Is the game perfect? No. But its definitely the best "No base building" WW2 RTS on the market.
The best RTS games of all time EASILY! Endlessly replayable.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a4On8lM-tk0
Visually amazing, it's everything I had ever hoped for in a game. FPS, third person and RTS as an old Close Combat series player I had longed for this. you people who make these games are truly amazing to me thank you for the many hrs of fun this game has and will continue to give me.
This is a good RTS WWII game. Love the fist person view! Better than most of the ones I have. I like to play it, but I am getting old I guess (70) have trouble keeping up with it and always lose, LOL. But in my defense, I am not a grognard. I consider myself a hard casual gamer. Retired IT guy, been around PCs since DOS and my first love was PCs and wargames. Having never been in the military, (yes, that is correct) I have always had problems with planning, LOL. Anyway, well worth the money. Especially on sale.
This game is really great! It's like the legendary Men Of War and even better!
CONS:
The Medics most of the time (if you don't set them to "Hold Fire") will fight enemies instead of healing the wounded soldiers! Devs should PRIORITIZE HEALING to fighting, without the player having to change the Fire Mode of each Medic each time, so the Medic would FIRST HEAL the downed soldier (even if he has to go prone) and then return incoming fire! It's kinda stupid for a Medic to fire his pistol against an enemy equipped with a PPSh-41 and letting the wounded soldier die!!! With 5-6 Medics around you loose control, and soldiers...
Also the Pathing AI needs some extra attention and improvement. Soldiers, in order to go from point A to B using the trenches, often climb outside the trenches, exposing themselves to enemy fire and die 90% of the time, if you let them go their own path. One should set waypoints in trenches for them to stay inside them! It's crazy really!
The same for vehicles! Even though they are supposed to travel faster via roads (by default) than any other type or terrain, but they instead seem to run in a straight line most of the time, taking the shortest route from A to B!
PROS:
The BEST PART of the game is by far the ability to go from Tactical View (where you see all the map) to 3rd Person View, and finally 1st Person View. Well, "emulated" 1st Person View, as you can't climb ladders for example, while in this view... But even emulated 1st Person View is AWESOME ! ! ! You can even adjust how much zoomed in or out this view would be!
It turns the game from RTS into FPS ! ! !
The controls are a bit strange until you get used to them... They are quite different to MOW! Still, they ARE customizable...
If you are not sure if you'd like this kind of game, better watch some videos on YT before buying it. But for a MOW fan, is a MUST HAVE, as it's even better...
I strongly recommend this game to anyone though...
It's a pretty nice game, the best WW2 RTS I have ever played with no lack of good mods. Yes, the DLC's are overpriced but totally worth it if your willing to spend it. I reccomend the liberation DLC and the Taviosta DLC. Both introduce 1 new faction each, America and Finland. Both have lots of content, USA having more than Finland but the mod M.A.C.E Increases vehicles/soldiers for all nations.
I highly reccomend this game, even if you think you wont like it, just buy it, give it a go and refund it if you dont like it. :)
As an experienced player who has all DLCs (As of now), I can confidently say that this is one of the best WW2 tactic games out there. I do not leave reviews very often, but this game has earned it.
Good job.
Though Gates of Hell still shares the same frustrating path finding as its predecessor, it is nothing less than a labor of love and it shows. With its beautiful graphics and the latest sound overhaul putting Gates of Hell leagues ahead of any other WW2 RTS on the market. I have hundreds of hours on both titles and I couldn't recommend this game more, if not for the great missions each faction holds in the campaign or the very active online community but for its Conquest mode being the cherry on top of the landmine.
With fairly consistent updates and the British being added in the near future along with what I would suspect will be even more nations to follow, I believe Gates of Hell is a must have for any RTS fan.
The game optimization is a mess, game keep stuttering and have low framerate. AI targeting is ass when the enemy is in front of your unit and they don't shoot there is something wrong. Bad pathing unit randomly cancel order because a rock in its way. When the game works it's great but most of the time i'm just fighting the flaw of the game.
This is a fantastic RTS, definitely the best ww 2 RTS currently available on steam, it leaves company of heroes, men of war and assault squad to in the dust.
