An evil overlord known as 'The Campaigner' seeks to shred the fabric of time and rule the universe using an ancient artifact known as 'The Chronoscepter'. The Chronoscepter was shattered thousands of years ago in an effort to keep it from falling into evil hands. The Campaigner has constructed a massive focusing array which he plans to use to magnify and pervert the power of the Chronoscepter in order to shatter the barriers between the ages and rule the universe. Turok has vowed to find the eight pieces of the Chronoscepter spread throughout the Lost Land and put an end to The Campaigner's evil plot...

good port. If the original n64 game's frame rate, fov, and view distance bothered you, this solves it all.
My favorite part is when the indian says "I am the Turok" and begins Turoking everybody.
Now for real, it is a product of its time with SEVERAL things that are outdated. Originally with no crosshair, unable to change type of ammo at will, lack of sound variety and most importantly; no intuitive secret hiding and collectaton mechanics.
If you dont keep your eyes truly open you'll have to repeat a level to pick everything needed to continue your adventure. Which directly translates to walk ALL OVER AGAIN with 0 variety and less enemies which directly translates to... well, literally walk all over again. No fun.
Despite that the game has been updated and received an improvements some weeks ago which fixes the ammo selection problem and the crosshair existence. Those are small details, but it is a way of the developers to tell us "we are aware on this stuff despite the years"
So yeah.
The greatest, and only good Turok game. The new Turok is gonna be garbage and any sequels afterwards are garbage. THIS is Turok. Turok 2 is garbage.
What a banger of a soundtrack - especially the Ancient City.
if you want a good fast paced old school shooter this is the game for you. takes me back to the N64 days.
In Turok you play as Turok and he fights dinosaur, man, T-rex and Car.
A classic when i was a kid love this game!
I'd played Turok 2 before the first game back on the Nintendo 64 and it took me until the remaster to play the original. I remember getting a few levels in before I got lost in one of the levels and eventually got caught up in another game lol but lately I decided it was finally time to get through Tal'Set's adventure, and you know what? It may not be as great as Turok 2, but it's still pretty fun.
Turok is a character with a long history, having changed hands multiple times to the point we have a new Turok game on the horizon after nearly two decades. For the original games, the premise is essentially: Turok is a mantle passed down in a lineage of Native Americans, their sacred duty being to safeguard the Lost Lands, a parallel dimension where time has no meaning and things from all across space and time have been pulled from across the universe into one, crazy mishmash. Dinosaurs, cyborgs and aliens all rub shoulders with one another and I love it. For his original outing, Turok (this particular one being Tal'Set) must stop a cyborg general named the Campaigner from gathering the pieces of a powerful weapon called the Chronoscepter that he wishes to use to punch through the barrier separating the Lost Lands from our world, allowing him to conquer the universe.
Crazy awesome setting aside, the main draw of Turok is easily it's crazy awesome arsenal. While I'd say the sequel greatly improved on all the aspects of the original, Turok: Dinosaur Hunter still has a wonderful array of weaponry, ranging from the conventional to the spectacular. Alongside a knife, your trusty Tek Bow, shotguns and an assault rifle you'll also find a Pulse Rifle, Minigun, Grenade Launcher, Rocket Launcher and even a Fusion Cannon that functions as a mini-nuke! (that Tal'Set is immune to because being Turok makes you awesome like that)
The main aspect I think a lot of people will struggle with is the levels. There are eight levels and Turok must collect several keys in one level to progress to other levels. In addition, Turok can also find the pieces of the Chronoscepter before the Campaigner and assemble it to use himself against the evil general. The problem is that the level layout can get a little confusing, not helped by the fact that mobile enemies will respawn (enemies scripted to remain stationary will stay dead) which, even with a Doom-style automap, you can lose your way pretty easily and not know how to progress. Don't be afraid to consult a guide if you have to lol
While it's called 'Dinosaur Hunter', enemy variety is pretty broad and increases as you progress each level. A good number of them are human or human variants like the 'demons' or cyborgs (who are reskinned, tougher humans essentially), but you can also get the gorilla-like Purr-lin, beetles, dragonflies, Leapers (exactly what they sound like), alien soldiers, CYBORG DINOSAURS and (much later) Big Murder Robots (TM). Respawning issue aside (which can be fixed with a mod on the workshop), the combat flow is quite fun. Turok didn't skip leg day so he runs pretty quick, allowing for some great run and gun action.
