Ocean Rift features 12 habitats ready for you to explore. Environments range from coral reefs, mangrove swamps and shipwrecks, to the deep sea, Arctic and Atlantis.
Activate the education mode to learn more about the animals you come across. There are over 40 fully narrated information points to find.
Ocean Rift's star animals are animated using an advanced procedural animation system. Its aim is to produce life-like behavior, and display some of the range of motion and dexterity shown by real-life equivalents. Dolphins for example will twist, twirl and swim through hoops in an endless variety of ways, ensuring that no two visits to Ocean Rift will be the same!
* (Well, technically extinct prehistoric reptiles)

Great for what it was, BUT, never purchase it on Steam if you want the Mixed Reality features. That is ONLY available as a Meta Store direct download.
I'm not seeing any options for the mixed reality version anywhere???
good game and all but a few complaints if your playing on a valve index 1 you cant turn so you cant play this on a couch like how you can when playing this on quest (witch is dumb cuz quest does not have a cord so you can stand up and a index has a cord so its hard to stand with it) 2 some animals are just GONE the option for the blue whale ISN'T EVEN THERE please help cuz i liked seeing the blue whale on the quest and i wanna see it in index and 3 there is no radar no mater what i do there is no radar please help me with this
Fun little VR experience, worth it for the price. Has different "exhibits" centered around different sea creatures. Can quickly turn into a horror game if you leave the cage during the great white exhibit though. Also in the mosasaur exhibit, where you do not get a cage. Other than that, it's a chill mellow time. The dinosaur exhibits are quite cool too if you go and look around, there's more to it than just the title animal, plenty of bonus prehistoric sea creatures to discover. I've also heard rumors that there's a megalodon in one of them, but have never been able to find it.
There isn't much replay value here, but I still believe its worth the buy to explore, especially for the kiddos. You pick a sea creature and you load into their area. You can interact with some creatures, but not much. Still, I recommend trying it out if you're on the fence. You can always refund it if you don't like it!
Don't buy. This is the first game since rollercoasters that made me feel sick in VR. Your vision is so poor you don't know where you're going and once you finally reach the animal they move off. They're also not to scale nor is the graphics quality high. And there's very little else to see. Would it have been so hard to make this less bland? This left a lot to be desired and I'm never playing again.
WMR: Great. Swimming with Humpback whales, dolphins etc. Watching a great white shark attack your shark cage. The sea floor looks a bit cartoon-ish but the animal figures are very well made, movements are life-like. Not a game more a relaxing, fun experience. I keep coming back.
I force everyone I meet to go into the depths unknowingly. Pro Tip: Make sure they wear a diaper first.
Ocean Rift isn't a realistic simulation in the slightest, so don't expect that. A few examples: If it exists you can go through it! (there is no collision detection with like anything), Most of the "bigger" sea critters are most certainly not too scale & you can't interact with the aquatic life, besides sharks "eating" you (Literally just charges you with mouthopen with no sound & little naunce)
Where this game does shine however is allows you to just sightsee @ your own pace with an intuitive control scheme, freak out whenever you see a rock come into focus, & has a soothing narrator that tells you facts about animals if you turn it on in settings (it is off by default).
So I enjoy it because I bought it to tackle my thalassophobia (fear of the ocean) & for most people this game should be an easy buy with the Summer Sale, but someone who isn't just looking to get cheap adrenaline from being in an oceanscape & wants more immersion should look elsewhere.
Technical Issues:
I did have issues like other Rift S owners noted with the menu button not working, but after restarting my computer it seems to have resolved itself, although I have heard it's reoccurring unfortunately.
Honestly left a lot to be desired.
While I wasn't expecting anything blazingly high quality like TheBlu, I found myself disappointed by one key factor of this kind of VR game: The scale of the creatures and the environments.
People buy games like these usually to see these creatures in as close to a 1:1 scale as possible (I know I certainly do) and I found myself constantly looking at the Great White Sharks, Orcas, and Dolphins and thinking to myself, Wow, either these creatures are all juveniles or they are all way smaller than they are described in textbooks and graphs. A couple Google searches and some comparisons later and I realized I wasn't imagining these size discrepancies.
