I love the idea of using the little figurines. And the neat slow-down mechanic gives you time to complete a series of moves while keeping on the pressure to act w.o. overthinking everything. It's cool to shop new weapons and gear, and that it's rarely the same items that are in the shop two visits in a row. You can build you war band's members to have specific roles in combat, like a tank and a damage heavy figurine, ranged, etc.

There are some small caveats, like for some of the starting chars the initial personal ability cards are better than the ones you unlock with level-up (imo), but all in all a surprisingly addictive game.

Lovely visual style, but suffers irreparably from clunky controls and the unfortunate decision to have only a real-time/cooldown mode with shallow tactical involvement which I couldn't really get into. Would likely be much better as a turn based tactical game. Oh well.

I like the concept but who designed this learning curve?!
Mission 1 - get to the boat. Okay that is pretty easy. This is the tutorial.
Mission 2 - fight an endless flow of enemies that spawn from 6 different locations on the map. Destroy their boats to stop the enemies from spawning in while ALSO killing a boss AND do all of this with only 2 fighters?!

This turns the game from "take your time, figure it out" to "you are completely overrun" in a single mission.
If you are a beginner and still taking your time like I was, you can end up fighting 8 or more opponents at once. They added a slowdown function but that is only helpful when you are managing a lot of troop. Two fighters don't need slowmo. They need back up.

It's an ok game. There's nothing terribly wrong with it, but it's not very interesting either. Coming into this game, I was expecting something like HeroScape or Settlers of Catan; what I got instead was an extremely shallow RTS wannabe.

Probably my biggest problem with the game is its focus on realtime action. I guess this would be fine if Wartile weren't trying to model itself after a TABLETOP game - seriously, do you know of ANY tabletop RPGs where units fight each other in real time? This baffling design choice almost singlehandedly ruined the experience for me.

You also have some minor annoyances, like how the game refuses to show how much damage is being dealt for some reason; or how there's no way to manually select which units attack which enemies. Yeah, they're irritating, but it's nothing ragequit worthy. But overall, the reason I stopped playing the game is because it's simply not very fun, strategically interesting, or even boardgame-like, despite it billing itself as a "tabletop game brought to life."

Character customization is also rather limited. You can only ever bring up to 3 units into a mission, despite the game giving you 6 or 7 playable units. None of these units are very deep, so the core gameplay loop winds up feeling very boring and uninteresting. Strategies for all the battles boil down to "put tank in chokepoint, DPS go brr."

It's a disappointment, really. It's not a bad game per se; it's just ok. But I'm going to have to go with Steam's binary "Not Recommended" here because there are so many games which are much better than "just ok."

Lifeless arcade game pretending to be RPG and Strategy.

C-grade interface with particularly awful movement (e.g., selecting units individually, or guessing where group movement will place the followers.) No scrolling of the battlefield. Poor visibility. Shameful absence of manual saving. Illegible texts on the cards...

Could have been playable with a pause, or with a turn-based approach, but this mess is only accessible to the reflex crowd, not to the majority of strategy enthusiasts. Even then, the tactical options are very limited, and their effects not noticeable.

Add some soporific music and narration for a story that fails to engage, and I had no fun at all with this one.

It is very nicely drawn, but the tactical options are quite shallow and the gameplay becomes quite repetitive very quickly. Also, the user interface between missions is not great.
It is not a bad game, but I was expecting more of it.

I am a lifelong tabletop gamer. Given the choice between a tabletop game and a video game, I will pick the tabletop game every time. As such, I really thought I would love this game, but it fell very very flat with me. By automating combat, they have removed essentially the only interesting or tactical part of the game. For two levels, all I did was move miniatures around. There was no limit to this. There were no obstacles to overcome. There was no strategy required. Every two-three seconds, I would pick a piece up (it wasn't even a strategic choice in which one), move it three spaces, set it down, and then do the same for the other piece. Sometimes I would wait for an enemy to die - and that is EXACTLY how involved combat is in this game, just sit and wait for your opponent to die. There were cards that I never needed to click on. There was equipment that I never needed to swap. There were battle points displayed on the bottom of the screen that I never needed to pay attention to. There was apparently a cooldown timer that ticked down so fast that I never even noticed it.

