Very Good
Charming, unusual control scheme, appropriate challenge level.
I'd like to start by saying that the game is artistically wonderful, and fun to play- If you're really fast at typing- but the game has a few issues.
The story is nice. Easy to follow, and I wasn't expecting the ending.
There's a problem related to the story, though. In the game, each area has a chunk of the story in it, shown through dialogue, or through a collectible picture you get in pieces from treasure chests. The four areas where you get your new abilities are labeled as chapters 1, 2, 3, and 4... but there are 8 areas. The final area isn't labeled as a chapter. You don't get a new ability in it, so I guess it's sticking to the rule, but it's a bit of an odd choice not to label the finale, when you've labeled the other "significant" ones. I guess those other 3 could be seen as extra or bonus areas, but they contain chunks of the story- And some pretty significant parts of it, too. I don't think areas with significant chunks of the story should be in hidden bonus areas. I say hidden because the game doesn't guide you towards these areas, and I had trouble figuring out how to get into two of them. In fact, halfway through the final chapter, I went through a portal that I didn't know would send me back to the start of it, for some reason. By then, I'd realized from context that this was the final act, and backtracked to do the other three areas. Thankfully, in the very back of the final area, the narrator warns you where the point of no return is, so you can backtrack if you want to.
That's the biggest issue with the game though. Just parts of the way it's designed. Let's get to the good parts!
The art. Amazing, beautiful. How do you make rocks look like they're rocks, but also made of paper? They have this cool unfolding paper animation for loading new chunks of the map. Waterfalls, since they're a sheet of blue paper, end in little curls of paper strips. The enemy design is cool. The papery look adds a lot of personality to the game.
The gameplay. Good! You type the right words to whittle down the health of your enemies. The pacing is definitely fast enough to create a sense of urgency, especially since you'll die if they hit you just once. There is no health bar here. Thankfully, the checkpoints aren't very far from where you died.
The gameplay does have one thing that's less of a problem for the player, and more of a design issue. You get different elemental abilities, such as fire, wind, ice, and electricity. Each of them does something different, and each attack looks different when shot off, and that's cool. The problem is, fire is the best one to use, to the point where I rarely used the others in battle. The game kind of has to force you to use the other abilities, by making some enemies only take damage from one of the other elements. Also, the spark ability is actually a little disadvantageous. It's kind of long to explain, but essentially, it hits multiple enemies, so when you're typing a word for an enemy you didn't aim for, the word can just disappear halfway through, because the spark branched out and hit that enemy. It only wastes a few seconds, but those seconds and breaking your flow state like that can mess you up in the later battles. Seriously, you have to type lightning quick for those.
Anyway, overall, the game is gorgeous, has a nice story, and is pretty dang fun.
it makes typing fun but doesn't teach sentences.
I wanted a typing game and this delivered. Gameplay is fun and difficulty increases at a challenging but not overwhelming pace. The aesthetic is fun, and the world is engaging to explore. My one complaint is that the story feels very unfulfilling at the end, but i wasn't playing it for the story so that's not a detractor for me.
great game for getting better at typing and learning new keyboard layouts
Very pretty to look at, fun and relaxed to play
I played this with a new ortho keyboard and decided to learn the Workman layout with it.
Now I know what old people feel like when you ask them to type something.
Gameplay-wise, it's very poorly optimized, you need much better hardware than
the mentioned minimal requirements.
Except for that, it's an indie masterpiece.
Such a unique and exciting approach to gameplay. I had so much fun playing and finished the game in one sitting. I also found myself in awe at the artstyle, music, level design, and so on. Finishing fights felt rewarding and worthwhile, and the story narration felt so true to the "storybook" aesthetic. Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed, and found myself eager to overcome the word battles rather than feel daunted and frustrated. Challenging, but within reason. Absolutely loved!
Fun game to work on your typing skills. It also has some nice problem solving games as well.
Super cute little gem.
it helped me tipe better becuse i cant leval up unless i do it corectly and now i am much better at tipeing
The typing words to battle system is lots of fun. :)
Beautiful paper art that constructs the landscape is the highlight of this fun typing adventure
Amazing!
Epistory is amazing. So fun, and helps you practice typing so as to improve your touch typing abilities and speed. I wish that there were more of these games. Outstanding!!!!!!!!!
It looks pretty with the origami art style, sure. But clunky controls, boring enemies, a repetitive soundtrack and writing that is far more pretentious than it has any right to be made me dislike this otherwise passable typing game.
Great for learning how to tpye
The story and ending was quite a surprise! I thought this was just a wholesome game to get you to type faster! It do the latter. but former was a pleasant surprise!
All in all I really enjoyed Epistory. There's really a lot of potential to this being the gold standard in educational style games. Right now I’d give it a solid 8/10 and I really hope they keep making games like this ‘cause with a bit more polish I think this could define the market, like Typing of the Dead and Mario Teaches typing.