To be entirely honest, I didn't even notice this issue at first until I swam close to a random T-Rex skull in the Mosasaurus environment and realized that it was at least 300% larger than a normal adult T-Rex skull. After that, I couldn't help but notice the scale of the creatures were pretty far off and Brain Corals and the other miscellaneous biological environment pieces were also obscenely big. I was completely taken out of the moment and I couldn't get my mind off of it to re-immerse in good faith.
I must reiterate that when it comes to these kind of VR games, the accurate scale of creatures is crucial to the overall experience, and this game fails to meet that critical threshold. I have to unfortunately say avoid this one, Folks.
I've never played theBlu so I cannot compare. I bought this title so my little girl could see dolphins, she's almost four. Watching her with the headset on and crawling around the room and reaching her hand out to try and pet the turtles and talk to them is literally the best thing ever. Screw cellphones and candy crush, I'm taking my baby girl into the ocean to play with whales. I love living in the future.
Sure, it's pretty basic. The UI is meh, the hardest part is actually driving around looking for the animals, but there are plenty of other fish, crabs and whatnot to keep the scene alive while you wait or propel yourself around. Some of the animals you can interact with, some you can't. Yes, you will clip through them if you get too close. I usually sit her between my legs on the floor and I work the controls and her head is just constantly exploring..above, below, side to side, sometimes to the point where I have to tell her to stop and rest.
Totally worth the price imo - for kids, but personally I don't fire it up because it's fun for me. It is pretty cool dropping chutny outside of the shark tank though or watching the dolphins swim through rings.
Overall it's not a MUST BUY but if you have little ones, this is a very safe VR environment they can explore.
+The Blu on Steroids
+If on sale or bundle definitely worth price
+Swimming in virtual ocean is great.
-$9.99 price too much
4/5
Definitely a must "first VR experience" Maybe replacing The Blu with the amount of content it has. Although at the price of a tenner, I'd say wait until it's on sale if you can. Although if you're about to have a little party with a bunch of VR hungry people, you might want to try this out as one of their first experiences.

It's not a bad game. They are trying to make it educational. Unfortunately, the very first thing I saw when the environment, was piranha swimming in the ocean. A suggestion to the developer would be to replace the piranha with an ocean schooling fish. The no clipping does throw the experience off a little. There is a strange sense of panic as a coral snake swims into your chest. The little informational bits are a nice touch. Feels like getting to swim in the exhibits at a public aquarium with a tour guide. I would love to see a river biome version of the game.
Excellent if you are really interested in marine biology! Not sure if it's worth $10 though...
Pros:
- Variety of animals: There are a lot more animals than just those advertised in the main environments
- Sound effects: Animal calls, breathing noises, and ocean ambiance are all very immersive
- Animal and environment design
- Educational
Cons:
- Movement speed - with such huge enviornments to explore and such limited visibility, moving so slowly can feel monotonus at times. Also, the larger animals move faster than you do so if they swim away from you you won't be able to catch up to them
- Visibility range - You can't see very far in any direction. Be aware that this can lead to a really unsettling experience when you're swiming in open water looking for the more carnivorus creatures
- Price - I could recommend this for some people at $5, particuarly people with young children who have a real interest in marine biology. However, at an average playtime of 30min - 1hr I can't say that this is worth $10.
- You can swim through the animals
It be great if the 'Game' actually worked to see the potential that the Oculus can do. Be warned, not sure if it's just me but I can't even get passed the Main Menu.
Otherwise yeah, I'll request a refund.
I'll give myself a couple of more days to attempt the fix and address the issue for possible fix's. Otherwise, I'll have to go with the Refund.
Only just giving it a positive. (Would be more of a neutral if that existed on steam).
The good:
*No appearent timer wander around to your hearts content.
*Able to move around with little propellers.
*Not too expensive. Recommend you get it on sale.
*Works with windows media headsets (Even though not listed as compatable). The one thing that seems absent is the information bubbles. If you can live without them, the rest of it seems to function alright as far as I could tell.
The not so good:
*Needs better boundries. It's pretty disconcerting when fish swim straight into you or you end up with your head inside a whale if it gets too close.
*The environments are pretty basic. No attempt at realism here. The textures need to be better, everything including the animals looks a bit plasticy. The turtles, dolphins and snakes are particularly bad. Some of the animals (especially the seals) don't move right.