The deckbuilding aspect implies some strategic depth, but the game waited way too long to introduce that aspect. I was bored to tears after roughly 40 minutes of: Move, move, move, wait, move, move, move, move, wait, move, wait. My time is too precious to spend another second waiting for this game to gain ANY semblance of strategy or tactics.

Tabletop quest for the Sagas

Wartile is a strategy game allowing the player to take command of a Norse warband on a quest to save their land from a mysterious plague. Developed by a very aptly named danish studio PlaywoodProject, the game plays as a miniature wargame. Each character in Wartile is represented by a wooden figurine, battling their way across adorably detailed dioramas. While the game had visibly limited resources to work with, the developers have fully committed what they had towards an idea of tabletop game brought to life. An idea, in my book, they firmly delivered upon.

Hopping around
By far the most unique aspect of Wartile is how precisely the game plays. Rather than being a turn-based game, this title is what developers dubbed “cool-down based” instead. All the figurines move simultaneously, though each action (moving, attacking, using abilities) has a specific... cooldown. Most of the dioramas have an uneven terrain and figurines gain significant defensive advantage while placed higher than the enemy. Alas, each skirmish sees both your warriors and foes hop around the board, constantly trying to get an edge over the enemy. Given that the player has up to 4 warriors to control, combat can get pretty frantic, especially at later stages of the game. To allow the player a greater degree of control over the warband, Wartile utilizes an active pause. It is especially useful for deploying abilities of each character during a single “turn” for devastating damage.

Each to their own
Out of the 6 warriors available for the warband, each represents a different “class” with dedicated weapon of choice and set of skills. The spearman will only be able to use a polearm, the archer will fight only with a bow and the witch frowns at everything but staffs. Every character has a set of strengths and weaknesses – making certain characters better-suited for specific missions. For instance, the archer and the spearman trade off defence and health for higher attack range. This trait can be of great use in the open field, where the distance can be maintained. On the other hand, they become tricky to employ in narrow corridors of a mountain stronghold. Then again, the burly two-handed weapons expert can benefit from the close-quarters and press the attack without fear of getting flanked. It’s just an example of one among many solutions but I believe it pictures quite well what Wartile is truly about.
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2259503810
To further add on to “mix and match” each figurine has 3 abilities to choose from before every battle and on top of that, the player has a deck of 5 action cards. While the abilities are limited only by cooldown, the action cards can be used at all times, provided you have sufficient Battle Points, rewarded primarily for killing enemies. All of the warband members are unlocked fairly quickly as the player simply progresses through the game. Unlocking their abilities also comes naturally as you play with each figurine. The action cards are a much bigger part of Wartile. These cards include buffs, healing, enemy damage and all manner of utility effects. A basic set is rewarded for simply progressing the game but to unlock all of the options, many missions have to be replayed on higher difficulty levels.

Of draugr and men
Enemies encountered by the player are mirror reflections of the warriors in the players own warband. They may be dressed differently and some enemy types are exclusive to an enemy “faction” (e.g. Norse witches and Anglo heavy knights) but the principle is generally the same. To add some variety to enemy ranks, human foes are divided into visually distinct factions – the mentioned hostile Norse tribes or Anglo soldiers. Furthermore, at later stages of the game you get to encounter enemies of myth – undead Draugr and ice-covered Jotun. Beside the plot, Norse mythology influences are present in Wartile as more of a slight nod to the player, albeit a welcome one.

Every map has pre-set combat zones, signified by blue tiles. Once the player’s figurine enters each given zone another skirmish begins. Wartile is definitely a numbers game and each mission sees the player kill dozens of enemies, alas it stands to reason that the title at least gives the time to prepare. The title occasionally does try to introduce a little variety to the formula – there is a mission which sees all of the enemies asleep and the player is supposed to prevent them from ever raising the alarm. Small as they might, these twists succeed in keeping the combat from feeling stale.
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2259504373
Worn basic club
However charming Wartile can be, it definitely isn’t free of flaws. Probably the quirkiest part of the game is the equipment system. There are no inventory slots in the game. Lacking such indication I nearly completed this title without ever discovering that there are leg guards in Wartile. Gearing up your figurines with better arms and armour is vital, as they increase the warband’s “rank”. Rank in Wartile serves as power measure – if your warband matches the rank for given mission you are most likely ready. Alas, the player often enter additional fights in hopes of reaching an extra loot chest or earning more gold to buy equipment from the merchant at exorbitant price. The problem is the amount of gold earned and merchant’s stock improve along with warband’s rank – meaning that, at first you can’t remotely afford quality gear, only to later simply drop it from missions once you could finally buy it. The entire economy in Wartile is flawed to the point of being borderline redundant.

