So you love Tower Defense, you love First Person Shooters, and you want both at the same time? Well, we got you covered, Sentinels combines the two into an action packed game like no other. While your automated towers dutifully destroy enemies, you can use manual structures and special abilities to dismantle them from above, or jump into the fray and shoot them down yourself!
Key Features:
- More than 20 Structures, Weapons, and Specials - Diverse set of tools that’s growing all the time! Includes Flame Throwers, Lasers, Magnetic Bombs, Heat Waves, and the oh so cute Rift Wraith.
- 3 Game Modes - In Skyguard mode you’ll put down your gun to become a tactical master, Onslaught mode delivers relentless action with structures built for you, and Sentinels will demand you to bring all your reflexes and tactics to the table in the ultimate tower defense and FPS hybrid.
- Persistent Upgrades and Mods - Unlock a dizzying array of loadout options with mods for all item types. Boost critical damage, targeting range, and blast radius to name a few, so you can build the perfect kill zone.

This game had potential. But potential is nothing without updates. This hasn't been updated in years. When I asked the devs if this was still being worked on, I was told this was a passion project and not a first priority.
The devs seem like nice people, but they haven't produced the game they said they would. Overall, my experience with their product has been negative, as it hasn't delivered what was promised. Their store page indicated they expected the game to be released in 2019, however, it hasn't even been updated since then.
Frankly, games like this are the reason I don't buy Early Access anymore.
This is Rob Elam's game, and he did One Must Fall 2097, so I thought I should try this one.
It turned out to be satisfying all around! Turret won't reach enemies? Turn yourself into that one then FLY AND SHOOT!! And this is why it's the best turret defense I've ever played, it's so satisfying all around.
I highly recommend to play Story Mode first, because you will need the tutorial, otherwise no way you'll get it.
It feels a bit discontinued and it feels super pre-alpha, but I hope this game to succeed. :)
Pretty good. Just needs to be finished and bug fixed
I'm a huge Tower Defense fan, with many TDs being my most played games by a large margin. So I'm always on the lookout for a new one to scratch that itch. (I can only play DG2 so many times!) Unfortunately, many of them come up far short. Particularly the ones in Early Access. So I was hesitant to jump on Sentinels, even with a 50% off sale.
I'm so glad that I took a chance! Not only is it a very good (perhaps eventually even great) Tower Defense game by itself, but when you add in the FPS element it really shines. Even with Early Access the FPS implementation is smooth and responsive and fun to use. And even better, if you aren't into that sort of thing and just want a pure Tower Defense experience, there's a Skyguard mode where you can't enter FPS mode and get an "orbital railgun" to make up for the loss of firepower.
Now, there are still some rough spots and feature updates that need to be fleshed out, but the main reason for my positive review today is because the developers are very quick to respond to bugs posted in the Steam discussion group, and actively try to fix them as soon as possible. Many, many, many EA games seem like nothing but a cash grab and you never hear from the devs beyond random update notes and vague teases of nebulous feature upgrades. This is not one of those games. They want to make the game better, they want to fix bugs, and they seem open to discussion on a level not seen in most games. That right there is worth my money, even if I didn't get a good game out of it.
So that I don't look like nothing but a fanboi, I did mention that there are some things that still need to be worked on, and it isn't a perfect game. Right now the "augment" system is pretty rough and non-intuitive, but definitely has a lot of potential and adds some great features. The selection of different towers could have more variety, as right now I have a tendency to favor only a couple of towers and ignore the others, which is unfortunate. There are also two different "currencies" that you use to upgrade your towers during a level, and I think some balancing needs to be tweaked there, but even if it never changed again it is a very good system. And a bunch of story-related stuff still needs to be added, but what is there is top-quality.
In summary, the game isn't perfect yet, but it is well on its way, and I have great faith in the developers to actually finish the game and deliver a polished final product that is loads of fun to play. Unlike so many other EA titles that so many of us have been burned on previously.
EDIT (Sept. 2022): Well, don't I have egg on my face. Almost every single thing that I said that wasn't about the actual gameplay itself seems to have been wrong. That sucks. I had really high hopes for this game. Leaving my positive vote since that was how I felt at the time, and if I remember correctly the gameplay was a LOT of fun, it just needed more polish and more stuff. But yeah, don't I look like a big dummy now for being so upbead and positive about the future of the game?
I saw the post on Imgur about this game and it really sparked my interest. I've casually played tower defense games since I was pretty young and love the concept. I've never played one that also integrated the first-person aspect. I think that it is a great way to make the experience more exciting and feel like you are really in control of the strategy.
