As always it is about expectations. When you expect a coop game you are a few years too late. However if you expect a single player game with a good story it is worth picking up on a discount.
In my opinion it is one of the better ARPGs out there.
There are some flaws and bugs which are not getting fixed anymore, but none of them is game breaking.
Endgame levelling is a chore and sometimes annoying due to weird design decisions, like random immunity shields on enemies for certain damage types.
It should have been tweaked after making the game single player only but that's maybe just me.
All in all it is still worth a playthrough
Imagine selling over one million copies of your game within the first month of release, and you take the money and run four and a half years later, all the while your game isn't even finished. Fuck this company. Enjoy your yacht.
Perhaps deserves its chance. Should I recommend a dead title, though? An abandoned game?
I spent so many hours in this game but just because I didn't have any other game that would meet my needs at this moment. This game has several bugs and MANY things that makes it irritating to play, extremely rng driven crafting. The only thing good I have to say about this game is the possibilities of builds you can make (although not everything will work the best) but event that would need the right equipment to suit the build needs (already told about the rng gear, right?) I got to lvl 90 with a very good build and equipment that I got lucky to drop but now I want to test other builds and equips and nothing works well. Sad that I wanted to get full achievements but I just don't have the desire to use the same build forever when there's so many possibilities
Devs abandoned the game before completing it.
game is trash
Lousy game. Lousy developers. Shutdown their work on Wolcen for future projects. Definitely not going to support any of their future work since running away for them is natural, as opposed to fixing their game.
its good. a bit boring solo but what coop game isn't? i can defiantly recomend this one though
I waited very long for this game to be actually up to standards, but it wasn't possible. It's rarely that anyone managed to achieve excellence in this genre. Still a good game maybe to complete once and forget, but not for me
Wolcen is a mess of a game. I recently picked it up after they announced Online Play was being shuttered. As such, this review treats Wolcen as a singleplayer experience.
Wolcen has a solid foundation. It has decent moment-to-moment gameplay with satisfying combat and movement and decent character progression. The skill tree has an interesting "rotation" mechanic, allowing you to rearrange it to suit your needs. Your active skills have modifiers to their behavior that can be freely switched at any time, similar to Diablo 3's skill system. This opens the doors for lots of experimentation and varied behavior in skills. Gear crafting was almost cool, but the complete lack of transparency made it more frustrating to use. Voice acting made the admittedly cliche story much more engaging. The post-game has a cool "city-builder" gameplay loop, but it doesn't feel fully fleshed out.
The progression system's negatives begin to show themselves in the endgame. Many mechanics like multiple projectiles don't work properly, pets are an after thought, a loot filter is sorely needed, and leveling past 70 is a snooze without using cheats. Most stats are "score based" in their design, meaning they become less effective at higher level zones to artificially increase the difficulty by making your character weaker. Your crit/resistances/dodge rate/ailment application all get less effective the more you progress, bricking builds that rely on them. Enemy resistances also scale this way, with no way to shred them, which makes life leech less and less effective as you progress. You also cannot swap weapon sets, or save loadouts for skills/transmogrification, which would have been a great QoL addition.
There's a lot holding back Wolcen technically. The final cutscene of the game fails to load, skipping you to the credits. The UI doesn't always behave, where you can't pick up items or select certain UI elements, sometimes locking you in a menu. Animations are rough around the edges. The difficulty of the campaign needed to be cranked up a ton. It just got boring quickly even on max difficulty, despite the scenarios and maps being fairly well done.
For most people, I don't recommend picking up Wolcen. If you're morbidly curious, or starved for ARPG content, it's good value when discounted under $10.
This is a great and underrated game, but it had a really rough launch, so during that time, it received a lot of negative feedback (which is why the reviews aren't great). The Wolcen team fixed the bugs, added more content, added a good endgame system, added a bunch of quality of life, and added polish. If you like ARPGs, I recommend adding this to your library.
Game could've been good if gave time to finish the product before release but sadly it didn't happen
Belongs on a Phone.
