LEGO® MARVEL's Avengers

Okay, so after playing almost 50 hours of Lego Marvel Super Heroes, this game is so lacking in comparison. Here are the issues I have:

- The fighting mechanics are trash. It's just not as fluid as the first game and feels like so much more of a struggle to take down enemy characters. Don't even get me started on the 'K' command that pops up on every single character that takes such a long time to complete just for a final shot or whatever. It's annoying.
- As with the first game, they really don't tell you how to do a lot of things. How am I supposed to get to the open world section, as I am currently stuck in story mode? In the sections with the map, how am I supposed to open it and choose my destination? It's just not intuitive at all.
- Wow. They really just copped out on the voice acting entirely to just steal the soundtrack from the movies. Pretty lame, to be honest. Especially when you couldn't even be bothered to get certain people to voice their characters for the game but needed to have more dialogue for some reason (Bucky is the glaring example, guess they couldn't pay Sebastian Stan enough to get him to do this).

I'll probably have more to say as I get more into it, but I am just not really liking how this game is set up. I'm hoping that Lego Marvel Super Heroes 2 is much better than this one.

A bit of history. I purchased and played the Lego Star Wars Original Trilogy game for the Gamecube many years ago. This purchase was made because I was a Star Wars fan, and the Gamecube was sorely lacking in games back then. Regardless, I actually liked it, which was a surprise, as it wasn't the type of game that I generally played. Many years later, I saw the release of Lego Star Wars Skywalker Saga, and thought, perhaps, I should give it a shot. Being hesitant, I decided to get into Lego games slowly, by only purchasing them when on sale. It started with the Lego Batman Trilogy, which surprisingly, I liked (to various degrees, with the first one being my favorite). This was later followed up with Lego City Undercover, and Lego Star Wars Complete Saga. During the Steam Autumn Sale of 2024, I bought this game (Lego Avengers) as part of a collection (with almost all of the DLCs). So, what do I think of it?

I noticed that most of Lego games (played so far) seems to follow two patterns. Some games only uses the license and provides an experience with puzzles (with a unique story). Other games uses a license along with a specific story, and heavily rely on the story. There are less puzzles, instead it connects different scenes from the movie/story/etc. It also assumes that the player has already encountered the story, as it is concerned with providing the important sequences. Not sure which pattern is better -- one seems more like a complete game, while the other seems more immersive/nostalgic. This game falls under the second pattern, providing different scenes from various Marvel movies.

The story. Well, for the most part, it's the first and second Avengers movies, with scenes from other Marvel movies included. This works very well, but only if the player has seen the Marvel movies, as the story is a bit complex (due to how Marvel tied the movies together over many years). It starts with the iconic battle from the beginning of Avengers Age of Ultron (with little setup for the gamer), which after completion, it jumps back to the beginning of the first Avengers movie. Also, while working through the Avengers movies, other Marvel movie sequences become available. Eventually, after completing the first Avengers Movie, it will continue to after the iconic battle (at the beginning of the game). Overall, it does it very well. The story is amazing, as it is just the stories from the Avengers movies -- with the game's goal leaning more to generating nostalgia, than to retelling the stories in detail.

The progression seems very similar, and somewhat different from other Lego games. It is also more confusing than other Lego games played so far. You are working through the first two Avengers movies, with flashbacks to other Marvel movies. My issue with it, is that it is too linear. With other Lego games, the player has more flexibility in finishing the chapters/levels. Also, as like other Lego games, after finishing a chapter, you can replay the chapter (either with story again, or in free play). It does tell you that free play is available (after finishing a chapter), but it doesn't tell you how to do it. A simple popup would have helped here.

To replay a chapter or with free play, you need to exit the level (but not the game). This will place you with a world map (globe). From here, you can choose the chapter to replay. Also, some chapters open during the main mission, but is not required to be played. These chapters can also be accessed here. And lastly, there is a "Manhattan" (and other) levels -- these seems to be open world levels with lots of tasks to earn rewards. These are definitely cool additions to the game. Unfortunately, there are some annoyances. First, the chapters are just simply named. It can be difficult to determine which chapter is which (having a number order would have been helpful). This is especially needed to get back to the main mission. Second, all checkpoints are lost when changing chapters. This is generally not an issue, however, for the main mission, it is annoying -- as it means you have to play parts of the chapter again, when you just want to continue where you left off.

Replaying a story and achievements. If you are the type that don't like to replay story chapters (as it doesn't open anything new), but love to have achievements for completing them, there seems to be a bug/issue related to this. For some reason, sometimes story achievements do not trigger when finishing a story chapter -- and it was very common for me, as it happened for quite a few of the chapters completed. This means that you may need to replay the chapter (as story), just to obtain the achievement. Interestingly, it looks like this bug have been around for quite some time, as the achievements stats (of the player base) show some of the earlier chapters having lower completion rates than the later chapters (which is not possible).

Complexity of characters/controls. I feel like I should mention this. There are a lots of characters, which have many different powers (and controlled setups). Some powers are situational -- meaning depends on what is happening or where the character is. Some powers depend on two characters. Etc. You can be playing a level, and get completely stuck, because you didn't know that you have to stand at a certain location, with a certain character, at a certain time. I understand that it is a puzzle, but it is incredibly frustrating when it is situational, and something was just off when you tried something (so, you didn't know that you had the correct solution).

