Stronghold HD is an absolute gem, even in 2025. The pixel-art is gorgeous, bringing medieval life to the screen with incredible charm. The mechanics are deep yet intuitive, making every decision feel meaningful, whether you're managing your economy or defending your castle. The atmosphere is unmatched—the music, sound design, and overall flair create an immersive experience that pulls you in completely. Every session feels like stepping into a living, breathing medieval world. This game has aged beautifully, proving that true classics never fade. A must-play masterpiece. 10/10!

Had so much fun with this game On my first Pentium 4 PC. Childhood nostalgia hits as hard and a lot of fun to this day. Still holds up after all these years.
Timeless masterpiece!

It's not complicated, I don't understand how the reviews can be extremely positive.

It says it was in high definition (HD), but it absolutely doesn't work properly on my two 4K screens! You have to search for hours, go into the settings, and check the compatibility mode (I won't reveal the solution here because it drove me so crazy that I want others to waste as much time as I did.... And don't worry, you won't find anything on the forums!), and find another trick to make it work properly when launching it from Steam... And once you've done all that, you're so happy! You finally manage to launch the game and see what happens... And even for nostalgic people (and I am nostalgic since I'm over 50!), I don't understand how anyone can enjoy this game: first of all, when they say it's in HD, it's completely false, it's a lie: it goes up to a certain maximum resolution (2560x1600) but no higher. A lie! HD for screens that are over 10 years old! 0/20 for 4K support. Scandalous. Worse: you can't even turn off full screen! So far, we're only talking about the startup, meaning the game doesn't even have the ability to launch properly.
Once you've managed to launch it, here are the only things I remembered before quitting it forever and adding it to the list of very rare "hidden" games (I have over 2000 games, check my account, it's truly the Hall of Fame of the worst games I've ever seen, and for a game, it's an interstellar shame to end up in the hidden games category) to make sure it never appears again.

It's not in 3D. So you might think it should use few resources, but that's completely false—it uses way too many resources for what it does, which is displaying absolutely pixelated 2D, and it's not even pixel art, it's just crappy 2D where the developers took the low-resolution 2D from back in the day and barely enhanced it to claim they made the "HD" version, so they can sell a few more copies to suckers like me who think it's a good game because it got extremely positive reviews 20 years ago.

There are very few keyboard shortcuts: just two or three, which are completely useless. I can't even tell you what they are because I was so frustrated trying every key on the keyboard.

You can't speed up the game, so you're forced to wait patiently while watching pixelated, crappy animations... I even got up, went to drink a coffee, talked on the phone with a friend, and when I came back, I had finished the first level.

This game has wasted way too much of my time, including the time to write this review, but I wanted to do a good deed: I absolutely wanted to leave a comment to tell you that if you ever have €4 to spare, give it to someone in need on the street rather than buying this game.

Started playing Stronghold Crusader First before any Stronghold 1 or 2 classics.
This Definitive HD game and Stronghold Crusader seem to be almost the exact same, only one is "Medieval" rather than "Religious Crusades"
Still a great game to add to your collection either way. hours of fun

Great game, i grew up with this castle builder back in the day and it's still as goon now as it was then. Absolute 10 outa 10.

This game isn't working. It plays audio but I cannot seem to make the video work. My directplay is on and still it doesn't work..

The game of my childhood, IT IS A CLASSIC YOU SHOULD NOT PASS BY, story is awesome and funny and the medieval feel is off the charts!

Everything firefly makes is garbage. This game was good when it came out on CD. then they updated it and broke it. Not to mention i got it given to me for their crap job on Strong hold 3. Firefly is the the reason why I will never pre order a game again, This product predates the steam return option being available. It also represents everything wrong with the new standard of games that rush to release then patch and try to fix broken programming. Or in this case abandons and just rips off fans.

A legend of castel building games! Great story line. Took me about 15-20h to complete the military campaign this time. I have played it back in the early 2000's and it has not aged at all. Still has the same vibe

I played this game when i was younger, and never got the chance to bear it. But i love this game. The free build mode all the way to the different campaign types. If you are looking for a game to test your strategy skills. This is the game for you.

One of the most memorable, legendary and best medieval builder so far. Firefly Studios made childhood of most of us really sweet and awesome. I still remember that back in those times I didn't have computer myself, so in order to play this, and couple of other games I had to visit my cousin. Those golden times of CDs and paper gaming magazines. That nostalgia.

One of the best games of all time. It doesn't matter if you don't like strategy games. Try this game out and you'll like it. Especially Stronghold Crusader and Crusader Exterme.