The dev team have don a brilliant job making this from the call to arms engine as it eclipses call to arms in every aspect, to game that just plays better and it so much more fun to play.
This game is a must for any PC RTS fan who’s enjoys squad sized RTS games and it looking for something new.
Fantastic RTS, similar to Assault Squad 2, and the older Men of War Series. Runs really well, and has an excellent Dynamic campaign against AI. No need to own the Call to Arms game, this is standalone. On sale its very worthy if you like RTS games. British are being added in future expansions, American DLCs have been added more recently along with Western Front Theater.
One of my favorite RTS games of all time EASILY! endlessly replayable. I just wish someone made a 40k mod for it as good as assault squad 2
I've been playing men of war games since the original Men Of War in 2004. I played Gates of Hell: Ostfront for about an hour after i bought it. Within 24 hours I had all the WW2 expansions. This is by far the best RTS out there. There is so much content to do. I figured the sale saved me about 40 dollars. Thank you for all your efforts and I would absolutly recommend this game.
Game is very fun Idk what to tell you its on sale at the time of this review id say you should buy it
Great game
I really enjoy it so far, lots to learn but worth the time and effort
A real pleasure to play.
In this game, you can drive tanks, and first person infantry. Good. Sometime bad, it crash when weather. Friend has problem, his computer turned in to a portable rocket.
Lots of bugs, very frustrating... However unique gameplay RTS, 3rd and first-person options inside of two game modes CAMPAIGN and STORY.
The videos are good, the voice acting is a spectrum of horrible to authentic.
The game is good enough, but lacks being fleshed out in many ways much like their previous title CALL TO ARMS which seems to have been abandoned with some glaring bugs.
The UI is minimal, leaving a lot of lack of QOL and information needed.
All in all its positive for me, but with a slightly shady side.
The most fun for me is in the dynamic campaign where I can play with RPG mechanics of my units improving throughout their life.
PLEASE LISTEN TO YOUR PLAYERS AND DEEPEN THIS GAME.
fun game very little lag even on a low end laptop mods and workshop are supper fun and overall the game play
is addicting and there are endless scenarios u could create
It is a fantastic RTT experience. Coming from the MOW legacy, I still bow down to this amazing creation. Proves that the GEM 2 is the Kalashnikov of real-time tactics game engines.
Highly recommended for hardcore WW2 enthusiasts and gamers alike
One of the best games ever made! The amount of content you get with just the base game alone is insane, its a little overwhelming the first time you play a custom campaign but once you figure out what troops are good its a lot more fun. MODS - this game has plenty of good mods and I haven't played them much yet since the base game is so good.
The short version: It’s a great WW2 game with lots of content and well worth a positive review in spite of its shortcomings.
The long version: Before I go into detail, I only play single player so take it for what it’s worth.
The good:
- The game features similar gameplay as MoWAS2 and SirHinkel’s missions. There is so much you can do in this game that you can’t do in any other games. If you've played Heroes: SoWW2, FoW, MoW and MoWAS, this game is the pinnacle in the evolution of that series.
- There’s a ton of content, especially if you buy the WW2 bundle. If you get it on sale, the price is very reasonable.
- The game has great attention to detail and historical accuracy as well as lots of different types of units and lots of things to do with them.
- The graphics, voice acting and weapon sounds are greatly improved in comparison to its predecessors. This game is far more polished in its presentation.
- The interface is simple and visually pleasing, very unobtrusive, yet it has everything you need.
- The game is better optimized than MoWAS and MoW. It uses the computer's resources more effciently. I do recommend having it installed on an SSD to cut the long loading times in half.
- The devs are very active.
- Modding is easy and there are a ton of mods available in the workshop.
- The missions are unlocked and you can skip the ones you don’t like.
The bad:
- The game doesn’t feature all of the factions, nor all of the theaters from the previous game. It is being expanded through DLCs which you have to buy separately. When on sale, the price is not bad at all, but because of the dev team limited size and resources it may take quite a while until we get all of the major factions – Britain and Japan are missing at the time of this review.
