This is a flawed game so while I recommend it, let me first go through the list of negatives:
- After the tutorial, guessing will come up here and there. The levels are randomly generated so if you get a particularly bad one you can just reload the level, but you will have to take chances occasionally. Though to make it less harsh, you are given several lives before the level is failed.
- The camera is unwieldy. Rotation works fine but panning (moving the camera's focus) requires you to either double-click the block you want to focus on or moving it around with WASD+QE for the six possible directions. It's not as bad as other comments made it out to be but it makes it rather cumbersome on larger levels. It seems this problem stems from the developer's ambition to support as many control options as possible, with all mouse buttons already serving other purposes.
- Being 3D, you don't get to see all fields from the start, especially on the denser levels. This becomes a challange when you have to remove "clue blocks" to see/mark what's behind them but not too many or you'll forget their clues and end up having to guess.
- Not a complaint of me personally but this is not the classic Minesweeper mode where you flag the mines and leave them. You actively clear them out so you end up with an empty field. I don't mind this variant and it sure helps with the visibility problem mentioned above but some people have strong feelings about that.
So with all this, why do I still recommend this game?
- It is one of the few proper 3D Minesweeper games. Most of those I've seen advertized as 3D are simply planes wrapped around spheres, cubes and other shapes. They're fun but not really 3D. This on has depth! Bumping the nunber of neighbors from 8 to 26 means you will have to think a lot harder (and from more angles) to solve the level. If there were as many of these types of Minesweeper games as there are 2D ones, the cons mentioned above would make this a hard pass but since it's very slim pickings, beggars can't be choosers.
- The levels are randomly generated! Of course on one hand that means that they are not curated and checked for quality, on the other hand it means a lot of (potential) replayability from what at first seems like a small game.
- For the price asked, you do get your money's worth as long as you can look past the shortcomings and treat is as a rather casual puzzler. It even goes on sale for -50% off but seriously, they're asking pocket change.
[*]It seems that the game is very open to modding. That exceeds my skills but if you can code and have a vision on how precisely the game could be improved - well apparently you can do so yourself comparatively easily.
In short: Despite it's flaws and somewhat bare-bones design, I do recommend it to fans of Minesweeper games to experience it in true 3D - especially considering the price and the lack of alternatives.
The game at times puts you into positions where you have to guess to progress.
There is no free cam, instead the camera is centred around a single block. This is not ideal, but by far not "Do Not Recommend, Refund" levels of unplayable. You get used to it.
And that's it for bad stuff, in my opinion. It's a very nice variation on Minesweeper, and the graphics are clean and clear. I really enjoy this game as a way to keep busy whilst watching something. The 'moving mines' mode is my favourite. I'd still recommend it if the price was tripled.
Not the longest game on the main maps but totaly worth its price and also has custom maps.
For me its a new twist on minesweeper beeing 3D and a fiew cool themes.
Holy hell the camera controls ARE SO BAD.
You zoom in and out with mouse wheel. You hold left mouse button to rotate. So far so good.
But there is no camera panning!
In order to actually move the camera around, you must double-click a block you'd like to center on. And jesus christ it makes playing even the first few simple levels just unbearable, as you need to constantly double-click your way around the puzzles. Horrible, just horrible.
Also in my very limited experience with the game I did not establish if you are expected to do some guessing to solve puzzles, but it feels like you do, which is definitely uninstall & refund for me.
The idea behind a 3D minesweeper has been done before but unfortunately this game does it poorly. The core puzzle mechanics are as you would expect. However, this game suffers from procedural generation. After the first few tutorial levels the game tells the player that each puzzle from there on out will be randomized. This randomization of puzzles can increase the longevity of a game, but you need to ensure that the player can solve each puzzle from start to finish with little to no guessing. Asteroids Minesweeper does not do this. The number of clues it provides are little and the clues themselves don't give enough information to make a proper deduction. This forces the player to make several guesses and risk making mistakes. If it weren't bad enough, the number of mistakes the player is allowed to make is limited and running out will force you to start over with another randomized puzzle. The gameplay is frustrating and solving a puzzle isn't very rewarding considering the majority of the puzzle was probably spent making guesses.
Requesting refund because of hitting several significant problems before finishing the tutorial, and also seeing these have been reported years ago and I can't expect them to be fixed:
- Doesn't work in Steam offline mode, with an empty error message.
- Froze after 10 minutes of play.
- Got out of sync on the second tutorial mission and I couldn't complete it.
Asteroids minesweeper is 3d minesweeper. As levels progress, the game will throw in a gimmick to spice things up. The game even features a small storyline. Overall entertaining, and cheap to boot.
A fun variation on minesweeper that really engages the brain. Has a short campaign that introduces fun concepts to play around with and then the ability to generate levels with any modifiers turned on.
It blows my mind how a game this good is so cheap. Absolutely recommend for people who love Minesweeper. This game is also good for those who are new to Minesweeper as it'll teach you how to play to an extent. It does suffer from sometimes having to make guesses, which also happens in standard minesweeper, but overall it's an incredible game; however, unlike standard Minesweeper, you have 5 tries, so screwing up once won't end the game.
Personally I'd recommend learning how to play standard Minesweeper before tackling this game, because this game takes the minesweeper formula and makes it 3D, so understanding the standard game will make this game a lot more interesting and easier to pick up.
Dirt cheap and incredibly fun. Buy this game.
The idea of this game is quite cool.Basically, this's the minesweeper game in 3d.
The game itself is awesome, but you must be patient to really enjoy this game.
There're two major flaws I want to complain in this game.
