I feel like a TOOL for buying it before the Anniversary update, but at least I did not bother with the grub achievement, so eh... it evens out
A Masterpiece of Storytelling and Gameplay
"Half-Life 2: Episode Two" is a prime example of why Valve is celebrated as one of the best game developers of all time. This continuation of Gordon Freeman’s journey seamlessly combines tight gameplay, emotional storytelling, and jaw-dropping set pieces.
Pros:
✅ Engaging Storyline: The game picks up right where Episode One left off, ramping up the stakes and providing more emotional depth to the characters. Alyx’s development is a highlight, and the ending? Absolutely unforgettable.
✅ Variety in Gameplay: From tense ambushes in the forest to adrenaline-fueled combat against Striders, Episode Two keeps things fresh at every turn.
✅ Beautiful Environments: The lush forest settings contrast with the oppressive urban and industrial environments of earlier installments, showcasing the Source Engine’s versatility.
✅ Challenging Combat: The enemy AI is sharp, and the addition of new enemies like the Hunter keeps you on your toes.
✅ Perfect Pacing: The game expertly balances exploration, combat, and storytelling, making every moment feel purposeful.
Cons:
❌ Cliffhanger Ending: If you’re playing this now, know that the story doesn’t resolve, as Valve has yet to release Episode Three or Half-Life 3. That said, it’s a cliffhanger worth experiencing.
At around 5-6 hours, Episode Two delivers an unforgettable experience that’s worth every second. It’s a must-play for any Half-Life fan or anyone who loves a great single-player adventure.
Final Verdict:
10/10 – A classic that every gamer should experience.
a poignant scene, an eternity's repose. it brings peaceful thoughts, does it not?
Half life 2 episode 2... absolute masterpiece i love the style new characters new functions and GNOME... 10/10
Episode 2 is where Valve honed many aspects of Half Life on the Source Engine.
The combat, puzzles, and vehicle sections all seamlessly blend together. And to top it all off, the character interaction brings it all to life, enveloping the audience in a vivid and lively experience from beginning to end. A shame then that this was the end of the series. While Half Life: Alyx was a great game in its own right, yet it also cleft Valve from the story they left unfinished in 2007. While it does tease a potential follow up, and possible finale, it comes at the cost of the original storyline.
The questions and tragedy left in the wake of Episode 2 have plagued the thoughts of many for nearly two decades. Some have made their own attempt to conclude the story. Others are bitter. Many have let go and moved on. Yet at some point, all were completely captivated. This series will remain legendary, and should it ever return to the masses, I have no doubt it will cause a stir.
A great game, but not the best possible way to put one of gaming's greatest storylines on hiatus for 13 years. Despite this the gameplay and story are still amazing.
So, after playing, reviewing, appreciating and loving the first Half Life and its expansions, the logical next step was to play the sequel, so... I did.. again.. for the second time. First time I played was in 2008
This is the better of the two episodes and highly recommended. However the whole half life series is excellent, possibly the best puzzle shooter ever made. This includes the original half life. If you haven't played this, I envy you as you get to experience it for the first time. I highly recommend playing it from the beginning and going through the games in sequence. Don't think because these games are old that you won't enjoy them. Trust me you will.
Better then games today I was pissed off at times but fun to play. Why is it unlisted?
This game makes it obvious why Half Life 2 it is considered one of the greatest games of all time, this mini sequel is action packed. It was released 17 years ago but it did not feel outdated, on the contrary I found myself sometimes admiring the gorgeous graphics of this 2007 game. The game has awesome auto save function, there was no crash or freeze, the difficulty is well balanced.
yes yes get the game its good its so so good
Half-Life 2: Episode Two
Author: Source Guy
Disclaimer: I have low game time because i played this game on my hacked account that i never got back :(
After the anniversary update of half life 2, the episodes (as well as lost coast) were unlisted from the steam store and merged with Half Life 2. THE GAMES ARE NOT DELETED, you can still have them in your library, but instead of the games section, its in the tools section, it really bothers me because its pretty misleading because:
- The games are not tools, THEY'RE GAMES![/*]
[*] The games can be hard to find in your library at first, if you dont look at reviews[/*]

The Episode itself was really cool, and i reccomend it to every Half-Life fan out there
WHEN HALF LIFE 3????
100% it long before the merge!
also, You can still play this, Lost Coast and Episode One if you launch it through Your Desktop!
I hate the gnome quest but overall an amazing experience that never got it's ending
this is just a rant, no one's gonna see it
this game blows to 100%
one of the hunters at the end of episode 2 crashes the game when you kill it
Valve has just added Episode One and Episode Two to Half Life 2's game and removed these as a separate purchase (Except if you get Orange Box).
🫡 ALSO RIP EPISODE 3 🫡
another great continuation to Half life 2 with only some goofy annoyin glitches and game difficulties
On one particular level, there's an npc model on the ground that is half on one floor, and the other half is no-clipped thru to the floor below. It's a visual mess that's survived all these years. I hope it gets fixed for the anniversary update.