Pros:
- Beautiful Art and Music
- Voice actress is top notch
- Abilities are fun to play around with in combat
- Story is simple but lovely and matches the calm tone of the exploration
- Though I was not a fan of the movement I understood why it was important for keeping your hands in good position and appreciated the WASD alternative for the puzzles
- Interesting environments and catered to fun exploration
Pain points:
- Tuning felt off for teaching people to get better at typing. It had good ideas but felt like it was a bit all over the place. Example:
- Single letters monsters and puzzles based on getting familiar at the QWERTY keyboard seemed to be used more in chapter 3-4 though they would have been better for warming up in chapter 1
- Numbers weren’t introduced to later chapters but small 4# codes would have been nice to trickle in early
- Long scientific terms for common materials were in chapter 1. Would have been nice to see it broken up to more common terms like Pebble and Granite in chapter 1 and then Sedimentary and Stalagmite, then more complex scientific terms etc etc.
- Combat went on for far too long with no checkpoints. This made the game almost rage quitable when you were in for nearly 10 minutes and then one monster sneaks by and gets you. The last desert fight was the worst for this. It went on so long that the looping combat music was starting to make me lose it and I had to take off my headphones to stay sane. This doesn’t add challenge, just frustration. It would have been nicer just to have more, shorter, nests of higher and higher difficulty as the level progressed
- Words and letters sometimes get lost in the noise. Sometimes this is because monsters come from the bottom of the screen where there’s too much going on with your abilities and exp bar. Sometimes it’s because you’re in a bright area and the letters blend into the back. Monsters snuck up on me twice just ‘cause my eyes didn’t register they were there. Suggestions:
- A darker gradient is behind the letters to make them pop against the background
- Because the camera is fixed, to make sure creatures don’t come up through the bottom to avoid clashing with the spell words
- Would love to see more sentence structure puzzles than just words. Especially because there’s this nice story going on it feels like it would lend itself do doing fun sentences in a few places
All in all I recommend this game and I know it’s been a hot minute but I hope Fishing Cactus returns to these types of games because there are a lot of people out there who really appreciate them.
For first-time touch-type learners, this is probably decent.
But for switching to a different layout, I think it would be better to start from something more relaxed.
Also I couldn't figure out an elegant solution for moving while using home row mods.
This is a beautiful narrative game that has the wonderful side effect of helping you type better and faster. I started with my stats at 25 words and thought the goal of 40 was a reward I would never get, now I am trying hard to get the achievement because it feels attainable. It also accidentally helped with my spelling of certain words and expanded the words I knew. The story is beautiful, the artwork is amazing and the gameplay is unique and fun
.
This game is a cute way to practice your typing skills. Expect a good 4-6 hours of practice for completing the main campaign. The strong point of this game is its visuals, but I found the puzzles and battles challenging enough to stay engaging the whole way through. The story unfortunately is where this game suffers. It is cliched and I disliked the ending.
Overall, I still recommend it, but only if you know you're getting a typing program just as much as you're getting a game.
i wanted a typing-based game to take my new keyboard for a spin, but this is much more than just that. so creative and super fun
A great experience that teaches me that I really should've paid attention to my keyboard classes I had as a kid - the sad reality is I'm bad at this game; However, a great experience nonetheless - I can't wait to play more of this and to check out the other Fishing Cactus collection!
The greatest typing improvement simulator
Amazing way to learn to type!!!!
I use Colemak btw.
A unique and fun game, story is pretty simple - but the typing 'mechanics' etc. is quite good.
9/10
I enjoy the art and mystery slowly evolving as well as getting a little better at typing accurately.
N/A
I love this game, it has an awesome gameplay mechanic in terms of combat.
I downvote it 'cause it has no LATAM prices. Full price for south america, not worth with that price
Would've been a fun typing game and easy recommendation. But the overactive camera animations can easily cause motion sickness from just a few minutes of playing.
The game has no option to disable them. It's a lot worse if you have a desktop monitor and play full screen. You might be ok if you have a tiny screen or aren't sensitive to a lot of motion.
Devs (or their reps) were a bit dismissive when I brought it up some time ago.
Can't freely recommend the game unless it's solved.
Great game to make typing practice fun! Cool art style and sound design too.
pretentious
Amazing game, but moving mechanic is quite a disaster. If you would to introduce a small change such as allowing WASD letter to be used to move character around it would make the pace much fluid and then then flow of the story would be fast. I will check in the future and buy again if this has been changed or just give the option. I am fast typewriter but the movement is counter intuitive. It is a big YES with this small update.
Best typing game I've ever played and it has a good story too.
I got this game because I love foxes and ended up loving the game too. It is really unique although getting used to the movement controls was a bit awkward for me. It used asdf instead of the standard wasd so that you can keep your fingers on the home row for typing.
This game will not teach you to type. I would recommend it to anyone at a touch typist level. It has an adaptive wpm mode so that it keeps challenging you, but I think you can set a steady wpm too. It is a fun way to practice that isn't an incredibly mind numbing typing program.
The visuals are really pretty and I enjoyed the story, but my only minor criticism would be the story is a little cliche. There is a magic system for you to use in your battles and they way that they have adapted these elements is neat. The puzzles are doable, I think there was only 1 that frustrated me a little bit.
I really enjoyed this game. I also bought their sequel when it came out. It is more of the same, so if you like this one you will most likely like the second. I didn't enjoy it as much as this one, but I'm not sure why. They are both fun and engaging though.