*Mesosaurs- Not a single one in sight despite being listed as having an environment.
*Needs much better sound! That bubbling only goes so far. The whale sounds were appreciated. The great white simulation was boring. Mainly I think this came down to the shark soundlessly bumping the cage. It really broke the immersion. Listen to some underwater soundtracks, there's all sorts of noises in the ocean that are missing from this program and would have improved it greatly.
The what?!
*Exploding firework hoops. I mean who thought that was a good idea? Should be able to turn it off. One minute I'm looking a seals in a "natural" environment and the next they're diving through hoops in the water that are exploding into brightly coloured lights. Very odd and not what I'd imagine most people are looking for in an ocean simulator.
*Pillars and sunken urns on the bottom of the ocean in prehistoric times. When playing, was trying to decide if the devs had been lazy and not noticed/cared that a whole lot of them were down there or if it was some kind of aliens/atlantis statement. Had some time to think about it as the mesosaur seemed MIA.
Conclusion: Ok but could be a lot better. The blu has better enviroments (although it's on a timer with less room to move around.) If this game were altered to have (or another came out with) better sound, detail, boundries and even a few interactions it could be a really brilliant game. As it is, it doesn't live up to its potential.
This is one of those “on the fence” reviews. I bought the game in hopes of it at least being on par with theBlu. It’s a similar experience but the quality just doesn’t match up. Considering that they’re both the same price, it’s clear this game went with quantity over quality since this has multiple experiences instead of only 3 (which is what theBlu offers) but if you get within touching distance of any of the creatures, it becomes pretty obvious that they are low detailed and meant to viewed from a medium or far distance for optimal enjoyment. This game also lets you move around in the environment, but with creatures being low detailed it doesn’t really seem like there’s much of a point other than positioning yourself where the game should have put you in the first place.
As I said, this is an on the fence review and the game is far from being terrible and if the creatures got a bit more attention it would probably be the best underwater experience so far. But where it is now, is just a mediocre experience.
For $US9.99, this isn't too bad. Ocean Rift is compared with theBlu a lot. Where theBlu has you in a small area where you can move around, Ocean Rift allows you to move around a much larger area in all directions.
theBlue gives you three set experiences on a set timer, whereas Ocean Rift gives you a larger number of dedicated experiences with no time limit.
Suggestions for updates:
Improved skin detail. All the animal families are identical. For example, the pod of dolphins all look the same - no scratches or slight imperfections to give them individuality. The whales are barnacle-free.
Clipping. You can move inside all of the animals. This is an intense immersion breaker. You can be swimming with some [identical] whales, when suddenly you'll swim inside their models.
Clipping is also present in the floor and wall rocks where boundries are not present, as well as seaweed and other decorations. The seaweed could be animated to sway to a side when the player interacts with it.
Resolution. Most of the animals and decorations look too bland and cartoony. This is where theBlu dominates.
its good, but needs more hi-res models and texture, low poly models are for things you cant go near to, seeing low poly models in front of you is just meehhh, overall if you can optimize it while in hi poly/hi-res textures this experience will slay. Looking forward for updates
Absolutely loved this experience. Far better than I expected. Lovely and smooth on a GTX1080. Throw rubber rings for the Dolphins etc to swim through using your trackpads or use side buttons to propel yourself around (use both controllers for faster speed). The voice commentary for each animal is very nice giving you some info on habits etc. Area's to swim around are really quite spacious. If you go real deep your right controller becomes a torch. Very good atmosphere and highly recommended if you liked 'theBlu'. Spider crabs, Snakes, Sharks, Dolphins, Whales and many more are here. The Great White startled me bigtime while I was in the cage. Now I know how Hooper felt lol. Great price too. Comes highly recommended!
If you are a SCUBA diver this game will bring back memories. The bubbles and breathing sounds are so realistic that I could taste the compressed air. Also, the apparent movement through the water mimics the weightlessness of actual diving. All this and you don't have to clear your ears! So, don't get distracted by the graphics detail and just enjoy your dive.
It's not bad, you have to like the almost cartoon-like style of the graphics. The best part for me was the great white shark encounter. I think it's perfect for kids but also adults only if they could reduce the price to 4-5 Euros instead of 10 currently.
6/10.
