Great game, highly recommended!
Very cheap game, survive as long as you can. Lowest graphics imaginable. Can give you a good amount of hours relative to price.
It feels like someone's first game project. Its not terrible. However, If you ask me most of the complaints are reasonable.
Shmadow: is a difficult minimalistic bullet-hell
In this White Supremacy simulator we play as Bitler, taking on the Million Man March. Occasionally the Commie state shows up, but we hit it with steady white propaganda and fell the random red beast.
- Simple control scheme.
- Quick play in the dark.
- Boss fights are alright.
- Boss mode unlocks.
[*] Steam Leaderboards for bragging rights, or tears, as with all leaderboards.
Wow. I don't think I've seen a gimmick backfire so badly.
Pros:
-Multiple powers
-Leaderboards
Cons:
-The Light Mechanic. This idea isn't good for twitched based action games. I'll Admit it's an interesting Idea, but It needs to be handle better.
-Glitched Graphics for Windows users, THAT DON'T HAVE A GRAPHICS CARD. Which is ridiculous since this game looks and runs like a flash game. What's more insulting is that with the same set up on MAC and LINUX, This game runs fine. HOW DID YOU MESS UP SO BADLY!
-Graphics look bland
-Uninspired enemies
-Unfair difficulty. Enemies and Bullets come out of nowhere.
I don't care what price this game is. A bad game does not deserve a high recommendation. Though to be fair to the Devs. This is a hard game to pull off.
This game s comes with a good feel to it, runs beautifully, good varitey of bosses too. Always trying to beat highscores!
i do recommend this game to thode who love a retro feel. Good music, good achievements.
"Shrinking dot in darkness"
Does shmadow mean "mad shadow"? However this game is a simplistic space shooter and bullet hell. You fly through dark space and only your shots can light it up. Black bubbles everwhere. Then appear the bosses in a row. Like rotating red and yellow bullet spreading twisters, rotating lasers or bubble spaceworms. One is changing gravity so that all background bubbles come from one side. Tho the game is flat 2D and the powerups are not very useful or there isn't even a decent tutorial the game makes fun for a short while. If you get hit your dot shrinks down to a minimum dot. A nice game mechanic. Achievements just count from normal difficulty up to nightmare. Local coop included, steam leaderboards and a techno loop soundtrack. Nothing special but quite enjoyable.
It was cheap and I had a coupon, so I bought it. It's addicting, challenging, and fun.
I would like to see them add something that tells you what power ups you have. As it is, you have to figure it out on your own, or when you use them.
If I had to describe Shmadow in a few words I'd have to say it's as if bullet hells, endless runners, and sidescrollers had a child. There isn't very much to say about this game but let's talk about it anyway. You're a ball of light who shoots other balls of various colors. Your character and your bullets produce light allowing you to see through the darkness. The more damage you take the less light you produce making it harder to survive. You get get an attack that recharges over a short cooldown and you pickup powerups which can also be used to assist you. You fight bosses and your objective is to make it as far as you can without losing. That's pretty much all there is to say about Shmadow.
The Good
- One of the easiest achievement hunts you'll ever see.
- You can play through the entire game and refund it if you don't enjoy it due to the game being so short.
- You don't need a controller to do well (I got every achievement using keyboard and mouse).
- Due to trading cards existing you'll make a large portion of what you spent on the game (if you bought it on sale) back from selling them.
- Very short soundtrack although it's a very fitting song that doesn't get annoying.
- Regardless of how much playtime you get it's still only 2 USD.
- Several difficulties/modes.
- Really cool bosses.
The Bad
- Super short playtime (15 ish minutes if you're playing normally and 30-90 minutes if you're achievement hunting depending on how good you are at Shmadow). One playthrough of the game is enough for a player to see every boss along with the majority of the content.
- I like the graphics although I cannot deny that there was very little effort put into them.
- There's no tutorial although there's a controls section on the main menu.
[*]You have to use the powerup to know what it does (they have no titles, just icons) and for a game this short I doubt you want to memorize all of them.
If you're poor (and I mean very poor) this game isn't a good choice for you considering the lack of playtime you'll get out of it. If you aren't poor you've got nothing to lose no matter how much playtime you get out of it.
How to play Shmadow:
1. "What?"
2. "What is this?"
3. Convince yourself you're about to have a light-induced seizure
4. Remember you don't have epilepsy
5. Have light-induced seizure anyway
6. Try again
7. "Okay I think I've got it now."