Another matter is that Wartile practically forces the player to grind. The game does try to increase its longevity by coaxing you into replying missions on higher difficulty levels for better loot and more experience. The problem with it is that if you tried beating the game without any replays, the final missions will be nigh-impossible to complete. It’s not much of hassle but not exactly a virtue either.

Valhalla awaits
All things considered Wartile is, however unpolished, an indie gem. There is something endearing about how well the game executes its tabletop convention. Certain parts of the game, especially the ”lobby” from which the player chooses next mission, are undercooked but the dioramas themselves are both fun to play and reasonably varied. On top of that, I can’t recall a single bug occurring throughout my entire playtime. Admittedly, “cool-down based” combat is awkward at first and can be off-putting to some but otherwise Wartile is a perfect, small game to fill several evenings. If mix of simple tactics and indie charms sounds inviting, I strongly recommend giving this title a try.

I wanted to so badly like this game. I have gone back a couple times to revisit this game to see if the controls have gotten any better... unfortunately, it has not. The the problem is the game is laid out in a hex turn-base format, but the game plays action style. This is where the frustration comes in. Its the movement of pieces and trying to put them in the position you want for strategic battles, but I cant because maps are so frustrating.

Your warriors are cut off because restriction of movement due to restricted hex spots to move on. While you are trying to get your pieces moved around to get in the position, your front warrior is already dead. Oh, and the cards.. the playing of your cards is ridiculous. having to drag the card all over the board, and also having to select the right warrior that can use, and trying to position, and battle and heal,.... its all just to much. the game should have stuck to a turned based board game (which i have a feeling was the intention upon first development), instead of trying to make it more "mainstream". The whole game fails because of the poor battle design. That said, kudos to the graphics... beautiful. That is the reason why i keep coming back,, i want to play in that world, but if its not fun, then what is the point?

On some boards, enemies will drop quest items (mostly for optional objectives). These quest items occupy a tile, and no one can move onto the same tile as a quest item drop. This ordinarily wouldn't be a problem, but as this is a tactical game, you will often be fighting in choke points. If you defeat an enemy, and that enemy drops a quest item in a choke point, you run the risk of being unable to progress.

This can occur because you apparently cannot pick up quest items in combat. And you cannot move onto the quest item, or past it if enemies are standing nearby. This can deadlock, where you cannot hit enemies since you cannot move into range. And you cannot remove the item because you cannot move into combat range.

This happens fairly commonly and is extremely annoying when you've almost finished a board, only to get stuck.

There is only one thing that sucks BIG TIME !
You have to finish the map (or board like its called in the game) or you have to start it all over. Whats the problem with starting again next time on the last waypoint ?
Not every gamer is some 15year old with endless time on his hands. It spoils the fun if you are chained to the game for the next hour or so or it was all for nothing.

This is one of the times where I wished Steam had a "meh"-option. It´s not a bad game - some will adore it despite ist flaws… "It has a lot of potential"!

positive:
+ beautiful diorama-style
+ nice "camp"
+ atmospheric music

negative:
- no manual (link on Steam is deceptive). SOME of the concepts are only learned by chance, trial&error (see next paragraph). Some not at all: When do you see traps? Which character can carry which armor and weapons? What are the damage-statistics? How many XP to level up?
- some "surprising" design choices, e.g: you can´t sell unique items. Random merchant ware. Characters can carry only one item, which must be used up before picking up a new one. You can choose 5 god-cards to take into battle - but only 3 of them are randomly available at the same time. Tokens can´t be switched - except rare tokens, which can...
- rather short: only 11 levels…on 7 unique maps
- …but you have to repeat some of these maps/"challenges" on higher difficulties to gain necessary experience + items
- bland characters with no storyline or interaction between them

Good game with beautiful artwork. At it's core, is a good set of mechanics that make the gameplay fun and unique.

