Thanks for the price drop to 99 cents. I've had this on my wishlist for at least 5 years. It's basically rag doll physics (without the doll) driving with 4 really cool maps and car customization. Your mission is to deliver tacos, but the main fun is flying as far and as high as you can.
A neat little game. Totally worth the 5 spot.
Ow, you guys hit me right in the nostalgia... It's like a bunch of different games I played in my formative years all got together for a psychedelic orgy and this is the resultant two-headed crack-baby. (I mean this in a good way, if you'll believe that...)
Out of the gate, there was a weird issue with the screen fading to black, which I fixed fairly easily by changing the game's resolution to my monitor's native one (1920x1080). Once that minor struggle was out of the way, I went on to have a great time playing.
On the surface, it looks like a simple game--and I do only have 3.5 hours of playtime into it at the time of this writing, with all achievements unlocked. However, when I ponder it further, it seems like the bulk of the thought has gone into designing the environment, rather than coming up with an arbitrary storyline, and progression is left open. This allows you to do lots of creative shit. A couple of my favourites:
- Using "boost" midair to achieve a "rocket thruster" effect
- Driving up the sides of buildings
My intuition tells me that my lack of imagination is the current limit here, and this is merely the tip of the iceberg. It also tells me that I'll probably be coming back to this game from time to time, just to watch airborne economy cars flail about randomly.
So yeah, long-winded way of saying: well done, Cherry Pie Games! I hope you make more games in the future!
Tacopocalypse is the love child of Crazy Taxi and Jet Set Radio, and no doubt cousins with Rocket League and Tony Hawks Pro Skater.
I am really torn on whether to recommend this game.
The game is no doubt fun for however long you choose to play it, but there are really some glaring flaws that make recommending the game just too hard to do, even with the game coming in at under £4 when at full price.
Namely, the game is full of bugs. Whilst playing with an Xbox 1 controller, I found the game would crash a hell of a lot. I have not tested with any other controllers, so this could be an controller specific issue, or generally a controller issue, as it is something that did not occur when playing with keyboard and mouse.
Another issue is the shallowness of the game. With only a couple of modes and just 4 maps to choose from, the game will not last very long, and again, I would expect at lease double the playtime for the money being asked.
There are also some issues with falling through the map at times, which don't neccesarily breakk the game, but can just be a bit annoying.
It's because of these issues, I cannot recommend, but if you can put up with this things, then underneath all that grime is certainly a fun and quick throwaway game that will certainly put a smile on your face if you ever loved any of it's predecessors.
Best for: Stuntmen
Super fun! Like everyone says, its like budget Rocket League mixed with Jet Set Radio, making it an absolutely rad, chill game.
Fun game, im a fan of all the ideas it borrows from. Ive encountered a glitch in the first 5 minutes that made my sceen go black. I thought nothing of it and just restarted. When it came back on, It was like someone had punched my monitor. The colors keep twitching on the screen and im afraid im gonna have a seizure or some shit. will delete this review after i get some help and give this game the praise it deserves
Short and fun arcadey car game that has cars that handle similar to Rocket League and a trick system of THPS. Gameplay is pretty straight forward, run into taco delivery points, refill on tacos, and do cool tricks while doing all of that.
The best way to sum it up is that it feels like an unreleased Dreamcast game. Even at a full $5 I would say the game is worth it especially if you can get some friends to play split screen with.
Fun as all hell crazy taxi meets THPS bit on the janky side but for that price you can't go wrong.
Tony Hawk + Crazy Taxi. Fantastic combination and a fantastic soundtrack. I'm not a huge fan of the music on their own but when they're put alongside the super ambitious artwork of this game it blends so nicely. I've beaten all the maps probably 10 times over each, would love more or at least a workshop functionality.
Tacopacolypse is a fun skating/delivery game reminiscent of Tony Hawk, Jet Set Radio, and Crazy Taxi. The main goal in the game is to pull off cool tricks as you race to deliver as many tacos as possible within the three minute time limit. The levels are well designed, and reward exploration with unlockable soundtracks and car customization options. The trick system is simple, you get points for spinning your car in different ways and grinding, but it's still pretty fun to pull off tricks as you fly through the levels. There are only four levels in the game right now, but they're all fun and they each have their own unique stage hazards. For example, one of them has periodic tidal waves that send you flying if you hit them. Another one has tornadoes that throw you into the air. Overall, this is probably the best skating game to come out since Skate 3. It has really tight, responsive controls, a great soundtrack, and really fun movement.
In short I recommend this game but only because the price is so reasonable. It is a quirky Tony Hawk Pro Skater wanna be game. But that’s why I find it so enjoyable. It manages to imitate it in a charming and delightful way that I just enjoy the hell out of.
First off do not play this game with mouse and keyboard. You will not enjoy yourself I promise you. While it does have its flaws the game shines when you are playing split screen with your friends. Definitely a party game at its heart and you won’t be playing it for an extended amount of time but you will enjoy it for the time you are playing it.
Like I said in the beginning this game does emulate THPS a lot and it does an excellent job in doing so. Basically it’s the apocalypse but people still need their taco’s so you need to deliver them. Not supposed to make sense so stop worrying about it. So the 2 modes are to deliver tacos or play a strange form of tag that will make you stab your best friend. It’s all good fun.
The game does have a problem of keeping prolonged interest as I have the attention span of a squirrel on cocaine. So you might play it for thirty minutes at a time every now and again. Also it has a problem with its version of tag where the person who grabs the shiny taco first proceeds to cheese the game and avoid you for the entire match if you decided to play it in the burbs. But all in all it’s a great little game that deserves more attention. And for the asking price of almost nothing compared to bigger game’s I would say it is worth the buy.