A simple Game yet a vary good example of its type I would recommend for players 12-14'ish or those new to rpgs. olders players would have looted dungons and leveld up a hero so many times that this game would offer nothing new and vary little challenge. This game really belongs on a phone rather than a pc as it lacks the depth of a fully fleshed out title with linier gameplay and no way for the player to have any effect on what happens next. buy cheap to loose yourself for afew hours but your unlikly to return for a second gaming sesh :/ but its cheap and suits a younger audiance. its right for the right people.,..just not for old men like me :)
Wolcen is one of the better ARPG games out there. While it may not be perfect, it has just enough reiterations of old ideas and enough fresh takes, that it's worth playing.
DEAD GAME, SERVERS SHUT DOWN.
DO NOT BUY AT FULL PRICE
I bought this game because Skillup recommended it when it first released. Several hours after purchase I was left wondering when I would get access to the game SU played because I sure never got to it.
Not to mention the developer didn't finish the game, yanked the rug out from the multiplayer, and doesn't even allow local co-op. Don't buy this game at full price. Don't buy this game on discount.
Wolcen: Lords of Mayhem - A Beautifully Flawed Experience
Wolcen: Lords of Mayhem is a game that initially captivated me with its ambitious ideas and unique concepts. For a while, I truly enjoyed it. Now that the game is in its finished state, however, it’s clear that many of those ambitions fell short.
One of the standout features was the web-based skill grid, which could rotate to offer different builds. In theory, it’s a fascinating design choice that should allow for deep customization. Unfortunately, in practice, it feels more like an over-complicated gimmick than a meaningful gameplay mechanic.
The endgame content is underwhelming, and the highlight of Act 4—the boss with a rogue-like transformation mechanic—was intriguing but ultimately squandered. Instead of evolving into something substantial, it became just another excuse for repetitive grinding.
Where Wolcen undeniably shines is in its visuals. For a game from an AA studio, the graphics are genuinely superb, standing toe-to-toe with bigger-budget titles. The art direction and technical fidelity deserve high praise.
But despite its visual polish, the gameplay suffers due to clunky controls. In a combat system that demands precise dodging and positioning, the lack of fluid responsiveness grates on the nerves. It’s a glaring flaw that becomes increasingly frustrating over time.
With better alternatives available in the ARPG market, I can’t recommend Wolcen: Lords of Mayhem. It’s a shame because the potential was there, but the execution left much to be desired.
It's Fine
Wolcen seeks to follow in the steps of every other top-down ARPG and executes almost everything that you need to make a competent game.
However, with the amount of better ARPGs out there I can not recommend this (unless it's super cheap on sale)
I like the idea of the giant skill web, but ultimately it really isn't much more than a giant web of incremental number bonuses with a handful of neat skills that don't change things significantly.
The Controls are generally fine, but the slight clunkiness of moving and then being in combat, some skills being easily interrupted by existing and combat being laughably easy it's really not a fun challenge.
Combat styles go to:
Melee weapons: Daggers, Swords, Hammers, Axes - All swing and hit
Bow - Plink plink
Staff - Swish and flick a small orb.
All are expected to be interwoven with skills which is most of your damage, but consume a resource that your weapon regenerates. However this means that Magic users are stuck with their Staves, even though there is an off-hand weapon to use the magic skills, there's no one-handed weapon to regenerate the magic resource.
Ultimately, it's really not worth picking this up. Especially as you can't even mess around with friends anymore since they've closed the servers so it's all offline now. A shame really, as the game is competent, just not as good as every other Hack and slash ARPG option out there.
They never finished the game. They just shuttered the doors, said, "Good Enough" and walked away, shutting down the multiplayer aspect in the process.
Not even the will to offer local co:op or dedicated servers to play with friends. They just shutdown the servers and ripped money from alot of people which bought a online co:op game to enjoy. Thanks for the Scam.
We bought this to play in co-op. Guess we should have directly played it, because now they removed co-op from the game. Definitely a company to avoid.
4/10
Extremely underwhelming Arpg experience.
The graphics are nice, but that's about it. I played offline quite a bit, which doesn't show in the statistics, and it happens quite a lot that your character just vanishes.
Yeah. All progress gone.
It was fun when it was multiplayer and after some of the bugs were worked through but the loss of multiplayer makes it pretty boring.
They wiped my gold and gear and base building progress, gave me some useless generic "Unique" gear to replace it. Now i'm getting killed every operation and unable to progress.
RIP uninstalling forever now

Critical Review Wolcen: Lords of Mayhem (Dear Developers Read!)