If you own Half-Life 2: Episode 1 or 2 separately, then you can still find them under the tools section of your library!
I couldnt even finish the game because of alyx being a little b and standing up in the gawd damn car and then when i leave and come back she despawns like brudda PLEASEE LET ME FINISH THE GAME ITS SO GOOODDDD
As of November 15th, 2024, In celebration of the 20th anniversary of Half-Life 2, Episode 1 and 2 have been delisted and are now included with Half-Life 2. Half-Life 2 is free to keep until the 18th.
So em they remove episode 1 &2 from store and combine it into half life 2...
Finally now i am not need to took long time to install half life seperatedly
the ending has genuinely fucked with me ever since I played the orange box on my xbox 360, combat section are beautifully made and everything about it is amazing, also idk why but I had a weird bug for all valve games where I just didnt get acheivements for a bit, its fixed now but still masterpeice of a game that stays with you and makes you carry the weight of the ending and of the overall story.
It is very fun to play I very much recomend.
so i played through this and had a pretty solid time! going through and kicking ass as a silent scientist with a crowbar. and personally its a pretty solid sequel...But what the FUCK is the ending my guy!? i can see why people want half life 3 so bad like you cant just end it off on THAT then dip and not touch half life for 17 years
Gabe when i catch you its gonna be TRAGIC.
never made a review but since in 5 days it's gonna be the 20th anniversary of half life 2 might as well just thumbs up and go back to playing
The last battle was really frustrating, but I liked it overall. They're a lot more stingy with ammo in some sections compared to the base game, so you really can't go crazy with weapons all the time.
R.I.P. Tony Todd (1954 - 2024). Your voice acting and dedication will not be forgotten. We will miss you!
having played all of the half-life games i can say without a doubt that this one is probably the best half-life game of all, its soo good in fact that besides its relatively shorter campaign you cant even tell that this game was supposed to be an expansion to half-life 2 when it was released or as the kids say today dlc.
An Absolute MUST!!!!
The story continues... From episode one. This game has been played so many times by me when growing up this is something of a pinacle of gaming I believe and feel a bit offended when someone does not know what these gaming series are. This is just absolute blast playing. This is about a story of Gorden Freeman and he is on the brink of destruction that he worked for a company called Black Mesa and it is your job to stop the turmoil that is happening around him in a experiment that went wrong facing numerous amount of enemies along the way with the help of your friends Alex Vance and many other along the way. These games were made ahead of their time during the release of it and still surprise me when I do replay them again. This is something of a master piece in it self. This is most definitely replayable. Just for the fact that this has been out for so long I would strongly recommend on a bundle sale that I have seen for these games before.
Awesome game with new enemy types and wide open levels to explore, albeit with a painful ending, wish I could experience it for the first time again; get it if you somehow haven't already - it's worth every cent!
it fucking sucks it wont let me fucking play under the radar chapter 5 i cant even make it out the fucking garage
Absolute great game!! wonderful game play, such a unique game very good and challengeing. Great desgin and amazing graphics! a must play!!
just as good as the rest of course however has the most sad clifhanger and you guys still havent made hl2 ep3 or lets say hl3 however i still do love this and i really do hope this gets continued in the future
Game Review: Half-Life 2: Episode 2
Score: 1/10 - Liberal Themes Masked in Sci-Fi Garb
Half-Life 2: Episode 2 may be hailed as a groundbreaking first-person shooter, but behind the cinematic storytelling and tight gameplay lies an unabashed display of political messaging. Sure, the game presents itself as a gritty sci-fi epic, but scratch the surface, and you’ll find yourself knee-deep in ideologies it can’t help but hammer home.
The anti-establishment tone? Not exactly subtle. The game's constant rebellion against the Combine—a dystopian government—is practically a blueprint for liberal resistance fantasies. Gordon Freeman, a “scientist” hero wielding a crowbar, leads a revolution against a monolithic authority that spies, restricts freedom, and suppresses free will. Sound familiar? It’s as though the game’s writers were on a mission to convince players that “science” and rebellion are all you need to take down the “big bad authority.” If I was playing the game blindfolded - I would guess this game is about sending United States troops to fight overseas wars that are unrelated to us.
And let’s not forget Alyx Vance, Freeman’s hyper-capable ally. A female character who’s witty, brave, and unfazed in the face of danger? A clear attempt to check the “strong female character” box—another overt nod to progressive representation. She’s basically the game’s face for equality, independence, and defying stereotypes, often delivering biting commentary that could have come straight from a social justice handbook.
As for the environment, it’s practically a liberal environmental message in disguise. The alien-controlled wasteland shows Earth in shambles, drained of resources by powerful rulers who ignore sustainability—almost like a commentary on climate change and corporate greed. A little heavy-handed, perhaps?
