But Samuel Longwood keeps an ace up his sleeve for occasions like this…
Chaser awakens on board the spaceship H.M.S. Majestic. He doesn't know who he is, what he's doing here, why he is being sought by men in black uniforms and what they will do to him when they find him…
The player's goal is to find out who Chaser really is and why he is being hunted. The story leads the player from the H.M.S. Majestic to Montack City on Earth, then on to Siberia and finally to Mars, where the trail ends and hopefully the truth can be found.

It's better than it seems at the beginning. The game starts terrible and get better little by little. It never gets amazing. But it's old school shooting, it's janky and it shows a great effort by the developer to offer something interesting from the point of story telling.
I think you can enjoy this game more today as a nostalgia thing than when it released.
6.5/10 - Chasing Excellence. Never catching it.
I'll be honest, the game is kinda jank and is WAAAAY too long but I still enjoy it. It has a decent amount of weapons to play with but it also has forced stealth missions and awful water levels that used to make me physically ill, but at least it supports 1440p.
PEAK!!!!!!!!!
BUG-CHASER or Total Fail of Recall
***Occasional spoilers below***
When I started playing I was going to write a positive review. There still going to be some residual praze.
The beginning is amazing. The first enemies you encounter are hard but in an interesting way - place your shot well and you barely spent a a few rounds, get a well placed shot - and loose most of your health. Thus you end up playing tactical, thinking on every turn, and if you do it right, then you come out on top. That's how you make an interesting combat and make the player engage in game mechanics - not bullet sponges always placed the way (that would never happen in real life) to hit the player and make them reload (Yes, "Prey", we are looking at you). The level itself is logical, realistic, but still serves the gameplay... And then downhill from there
The further the missions, the more environment becomes more in-your-face game level and less actual functioning living and breathing space with certain everyday function. I threw those thoughts away after Yakudza penthouse - an actual feudal Japanese mansion that you see and feel people live in, during the rain (actual raining rain!) and a view of New York-like metropolis... But by the time you get to Mars non of immersion from that moment is left... That was one of two things keeping me playing (yes, I know you looked at my time played). Second was...
The story. The story was good... until it wasn't. It looked like the authors just lost their inspiration somewhere after the middle. Until then I would close my eyes on cheesy voice-acting. After Mars it made story looked forced. Even the twist in the end that you probably saw coming the from after mission... 3, I think, suddenly feels contrived and a tragedy for tragedy's sake.
Artificiality of level-design doesn't help. Oh, you wanted to run around and shoot bad guys like in "Total Recall"? Too bad for you - here's an obstacle course with bad guys who... how the hell did they get there?!! And good luck finding where you need to go/climb - we'll make a puzzle game.. without puzzle, just try everything. Oh you didn't know you should climb THESE SPECIFIC irons stuck out of the wall of a falling apart rebel base? Well, too bad- you should've thinking like a burn-out schizophrenic. You wanted to fight along-side rebels? Sorry - no allies in post half-life game. We don't do it over here. Invisible walls and shitty jump mechanics don't help either. Last third of the game is you thinking "Am I doing this wrong or am I not supposed to do that at all".
Also, also - remember int the beginning enemies not being bullet sponges? Guessed already?
Well, ok - you think - I'll show them how I can kick bad guys' ass myself. After all I'm a goddamn Chaser who is looked for on both planetsss.s.s.s.s.s.s.s.s. Sorry, You'll have to reload earlier save - you are stuck on the... something. And don't try to no clip if game engine locked you - Steam disabled noclip command. Doesn't matter if it's not your fault. Do over. We don't provide entertainment here.
Ladders. As i mentioned - Half-Life came 3. YEARS. BEFORE! And it nailed ladder usage. Well, forget a habbit of using it as normal being - ladders will throw you off should as much as wave your mouse. And gods forbid you start descending immediately: prosecutors fined with 80 health (yeah, tough guy Chaser is really frail in his knees; that's probably he jumps worse then Alan Wake runs (the untrained civilian)).
So yes - from the breathtaking to abomination. Slowly, like some poison. That's what it is.
Do Yourself a favour - watch the walkthrough on youtube and spend Your money on something nice for Your loved one... or Yourself.
literally a water level in a mech thing with the graphical glitch that made it almost impossible to continue.
otherwise, its a below average game.
At least its funny hearing chaser speak, sounds like he is blasted everytime he speaks
This game was pretty bad as the enemies instantly kill me when I turn a corner and the voice acting is also pretty whack, the soundtrack is really good though and I use it for background music
this game is alright its just that the movement sucks.
