I wanted to come back to this in 2024 to see if ANY updates were present almost a decade ago. Turns out the game was abandoned in 2016. I don't remember buying it for very much, but it feels more like a phone game than something for the computer.
IF this game was just for the phone, it would be average. But for someone who likes survival and base building, this is too basic to be engaging.
Rogue Harvest is an abandoned early access 2D retro pixel top down JRPG looking survival/crafting/mining game with no content and no clear objective, that will never be completed and only exists on Steam as a cash grab to scam gamers into buying an incomplete and abandoned product. The idea is fine, survival/crafting games are popular, but that doesn't mean this is worth a moment of your time, it's garbage.
The game was abandoned roughly a year prior to the "launch" on Steam and hasn't been updated in almost 7 years. It blew past the developers commitment to complete the game without any notification or admission of failure from the developer. The game will never be completed.
Despite not being in Steam Early Access (where this arguably belongs), the game is missing features and is apparently incomplete. Due to the lack of meaningful progress from the developer, it's unlikely the game will be completed at all, yet the developers reprehensively have their hand out for money for an incomplete game. This is a good reason for gamers to avoid this. It's unclear why the developer set out to mislead gamers by exiting Early Access without finishing the game, but it's evidently incomplete (the title screen has a "Early Access Build" disclaimer on it!).
The developer makes the admission, almost proudly, that they failed to allocate sufficient budget, staff, and other resources to the development of this game. It's a solo project. Game development is a serious endeavour that should not be approached lightly. This is a lot like trying to drive a car using only your feet. It can be done, perhaps, but it's almost certain to end in disaster. Trying to to the job wrong, on purpose, will not result in a product that has high value for gamers, as the "developer" has done here, with a predictably disastrous outcome.
While I can't confirm this, it looks a lot like the game pixel assets and tilesets are plagiarised... there's no mention in the credits for an asset creator, so we are left to believe this solo dev did all the work creating the game assets and engine too. Huh. Plagiarism is serious business, and could even be classified as copyright infringement given the nature of the assets stolen.
From a technical perspective, the game doesn't meet basic minimum requirements that most PC gamers expect as standard.
A choice was made to use obsolete, decades old retro pixel "art" as a substitute for contemporary PC graphics. It's unclear if this is due to lack of budget or talent, regardless, the overall visual quality of the game is extremely low as a result.
There's no option to change the resolution and no useful graphics tweaks. There's no way to ensure this is running at the native resolution of your display. There's no guarantee this game will look right on any PC as a result of this hamfisted design decision.
The controls can't be customised, which will be an annoyance for many, but it can also render the game unplayable for differently-abled gamers, or gamers using AZERTY or other international keyboard layouts.
The game features no proper level design or game/story flow/plot, as they opted to try to use samey repetitive procgen algorithms as a substitute for adding such content to the game, to avoid doing the important job of level/map design. As a result, the game doesn't actually have any content worth mentioning, just endless, boring, repetitive, soulless algorithmically generated sameyness. Developers must learn that procedural generation is not an acceptable substitute for content.
These technical defects push this game below acceptable standards for any modern PC game.
The poor quality of this game is reflected by how many people spent time with it. At the time of this review, SteamDB shows the all-time peak player number was only 6 players. This is a remarkably low number, and now, the only player activity occurs once or twice a month, presumably someone loading it up to see what it is then quickly uninstalling it. Considering there's over 120 million gamers on Steam and well over 50,000 games for gamers to choose from (over 9,000 completely free titles), the overwhelming lack of interest in this low quality game is to be expected.
Unethically, the developer sold keys to this abandoned Early Access game into cheap, nasty game bundles, where they knew it would be advertised and sold as a complete PC game. This seems to have been done in an attempt to mislead gamers into buying a knowingly faulty, defective and incomplete product. When a developer does this for a game they have zero practical intention of completing, this is essentially a scam, an intention to get paid for a broken/unfinished product. Often this is done as an exit strategy, as the developer takes the money and runs. No refunds have been given, the developer kept all the money they took from gamers.
Another unethical act of this developer, knowing full well that this game is abandoned and they will never complete it, they are deliberately trying to scam gamers into buying it by offering it on discount from time to time. It's impossible to "accidentally" discount a game. The developer looked at their abandoned game, and instead of doing the right thing and removing it from Steam, they instead doubled-down and tried to scam even more people into paying for it. Greedy, and completely unethical. Doing the wrong thing, on purpose, for money. This is not okay.