One is its awkward camera angle, Sometimes you click on a cube you don't intend to and trigger a mine.
One is the hints. They're quite confusing and made me misunderstood several times throught the gameplay.
It's quite cheap, if you like this kind of game, you may give it a try.
The idea behind this game is cool, the execution is not. The devs should have stuck to the tried and true Minesweeper methods such as flagging suspect cells. Also, the camera and its controls are annoying. Additionally, you will occasionally have to take a guess which is uncool, although admittedly, that was also a negative for the original Minesweeper. The worst thing is that it's buggy. Mine bugged out on the very first tier. On A-5 which is the final level for the tier, I got down to the last two mines and then all the cells disappeared, playing with the camera and clicking all over the place did nothing. I can forgive other drawbacks but a game breaking bug like this is inexcusable.
If you like Minesweeper and wanna try it in 3D, it's probably your best option. Plays really well.
The camera can be confusing at times, but that is probably in the nature of the whole concept.
The game also introduces new ideas over time, which is also nice and mixes it up a bit.
For the low price, definitely a game to recommend!
The game was quite fun for me and its nice to train logical thinking and 3 dimensional orientation. Especially the music was nice and "chilling". So the game itself gets a positive rating. What I rate it negative for is the forced online mode. You can only play as long as Steam is in online mode. I have seen this nowhere mentioned. I prefer to play with Steam in offline mode. And I also don't see a reason why this must be online. Thus a thumbs down for bad communication and a "useless" feature.
I personally love minesweeper and I am almost always ready to try out variations in minesweeper. I would say that this version is by far, THE BEST! I could play the conventional minesweeper without having to think at all but this one needs more attention. I would definitely recommend this game.
It takes a while to get a hang of it- especially toggling between reveal and sweep mode, and the camera. But since there is an option to place the camera on any tile, I change the position on the camera often. (However, that might be the difficulty since I do not have a touch screen.)
I was not sure if I would enjoy it when I bought the game but now I am glad I did.
I never thought I'd say something like this... This game is horribly underpriced! Price set at 0,99 €/$/whatever places this game in the same price tier with shameless Plants vs. Zombies rip-off and some other terrible games I won't mention here. This makes it easy to overlook this little gem. It's exactly what description says - minesweeper in 3D with few twists here and there. So if you're minesweeper fan, most likely you'll enjoy this game.
Pretty decent, but could be better.
The controls aren't bad, but can be a tad clunky. The problem comes mainly from the camera handling. I would have preferred a "first person" view better, rather than zooming in and out of a specific square, as the current system is less accurate.
I liked that the game changed things up in every chapter with a new feature each time, though they didn't really do much. What I didn't like was that solving the puzzles involved quite a bit of guesswork if the level didn't use the cube shape, so you couldn't really solve them elegantly by using logic. Fortunately, the game mitigates this slightly by letting you make a mistake or two without instantly failing you.
Though the level customization is a bit restricted, it adds a bit of replayability in case you're done with the main game.
Overall, for its price, it is not a bad purchase at all. It's an adequate time killer if you're bored and regular Minesweeper isn't doing it for you anymore.
Time for a change of mind, we go 3D!

Why ON EARTH is this game so cheap?!!
That's not a comment I make often, but if you enjoy a casual Minesweeper game (whether it's the original or more advanced variants such as the equally marvellous Hexcells series), then you'll enjoy this.
You're presented with shape masses made of cubes. Some of those cubes contain explosive material (the 'mines') which you need to identify and pick off. The same principles as Minesweeper apply: the number on the cube indicates how many mines are in adjacent cubes (and the contact can be cube faces, their edges or even just corner to corner), so if you unveil a cube with ZERO on it, every other cube that makes ANY kind of physical contact with that cube is safe to unveil. The unique style of THIS game (besides its 3D) is that when you've identified where an explosive cube is located, you can remove it, after which all surrounding 'clue' cube numbers drop by one to reflect its removal, further helping you to solve the remainder of the puzzle.
It's both fun AND tricky at the same time. Getting used to Minesweeper in a 3D space takes some adjustment, and I found the mouse controls a little clunky at first when trying to navigate around my mass of cubes. This is a game that seems to have been designed for tablet8/phone first which might explain this to a degree, but once familiar with the various clicks and how to switch viewing angles easily) it became a joy to play.
Quite honestly, this is the best £0.71 fun I've had in ages. Yep, that's right: an enjoyable game that costs less than most postage stamps, is the third of the price of a Starbucks coffee or McD burger. Honestly, the devs should really consider a Hexcells indie price because it is worth that.
You get what you are advertised, a 3D minesweeper. Thats really all there is to say, and that said, its good imo. I do have a couple of complaints. You cannot mark bombs which is annoying, although this increases the difficulty its still very irritating above all. I beat the first level, but the game did not realize i beat it. So i am basically stuck on the first level even though i beat it. Fix this and easy profit.
Loving the idea of this 3D minesweeper, truly! Two points to be mentioned though:
1. It seems that I cannot use the "R/T+right click" to eliminate the "0" cubes even in a row smoothly. They are always erased too much like deep to another layer or just stuck in halfway, maybe still several left to be clicked again. It would be nice to have a check mark function with shortcut keys or a dragging function for an easier elimination of all the tagged cubes simultaneously (different from"C+right click" for the adjacent cubes detected for no mines).
2. Who else is confused as me about this stochastic/random machanics for the begining of each game from the section B? Sometimes I get not even a digital clue in a discrete model, and sometimes up to 5 figures (usually "1"or"2") but all seperately on the surface of a cuboid. Not always do I know where to start with +_+ or maybe I'm just too stupid...
