The game won't launch anymore for me and I've tried to fix it. This was an amazing game that I grew up playing and even got my dad into it. I'm sure it's still an amazing game just would like to play it and get it working again.
Working on steam deck without issues with newest proton. There's guides in the community hub if you want to install the missing dlc. Mostly mouse based, which works decent with trackpads or controller sticks, but I still prefer a bluetooth mouse.
I cannot recommend this game (along with the other 2 in the series) highly enough.
My dad introduced me to this game, and I've loved it ever since. I finished it once, and planned to play a lot more. Unfortunately, it now doesn't run on my computer, and it hasn't since I updated to Windows 10. 😟
Hopefully I can find a way to fix this and play it again, because this is genuinely one of my favorite games ever.
I used to play the hell out of this game when I was a child. It is certainly a relic of its time. It works surprisingly well on the steamdeck and can perform even better with a trick or two that can be found on ProtonDB. One important piece of information about the Steam version of this game is that it does NOT come with the Legends of Arana expansion.
The multiplayer, and by extension the multiplayer map, is disabled on the main menu and cannot be selected. To bypass this put zonematch=true in the launch settings.
I highly recommend looking for the LoA expansion online somewhere, if you can somehow find it after all these years. The game also has a surprisingly active modding scene on the nexus.
If you're looking to just pick up and play, then I can't recommend the game enough 10/10. 1 & 2 were fantastic while DS 3 was total garbage. However, as a retro/indie streamer, I'm livid. My viewers have been asking I play DS as many have heard of it but never experienced it, BUT THE GAME WON'T CAPTURE ON on either Streamelements OR OBS Studio. I don't know why, but it just won't. Just playing the game normally, everything runs fine for me, had to slow it down a bit cuz the mouse was a little to fast, but other then that it runs fine. BUT, I purchased it so I could stream it and the fact NEITHER OF THE TWO BIGGEST STREAMING PROGRAMS can capture the FUCKING GAME is absolute BS!!!!!!!
Edit: I have found a very inconvenient way around capturing the game. set it to capture in window (full-screen=false), have it captured as a window source, shut down DS and remove the full-screen prompt, then launch the game normally and the window capture for some BIZARRE reason suddenly captures the game. This is the ONLY way I have found the game will capture. I get the game is old, but this is nuts.
The Gist:
If you want to play one of the classic dungeon crawlers of the early 2000s. This is the game you're looking for! I would also recommend trying Dungeon Siege II as well. And checking out the community hub/page for this game.
Pros:
- Easy "point+click and your character will do as instructed" interface.
- The community hub/page has plenty of guides to show you where to access the Legends of Aranna expansion, play with friends online, install mods, extra maps, etc.
Cons:
- You will need to go to the community page to trouble shoot some stuff IF you have problems with the game crashing or find and install old maps, mods, etc. that you may remember using when the game first came out. (But one of the pros is the community hub/page has got you covered!)
Played the whole game a bunch of times, and mostly using only the map view. I regret nothing.
OMG Its playable!
Good for nostalgia. It's got good loot, skill, and leveling systems. I really enjoyed the party composition mechanics as well. None of my characters felt too squishy this time. Worth playing once through.
Also, put this into the launch options for an increase in graphics resolution beyond what the game will allow you to choose:
`nointro=true width=1440 height=1080`
I couldn't get reliably higher than that 4:3 aspect ratio of HD 1080.
My favorite game when i was a kid.
Classic dungeon crawler, if you want a nostalgia hit, buy this game.
I finally had the chance to play this after about 20years, when i first played it.
It's cool.
Don't know really what to say.
I wanted to replay Dungeon Siege 1 from my youth again, but it didn't go well for me.
The balance of the character is a mess, same for loot.
But what annoyed me to extreme Naidis buffs started to run faster out, then it seemed timers and visuals were still there, but stats were down only through rebuffing beforehand, which made me kind of able to track her timers, but most times I was extremely off.
I needed a mod to easily extend buff duration before it made me insane.
But all in all, the standard campaign was not fun because of me trying to hold the levels of the group together and making merchant runs to get some kind of useful gear. (found out how to reroll more easily much later, sadly...)
I am simply not a fan of constantly throwing your companions away...
Sadly, I made my mind to play this plus DLC never had them in the past. If I understand it right, the loot is not as bad there anymore.
From the actual point in time, I can't just say yeah, thumps up.
Let's see how the DLC campaign works out.
I want to point out I never have played an RPG where finding loot felt so bad, like in Dungeon Siege 1
Oh, yeah, and the camera was extremely fun sometimes (not)
Classic dungeon crawling with a party. I love the level up system that allow characters to improve their melee, ranged, and magic skills as they use them. This game is still a lot of fun even in 2025.
This game is still playable in 2025!
I liked exploring the different region types and managing a group of adventurers in a single continuous massive game world.
There isn't much of a story nor choices with consequences though.
The most memorable part for me was attacking a huge goblin hideout and using their own weapons against them.
And on another instance, my party was split when several members fell into an underground temple of sorts and had to find the way out and re-group.
loved it as kid same now, little sad that since it's an older game, when i kill the final boss the game bugs out and puts me in the menu so I can't get final cutscene
best game 2002
classic
While this game is old it has so much character and charisma that most modern games can only dream of. DS has pretty difficult start and you have to think about your class ahead of time which is not really friendly to the newcomers, but that adds to the games charisma. I would highly recommend this game to anyone who wants a challenge.
