Now the bandits roam the roads and wild animals roam the fields. The only safety can be found in smaller villages, where groups of people have banded to work together in order to survive. The relations between the different sentient races are very marginal and fragile. Some have been at long conflicts with one another, at times erupting into full blown wars. A holy Order of Atonement has been trying to keep the people together, but even their influence is limited to a handful of villages. And to top it all off, many believe a “Vindicator” will walk the land one day as a punisher of all the sins and bring forth a swift end upon it.
That Day Has Come.
Features
- A large, decadent, dark fantasy world with a new take on concepts of angels and demons.
- Two different protagonist teams, each one with its own point of view on the same story. Their paths repeatedly converge and diverge as they attempt to accomplish their own goals, occasionally antagonizing one another.
- Unconventional way of unlocking new skills: each character possesses all of their special abilities from the start. However, many are locked by high energy cost. Increase max Energy by any means necessary to get access to those skills.
- Strategically manage your energy in battles: use lots of low cost skills in a row, or use a high cost skill and wait for the overall energy to recharge.
- Two difficulty modes: Normal and Challenging. Normal is streamlined so to allow most people to complete the game and witness the story. Challenging is for those seeking blood, sweat, sorrow, and death.
- Turn-based battles and a variety of boss fights which require strategy to be beaten, especially in Challenging mode.
- A variety of weapons, armour, and accessories, allowing customization of the equipment on playable characters to fit to your playstyle.

nothing special
ASoT is worth the money if you are an old school dark fantasy rpg lover. The atmosphere was done well with maps, music and story. The combat was a different take on the genre as far as skills go, but I enjoyed it. The game has 2 story arcs so there is some hours here you can enjoy. I have beaten the Nail arc only so far but am excite to get into Elleria story soon.
Gameplay for reference- https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLJG_BhyhUPRLc3SkVHPXvOwglIpda3H8c
Standard RPG Maker game,
poor graphics and wonky controls.
Walking Simulator, as always move left right repeatedly to trigger encounters,
Two sets of storyline, Nails and Elleria, each interlinking but with different parties, style and adventure.
A grind for Exps and credits till comfortable in beating enemies if chasing the Challenge mode.
Save regularly and smartly at certain points of game for different endings.
Decent story.
Game for those with Patience.
I played 20 hours of this game but I just can't bring myself to bother with it beyond that.
It's a decent enough game sure but it's a basically your typical generic RPG maker game at it's core with some custom graphics and a dark gothic style atmosphere with a rather unique story but it's unfortuantly paired with an ugly and tired RPG maker game.
The boring turn based combat present in the majority of these games is here once again only now it's paired with some very dark muddy graphics and mostly generic music.
Ugly blocky characters cover the screen and the environments are constantly littered with useless objects you can't interact with.
It's 2022, and the market is literally saturated with video games which means you have many better games to spend your time on than this.
Life is precious, choose how you spend it wisely.
This game simply does not hold up to anything these days and is not worth you time.
Atonement: Scourge of Time is a fantastic game, with a unique atmosphere I haven't seen anywhere else. It's a great experience, and one that keeps me coming back every few years.
The game is somewhat of an enigma. It seems deceptively simple at times, with its dull, subdued colours and dated graphics, but this only adds to the atmosphere of the game. The world is harsh, unforgiving, and dangerous, with an overall feeling of hopelessness to it. Angels and demons fight, while humans are left somewhere in the middle, to fend for themselves.
The music is truly memorable, and has quite a few catchy tunes that I think of from time to time. The boss combat song and theme to the abandoned Fort Caskell are my favourites. The music is very melancholy, further adding to the dark atmosphere of the game.
Combat is quick and easy to grasp, yet there is plenty of room for strategy and choice. Do you give your energy increasing potions to your healer, or your damage dealer? The fact that you have two parties to pick from is interesting, too, and adds to replayability. Nail's party is my favourite, and his story shows the most growth, but Elleria's journey had its moments, too.
Atonement: Scourge of Time is well worth its cost, and it's a remarkable game that's left a lasting impression upon me.
This is one of those games that needs a "It depends" rating.
If you are looking for a westernized Final Fantasy 1 clone, with non-anime graphics, then this is 100% the game for you.
If you are looking for a more modern jrpg style game with good animations, newer graphics, and action oriented combat, then this is in NO WAY the game for you.
I have a feeling this game will not appeal to many except those looking for a FF clone. Im not one of them. I dont feel the game should be down voted though, because it does what it sets out to do well. So I do recommend it to those players looking for that type of game.
A large, decadent, dark fantasy world made with RPG maker.
+ Two different protagonist teams
+ Storyline
+ Character design
- Linear
I received this game from a humble bundle. I don't know why i'm saying that, i just thought i'd add that.
So I may have had low expectations for this game when i first started it, but it all changed about midway into this game.