Turok: Dinosaur Hunter also benefits from a level editor and Steam Workshop support, meaning you can craft and enjoy completely new adventures in the Lost Lands (or beyond). I do wish (and hope) that Turok 2 will receive a similar feature in the future, but given this game got an update like a decade after the remaster released, I'm optimistic! The wonderful folks at Nightdive even restored cut Brachiosaurus that walk around in the background of one of the levels. Beautiful.
It may be somewhat dated, the levels can get a little confusing and Turok 2 is a huge improvement, but I would still recommend Turok: Dinosaur Hunter. It has a real 'rumble in the jungle' vibe it's successor ironically lacks, and whereas Turok 2 has themed levels with appropriate enemies for the environ, the original features a wonderful hodgepodge of enemies from across time and space all in one place and all dedicated to killing you...when they're not infighting. Yep, you can do that, just like Doom lol
one of the best 90s shooters for me, very fun... i hate that is underrated, this is a very good game, one of the best boomer shooters i ever played, i like the level design and platforming, and the gunplay is very creative too, like it feels really good and unique... i like this game, 8,5/10
What A Game! NightDive have really done something very special here with Turok!
This remaster has all the charm and feel of the heavily fogged and Anti-Aliased N64 version from way back in 1997!
But ND have made it very playable on modern PC's which is done so very well...they have even left in the original music and sounds.
You get loads of new options with the latest update and can tweek everything to suit your play-style and with the new Kex 4 engine upgrade it is buttery smooth even at 120fps no matter what set up you have!
To me this is an improvement on the N64 version and how often can you say that about any N64 game!
I have Turok 2 ready to go (which is an even better game than the first with the weapon CEREBRAL BORE) but i'm waiting for ND to sprinkle that magic update juice all over it too, before I start it. Well impressed! This is old skool gaming at its best.
shoot dinosaur then shoot dinosaur, 10/10
It's astounding how well this game holds up. It just got a big patch too, so you can disable all of the different head bob animations to make the thing playable.
TUROK 1 = excellent, 10/10, finished offline.
Outstanding job by Nigthdive Studios, one of their best, totally updated, added to, zero blinding fog, QOLs, keyboard mapping, bobbing level select, etc, etc, the works.
A remaster meant another gameplay for me, so good.
They even added a full roster of cheats in a cheat menu, do anything you want, full freedom.
Complete explaining in a Steam forum/Discussions post.
- NOTES:
- Also fantastic: Turok 2 !!
Rather unassuming simple start and graphics, but it turns into a complex, attention grabbing game, a joy to complete for me. Had to use a walkthrough to get so many specials, though, worthwhile.
- ( Turok 3 -Three-: Beware, DON'T play, terribly awful original game.
Forget the Turok character, dies in the badly made cutscene before the game begins.
Then choose your pitiful and risible hero, girl Danielle or youngster Joseph.
N64 levels of bare, empty locations.)
Wow, the new version of the game is absolutely flawless. All issues the previous build had are gone and it now runs, plays and sounds like never before. What an amazing effort, you guys! Well done.
It's good, don't think about it too much.
You're the Son of Stone, you're TUROK!
As Native American Tal'Setin an alternate dimension where dinosaurs have survived and technology from our world as well as other worlds in the universe gathers, it is up to the player to stop the Campaigner before he takes control of the universe. Contrary to the origins, the character's name is not Turok, but the title of Guardian of the Lost Land. With a bow and arrow, a knife and an arsenal of conventional as well as sci-fi and extraterrestrial weapons, it is up to you to find the Chronocepter and dissuade the campaigner from his plan. Exploration as well as skill is required in the fairly open levels, because it plays very quickly like a so-called boomer shooter. The environments look groundbreaking for the time, but you should keep in mind that the graphics at the time were ported to the new KEX engine, so you can occasionally see a few abysses that you shouldn't have seen back then. Nevertheless, the game is incredibly fun and invites you to explore with its jungle atmosphere. Recently, Nightdive added a few more dinosaurs in an update that existed in the 1996 beta but didn't make it into the final game. A must for dinosaurs and shooter fans, which doesn't have to hide behind genre greats like Quake, Duke Nukem and Doom.
muito bom
If you like Dinosaurs you'll like this
This game is awesome! I remember playing this a lot on N64 back when I was a teen, but I had to cheat to beat it. With the remaster I was able to beat it 100% without cheats. But it is always fun to have unlimited ammo and unload with your favourite weapons!