Well, let's have a look into this game shall we? The story does not add up, the world building is confusing and the premise is probably written on a knee. Why I did assume this? Simply - the game was probably thought as action game set in late cold war era - why I did assume that - weapons, general dialogs or how the game proceeds indicates that the Mars and Space station were made later and of course were added in the last minute. The things as that Russian forces in game are clearly called Red Army whitch uses attack choppers, uses AK-74s and is very poorly equipped for 2150s. That no weapon is newer than 1990. That cars look like 70s and 80 designs. And under of wave of increasing popularity of various TV series and Movies on sci-fi genre decision has been probably made to convert it into sci-fi action shooter. The game is pretty generic, heavily scripted and time consuming. Graphics are mediocre for 2003 standards. Game tries hard to hide it's original identity through in game scenes showing us a space technology like cholographic screens, brain implants and space shuttles just to show one of NPC we will fight is using stationary phone later. I played it just to check out it from my library - if you consider to buy it - consider it well.
Alright, where do I start with this one? I've just finished playing through it on my Youtube channel (link at end of review for anyone wanting to see a gameplay sample before buying) and there's a lot of stuff I can potentially say about this one.
I picked Chaser up mainly out of a mix of curiosity but also nostalgia, because I remember encountering the demo of this game as a teenager back in 2003. So when I saw the full game was available here on Steam, naturally I decided it'd be interesting to take a look at this old game and see if it was actually any good.
So a quick heads-up: Chaser was originally released in 2003, and that leads to the first thing you need to know - it's one of those old, janky types of shooters. The story is that you are John Chaser, a man who escapes a death squad sent to kill him; escaping to Earth, you set out on a mission to recover your lost memories and get revenge on those who tried to kill you.
Now I will say this: this game does have some interesting ideas, and there were elements of it that I did like. Some of the levels were visually appealing to me, such as the Majestic Station and Nippon Hotel levels. And I do appreciate some of the more cyberpunk elements of the game's aesthetic. On top of that, the basic premise of the story isn't a bad one - it all depends on how it is executed.
Sadly, execution is where this game often falls down, however. One of the biggest issues is that some of the levels are just too long - many of them could be shortened considerably and would benefit from it. For example, the warehouse mission where you have to defend a smuggler from a rival criminal group just felt like it dragged on way too long; I also had similar thoughts about the underwater shipwreck graveyard level and some of the later, Mars-based levels. On top of that, other level design was kind of bland, in my eyes - such as the stealth mission where you have to spy on a yakuza chief, or the waterworks mission.
What about the actual combat? Let's just say, it can get quite challenging - and not always in a good, thrilling way. Some of the enemies react with ridiculous speed when they see you, and can whittle your health down incredibly fast - which becomes a real headache in areas where the game decides to be stingy and not provide you with a great number of health and armour pickups to compensate. In short, there will likely be many a frustrating area where your progress slows down to a crawl as you fight through a load of tough enemies whilst trying to preserve a dwindling amount of health and armour already shrunk by a previous encounter.
But one of the game's biggest problems for me was the ending, and how the story concludes. Given some of the long-winded level design, Chaser will likely take you somewhere in the region of at least 15 hours to complete - only to find that the ending itself is (in my opinion) quite anticlimactic. The devs attempt to introduce a twist in the story, only for me it didn't land right as it made me sit there and reflect on the fact that I'd just spent roughly 18 hours of gameplay (including sluggish progress through long-winded later levels) for an ending that doesn't make it feel worth it.
But apart from the massively fluctuating quality of level design and the anticlimactic ending, there are other, smaller but nonetheless noteworthy issues too. The voice acting isn't the best; for some reason the devs decided to include an awkward crouch-jumping mechanic similar to old-school Half Life; and there may be occasions where the game crashes (I had one of these right at the very end of the game). Furthermore, some of the enemy and/or weapon balance felt off to me. Perhaps it's just me being a bit of a noob, but later in the game some of the human soldiers felt ridiculously tough, able to tank multiple rockets.
One final question I think is worth raising: was it just me, or did the game also seem a little inconsistent at times with its overall vibes? The setting is in the year 2145 (I believe this is mentioned at one point), yet the game uses 20th century weapons. On top of that, despite most of the game having a cyberpunk vibe, there's a section where you go to Soviet Russia (which apparently still exists in the Chaser universe) and here the cyberpunk vibe disappears somewhat. These two things do make me wonder what the development process of this game was like back in the day, and whether the story went through some drastic changes before final release...
But all in all, the points above give you an idea of why Chaser gets a thumbs down from me. If you're okay with jank, then give it a shot if you want - but I can't personally recommend this one.

Chaser sure is a videogame that you can probably play, not that you should, not because is bad, but not because is good either.
I didn't have a good experience but not a bad one either, idk there is some aspects of it that i end up liking a lot, the soundtrack and the art style are pretty charming in a way, but overall playing the game itself was a torture.
idk man figure it out yourself (and i mean really, figure it out yourself).
Trash
"Chaser" is an overlong and broken mess, but it's an interesting mess. It takes place in the future on a space station, Earth and finally Mars but doesn't have aliens. You have a couple robotic type enemies but you mostly fight humans with weapons that usually aren't futuristic. The story is just strange, as it involves like an espionage tale about money laundering with random forays into Japanese Yakuzas and Russian militaries before devolving into an even weirder story that has a ridiculous and comedic twist at the end. I won't spoil it, but it makes the whole game even more ridiculous than it already appears on the surface.