- There is a lot of micro around certain types of units and certain types of actions and things can get clumsy and frustrating, medics for example.
- The player AI is nerfed in comparison to the enemy AI. This is particularly noticeable with the accuracy of artillery.
- The pathfinding can be annoying though it’s honestly nothing we’re not already used to.
- The visibility of units was much better in MoWAS. The units blend a bit too well with the environment. The trees are also too big and obscure the view unnecessarily. I would like to be able to see the little dudes doing their thing.
- Some of the campaign missions have poor design and they are heavily scripted. I don’t like stealth missions at all. I prefer the skirmish format.
- The learning curve for complete beginners is probably steep I imagine. The game is not easy. In my experience it’s a bit more difficult than MoWAS2. There is a very nice tutorial now though.
Its more like men of war than company of heros, but it does have some unique features, id reccomend it on sale, probably not full price just because the multiplayer is kinda dead during the daytime and the ai is kinda stupid.
I like the concept and the realism.. need better optimisation if you're going to have this much micro management (which i personally found tedious after a few hours). I don't want to have to tell the medic to heal the wounded guy 5 feet away or constantly be putting individual units back in foxholes. or just Generally have units get stuck due terrible path finding.
if you like a super challenging RTS with a lot of realism like worrying about ammo and fuel etc for every individual unit on the field to the point where you are missing the action because you are just doing busy work then you might like this.. In all honestly i'll stick to Company of Heroes.
game would be fun if the AI actually followed orders and their pathing wasn't complete dogshit
This game killed Company of Heroes for me.
The attention to detail, tactical flexibility, and and the ability to manually control / aim with units makes for intense, god-tier tactics gameplay.
Something of a spiritual successor to the Men of War series (uses the same game engine, in fact), GoH is mostly successful in polishing that series' weak points to almost AAA standard.
Some criticisms I have are the occasional pathfinding issues where units will take the most threatening routes to their destination ("No, 101st airborne paratrooper, please don't run into the field of fire of that MG42 that you KNOW is there"). It would also be nice if units prioritised following trenches instead of preferring the straight "as the crow flies" path that has the unit wandering in and out of them.
The voice acting also varies wildly in quality, though it is never "The aim is in the reach zone!" bad.
The gameplay can be very micro-intensive as each soldier has limited ammo and an actual inventory to manage when they run out far away from an ammo crate (you can pick up weapons off the ground and search the inventories of the dead for ammo for each individual soldier). I only play single player, so I mitigate this by slowing the game down (Backspace key) enough until I can "Catch up". However, you can't do this in skirmish / conquest / multiplayer, so if you're new, definitely start off with the single-player campaigns.
Pick up the base game to see if it is your cup of tea, then pick up DLC in accordance with the front/missions you are interested in playing on.
Highly recommend.
In this game, if you want an infantry unit to get dug into foxholes you have to individually select a soldier, position and line up the foxhole, repeat for every single soldier, then regroup them all back into the squad since this process splits each solider into its own unit. This is bad enough just in theory, but is made even worse by how janky every step of the unit micro is. Even the two mouse buttons are confusing - the left mouse button might be used for selecting a unit, or unselecting a unit, or cancelling an action, or performing an action depending on the situation. Same goes for the right.
Oh and then your dudes will just walk out of the foxhole by themselves when you're done.
the options menu is god aweful, the change of controls makes no sense... 2 of the controls use the same key but when you try to change them both to a same key of another key... they wont let you.... ah LOGIC PLEASE?!?!?!?!?
played the first game and instantly found a issue tried to move my soldiers from the tank and the game refuse to let me... stupid game... its actually depressing that at 2024 this is the best they can come up with !!! pathetic REFUNDED
Basically men of war 2 as it should be...nice visuals, superb sound of tanks weapons. 3rd person, 1st person..wow. clever unlock tree. Challenging. Here and there bug but nothing serious. Worth.
I'd recommend only after some seriously easy fixable flaws are fixed and its mental they exist.
1. Changing weapons in 3rd person makes your character do the most weird spinning animation.
2. You can't jump.
3. You can't move and kneel at the same time as you just stand back up?
4. 3rd person in general is pretty poorly implemented just the overall experience is just off. (AN overhaul of this would be game changing.)