And the player base? Don’t expect much relief there. In any multiplayer forums or communities, good luck sharing a dissenting opinion without being swarmed. It seems that every fan of the series has bought into the “overthrow the system” narrative, ready to lecture you on why Freeman’s brand of rebellion is the right way to save humanity.
I found myself banned from literally over 173 chatrooms for wanting to discuss why Gordan Freeman is such a liberal.
Half-Life 2: Episode 2 may have some revolutionary tech and gameplay, but if you’re not looking for political messaging around every corner, this one is hard to recommend.
My stance on this one is the same as it is with the others, It's good, it's worth getting.
Playability / Enjoyability 9/10
Graphics / Sound 7/10
Wokeness / ESG Score 0/10
Story / Writing 9/10
Replayability 3/10
This is my favourite Half Life 2 game. Unlike Episode 1, this actually moves the story forward, has excellent new enemy types to battle, well rounded NPCs, top notch voice acting, a great story and an end battle that is pure adrenaline fuelled. Alyx continues to be a useful and helpful companion that you want along for the ride, and the game has more action than puzzles, which I preferred. Only downer is that it ends on a cliff hanger and Valve decided not to make Episode 3.
youll win the strider raid eventually, it took me one game to panic and shit my pants when one strider get near the silo rocket
this is so fun but to all the new players just know that you will never have full health
A bit better than episode one still not as good as the base game. Leaves us on quite a note. Runs great on deck.
Finally played episodes 1 & 2 after the original 2nd HL. Fun expansions. Great lore.
Soon on the 20th anniversary of Half Life 2; Will a new sequel be made?
Lord Gaben , I left the comment section open for you to answer
this game is fun and the second best in the half life trilogy but you will experience immense pain if you try to do the gnome achievement and also will hate the hunter helicopters for the rest of your life:D
Like its counterparts before it (Half Life, Half Life 2 and Half Life 2 Episode One) this episode of Half Life 2 is just awesome. It is filled with great moments, great story and characters/npcs. The amounts of times I find myself replaying these games is beyond count. The soundtrack goes so hard as usual, from the creepy eerie sounds to the great action tracks that go so well with everything else that makes Half Life 2 so amazing. 10/10 ofc
I say this is an improvement over episode 1 even if the length is only 1 extra hour. It's nice to explore some new locations instead of the same old City 17. I feel like the half-Life 2 episodes would have benefited more as being their own game. But still I can't wait for episode 3 to come out.
...wait what do you mean this came out in 2007?
I played through all of the half life games to understand what I was missing out on, and what the big deal was on wanting a half life 3...I wish i let myself stay in the dark TBH, instead I have this void now that needs to be filled just like the rest of you miserable lot.
(good games though, cant believe they're almost 20 years old)
It starts with one thing
I don't know why
It doesn't even matter how hard you try
Keep that in mind
I designed this rhyme
To explain in due time
All I know
Time is a valuable thing
Watch it fly by as the pendulum swings
Watch it count down to the end of the day
The clock ticks life away
It's so unreal
Didn't look out below
Watch the time go right out the window
Trying to hold on, didn't even know
I wasted it all just to watch you go
I kept everything inside
And even though I tried, it all fell apart
What it meant to me
Will eventually be a memory of a time when
I tried so hard
And got so far
But in the end
It doesn't even matter
I had to fall
To lose it all
But in the end
It doesn't even matter
One thing, I don't know why
It doesn't even matter how hard you try
Keep that in mind
I designed this rhyme
To remind myself how
I tried so hard
In spite of the way you were mocking me
Acting like I was part of your property
Remembering all the times you fought with me
I'm surprised it got so
Things aren't the way they were before
You wouldn't even recognize me anymore
Not that you knew me back then
But it all comes back to me in the end
You kept everything inside
And even though I tried, it all fell apart
What it meant to me will eventually be a memory of a time when
I tried so hard
And got so far
But in the end
It doesn't even matter
I had to fall
To lose it all
But in the end
It doesn't even matter
I've put my trust in you
Pushed as far as I can go
For all this
There's only one thing you should know
I've put my trust in you
Pushed as far as I can go
For all this
There's only one thing you should know
I tried so hard
And got so far
But in the end
It doesn't even matter
I had to fall
To lose it all
But in the end
It doesn't even matter
After playing through the game on Hard, whilst simultaniously getting the little rocket man achievement,
All I can say is that the game is fun, I was too focussed on keeping that damn gnome in my car.
Besides trying to carry the gnome through the whole game and the most diabolical cliff hanger in history, I'd say valve did excellent with this one. But seriously, they need to add like a gnome storage basket on that car, I spent way too much time picking up that gnome off the road when it fell out for the hundredth time.
Really nothing I can state here except to play it if you can. Again, as with my reviews for HL2 and Episode One, definitely recommend!