El mejor Turok de la trilogía original. Otro excelente remaster de Nightdive. La última actualización es perfecta y arregla muchas cosas del release original. De los mejores shooters de los 90s
one of the best remasters ever
great remaster
This game is kind of repetitive & boring, its one of those games that you play once and never touch it again and I hate responding enemies. If you want to play an old school boomer shooter, you're better off playing Doom or Quake.
Decently fun and fast phased, but prepare for scouring every map for all the keys to unlock the further stages. Checking the map often usually is enough to notice any 'hidden' side paths, though.
I'd recommend Turok 2 over this, it leans more into the dinosaur theme and the shooting is way more satisfying. In this one you are fighting humans too much for my liking, the enemy cast is way more fun in the second game.
I played Turok on the N64 back in the '90s and could never figure out how to get past the second level. Revisiting the remaster by Nightdive Studios almost 20 years later, I still had to follow a guide to navigate most of the puzzles and labyrinthine levels. I’m not a big fan of the level design—especially early on—but I did notice that by the final level, the game really picks up into a DOOM-like state, where fast-paced run-and-gun action takes over instead of tedious searching for hidden paths.
The sound design is fantastic. The classic ""I AM TUROK"" when earning an extra life, the distant dinosaur roars, and the tribal drums and bells all work together to create the perfect atmosphere for a dinosaur-hunting adventure. The gun designs are another highlight—I found myself using the plasma rifle and minigun whenever I had ammo. However, weapon switching was a major issue; no matter how much I tried, I could never reliably cycle to the right gun using my mouse wheel or buttons, which became frustrating in combat.
One thing that caught me off guard was the ending. Just when I thought I had reached the final boss, the game threw a curveball at me—so at least it had a strong (if wildly bizarre) conclusion to its insanely confusing space dinosaur pirate plot.
yeah its pretty good
I've loved this game since it first hit on N64. it's even better with standardized controller configurations.
its a good and fun game you should play
I AM TUROK!
Fun if you're into remastered N64 games. A lot of platforming, even more collectables, and a dash of silly dinosaur noises.
A normal day for a Native American warrior.
dinsor
I had a good childhood because I grew up with boomer shooters like this one on the N64
Still better than some stuff put out today tbh
Turok: Dinosaur Hunter is a phenomenal first person shooter. This N64 classic title still delivers. I would recommend this game to anyone who is a fan of the Doom franchise: you won't be disappointed! The original Turok trilogy has been remastered by the critically acclaimed Night Dive Studios. Hopefully, we will get Turok Evolution and Turok: Rage Wars in the future.
Turok
I AM TUROK
hawk turok and shotgun blast on that thang
meh
GOOD
+ guns have clearly defined roles, stay relevant through the game and are simply fun to shoot - I especially enjoyed the bow, the auto shotgun, the minigun and the grenade launcher
+ movement feels good (with disabled head bobbing)
+ platforming's fun (it's originally a N64 game after all)
+ a fully connected world with no loading screens
+ I liked the traps
+ a rifle magazine is called "clip"
BAD
- hard difficulty is too easy and hardcore is not suitable for the first playthrough - you need to know where to go and to move fast to not get overwhelmed by the near-constant enemy respawns - either no challenge whatsoever or a trial and error speedrun
- enemies are either hitscan or hardly a threat - a small group of basic grunts armed with assault rifles is much more dangerous than any dinosaur, combat robot or alien
- CONSTANTLY. STARVED. FOR. AMMUNITION. Largely solved by running away from low threat targets - raptors, alien gorillas, etc. - but where's the fun in that?
- some weapons are either fully outclassed by a different weapon using the same ammunition (pistol, pump-action shotgun) or completely useless (alien weapon does no damage and the other two energy weapons are also kind of crappy)
- spongy, braindead bosses that fail to put up a fight; which is a pity because the T-Rex is simply awesome
- levels take forever to complete, the final one is especially bad
- levels are often overly confusing (looking at you, level 5)
- The Catacombs (that's the fifth one)
- loss of momentum on landing (no bunny hopping)
It's still enjoyable to some degree but ultimately feels like a chore to finish. Nowhere near the top contenders of that time. Quake II is better.