This game is similar to John Romero's "Daikatana," an overly ambitious FPS game that creates tons of content but doesn't know how to make all of it particularly compelling. There's loads of variety here, you have a stealth stage, a stage where you pilot a mech, a stage where you pilot a submarine, a sniping stage, an escort mission, etc. The sheer amount of different levels is pretty staggering. It's actually the longest FPS game I've ever played. There are also a ton of guns, and each gun type seems to have several variations so your weapons loadout is always being switched.
Unfortunately, when it comes to the actual game play, that's where problems begin. First of all, the levels are gigantic, some taking over an hour to complete and requiring you to really navigate the stage on your own because there's often no logical apparent path through them. You only get one autosave, but there is an autosave hotkey (F6 by default) to let you quickly save. If you die you can simply click to reload. With that said, if you're the type of person who likes to play through FPS games only using the autosaves, this game is going to make you go insane, as it did for me.
Initially I couldn't beat the first level after an hour of playing on "normal" so I switched to easy. I had completed the game's tutorial the previous day so I didn't know there was a "slow motion" function. It's pretty terribly implemented but it can be helpful at times. Basically you can go into slow motion at any time, similar to the game F.E.A.R., but unlike in F.E.A.R. you can't strafe to dodge the bullets. Enemies will still hit you, and you will likely still die.
The combat is fun when the enemies have low health. If they have high health, they will kill you, pretty much always. There is a part where an enemy spawns behind you and instant kills you. If you happen to turn around, go into slow motion and fire several shots directly into his head at point blank range, he will still do more damage and kill you. All you can do is run in the opposite direction, but the game gives no indication of this. As you can imagine, if you are trying to play this game using just the default saves, it's going to drive you nuts.If you save frequently then the game has very little challenge but is less stressful. I beat this on "Easy" and "Normal" without anything but the autosaves and it took me about 100 hours, the last level taking me like ten hours to finish.
I became obsessed for a bit because I couldn't figure out why I was dying so frequently. As it turns out, there are enemies who basically have "instakill actions" where, on any difficulty, they can just fire some shots instantaneously and end your run. I'd say it's "Dark Souls"-like but you're really not changing strategies. It's either luck-based or you're manipulating the environment. Of course if you're constantly restarting massive levels you start having to develop speed running strategies so you don't lose your mind trying to get back to where you last died. I have to say that this experience was fun but overall not really worth it as this game is not really worth playing for over 100 hours. You can expect to spend at least 20 hours finishing this game if you watch the several hours of cutscenes.
The graphics aren't great, but the environments are just so weird. The game doesn't really do "physics puzzles" like in Half Life, but it does create weird labyrinths where you're just supposed to figure out where the random crag hidden behind some rocks in the corner is so you can proceed. There's a part where you have to circle around an obstacle then jump up some debris and then climb some random side of the wall that clearly doesn't look climbable to proceed. It's just bizarre. And the more huge levels, like one where you are walking toward a space station in a huge open area, tend to have even weirder platforming because it's not clear where you're even supposed to go due to the size of the map. Given the maps are so huge, you'd think there might be vehicles, or creatures or robots, or something, but the larger maps are bizarrely desolate. It looks like they just created the map and established the path through it later on, dotting it with enemies along the way. There is a level on Mars that is almost completely desolate. You're just wandering outside on the surface of mars without any enemies or anything. No dialogue, just you wandering. It's kind of surreal and even though the game doesn't feel unfinished it doesn't really feel polished, except for the Japanese-themed stages which weirdly have tons of details like breakable boxes, distorted reflections in glass, etc.
The last 1/3 of this game is an absolute nightmare but then you just walk into a corner, face a load screen, walk down a corridor and the end cutscene abruptly begins. Is this old game ultimately worth playing? I would say yes IF you don't mind broken combat where death is inevitable. The weapons are a lot of fun to use, especially the explosive weapons and the ones with the scope. The audio design is terrible and the graphics are pretty dull, but there is a lot of content here and if you like long solo FPS grinds then this game is giving you more than you could possibly need or want. Just keep in that it's not all great content and this game is often fun but also frustrating. Try beating the game just using the autosaves if you want an adrenaline rush.
THIS GAME IS GARBAGE:
The graphics are distant past and weren't that great back then.
There are WAAAYYY too many cinematic cutscenes that it'll drive you crazy.
The game is so poorly unbalanced, that the enemies hit you and kill you before you even know they're there - they shoot around corners, through walls, through heavy steel boxes... just about anything you can use for cover, they'll shoot through and kill you.
I've been a gamer since the mid 1980s.
This game is not fun; it makes me wanna hurt myself, hide from humanity and become a crackhead, slowly fading from existence.
The punishment of this game is unduly wicked.
This is no way to live, punishing oneself throughout this entire game.
I uninstalled and hid it from my visible library - I NEVER WANNA SEE THIS GAME AGAIN.
My deep colon hurts so bad from buying and playing this game that I will never forgive Steam...
Better than Civvie described it.