That said, the campaign seems to be only 5 levels, that you're forced to play through multiple times, and there are only 6 figurines to choose from to fill out your party. I've exhausted all of the new content out of this game in 4 hours. For $20, I expect more.

I am a long time player of tabletop games and this caught my eye.
In short, I love it.
It looks great and the difficulty is challenging so you have to think about what you are doing, which is very rewarding.
The missions have a good variation, different objectives, there are little puzzles and surprises (ambush!) that keep you on your toes. In addition, the missions are played on bite-sized gorgeus game boards and you are not bogged down with endless battles. Great for when you do not have time for hours on end.
This is a great recreation of a tabletop game.
My only negative comment is that you sometimes pick up the wrong figurine or special ability card which can be a pain.
It would be awesome if you could customise the figures and give them your own names, or give them different colours or if there were cosmetic items which could change appearence. Might be an idea for the future.
So if you like tactical games and/ or tabletop, this is something you definitely should pick up.

This game is not advertised as a turn based game. It does support a super-slo-mo mode with space bar, and that gives even the most hardened board gamer MORE than enough time to make tactical descisions and plan their moves. Only the most pious zealot will complain about not being able to pause. Really, this game is super FUN, with high personal reward when completing a map due to the sense of urgency by NOT being able to actually stop time completely with a full pause mode.

Graphics: Check the adveristing video and screenshots. They do not lie. This game is gorgeous.

Music and FX: The sound track is available as a separate item. That says it all. In-game effects are spot-on, and the slo-mo cascade bass effect really gives the game its own signature feel. It's so powerfull that you'll start to wish you could do it IRL. It's fun!!

Gameplay: I'm 17hrs in, and I've enjoyed every bit of it. Premium tooltips and a great intro-map serve as effective tutorials without actually having to go through a formal sluggish tutorial. The interface is minimalistic, but gameplay mechanics allow a great deal of playstyle freedom. These two factors are fantastic together. You play how you want, nothing is forced on you, not even TIME with super-slo-mo!!

Story: The game story isn't shoved in your face with unskippable cut-scenes, or garbage cliche' Camelot style ticker-text. This game just gives you small bite sized narrative plaques for each map mission. It's really passive, just the way I like it.

Buy it. Drop an axe into a viking's rib cage. Hire a witch. Shield bash some poor dude's face in. Poke 'em with a spear. Throw fire bombs. Drop poison traps. Turn enemies against each other. Run past drunken vikings and take their loot. That's just the third map...

This had the potential to be a magnificent game but a few odd design choices killed it for me. The key features came close but missed the mark. For example,
1) The graphics are very good and the levels are detailed and gorgeous so I found it very odd that the camera was bound in ways that made it difficult to view them. There is no elevation adjustment so you are stuck with a static viewing angle. Why artificially limit the ability to see the great work here?
2) The gameplay would work very well as turn-based but uses some hybrid. You can slow time but not stop it. There are still turns with cool-downs for movement but your units automatically attack repeatedly as long as there is an enemy in range. This gives you neither the strategic options of turn based nor preplanned movement of RTS and turns moving into a bit of a click fest. Also, the lack of pause again prevents you from taking the time to soak in the graphics or get good screenshots.

I tried this when it first came out and didn't like it. I waited several months to give it another shot but my opinion remains the same.

So - first impressions of an early access game....TL;DR - Very Good.

Core i5/16Gb/GTX1060/W10

PRO's
Great looking game
Feeds the inner tabletop nerd (if you ever played table top, this is right in your wheelhouse)
Fantastic premis - I can see a great deal of additional content in the future
Quick loading
Seemingly pretty well thought out maps
So far a "fair" RNG feeling
Challenging - you arent going to walk these maps first time

CON's
Dev needs to resist the future lure of the paid DLC route...the temptation will be huge.
Low/Medium/High video settings; need to feed our desire to burn our retinas/wreck our cards.
Camera controls - sometimes get stuck..no biggy, a zoom out will fix it.
Tutorial could do with a little expansion.

All that being said, I'm a handful of hours in (didnt participate in the alpha) to an early access game and not regretting dropping the 14 bar as soon as it was available. I can see this game growing, and the toybox expanding with cards, items, factions, heroes, classes, maps (dioramap's?), etc.

Yep, a positive first impression.