5. The AI is just really bad - you can shoot them in the face and they'll just stand there.
6. sometimes the fog of war doesn't update quick enough and enemies will just appear out of thin air only once you've stared at them for long enough???
The above points alone i can't imagine being hard to fix, but I'm not a developer, either way if they get fixed (i hope they do) it'll improve this game soooo much!!
It's basically MOWAS on steroids. The unit control is way better and adds to the immersion. To be fair I haven't had such fun with a WWII game in quite a while so kudos to Barbedwire Studios for making this lovely piece.
It's moddable as well, so replayability is there too.
All in all, I recommend it with both hands.
The base game, priced at $8, is incredibly bare-bones and feels more like a demo than a complete experience. It’s clear the developers intended for players to purchase the DLC packs to get the full gameplay, which are currently bundled on sale for $45. This model feels incredibly disappointing, as it essentially forces players to pay significantly more for content that should have been part of the base package. It’s frustrating and feels like a bait-and-switch, turning what could have been a promising game into an expensive, fragmented investment. I may pick up the game and DLC at some point but not at this time, to many other games to play.
i have played this game so much that i will always make this my main RTS game to play i hope to see more factions and more areas of warfare to the devs please if you make a game like this again a monden warfair with the map sizes and room for real helos is great
The game is unplayable for me now. When I try to launch it, it freezes at the first frame of the intro. Deleting shader cache didn't work, deleting and reinstalling the game didn't work, launching the game as administrator didn't work. nothing is working. I love this game, I just bought the Scorched Earth DLC, and now I can't play it whatsoever.
The game does some things right, but too many wrong. The graphics are very muddled, and frame rates are a constant issue in large battles/multiplayer. Infantry dies instantly even when entrenched, making heavy tanks the only viable unit. The AI is dumb as a rock, sending wave after wave of units into the same prepared defenses over and over again. The only challenge is the AI will send significantly more resources worth of troops against you.. but again, if you have the bigger tank you will win. One tiger tank can single-handedly win you any map.
Suggested improvements: unsupported tanks should be easily wiped out by infantry. This would be achieved by significantly nerfing tank-mounted MGs. Right now they insta-kill any infantry in a 180 degree arc in front of them.
Entrenched infantry should be very difficult to kill, requiring close quarter infantry combat. Right now you can just drive a tank up and MG them from long range within seconds. Historically, tanks usually just drove over/past trenches because they had no realistic way of clearing them. This was done by the close following infantry.
MGs in general need a significant nerf. Right now they can instantly kill dozens of infantry. And i mean instantly. Game has some promise, but needs work and devs seemed mostly focused on paid DLC content and not fixing basic mechanics.
before i start bashing it, i want to lead by saying the sound design (bar voicelines) is INCREDIBLE. the guns sound *real*. I've caught myself ducking at the sounds of bullets wizzing by. the artillery both outgoing and incoming is terrifying, and the cacophony of a mortar battery going off or a heavy MG position is just straight heaven.
BUT.
all you F***cking do in this game is defend.
There is a single, normal attack mission for the german campaign. about 90% of your gameplay will be "Commander! lay mines and set up your defenses!" I stg every single mission has you place a minefield somewhere, so good luck if you dislike the inventory system; which sucks, btw. i love micro managing a single man to go pick up an enemy rifle because i wasn't given an ammo truck (or a way to spawn an ammo truck). oh your whole squad is out of ammo? have fun clicking the two dozen menus and zooming in alllll the way to tell that one guy to pick up the enemy rifle.