8. Time slows down
9. Fuck yeah this is sweet
10. Time speeds up
11. Wut
12. Die
13. Kill boss after respawning
14. Feel cheap because you only beat him by dying
15. Die on next boss
13. Realize you're pretty high on leaderboards
14. Try again
10/10 Would pay for light-induced seizure again.
Go to Store (Featured), Click on Games, Narrow by Feature (Steam Trading Cards), Relevance (Lowest Price).
Then skip to Page 9 or 10, until you find the .50 - $1.00 games.
Add them to your Wishlist, games that are a dollar can go on sale and you may be able to purchase for cheap!
A game at .50 may give you that value back in trading cards.
Search and Install "Idle Master" which will run your games even without the game being installed.
I may or may not ever play this game, but some games I have installed and messed around with on a rainy day!
@ .50-$1.00 it's hard not to recommend!
This game is extremely cheap which is important cause while I have played this game I feel like alot in reality I have barely spent any time at all.
The reason is that each playthrough last from a few seconds to a few minutes. This has to do with the super twitchy play style, which I find is great as a warmup to a good night of gaming. Get your mind focused real quick then dive into something.
It cost less the a fast food meal, what are you waiting for...
Shmadow is a horizontal shumup, I recommend play it using a controller, this shumup is a hybrid with twin stick shooter where you can only see the dark bullets with light bullets, something like the game "ikaruga", its very interesting to avoid dark projectiles in this game, and the amazing soundtrack makes it a must buy.
+unlockable guns
+amazing soundtrack
+hard
10/10
Challenging and very fun shooter. Nice simplistic visuals that look very nice, easily worth the full price!
time killer 10000
also, what makes this unique - endless blinking that makes you tired really fast..Great soundtrack by the way ))
Hats off to Extrakold Games! I remember playing this game with some keys that RJ handed out and hoping that something happened with it, and I am glad to see that something did! The only regret I have with buying this game is not getting it while it was at full price, because Extrakold definetly deserves my money! I can see myself sinking hours into this game, and I can't wait to see what else Extrakold puts out.
I absolutely love this game! The achievements aren't that hard to get, it's got fun powerups, the bosses are pretty challenging, and I'm addicted. Worth it.
Quick Breakdown: A twin stick shooter, wherein you play as a ball of light, fending for oneself amidst the darkness.
Length: 15+ minutes
Genre: Arcade / Twin Stick Shooter
Score: 5/10
Full Review: There’s not a whole lot to this game; you play as a ball of light in a world of shadows, except for the background, everything in the world is dark. You illuminate your surroundings with your bullets and with the ball of light that serves essentially as your vessel. Plenty of random blobs of darkness hurtle toward you like asteroids, and will darken, and even blackout the area until destroyed or passed. Occasionally you face bosses, whom will drop various power-ups.
That’s really all there is to the game, and that’s the trouble with it; I want to like this game, but there’s just not enough to it. The shadow gimmick remind me a bit of Limbo (though the art isn’t nearly to that caliber), and it’s kinda a neat one, but there’s very little to the gameplay. There’s no levels, or end boss, you just play for a high score; and while that’s not necessarily a bad thing (both the original Geometry Wars and Waves are twin stick shooters that do just that), the gameplay isn’t gripping enough to compel me to aim for a high score. The levels and enemies are randomized, so that at least helps mix up the gameplay a bit, but it’s still not enough.
I want to be able to recommend this game, but I can’t. After playing it for a mere 15 minutes, I’m probably not ever going to touch this one again. It’s not bad per se, so much as it’s not enough. Still, I only paid $0.50 for it, so it’s not like my wallet is hurting from it. But if you need a twin stick shooter, you’re better off buying Geometry Wars 3 instead. It’ll cost you a bit more than this game, but it’s well worth it.
Shmadow is a nice idea that is poorly exicuted. The dots of shadow that are randomly flying around would be fine if the area you could see was not limited. The area of the screen that you can see them consists of a where you are shooting and an area around you that get smaller and smaller as you loose health. The other enimies you can always see, but it is hard to deal with them when you cannot see your suroundings.
Another problem I had with this game is that the controlles did not feel right. (Although it may just be me) In a shmup game like this feel is every thing. When the movement and shooting do not feel right it is hard to enjoy the game as a whole. (I played with keyboard and mouse and with an xbox controller)
Although I do not recomend the game, I do like the music and I think it could be a great game.
It's a really great game. The Soundtrack fits, the powerups feel good and the difficultylevel are tuned just right.
It's worth the money, even more on sale.
super fun, and fast paced! co-op is awesome cant wait to get some buddies to play with. Bosses are super interesting and the music is awesome! 10/10 worth
