I love my grandpa and doing farmer-ish stuff in the village.
A strong entry the turn based RPG genre. It has the nostalgic feel of Genesis and SNES games but has a lot more depth. There are times where it becomes a slog and could do with pacing adjustments on the some of the quests, but overall its fun and well worth playing.
Really great game. Sad I only now discover this gem. Already 2 hours in and I am just roaming between 10 houses doing and collecting stuff ^^
Hello traveler.
TLDR: Game is good, very old school like feeling. Nice story, very basic but engaging, you are the hero, you save your people.
The story is definitely basic. But not in a bad way. Without spoiler too much. You are a hero, and you start your journey with uncovering the secrets behind disappearance of some people in your village. While you do all the quests, you uncover more about your parents, about the world around you. And with progression, it becomes more heroic. You gonna fight undead, see dragons, fight evil. Story is told through scrolls you find thanks to exploration, and from npcs. Also with environment story telling. You are basically the white man on a quest to save your loved one from certain death.
There are puzzles, they are not too hard, but also not as easy like the modern AAA puzzles. You gonna have to use your thinking box a bit. But it feels rewarding, you get a warm feeling around your heart. And also good loot that you can use in most cases.
Exploration feels good. There are bunch of dungeons you can explore, with own bosses inside and loot. So it is almost always worth to enter one. Also the world is handcrafted, and the dungeons do feel different from each other.
Gameplay. The enemies are generally a small challenge, so the potions, food and other misc items do feel like they have purpose. Crafting, like alchemy and cooking can make the fights much easier for you, So when you get your potions, food, magic scrolls etc. it is better to use them for fights then to stockpile for big bosses. You will be able to have enough, thanks to crafting, shops or just finding "stealing" it. Moving your character is bit odd. I would recommend to turn on the grid and use right click often instead of WASD.
Questing. It is like old school games. You get a marker on your map sometime, but no arrows or anything in the modern game way. You have to read the quests to know what to do. Don't worry, no need to read a book, it is 1 to 2 small pages only.
Combat itself isn't anything special. Turnbased, you choose ability, you use it. I played as mage. You get bunch of cool spells. Little cool detail, when you kill animal with fireball, the meat is cooked already.
Personal note? Well, I would recommend this game for its story, the handcrafted world, a crafting system that does add to the gameplay a lot. Oh, and you can build your own home in your little safespace, where you can craft all the stuff.
Oldschool RPG play...
I liked the retro vibes but there is no quality of life
its fun for a classic rpg style game. would be great if they updated it with better movement/combat mechanics - 6/10
This game is pretty much everything it says on the tin, and I was loving it. However, I cannot recommend purchasing it or playing it for one very unfortunate reason. It has a game breaking bug that is likely to happen and end your save. NPC's will sometime disappear from the game world and never return, including ones vital to progression. For me, it happened with the NPC "Leonard" after 9 hours, too late to refund. Searching for a solution I discovered that this has been an issue for many years and has never been fixed.
Sadly, therefore, I must recommend a pass and to avoid a wasted evening.
Good Game
a big part of this game is building your own place. within 10 mins of starting that i decided to stop playing.
the game uses square tiles, and placed floors/walls/etc take up whole tiles, but the walls arent 1 tile wide, they just run thru the middle, so the floors stick out from under the wall, which looks kinda crappy.
you also cant just rotate items, you want to make a square room you gotta select each of the 4 individual corners one at a time from the menu.
and if u want a floor, click and drag, right? nope, 1 tile at a time, make a mistake you can remove, but all resources are lost.
it doesnt really seem like a lot of thought has been put into the building system, its just there. i googled how to rotate tiles, and got a hit from nearly 10 years ago. same game, same issues.
a rotate system is a no-brainer, if floors are gonna take up a whole tile, then the walls need to as well.
if using skinny walls, then the basic-tile needs to be divided in 4, which matches the wall pattern, so you can place 1/4,1/2, or 3/4 tiles.
and the farming? omg. click the tile, click water, move to next... no click and drag here either, and then click on each individual tile with the seed, that is a little faster, but even in the real world farmer used to throw down seeds by the handful, which is basically just real world click and drag.
considering building is supposed to be an integral part of the game, not a lot of time seems to have been put into it. too clunky, clumsy, and inflexible. with a little thought it could easily have been done much better.
Game has its issues but it's a lot of fun as long as you don't play it in the hardest mode.
You follow the story (which starts out great, but then loses quality) and do some side quests to get more experience. Monsters do not respawn and are generally not worth killing because they barely give experience. You have your own house you can build and craft stuff in.
I finished the game as a warrior (using some spells) in the hardest mode and it was frustrating and had to save-scum all the time because I always had like 50% chance to hit due to the game mechanics. Then I finished it again in mage in normal difficulty (followed the main story and it took me less than 10 hours) so I could get the remaining achievements, and it was a lot more fun. I could have played a third time as an archer (I hear it's the best class) but there wasn't more achievements to get.
I enjoyed over 100 hours of fun almost for free. Recommended.
Fun game but I can't read any menus. I'm playing on a 65" flat screen tv and non of the menus are legible from my couch. I can't even read if there is an option for increasing ui font or size. I know i'm old but usually i've been able to find a way around these things. I'll keep trying because I like these types of games but every game made today should have a scalable ui. I'm not at a desk 18" from the screen I'm on a couceh 6'-8' from my screen every menu could be 5x bigger and still not fill the screen. Again I stronly recommend this game it is fun and the story I've been able to read thus far is intriguing.....wish I could read more.
Not worth your time.
Everything requires this LP. So you have to balance between being weak in combat and farming or just good in combat. Should be separate set of skills.
I didn't want to leave a negative review, but in a fit of rage I uninstalled the game and decided to leave this review as a warning to players: DON'T PLAY WITH A MAGE!
I played for about 40 hours with one, holding on as long as I could, but there comes a time when the unpleasant gameplay this class brings will drive you crazy. The problem with playing as mage is simple: when a spell fails, you are punished harshly because mana is very valuable. And guess what? You're going to miss spells all the time, even if you're wearing light armor to avoid the penalty. Even with only a 3% accuracy penalty, I missed 6 (SIX!) spells in a row, using up all my mana, against an enemy who drains your mana and runs twice a turn (i.e. when he gets close to the mage with no armor, no mana, no s#it, there's nothing else to do). And you won't only miss projectiles, but basically everything. You try to freeze the enemy, you miss the spell. You try to silence him so he can't cast spells... oops! You missed the mute spell. So now you have to retreat while consuming your precious potions, which require a whole laborious process to make (from farming to alchemy, which consumes expensive bottles).
In other words. The whole experience is miserable. The game is extremely unpleasant to play, even though there are some good things about it.
In short: there is something of value in this game, but please, make an archer, ignore the wizard completely, unless you want to subject yourself to digital torture.