I was going through my library of games from top to bottom and I got to this game and told myself i'd play it til the end, but I had to stop. I may finish it later but right now i'm kinda burnt out.
You start off the game as either a dude or a chick. They're storylines differ somehow but I haven't gotten that far yet. I chose the dude so let's go with that for right now and take my review so far with a grain of sand.
Nail is your typical rogue character. You start the story off as him and he happens to be one of four characters that you'll eventually accumulate as the story progresses. After some time you'll have a Tank, Mage, Rogue, and Cleric in your party.
Now even though I only maybe paid a dollar for this game, I gotta say that the most intriguing part of this game is the combat. It is very interesting how the devs made each character's strengths and weaknesses as well as the bosses.
For example.
The rogue character almost 100% of the time hits the faster enemies, while someone like the Tank or Cleric will have trouble hitting their mark.
The tank character can "armor break" enemies with tougher skin or shell, where as physical attacks from other characters will be nerfed.
I'm sure there's other stuff i've missed but I can't think of any examples right now, so just keep in mind that the combat is something that will keep you on your toes.
What I don't like is the characters. Their development is poorly developed to say the least. So is the story. At the very beginning you're asked to do a mission in return for freedom from your cell, and you accept. Then after the mission your character is asked to do something else (obviously to keep the plot going) but he was like "nah fam I already did what you asked, so i'm free." But the elder of the village pushes you with a quite literally "But ur bro is in dat village" to which the MC reluctantly accepts and magically becomes determined with seeing things through. These characters are all duct taped with a sob story too. I guess you're supposed to feel sorry for them, but i didn't buy into it.
I'm not saying I could have done a better job, but this was executed poorly.
I've yet to finish this game though and I'll most likely be editing this in the future.
I believe if the devs focused on plot more then combined with the awesome combat system, then their next product would be something really cool.

TLDR: Tries to have a central hub. Fantasy creatures. Instance based adventuring. However the encounter design is lacking. Game lacks immersion. Best avoided.
I gave up on this flavorless amateur effort of a turn based tactical RPG after about three hours. Everything was underpar but it was there and more or less working. This is a game. Just not a very fun or immersive one.
Spent multiple hours in steely determination to see what this game had on offer. Eventually the lack of credibility in the world setting, the scripted eye rolling dialogue, uninspired epic arc, the orcs that act like human, the demons that have ninja sprites, the multiple items you find but cannot equip on anyone like cloaks and rings and whatnot, and the boss fights that heal all your damage, multi-attack your whole party AND stun. The sprites are fairly ugly, most of the level design is linear except for the occasional one screen optional area. The cheap 3D portraits of humans with recolored faces and weird greek masks as orcs didnt make sense. The so called angel race look nothing like angels and just look like reskinned guys.
Atonement is a solid RPG - it's a bit short (though having two story paths helps with that) and a bit straight-forward, but it does a lot of things right.
First and foremost, combat is excellent - the system of regenerating mana works quite well to encourage skill use while still requiring careful management to dish out healing and damage as needed. The skillsets of each party member (I used Nail's group, for what it's worth) are distinct and complement each other and their characters nicely. It's the sort of combat where dying a time or two to a boss feels fair and almost enjoyable because it just means you need to work out a better strategy.
The story and characters are decently well-written, and the plot, while nothing too remarkable, is interesting enough.
The quality of life - so to speak - is also nice: you can save freely and healing points and shops are placed reasonably.
All in all, the pieces fit together nicely and it's an enjoyable RPG - as I write this it's available for less than a dollar, which is an exceptional deal.
(I grabbed the studio pack a while back - I believe this was already included, but I'll mark that I received it for free since I didn't buy it specifically.)
If Legacy of Kain was was a JRPG but you could also replay it as Raziel.
The soundtrack is excellent.
Also this devs other game City of Chains is pretty good.
This is actually quite an enjoyable game for the price, alot of these RPGmaker games are a bit samey and cheesy but this one is well thought out and a little dark.
You actually need quite a bit of strategy in the battles and you must use your allies' powers and abilities wisely, instead of just mashing the space bar numbly in order to get it over with just to get on with whatever it was you were doing. The story did grab me and I like the way you can play from two different perpectives with differing stories. For an Indie RPG to keep you busy for a few hours it's good.
This is a really fun RPG, with a great story. You can actually play the game twice because the 2 different starting characters actually have totally different quests and visit different location on the world map. One of them is a climber (warrior) and can scale high walls and vertical cliffs. The other is a floater (mage) that can just glide in the air and cross deep chasms.
Furthermore, the 2 main characters recruit 2 different groups of 3 NPCs and all their skill sets are different too. Hence it is a pleasure to play the game twice and understand the complicated and yet intertwinning storyline where they meet each other and kill different monsters even though they face the same antagonist. These 2 starting characters will even have a chance to help one another too.