I haven't gotten very far yet, but I like the learning/tower progression in the beginning. It allowed me to learn the tower types and abilities a bit at a time so that I understood how to use each of them. As for the difficulty, I think it is dialed in really well. I'm playing on the easier one, but I wasn't getting perfect scores and sometimes would still fail a level. I think that is perfect. I've played some tower defense games where I surpass the last level and can keep playing in free mode, but i'm basically unbeatable and it got a little stale.
I've recommended this to a friend and hope that other people enjoy it as well. Nice work, guys.
I really enjoyed this game! Top review was clearly expecting way to much out of a game in alpha but I can understand because mechanics feel pretty solid. I am kinda miffed about endless mode ending on wave 101 but I don't think they have implemented actual scaling yet, just preprogrammed waves that get harder and harder until they cap out so It wasn't like I was going to die anytime soon. Overall Keep up the good work devs.
Saw this game advertised on Imgur of all places and figured hey that looks cool so I grabbed it and you know what, it is rather cool. Still kinda haphazard but I get that it being alpha still. A solid start and I hope to see where it goes from here.
If you like Tower Defence Games youll love this! The graphics are amazing as well! Its fast paced, a bit difficult but nothing you cant learn to deal with! The first person perspective is super fun! Its pretty entertaining to essentially headbutt incoming enemies off the path. Great game by some great people!
You don't know how frantic this TD can get until you're managing the map, zooming down to commander level to snipe small power armor troops, then back out to trigger AOE, and back down trying to pick off the one ship that cleared your turrets.
The mechanics are there already.
The graphics are great.
The updates are frequent.
I'm excited to see this one grow.
Fun hybrid of FPS/TD.
Great game !
I love Tower Defense games. There are a lot of them. Some are cheesy. Sentinals is not finished yet but already it is one of the best. And the ability to jump into a tower and do some FPS havoc adds a whole level of depth to this genre. To boild it all down. This game is damn fun!
once you start to get the hang of it, its really fun!....well made game...keep up the good work!
EARLY ACCESS REVIEW:
Please note that this review is based on an incomplete build of the game, so it may become outdated as improvements continue to be implemented.
Sentinels plays unlike any tower defence game I have played previously. Where as the majority of them I played from the start of the genre involved waiting for the cash to roll in to add new weapons/upgrade them, they felt somewhat passive. Alternative FPS/TPS games such as Sanctum and the Orcs Must Die games provide a more active gameplay mode, which I prefer, although at times it could get frustrating when a wave starts on the opposite side of the map and you have to rush to get there to set up traps/towers etc.
Sentinels provides a unique compromise where you can jump to any tower on the map to provide extra firepower, but you do need to be strategic in where you place them, otherwise you might have a wave get past and you do not have the funds to build a tower to take them out. You need to watch your ammo usage along with reload/targeting to ensure you take advantage of your extra fire power effectively. Additionally, towers can be upgraded in the traditional TD 3 level manner along with out of session upgrades to customize your play. This is done through money/upgrades through waves by clearing waves successfully, leveling up, as well as shooting loot crates that drop through gameplay. This provides as lot of variety to gameplay along with goals to continue playing. It is possible to play solely by building towers, however the gameplay feels much more engaging jumping in and out of towers while toggling specialty towers to slow, deal AoE damage, or activate mines.
There are 3 groups of units that I have encountered so far in the game: land-based units, which follow the road, air based units, which follow a specified route through the air OR over the road, and "roaming" units, which weave a path between the ground obstacles. Among the different groups are several unit types with varying HP and abilities.
The current things that need improvement are mainly streamlining gameplay through UI improvements and clearer explaination of how the mods/upgrades work. While you can equip different weapons based on character/attack type, the descriptions do not clearly help explain how one would compare to another. And while a power upgrade gives a percentage-based damage increase, you do not have values to determine how much damage it currently does and if it means you need 1 less or 5 less attacks on a given unit. This can easily be remedied by improving the UI to allow you to compare currently equipped weapons to another or to show how much a given mod/upgrade will improve. I find having the numbers helps to best determine what would fit my play style, given the multitude of options.
Pros:
- more proactive gameplay than traditional TD games
- RPG elements with additional tower types, out of game upgrades/mods to suit gameplay to your style
- unique elements on a per-map basis that add variety to gameplay (explosive crystals/mines/cloaking enemy units, etc)
- story elements that delve into the world
- easter eggs to the One Must Fall franchise (previous series developed by Rob Elam) (*I think ??!)
Cons:
- UI needs improvements to help clarify exactly how mods/upgrades/weapons compare
- adding ability to look up enemies to know their abilites/weaknesses would help with determining loadout
- add wave indicators so you can easily determine what unit types are following what attack route
I'm overall pleased with the gameplay so far but tightening up the UI and general readability will greatly improve the quality-of-life for new players to get up the speed due to the added complexity of the RPG elements.
So far.. the game is decently basic ..but still some fun to be had here and it looks like they are coming up with more new fun ideas..i do recommend..