Dungeon Siege – More Than a Game
I didn’t play this on Steam.
I played this over 17 years ago.
With a friend. that to this day i played a lot more games.
No voice chat. Just Hamachi, in-game text, and hours of pure co-op magic.
This was my first online multiplayer experience.
No pings. No toxicity. Just two friends exploring a world that felt huge and alive.
The music? Burned into my brain.
The world? Beautiful in that classic high-fantasy way.
The map? We walked every inch of it.
No markers. No fast travel. Just immersion.
It wasn’t about builds or meta.
It was about adventure, discovery, and having someone next to you—even if it was just text in a chat box.
Pros:
– Timeless soundtrack
– Huge open world that begged to be explored
– Seamless combat and party mechanics
– Played great solo or with a friend
– Hit different if you grew up with it
Cons:
– It’ll never be your first co-op game again
– Nostalgia hurts in the best way
10/10 – A memory I’ll carry forever.
Crashes in the first minute. Good thing it was $1 but even that is too much for nothing
Good old school RPG. Runs great on Steamdeck. Just use these settings and set the graphics to maximum in-game.
Compatibility: Proton 7.0-6
Launch Options:
fullscreen=false width=1280 height=800
what a bummer, the game crashed right after the final boss battle. good game though.
A classic that it's still enjoyable with friends
This game is my childhood and love the game great story line can be hard but very fun
ඞ
Been playing this game for many years....old yes but still a good game@
This 20 plus year old party RPG is as fun to play today as it was when it first came out. The sound effects are satisfying and the music is beautiful to listen to. This game is like a dungeon crawler meet steam punk. Somehow it all works together to make the hours just melt away. Be aware, beyond this place there be Dragons!
It's an old game but one that is still fun to play. Easy mechanics, more easy on your hardware. Even the cheapest pc can run it 10 fold now. :D More important, it still can offer some nice gaming time. Decent story and a simple yet evolved enough RPG mechanic behind it. Fun in MP ( Local area one ) loved it back then, still love it now. As it is an 2002 game, well graphics aint the best, but can be boosted with tools :)
Besides the random crashes, this is a very nice old game
great game. just wish it had legends of arana included. the only reason why its getting 3 stars is because
-there is no multiplayer
-does not have legends of arana
It's a decent mix of classic CRPG and ARPG gameplay. It's a little quirky and a little repetitive, but mostly fun. I had to get some mods to make it look decent, but no further gameplay mods were necessary. I do like how the characters level up through their actions. You can give a wizard an axe, and using it will build up their strength. But that is not a great way to play it, as there are only a finite amount of enemies to grind on. So, leaning on a character's built-in strength is the better strategy. There is a curve to learning this quirkiness and which classes are better for the game, which caused me to have to restart the game after two chapters. But, I enjoyed its (mostly) linear style, when I could just shut my brain off and mash monsters. So, I do recommend this game, but only if you feel you are up for it.
A classic, love it.
I first played this game back when it pretty much first came out.. I still have the CDs and play through that means because of Compatibility issues, but if you can get this game to run, it's definitely worth playing through at least once.
old but gold
This game is the best game EVER!! I love it and I have played it for so long!
Single player will work fine, however Steam doesn't support the multiplayer anymore. So if you are wanting to get this game to play with friends, it will not work and unfortunately I don't see them fixing this issue at all. Do not get this game.
I bought this game on sale, so it was very cheap. At first I struggled to get it to run, but after lowering all of the graphic settings and changing the compatability of the exe file, it works.
It's a simple game where you run around and fight. You can follow the path or explore on your own. The graphics aren't pretty, the game is from 2002. I've heard that it can be hard on some pc's and I wonder if my pc will start to struggle after a while, but I paid so little for it that I don't care much.
its a fun game though once i saved the game and got off for the night when i went to log back on its not letting me load my save it just keeps crashing the game.
Been playing this game since I was maybe 6. It is a great game.
i have played this game for god knows how many hours back in the early 2000's and it is a brilliant game.
great to pop in for a nostalgia trip - works great on win11
it hasnt aged well quite like some other old games i've played recently, it is slow and so so easy to play, i think i could jerk off whilst playing this game its so easy to play now in this day and age. but it's still a timeless classic. You wont enjoy it if you havent played it before. But if you played it when it was new, you'll love jumping back in, even if its for only a few hours. totally worth it.
Works fine on my pc. Im on windows 11.
Classic ARPG. Unique Combat System. Some fiddling required to work.
This game annoyed me at first but then after getting past the initial hump became one of my favorites. Have yet to find a RPG game with a combat system that feels this fun and good. You give your party basic commands and they just execute, cutting down on a lot of micromanagement.
I remember having to do some research, download a third party patch to get it to run. But it was worth it.
Also was able to get the expansion working from a disk a friend gave me. Unfortunately the don’t sell the expansion anywhere now, so you have to google around to find the old version.
I played this game when I was younger and I've been having a great time jumping back into the game. Addictive loot collecting, intuitive combat systems, and visually interesting monsters
Older game but a lot of fun to play !!! Game is simple and easy to run and learn !!! I'm 72 and I love it !!! T Spath !!!!
It's Dungeon Siege. Enough said.
wish this game had a remake... its SOOO nostalgic
.
definitely shows its age now but for it what it was, it's fun enough