I'm someone that love ARPG's in all forms, games like but not limited to: Diablo, Torchlight, Path of Exile, The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing, Grim Dawn - just to name a few and Wolcen is NOT as fun as the others for many, many reasons in which I will go over soon but before that let's thank today's sponsor: "I DON'T GIVE A FK™" ...huh... that's a little on the nose... Anyways!

STORY
The story of this game is as follows you choose between a male or a female and that takes the precedence in the campaign as the 'Ascended' one. You have trained underneath 'Heimlock the Grand Inquisitor' the leader of the "Republic’s Army of the Purifiers" and are known as the "Children of Heimlock." A religious group known as "Brotherhood of Dawn" has attacked and infiltrated a place known as 'Crimson Keep' so of course you are one of the people that needs to punish them (y'know like spank them daddy). You and two others; which I will call "Wood A" and "Wood B" because they have equally if not let less of a character than actual planks of wood and I'm feeling resentful so I don't really give a crap. Is all of this important... well, both yes and no. The short answer would be yes but the long answer would be a no. The whole point of this opening is to put you on your path where you will discover that you are an 'Ascended' and there are two other cults lurking in the shadows. You progress through the lands fighting said evil HOWEVER here is where I stop being nice. The story takes a deep nose dive into the pits of Hell where it drown not only in lava and flames but goes through the Devil's rectum and then fed to a demon that pisses it out again... you get the point. Why you may ask? Because they mention another cult but other than a few words a cutscene THEY ARE NOWHERE IN GAME TO BE FOUND and if that's not enough they make a big deal of a few characters by building them up however they have no significance in the story whatsoever so why in the holy Hell are they getting so much screen time? Are they trying to become the next Top Model or something!? Needless to say but the story just didn't cut it, also it doesn't help that they change the voice lines but not the freaking game dialogue to match what they are saying also the game is full of grammatical errors which is driving me insane just hire professional writers it's not that difficult!

GAMEPLAY
The combat is unrewarding in many aspects and they could have done more with what they had. The skills that you use lack the fun free-for-everything approach of 'Path of Exile' and/or the strategic infidelity of 'Diablo II' leaving it somewhere in-between in a void where no man should wander *shudders* and that both gimps and holds the game back severely. For example here let me take the magical spell/skill that I like to use called: 'Annihilation' which is a purple lazer that deals Aether damage which is apart of the Occult damage group which... wait, we haven't talked about that yet so let me go over that really quick so that you can get your brain melt sooner rather than later.
There are 3 main stats for damage and resistances in the game:
- Material
- Elemental
[*]Occult
Material is for Physical, Toxic & Rend.
Elemental is for Fire, Frost & Lightning.
Occult is for Aether, Sacred & Shadow.
Are you with me so far? I can't blame you for falling asleep this isn't exactly riveting or Earth shattering stuff, well maybe it will shatter your mind... in a bad way... anyways, I used the skill 'Annihilation' because I found it fun to use and in this game you don't have any spells when you start you actually find them from killing enemies which is kind of
Give me a moment... 1 mississippi, 2 mississippi... OK I'm fine now.
So let me explain my anger here because I haven't done that and if I did then it was poor. Annihilation has several things that COULD make it fantastic and amazing to use but why have fun, it's only a game, you know something that was made with entertainment in mind but heh what do I know right... *Sigh* So there is an "upgrade" that makes it so that you can shoot 2 lazers instead of just 1 lazer and that gimps your damage which is only fair because it gives you the advantage of attacking at two angles but it shouldn't gimp your damage too much because otherwise it becomes useless as an "upgrade" and that is the problem with the whole kit, there is another upgrade that makes it so the lazer can travel through enemies and hit enemies behind the first enemy hit but that has the problem of "nerfing" your damage by 20 f-ing %... that's insane! You might think: "20%? That's not bad, I don't understand why you are freaking out so much?" OK, fair enough then let me explain: this game divides damage into two groups "Additive damage" and "Multiplication damage;" the first only adds to your already existing damage so if the lazer deals 3000 damage on its own then you add that to your total damage count and if it is the second then it will multiply your total damage by .2% with the 3000 that the lazer does which is a huge damage boost so you take your total damage which is let's say 5000 in this case then you add the lazer damage to that which makes it 8000 then you multipy that damage with .2 which will give you another 1600 damage ontop of what you already got bringing the total to a whooping 9600 damage and that's without counting anything coming for your gear. Having upgrades that ups the damage isn't a solution to the problem. They could have had it so that the upgrades adds benefits without taking away too much especially when we are talking about just utility things that is suppose to make it so that you can have several different builds and play around with and have fun but no you are locked and if you don't like it then too f-ing bad, go cry to your bodypillow about it.