Rogue Harvest is relatively cheap at $1 USD, but it's not worth it. Given the defects and quality issues with the game, coupled with the unrealistic price, and the questionable ethical nature of the developer and/or their associates (as outlined above), this is impossible to recommend. This is also competing with over 9,000 free games available on Steam, many of them far better than this paid product.
It's kind of mediocre, but still fun for a couple hours. I can't recommend it, however, because it always crashes my game when I try to load a save.
The developer left this game. I payed for it because he was on an interesting path, but they moved on.
Great little game to play. little odd here and there and it gets harder the longer you stay alive so you got to build up them walls to keep the enimy out.
What i said in my refund request:
Complete utter cashgrab, its been in early access for nearly 2 years and there is barely enough (broken) content to play 15 minutes.
Absolute trash, id pay NOT to play it.
I played 15 minutes of this game which was enough to see this game for what it was: a mix of Terraria and Stardew Valley except absolutely all the good bits have been taken out.
Add to that the fact that it doesn't load when I click "Load game", it doesn't close when I click "Close" (running in the background, cheeky cheeky!) and has no options to change the graphics except for Vsync On/Off and Full/Windowed mode...the choice is clear - avoid.
Honestly, I cannot understand how a game that is half the cost of another - better - similar version can't have at least half the content.
I dislike the controls and expected more from the game, the music randomly cuts out and I find it annoying when it doesnt. It's bland and crashes on me.
Almost impossible, but it's that almost that will keep you coming back for more punishment as you think you've finally figured it out, only to die again.
Rogue Harvest is a permadeath death-mill. It's basically an electronic version of heroin.
If you intend on playing it, then you must accept the fact you'll die repeatedly, and probably on the first night too, but you'll be back, better than before, but perhaps also cockier, and just as you're wiping out a mob of undead and goblins, you'll stumble into a fire or be hit from behind by a mushroom forcing you to start over again.
As a general review Rogue Harvest is very similar in style to Don't Starve, but a bit less polished, and the art work is not as good. On the other hand, the game is still a work in progress, and is already a great start. If you're looking for a challenge, then this is a game you'll want to try.
I don't own this game, but steam allowed me to review it, isn't that weird?
Review Update:
The game has died as it stands. I have stood by the developer for a long time believing this wouldn't be the case and I feel like a traitor for changing my review but Here is where it stands.
The old review has been left for the current released aspects of the game, editted to remove the comments about changes that were promised and never came through.
The game IS fun as it stands but it isn't complete and likely never will be.
If the game ever does resume and achieve completion (I REALLY wanna see the ending!) Then I will be HAPPY to change this but I can no longer support this game.

This game is amazing. It is a beautiful work of art
It IS a perma-death game. This will put some of you off so if that sort of thing does not suit you then this game is not for you
Now that\'s not to say it is perfect. There are some bugs still as it is early developement and as a permadeath game one small screw up can easily undo hours of hard work and it is extremely unforgiving if you don\'t pay attention to the instructions or at least glance at the guide.
Got the game full price, got the game for my wife full price, soon to get it for more family full price. Worth it to me bugs and all.
Unfinished dead game. last update was in 2017
im a console player that just jumped to pc i find keyboard and mouse very nearly impossible to game with, that said i would like to ask when if ever are u implementing controller support i bought your game and i really liked it and would like to enjoy it some more with the help of a controller.
i like it, it has great potential!
The game is going good, but what im confused about is the story that going on in the beginning and then you start in a hut ( I see a plane and then later on you hear a plane crashing?? ) I think its good just need some bug fixes and story fix
Awesome game and instant classic needs work but worth the wait.
Having played it for an hour, it just feels, bland.
Combat is bland, and most of the enemies just rush forward at you, with little in difference for their 'attacks'.
There is a lot of lag moving from screen to screen, which seemed to be the only reason why I was taking damage.
Crafting system is okay, though s rather basic compared to other games in this genre.
With the game as it is, I can't recommend it. It's not bad per sei, it just has nothing going for it that sets it above any other game in this genre.
