I have often found it hard to really get into a game in recent years but with Recursion Deluxe time just slipped by as I needed 'One more go!' to beat a level!
The levels are all interesting, unique and short enough that it never feels like a chore to re-play it over and over until you get it right. It was a good length game for the price but now I am thirsty for more levels!! Would definetely pay for an expansion pack.
Overall: Highly reccomended puzzle platformer that feels good to play and has a fun wrap around screen mechanic!
I keep telling myself you can't win just give up, but I try one more time.
Wish we had some defense like stepping on a button and smoke the bee's for a second LOL and of course jump on them .
I'm on the 4th level and have to say I decided to screw the stars get the flag and then go back later for stars, or I'd be on the same level forever.
Thanks for making it.
amazing little retro platformer, really enjoyed the later levels, clever! hoping dlc will come in future updates :D
A very nice precision platformer game. A nice difficulty cure, although the last level is very, very tough. But at no point did I feel like the difficult was unfair. The jumps can be tough, but always are fair.
This game is simply a treat to play. Game mechanics that WORK. Plenty of puzzles and difficulty that is just enough to be fun, and not annoying. 5/5 will definitely be replaying this one.
A charming puzzle platformer with an emphasis on puzzles, timing and precision.
There's nothing particularly new at work here, though most of the levels are well crafted and unique feeling. The main gimmicks are the non-euclidean geometry and gravity reversal, with plenty of switches, keys and obstacles to make for interesting puzzle solving and platform jumping. It definitely feels like a game I've played before, and yet it kept my attention from beginning to end.
The game is quite short, but for the price seems about right. The difficulty curve is slow and steady, with most of the game feeling a bit on the easy side, though I do consider myself well-traveled in this genre. Most of the challenge comes from collecting the game's completely optional stars, and dying has no penalty.
Recommended to puzzle fans, platforming fans, and retro game fans alike.
I mastered playing platformers over twenty-five years ago, and until today I never realized there was a feature I never knew I was missing: the discipline button. For terminating your incompetent character following a particularly egregious series of failures.
I made like Nicholas Cage in this game... "NOT THE BEES!!!"
very charming and old school kind of feels. reminds me of many great little freeware indie games i would find online around 2007-2010... before everything changed... might not be everyones cup of tea but if you love that old indie scene then buy the fuck now or shutup 4eva
Reclusion Deluxe is definitely worth picking up, its simple and easy to get in with but super addicting and will leave you blasting through its levels and killing more time than you expected, a really cool retro style platformer with amazing graphics and the kind of sound track that fills you with nostaliga, for a first look of the game check out the link below!