besides that, the missions feel *impossible.* Over and Over getting steamrolled by tanks because your AT guns are 1. out of ammo (because it took them 8 shots to kill bt7 #1 out of 20) or 2. non-f***ing existent. the game feels liek it wants you to repair enemy tanks and commandeer enemy supplies, but the system to do so, in regards to the supplies, sucks! And the system to repair enemy tanks works perfectly fine if the tank hasnt been shot 20 times, which it almost always has if its anything more than a light tank (which are BARELY worth taking anyway)
it has a lot of promise and i love playing it...until my units start running out of ammo. you get given the bottom of the barrel in terms of supplies (which IS historically accurate but its not fun to *play*) and are expected to scavenge through the inventory system with singular soldiers while getting shot at-
BESIDES ALL THAT. the voicelines are comical. besides the VA for hauptmann everyone sounds like theyre from an 80s action movie. And besides THAT, half the time the subtitles are *WRONG*. had a helluva time in the "fortress/stronghold/whatever of the eleven" where the subtitles told me "enemies from the east!" and the VA said "enemies from the northeast!" and the enemies came from the WEST.
I'm going back to men at war assault squad, jfc.
they nerfed officers for optimisation not good also they banned me from their official discord server because i accidentally leaked new units without knowing they were new
As much as I love this game, I have to say, and for warning, this game has many issues that is too frustrating to endure
1. The AI are all dumb as hell in many ways.
-AI pathfinding is shit. You will often see they would just stay mid way because an obstacle (most of the time there's no obstacle) and they coudn't find a better way to reach their destination. Sometimes you'll find your truck crashes on the road for no reason.
-The game enabled friendly fire by default and if you're not careful enough, your anti tank guns might shoot your own tank and destroy it immediately if it in the AT gun line of sight.
-Tank gunners easily get distracted by enemy infantry that aren't even within their sight and they often turning their turret elsewhere rather than the direction where enemy tank is coming from.
-Dev even had to create a special button to lock ammunition type that is loaded to the gun breech because tanks/anti tank guns always got distracted by infatry and will always attempt to load high explosive ammunition rather than armor piercing.
2. THIS GAME ISN'T STABLE AND TAKING TOO MUCH RAM TO RUN
16 GB of RAM isn't enough to run this game. My RAM usage is always at 90%-ish everytime I run this game even though I started my computer through clean boot. The game stutters a lot and I can only get 30 fps (if lucky) and usually drops to 10 fps, especially in conquest. One of the Soviet campaign from the DLC also very much unstable and unplayable because it stutters a lot, lot more. I'll tell you, my computer could run 2018-2022 games in 80-110 fps on average, but not Gates of Hell.
This game is a view into how you perceive the worth of a human life. Do you send all your troops to be blown to pieces, napalmed, or shredded? Or do you keep them behind cover, and send a tank to protect their advance? It's all a scheme to see how you value life. I myself, could not care less if my troops were incinerated because it would look cool to see an entire squad burn.
this game truly is my RTS Game soul mate i'm addicted to this game and still find it enjoyable after all these hours
10/10
can't wait for it to expand into new theatre's and new mods from the community
The game is interesting and well-made, but there's just too much micro-management to be enjoyable. It has impressively realistic mechanics when it comes to armored vehicle combat, taking into account different types of armor piercing rounds and their efficacy at range and even versus sloped and non-sloped armoring. The ability to individually take third-person control of soldiers during combat is also great, letting you speed up drawn out combat or execute precision stealth maneuvers while the rest of your units are in open combat with enemy troops.
But the inventory system... Following the realism of other aspects of the game, each soldier has its own inventory with limited ammunition, ammo, repair items, healing items, grenades, ect. In theory this sounds like a cool concept, as it adds to the realism by requiring you to outfit your troops individually with the types of ammunition and weapons they'll require to create customized squads and individual soldiers. In practice, this means that you are constantly managing your soldiers' inventories when a supply truck isn't available. Managing one soldier's inventory is fun and unique. Managing ten or more soldiers' inventories at the same time is frankly exhausting. Nothing breaks pacing worse scrounging around a battlefield to restock ten soldiers and making sure their equipment is well-distributed. What should be a unique and fun mechanic quickly becomes a complete and sudden stop to any fun you're having actually engaging in combat. And keep in mind that, true to realism, different armies use different weapons and ammunition types, so you're not just gathering generic ammo types, you're also making sure that the ammunition you just picked up works with your gun or that you have enough room to steal your enemy's weapons
A similar problem exists with controlling individual soldiers. Joining your soldiers in combat as a third-person shooter is an amazing and fun concept, but keep in mind that this is also a real-time strategy game so while you're controlling one soldier, you're not controlling the rest of your army. I believe there are some controls for directing units while in third-person mode, but it's likely related to only that unit's squad and I'm not sure how much control you really have. The third-person mode problem is less problematic than the inventory system, since you have limited control over other units and gameplay doesn't halt while you're shooting up the place.