Really fun combination between Tony Hawk and Crazy taxi.
Tacopocalypse: Light on Content, but Lots of Fun
Arcade-style racing games seem to be making a comeback if the 2017 release calendar is any indication. Between Drift Stage, Power Drive 2000, Racing Apex, Distance, and more on the horizon, there's a lot to look forward to racing game wise, and that's not even mentioning any of the more simulation oriented racers. Here we are in March 2017, and the first of these retro driving games has finally been released from Early Access: Tacopocalypse.
Here's how Tacopocalypse works: Imagine a cel-shaded remix of Crazy Taxi with some ramps and grind rails all over the place like a classic Tony Hawk's Pro Skater map. Instead of delivering passengers to their destinations, the objective is to deliver tacos to people's stomachs (figuratively, I guess?) while the world is (literally) falling apart. Sounds like fun? Fortunately, it's quite a lot of fun, albeit a little light.
There are 3 different maps in the game (one of the maps has 2 layouts, making the total number of levels 4) and 3 different vehicles, each with their own handling properties. One carries more tacos but is more clunky to drive, while the faster & lighter car can carry less tacos, and the third is the balanced of the bunch. Each level in the main Delivery Mode starts with 3 minutes on the clock, the goal being to score as much money as possible.
Each time a taco is delivered, payment is received, like in Crazy Taxi, which can be used to buy customizations items in the shop between games. If enough tricks are performed on the way, the style multiplier will increase and each taco will give more money, like Tony Hawk's Pro Skater with its combo system, but only in appearance as the execution here is a bit different. Constant tricks are not required to keep the combo up; here, the current style score (the high score for that round) is what dictates the style multiplier. All this happens while some actually decent indie music plays in the background. The credits list 15 songs which isn't a bad number, but hopefully more will be added along with cars & maps in the future. Update 1.02 EDIT: That was fast. One week after launch, there's an update that adds music collectibles for the 2 newer maps, bringing the song total from the launch number of 13 to 15. Hopefully, this is the first of many post-launch updates.
Considering how unique this merging of concepts is (and for the most part the execution is really solid), Tacopocalypse stands on its own as something pretty special. Unfortunately, the limited number of maps does limit the replay value a bit and there are some odd bugs and glitches here and there (getting stuck on a black screen, the music glitches out sometimes) but none of these problems are issues that couldn't be rectified with a patch or two.
Recommendation: This is a very original arcade driving game with fun driving, fun tricks & refreshing level design. If any of the above interests you, get it. Hopefully, the developer's plans to add more content post-launch get realized because this recommendation only gets stronger as more maps, cars & music get added.
So much Dreamcast era nostalgia packed into this lovingly crafted little indie gem. The developers seem very active, whether on the Steam forums or Kickstarter. You can run this thing on a potato, I easily ran it maxed out above 1080p and still had a rock solid 60 fps. First Unreal 4 Engine title that I've been able to do that with, lol. The celshading is simple, but highly effective. Love the Jet Set Radio visuals. The absurdity of a taco truck somersaulting through the air, doing ollies and grinding on rails while the world is engulfed in the fiery blaze of Armageddon . . . . not gonna lie I lost it a few times.
My only gripe is how much weight I'm going to gain playing this game. Everytime I boot it up now I want to take a trip to either Capital Tacos or Tijuana Flats lol!
This game is a blast! Like its been said before, its very much like Jet Set Radio and Crazy Taxi and maybe a little bit of Rocket League. Its got that Cel shaded look kind of like Jet Set Radio. Its got a killer soundtrack like Crazy Taxi. And its pretty much controls exactly like Rocket League. I played a little on my own and thats fine but its a blast with some friends. Im one of those weird believers in local split screen games and this one has it! Its a fun party game. I very much recommend the game to anyone who is looking for something different with a real arcade feel to it.
It looks dope though. I've got Steam on Mac (which it works for Mac). The game will start up, but every time I choose practice mode or customization, the game crashes and sends me to the desktop. I know that it's a new game, but I would love to play this game if only I knew the issue.
I have to say this is one of the all time great being overshadowed by Triple AAA dissapointed. This gave me more fun than Tom Clancy the Division and COD BOP 3 combined. The developer influence from Rocket League, Tony Hawk and Jet Star Radio has allowed the game to become a combination of the three and flourish as it own game. So far all review so far have been extremely good and this is no difference. This game is true fun which is all you want from one, you can play with friend, high replayablilty, great soundtrack and more. Nothing to prove. Game of the Year Award. Viva Del Tacopocalyse.
At this state I can say so far the game looks very solid and great, the only thing I can complain about is controls - I really wish you could spread steering and rotating. Other than that - colorful and amazing graphics, great music and very nice style.
Tacopocalypse is a mechanical blast from the past featuring tricks and scoring fromTony Hawks, the delivery aspect of Crazy Taxi, and the car mechanics of Rocket League... but let's not forget that incredible soundtrack.
Playing this early build hints that this title has SO MUCH potential to be great with the right love. Maybe future releases could feature objectives like the old THPS? Maybe we could see an online mode? I could go on with how giddy this throwback is getting me.
Pros
- Tacos
- Money for sweet item for your car such as the unicone. Yup.
Cons
- People suck at driving in these cities
Might want to wait until more content gets released but if you want a casual tony hawk-esque game then be their guest.