Also I'm not gonna sit here and go through every single thing stat wise, I rather keep my sanity thank you very much.
I would like to see them remove these ridiculous damage increasing/reducing numbers that they call upgrades and instead use their brains to figure out that hey maybe we can put some fun things in there instead, like being able to plant a lazer bomb that fires lazer to enemies that comes near it or have a lazer shoot in one angle continously and you can place up to 3 of them and if they are gonna have so that something gives you increased damage then it must work with an idea like for example: if they have an upgrade that makes the lazer short, let's say it halves it in length then it could be more powerful because now instead of a long range attack you have made a viable melee build where you can build a Sorcerer that can stack Material resistance and kill stuff from close range.
"META" is not made/created it's discovered so allow people to have some fun.

END-GAME
Remember Act 4? Yeah that again... OK I'll explain. In Act 1-3 you have actual places to go it feels like an adventure where you go to different environments and meet and talk to different people even if it is slightly underwhelming it is still better than nothing. However in Act 4 you are in Stormfall City and that's all there is until you manage to kill the last boss. You do unlock a few extra things after killing the last boss that you can buy for an absurd amount of gold which is only there to pander out the game more, fun for a brain-dead person. FK THIS!
Played when the servers were shot down already. so online players might be drawn away.
Minus a few crashes, and the grind at the end. The controls, the gameplay and the story were fun.
Greatest ARPG ever made. Chris Wolcen approved 👍🏼
The first three acts are fine, but the idiots who came up with the fourth act shouldn't be making video games.
The developers refused to address the actual issues with the game for YEARS and now it's dead. Modern gaming in a nutshell.
Having played around 75 hours of this game, I can say that it made me nostalgic for playing Grim Dawn - which I put 600 hours into... This game is not bad, but it's lacking. Still for the content it has you can still get some fun out of it, but get it on sale, especially now that online servers have been shutdown.
This is one of the better Diablo like games out there. It is in the top ten. The gameplay is really good. its only SP and OFFLINE! which is a huge plus over Diablo 4....
I honestly really enjoyed this game and got FAR more than my money's worth in terms of entertainment bang for the buck.
It's got a few quirks, but the storytelling and storyline are fantastic and dark. If you enjoyed Diablo 3 but wish the storyline was a bit more like the Warhammer grimdark stories, this is definitely worth a go.
I had played on single player primarily but loved the bloody thing and can't wait for what I hope will eventually be a Wolcen II down the line. Even when spinning the multiplayer game servers down the developer did the right thing and made offline conversion simple and easy so you didn't lose your characters.
Honest to god 8 out of 10 (8/10), it's the kind of rugged hidden gem you used to get REALLY excited about when you found an indy game that you hadn't previously heard of before.
Not a bad game but very buggy and awkward gameplay
I feel like reviews are too harsh on this game. It's nothing special and the story is boring, but the combat and skill customisation is really fun.
Definitely worth getting on sale if you like ARPGs, even just for 1 quick play-through.
This game is simply OK, but only one a deep sale. Otherwise don't bother, there isn't enough content here to make it your next ARPG.
Definitely more deserving than the mixed reviews sentiment it's getting. Got it on sale, and it's worth every cent. While there are many rough corners (and the loss of multiplayer), the story so far is relatively engaging (more so than D4) and there are interesting enough mechanics to not be a carbon copy of POE/Diablo/et al.
Some of my gripes:
- You can't combine potions or gems?? Leading to a ton of inventory waste? Even then, gem levels don't seem to differentiate that much from one to another
- Targeting enemies/things can sometimes be painful and not seamless (e.g. as a spellcaster, trying to hit breakable items works 60% of the time)
- Equipment/gold/etc seems very unbalanced. Loot never seems amazing (even legendaries) and you get a pittance of gold from selling items
What I enjoyed:
- For a 'indie' game, it's beyond beautiful in a way that AAA games wished they could. There are many many moments worth taking a breather from the spam-rolling and spell-casting, to just enjoy the aesthetic and design of the maps
- The skill tree is pretty decent (although i did wish the opportunity cost of using a set of skills over another was less severe). Unlike the POE skilltree which requires a master's degree and then some, this was very straightforward + extensive enough.