As with the previous Lego games that I played, I find the loading/saving to be a bit irksome. Basically, you get to choose a save slot, that the game uses during the playthrough (at specific points). You have to manually save, but you can't choose where to save, or which save slot to use. This game also has an autosave option, but it seems to mainly apply to the open world (hub) areas, and strangely, with a handful of the checkpoints. Not sure why it is inconsistent.

Cloud support. Steam reports that steam cloud is not supported with this game. I am not sure if this is still true, or is outdated, but regardless... don't forget to save a copy of the game save files -- especially if you are going to uninstall the game.

Stability. The game did crash a few times for me, and it meant that I had to restart, and then, replay some parts. One time, it was quite some time since the last checkpoint. Overall, it wasn't the worst of the Lego games (or even too annoying). Lego Batman 3 still holds the title for most annoying, not only for the crashes, but for the cases where chapters could not be finished -- forcing an exit to replay the whole chapter.

Overall, I definitely liked this game, and will recommend it (especially, if you are a fan of the Marvel movies). It's not the best game in the overall Lego series of games. However, it is better than average, which is great for the Lego franchise. If you have nostalgia for the Marvel movies, then this game will definitely scratch that itch. It was very fun to play, and contains quite a bit of endgame content (no pun intended). For me, it was definitely worth it, as I bought it with most of the DLCs, as part of a bundle, and at a great discount.

The Game has a lot of amazing levels based on The First Avengers Movie to Avengers: Age Of Ultron and I do hope a New Lego Marvel will happen soon like a Lego Marvel Superheroes 3 or a New Lego Marvel's Avengers game based on Avengers: Infinity War to Avengers: Secret Wars in the next few years.

Out of the LEGO games I played, I think this is one of the weakest main story campaigns. Sure the Hulk and Black Widow stuff was cute but the only joke that worked was the weaponised pig. I didn't get that milkshake running gag at all. I think it might be cause the MCU is adapting comic books with no limits into Live Action which has limits back to a cartoon with no limits. I may be wrong but I feel like that's where the issue lies.

Unless you're very nostalgic for this type of game or this movie it's a very average Lego game.
Suffers from incredibly outdated menu design, camera movements and controls.
For example the mouse has no use at all, you navigate the menus using the arrow keys. You can't even map key functions to the mouse.

I used to play these games a lot back in the day but coming back to them now (without the hardcore perception filter that nostalgia is to some people) the honest truth is that these games are very average in quality.

Although i bout the wrong lego marvel game, it is fun to play. Though i dislike how in order to play free roam you have to complete the story. And the free roam feels way smaller than Lego Marvels super heroes, the superior lego marvel game.

Lego Marvel’s Avengers is definitely not bad, especially for someone like me who loves Marvel. The game does a great job of bringing together iconic Marvel characters and combining them with the classic, fun Lego humor. It’s got everything you’d expect from a Lego game: exploration, puzzles, combat, and tons of collectibles—but it also manages to capture the spirit of the Marvel universe really well.

The best part is the roster of characters. You get to play as so many of your favorite Marvel heroes, from Iron Man to Captain America to the Hulk, and they each have unique abilities that add to the gameplay. The levels are based on the Avengers films, so you get to experience some of the most iconic moments from the movies, all while enjoying the quirky Lego twist on them. It’s fun, fast-paced, and perfect for Marvel fans who want to immerse themselves in a more lighthearted, action-packed adventure.

While it might not be the most groundbreaking Lego game ever, it’s definitely enjoyable for anyone who loves Marvel and Lego. It has its flaws but after 100%-ing the game, it's still incredible - although things like the original wasp character token, that one gold brick in bartons farm and the black panther skycycle achievent were hell (You will need tutorials). Anywho, its pretty cool innit

This game feels like a low effort cashgrab on the movie, lots of boring filler, the movie's dialogue sounds off.

Along with Lego Marvel Superheroes 1, this is a very fun game that allows you to play through the events of The Avengers 1 and 2 and the movies in between. With new overworld locations, expanded mechanics, and epic battles.

Yes, It would've been awesome to play through Guardians of the Galaxy, Iron Man 1 and 2, Thor 1, and Incredible Hulk too. And I would've loved to have the early Spiderman, Fantastic Four, X-Men, Daredevil, Ghost Rider, Blade, and Silver Surfer.
Actually, I would've loved to combine this whole roster with the roster of the first Lego Marvel Superheroes game, and levels from the older, Pre-MCU movies, and add an Invincibility upgrade to make stud-farming quicker and easier.

Those would make this game optimal in my eyes, but even without them, this game is still a high recommend from me.
And considering my not so favorable views on Ant-Man or the MCU movies since then (with the exceptions of Black Panther 1 and Doctor Strange 1, those two movies were actually alright.) My recommendation for this game, (much like Lego Marvel Superheroes 1, before this) can not be understated.

I have played 51.8 hrs and completed 97.3% but I am finally too bored to continue to find all the leftovers. There is a lot of repetition in this game, and there were also puzzles that I wouldn't have worked out without watching walkthroughs.
Most of this was played on the steam deck and it was great.

By Far, One of the BEST LEGO Games by Tt Games.

While "LEGO Marvel 1" may indeed have the Fantastic 4 & X-Men Characters, this game is still to this day one of the best "Avengers" Games we have ever seen from any Developers. This one out of the 3 LEGO Marvel Titles contains the most fun & best playable versions of, The Hulk, Iron Man, Quicksilver (& any other Speedsters included).

9/10 ~ 5 Stars!