The classic. One of the best FPS games of all time if you're just looking for smooth action. No massive head bob, movement is instant and responsive, and even though we all know that platforming in FPS games is mostly terrible, i have always thought this game did it well.
After almost 30 years, this game still holds up. It's still fun after playing it at least once per year since it came out. And i have always absolutely adored the weird guns - alien gun, particle accelerator, fusion cannon - the animations and sounds are just glorious.
This might not get as much love as other foundational FPS games like doom and quake - but this is a better game, in my opinion. Even if you're not an old person like me, give this a shot if you want a mostly no-nonsense FPS.
Turok (PC) Review
The 1997 classic Turok: Dinosaur Hunter makes a return on PC, offering a nostalgic trip into a prehistoric world filled with dangerous dinosaurs, merciless enemies, and intense combat. The game blends fast-paced action with exploration, taking players through lush jungles and ancient ruins as they battle everything from raptors to massive T. rex. The PC version of Turok enhances the experience with improved graphics, including higher resolutions and smoother textures, making the once-blocky visuals much more appealing.
While the controls may feel a bit dated compared to modern shooters, the game’s original charm shines through, particularly with its expansive levels and array of weapons, including the iconic bow and explosive grenades. However, the AI can sometimes be a bit repetitive, and navigating the more maze-like levels can be frustrating at times.
Overall, Turok on PC is a great choice for fans of 90s FPS nostalgia. It may not hold up as seamlessly as some modern shooters, but its thrilling combat and dinosaur-filled chaos still make for a fun, if slightly rough, adventure.
Famously an original N64 game, Turok is an early 3D console FPS that combines exploration with platforming, creating an experience greater than the sum of its parts. Early 3D games had to be finessed with all the limitations such as draw distance and a claustrophobic vertical field of view. One of the earliest Night Dive remasters on its burgeoning KEX engine, the transition to PC is well handled and translates to a genuine feeling that is an extension of the N64 classic.
I caution going in with the expectations of a modern FPS running at a high framerate as it will surely leave you disappointed and diminish what makes this game special. Turok is originally a console game after all, but don't let that deter you from enjoying what is some of the weirdest fun you can have with such a game. Passion and creativity I believe, is why this game is well loved and continues to standout as a unique franchise in the history of modern shooters.
I am 2rock.
Did not like this game on n64, but that's because I was dumb and wanted everything to be like Goldeneye.
This is a very solid game in the Doom/Quake mold and being able to play it without having to eat shit with the n64 controller is a joy.
The best way to play this great N64 game!
One of the first games i've every played as a kid on the N64. Old Classic Retro Fps. Kill Dinosaurs, Robots, and Aliens while playing a Native American; and instant classic. Go in there with low expectations and enjoy the ride. Secrets all over the place, and the boss battles are nothing serious . Chill game to turn your brain off.
excellent. better than most stuff nowadays
I played this because of N64 nostalgia. But how does it hold up today?
First, playing this on PC is delightfully smooth. Turok moves super fast, and while this isn't a crazy movement shooter or anything like that, it's still a nice fluid experience. There is also definitely a retro charm to it, with weird fantasy weapons and the usual stuff like health pickups and lots of secret rooms. The N64 soundtrack also fits this game perfectly.
There are however also some less fun aspects about it. For some reason this game has a lot of tedious first-person platforming, which is very much not enjoyable. It also has some rather ill-conceived mechanics that do nothing for the game except to punish the player. You have a limited amount of lives, if they run out your game is completely over. This isn't that big of a deal since you can just load a save, but I really don't get why this needed a lives system in the first place. Similarly, you can only carry a limited amount of ammo, unless you collect a backpack item - which you lose upon death, and there are only a couple per level.
The overall presentation of this game is also not great, even for its time. There are very few graphical assets, so every jungle area looks the same after a while. Goldeneye, which came out around the same time, did that much better.
So, should you play this - for reasons other than nostalgia? I guess if you wanna dive into 90's FPS and have already played the classics, then this isn't too bad of a pick.
Fun to play through a childhood favorite again!
If you have played it on the N64 then its pretty much the same game and I would recommend it. If you haven't played it then I suggest you watch someone play it first. There are very limited save points (the jumping and they dying gets old really fast), some of the keys are really hard to find and level design is frustrating. On the plus side, cheat codes can be found on the internet really easily though you do miss out on achievements.