If it weren't for the inventory system, I would totally recommend this game, and others might thoroughly enjoy the micromanaging required, but to me it just feels like it drags the game to a grinding halt. It's sad, because this game has some amazing ideas and fun gameplay, but I want to be actually playing and not micromanaging the inventories of 10+ units at the same time. It's clear a lot of work went into this game in terms of realism and just general good quality development, but it falls into the same trap as most games with hyper-realistic mechanics. The mechanics get in the way of actually playing and enjoying the game. Maybe if the game had simplified the inventory system or just gotten rid of it entirely in favor of either a kit system or a general supply system to keep the realism of still keeping your units supplied without requiring you to sift through 10 or more inventories at the same time.
If you enjoy hyper-realistic war games and don't mind the general slog caused by maintaining said realism, I can quite easily see how you'd enjoy this game. It's well-made. Very well-made. I just can't say I personally recommend it. It's painful, because I really WANT to like it... but I also want to play the game, and it really doesn't feel like I am when I'm micromanaging inventories. It's just not for me.
At the moment of writing this review my gameplay has been filled with frustrations with the in game mechanics. The ingame control as commander is tedious, the AI struggles to follow your orders. The UI is unorganized and soon after a round starts you end up with a mess of units on a field that you are frantically micromanaging because you have manually know and replace guys that die because i guess the infantry doesnt know what cover is if controls were easier and some bridges be met, the AI could be fun to handle but at the moment it is a CHORE
This is really more enjoyable for the spectacle than anything else. If you like seeing things blow up, then you'll love this. If you want to play a more compelling RTS, this isn't the right game.
game is amazing, bugs ruin the game insanely, specific maps will crash you to desktop, specific gamemodes will crash you to desktop, expect a lot of crashing. but it's fun, 6/10 it would be a 10/10 if the game didn't crash every time I didn't want to play battle zones by myself
the game is great awesome skirmish mode and multiplayer the campaign is a challenge also
THis game is corrupted . Updates make saves unload-able . Steam should step in and make them make this game playable again. I shouldn't have to have a degree in programming to make it play .
Only but this if your a men of war/call to arms fan, bad performance especially online with the usual MoW awkwardness.
Absolutely love the game although it is in desperate need of some performance updates as every update the game gets it just seems to get laggier and laggier.
All of my time in this game has been in singleplayer. I've played maybe 4 multiplayer games ever. As someone who started with Company of Heroes 1 & Men of War 1, this game is amazing.
Honestly I'm more than entertained playing against AI in skirmishes or the dynamic campaign. Most nights after work I boot this up and play for a bit and it definitely scratches the RTS itch in a really satisfying way. Theres nothing better than seeing an AT ambush playing out perfectly! Even when you're losing its still fun trying to fight to the last man in pure desperation against a swarm of tanks and infantry
The regular campaign is good, but I don't really play it that much honestly.
If you're a fan of the genre rest assured you'll have plenty of fun on your own. The AI can give you a pretty good run for your money
I finally have over 100 hours in this game so here is my review!
I come from playing MOWAS 1 and 2 and CoH1 and CoH2 so when I got this game I wasnt exactly blind going into it. But boy this game blew my expectations out of the ballpark. If you do not wanna play steel division 2 on such a grand scale but want a more realistic MOWAS2 this game is definitely it.
The servers can be a bit crap but the singleplayer experience is amazing I love it. the dynamic conquest constantly brings something different and it is fun with the overhaul mods.
The modding community is amazing and makes the game very fun for sure. Overall game is chefs kiss for a small scale rts WW2 game it is worth every single penny definitely over Men of War 2 with the crappy armored health system.
Really good game but why for the love of god does this game take all of my 24GB of RAM and still crash from lack of RAM