- The soundtrack is just... 10/10. I also most enjoyed the voice acting
Wolcen could have been something great with better studio support and/or investment, but whatever has come of it is still pretty darn enjoyable!
The amount of people giving this game a negative review because online functionality got taken down is absurd.
The amount of people claiming it's just a quick cash grab is absurd. No cash grab receives the amount of updates this got.
You literally got entire new acts added to the game, but no, that isn't enough for people, declare it a cash grab!
Get a grip and enjoy an actually very good game. I may not play it often but I always have a fun time when I do.
Great Potential, but Lacks Depth
I wish the story had more focus instead of the co-op feature, which feels unnecessary if it’s being removed later. The game is enjoyable, but something is missing. Also, CryEngine really strains my system, even with decent specs. Overall, I’d rate Wolcen a 6.5/10
beside the problems ( especially in the beginning ) i liked the game. Some interesting ideas and gameplay.
This game has mixed or negative reviews cuz of 2 problems:
1) there was co-op and then its gone
2) at some point, for some bllshit reason, you will need to fight vs lieutenants to make Main boss weaker, and no way to go straight to the main boss, and this lieutenants and their mob swarms are 15-20 lvls stronger then you, so you will need to gring boring repetative side missions to up your lvl's .
BUT! aside of this negative aspects (i actually uninstalled on the 2nd one) with a big discount, the game is nice and cheap diablo clone
Extremely broken! Unable to finish the game after I put so many hours. Bugs and glitches all around.
I don't know what the fuss is about. It's a good game, on par with any other great isometric hack & slash
The game is excellent. The developers borrowed the best from similar projects: Grim Dawn, Sacred, PoE, Lost Ark, Diablo. This game is similar to all of them at once. There's nothing wrong with that if the game turned out to be engaging. The developers abandoned their creation, which is unfortunate. I decided to familiarize myself with the story. The story is trivial, but it's presented in an interesting way. I like the graphics. The customization system is well implemented. The ability to choose your own path is the main thing. The absence of standard classes is not new, and here the player can choose their own path. The passing locations are not difficult, the boss fights made me sweat. Skill leveling is pleasing: there is the possibility of choosing preferred elements and additional abilities, depending on the need. The weapon and armor system is quite good. If you don't focus on the death of the project and its similarity to all isometric games, you can have a good time.
This game is just ok. It's unoriginal in visual style and narrative. It also has a few flaws that don't really ruin gameplay. Recommended if you like a standard Diablo clone (though Wolcen is more specifically a Path of Exile clone). Try to buy it at a bargain price, because whatever bugs you may encounter are probably never going to be fixed.
Single player ARPG (diablo-like) which doesn't look like its browser based.
I bought this game years ago but enver got around playing lots of it and despite some rough edges the game is fine as is and will give some proper time. Yes the servers have been shut down and the online functionnalitiees are off, however the game is still plyable as a single player game and has lots of content for a single player title.
Now I read most reviews and do find funny that most gamers are moaning about the servers being shutdown when they weren't playing the game when there was online functinnalities, the 10 or so who did well got enough hours out of it, get over yourselves the game is still in a very playable state, some games shutdown forever and we can't play them after buying them. Does it suck to not be able to play coop anymore? Sure and online coop would have been nice, but on the other hand it could have shutdown for good and we would have no more game.
Yeah it's sold at 25$ which is more than enough for the content you're getting. So for anyone searching for a single player ARPG with nice graphics because you have that hitch then go for it, the game is often on sale and you will get some good time out of it. I would say the game reminds me a lot of Van Helsing in its structure and approach but is different in character building. The Negative reviews are mostly gamers as usual unhappy to not have multiiplayer which they were barely touching.
took the money and ran. game was a 4/10 diablo clone that just could never figure out what they wanted to do with.
Was a nice game during beta. After launch everything went downhill. Was waiting for them to fix it, but they decided to just shut down the servers.