I love the combat mechanics of this game as it is also interesting. If you play the challenging mode, the bosses are extremely difficult and you might have to grind a bit too. To get every achievements in the game will require you to do substantial amount of fun work.
I highly recommend this game and am looking forward to playing the sequel which is already out.
Short, simple, laid back, casual rpg. Only needed to get to level 20 and about 4 hours of gameplay and beat the game. Got the game as part of a package so it was worth the price.
Im only about an hour into this game, and I have to say, when I first started it I was like "meh, I dunno if Ill enjoy this or not." Then after I head into the first area, kill the first little side boss, Im instantly reminded of Final Fantasy 3 for snes I used to play when I was a child. So far this game is great and brings back a lot of fond memories. I would definitely recommend this game to any old timey rpg players out there!
I am already well acquainted with the creativity of the maker of this game and the engine he uses. And nope I buyed that game in the Astronomic Game Bundle so no Idea why it says I received it for free.
Within traditional classic rpg style canevas, this games with two path (yeah replayability!).
Made me wince and smile and kinda inspired me in the end. I was on edge most time of the gameplay.
Tought pretty short and linearI reccomend that enjoyable game for all of its assets uses and how everything that had been staged to make a nice little world to two nice little stories we might not forget soon.
Despite few unhindering bugs, It is hard to pause the game or not make a lotta saves!
Also, thought I never tried, if you are a story driven player, apparently you can go alltrough the story without even a single battle. :P The author also warns when to save on another slot. Just in case!
Bought this as part of a low price bundle and was really surprised by it. The game plays like an old school final fantasy with turn based combat. one and a half hours in and I am really enjoying it. Well worth a purchase.
Really quite a good game, It is a full fleshed out world with fun interesting combat and player dynamics.
The characters and the world they crafted is immersive and memorable, the combat is fun and interesting, and there are two campaigns to play. Admittedly the campaigns are really similar, but still extra content.
Definitely worth the price!
The game ain't all that bad, it has some good RPG elements, the 2 character interwined storylines it's a win for sure, but for me, that fact that the game is not prepared to be played in big windows or in fullscreen is a big downside. Plus the graphics are not the type I enjoy the most.
Refreshing. No little Anime sprites and cookie cutter RPG Maker type of game. Don't get me wrong, I do enjoy those type of games. However, Atonement was such a welcome break from the typical RPG Maker market of games. Good boss battles that actually makes the gamer think of using some of those skills you gained while leveling up.
Atonement has a good story line that is told through the eyes of two different characters (each has their own campagin with different quests and unique bosses). A gamer can tell that Atonement was made with true heart and care. The developer should be very proud of this game.
ATONEMENT:SCOURGE OF TIME IS:
_A RPG game with an original story of Angels&Demons
_Not too long, not too short
_Sadly a game with low budget
_Very well written, the story gave me chills
_Sometimes frustating as you don't have a map
_Ruled by turn based combats, well made by the way especially on bosses
_Enchanting your ears with sweet songs (Some are epic!)
_Granted with some good side quests without the stupid purpose to find the playboy's magazine to Brian... xD
_A bit linear
_A RPG maker's game (The first one i actually love this much)
_A success about its characters especially your fellowship, not easy to forget them as they have such good story
_Cheap for the enjoyment and the content it gets
ATONEMENT:SCOURGE OF TIME ISN'T:
_Pretty graphicaly but the actual art is really nice and totally appropriate
_An heroic-fantasy world, forget the butterflies... It's dark fantasy!
_A role-playing game with poor background, everything is detailled, useful, inspired and tasty as a good book you would eat
_Proposing customizations enough, but you'll get few build's choices for your characters with the wearing stuff
_Easy neither hard
_Boring with useless and repetitives fights (No grinding is needed)
_Voice-acted
_An open world
_Playable once as you may play same main's story with another point of view, it changes everything including the quests, dungeons, bosses, even exploration and many other things!
_Asking you to making choices
_The best RPG ever but it has impressed myself hugely
Ok, if you would tell me years ago i'd enjoying this much a RPG maker's game... i would laugh at you, but the sword has fell with its cutting's two-side and this game is truly a gem from one man's work, hats off!
I really enjoy playing this game, I got it on sale for 15% off which isn't a lot but I bought it even though there were no reviews, the game looked enjoyable and it really is! You get a choice between two paths, one of Nail and one of Elleria each have a different team which aides them and they seem to be enemies. I guess you could say it's a choice of Good or Evil, but I haven't played far enough in to know if that is the case. I would recommend this game to anyone who loves a cheap and entertaining game, as long as you don't mind the graphics, the actual fighting is fun. Gashrun is love, Gashrun is life.
8.5/10 I Really Enjoy This Game.
EDIT: I completed the game and it is indeed enjoyable, I have now started a new save as Nail. ^-^
