Rivals
Zetterburn, a son of the ruling family of the Firelands, is an experienced and hardened warrior. In battle, Zetterburn uses no weapons except for his razor-sharp claws and ability to control flame.
- BURN DAMAGE - Zetterburn's special attacks can set opponents on fire, causing them additional damage over time.
- WILD FIRE - Zetterburn's Down Special places flames on the stage. These flames stay for a period of time, burning any opponents who come in contact with them.
- FIRE AMP - When an opponent is burning, Zetterburn's Strong Attacks can absorb the flames and launch the burned enemy twice as far, making for an effective killing blow.
Orcane is a playful trickster, notorious for escaping even the most precarious of situations. He can transform into water and confuse enemies with a spray of bubbles.
- PUDDLE TELEPORTATION - Orcane creates a puddle with his Neutral Special or Down Special. He can then teleport to his puddle using his Up Special as a powerful vertical blow or an effective recovery when launched off the stage.
- BUBBLE EVAPORATION - Orcane can turn his puddle into a pillar of bubbles with his Down Special to trap enemies above the puddle.
- WATER AMP - When standing on top of his puddle, Orcane can consume the water underneath him to perform powerful Strong Attacks with far greater range and knockback.
The youngest trainee in the history of the Air Academy, Wrastor has never lived by anyone's rules but his own. Currently an Aerial Ace for the Air Armada, Wrastor is wrecking havoc among the Armada's enemies and generals alike.
- WINGED FLIGHT - Wrastor can jump 4 times, making him incredible at controlling the air and recovering from the toughest falls even when things look grim.
- WIND CURRENT - Wrastor can create a Wind Current with his Forward Special, allowing him to move faster within it and chase his targets more effectively.
- AERIAL ACE - Wrastor performs his charged Strong Attacks in the air instead of on the ground, a first for this genre.
Kragg is a defender of the colossal Aetherian Forest. Deliberate and loyal, he is one of the infamous Wall Runners who patrol the Rock Wall. Unlike other Wall Runners, Kragg has the legendary ability to control the earth with his will.
- ROCK HURL - Kragg can pull a rock out of the ground and hurl it at opponents. After it leaves his hands, the rock becomes a solid piece of stage that either Kragg or other players can break.
- DEFENSE BALL - Kragg can curl into a ball and roll toward enemies. Although he can be damaged while in ball form, he cannot be knocked away.
- EARTH PILLAR - Kragg can summon a pillar of earth to his feet regardless of where he is. If Kragg is about to fall to his death, this move can quickly turn his situation around.
Forsburn is the disgraced, eldest son of the Firelands' ruling family. After being condemned by the Fire Council and his own brother, Forsburn found refuge in a group of outsiders who had rejected the flame and mastered the way of smoke.
- SMOKE SCREEN - Forsburn can use his Neutral Special to obscure the battlefield allowing Forsburn to remain hidden inside a cloud of smoke.
- DECOY - Through his Forward Special, Forsburn can create a smoke facsimile of himself that can attack opponents. The illusory Forsburn breaks into smoke after being hit by a single attack.
- CONSUME/COMBUST - By using his Down Special, Forsburn can consume his smoke clouds back into his body. After consuming three clouds, Forsburn is charged up and can use Down Special again to combust: knocking opponents away at high speed.
Maypul is the self-appointed Guardian of the Aetherian Forest. She commands fearful respect throughout the forest for her unhesitating vigilantism. She uses her agility to trap any unknown intruders before they even realize she is there.
- WATCHER'S MARK - Maypul can use her Seeds or her Watcher's Dash to mark opponents, making them susceptible to her following attacks.
- WRAPPED UP - After marking her targets, Maypul can use her Strong Attacks or her trusty Plant to wrap marked opponents in place allowing her to follow up with another attack.
- SLING SHOT - Maypul can use her vines to sling toward marked opponents, allowing her to elude attacks and quickly close distances.
Absa is a famed engineer and martialist of the Elders of the Air Alliance. Despite the laws of the Elders, Absa secretly developed storm techniques in the caves of the Archai mountains.
- CLOUD CONTROL - Absa can place a cloud using her Neutral or Forward Special. This cloud hangs in the air until Absa bursts it by tapping her Neutral Special and knocking enemies away.
- THUNDER BOLT - Absa can charge her Neutral Special to create a powerful lightning blast that connects her to her cloud. All opponents caught between the two will be knocked away at high speeds.
- CONDENSED STORM - Absa focuses the power of a lightning bolt to the tip of her hoof. If she can line up one of her aerial kicks perfectly, she unleashes great power.
Etalus is a legendary warrior in his native land. He is one of the last surviving members of the Harbor Guard and uses the power of ice to augment his massive strength.
- HOME ICE ADVANTAGE: Etalus can use his Forward Special or Forward Tilt to freeze the ground beneath him in order to slide across on the icy surface.
- ARMORED UP: When standing on ice, Etalus can use his Neutral Special to absorb the ice and create ice armor around his body.
- AVALANCHE: Etalus can use his Down Special to shatter all nearby ice, instantly freezing any enemies who are standing on it.
Ranno was known as be a feared martial artist who trained under wise monks. But now he prefers to peacefully protect his swampy homeland. When he has no other option, you can see glimpses of his rapid and deliberate strikes.
- POISON STACKS - Ranno’s Specials Strong Attacks and Jab Combo apply up to four poisonous stacks on his opponents. These stacks damage opponents when they attack and can be removed by hitting Ranno.
- TOXIC TRAP - Ranno’s Neutral Special and Down Special can place his opponents in a Toxic Bubble Trap that makes it easier for Ranno to combo. The length of time in the trap depends on the number of Poison Stacks on the opponent.
- POISON SPIN - Ranno’s recovery onto stage has three options. He begins it with a Poison Lunge that is quick and knocks opponents away. After the lunge he can quickly Poison Kick down onto the stage with another quick strike. Or he can use the Posion Spin to fire out an array of Posion Darts in many directions.
Clairen is a seasoned warrior from a distant future where the heroes of flame vanish and never return. After being defeated by a tyrannical and ever-living emperor, she travels back in time in order to defeat him.
- IONIZED TIP - Unlike the other soldiers from the future, Clairen manipulates her blade to be two-toned. The end of Clairen's sword is super-charged, allowing her to stun enemies who are hit precisely with the tip.
- PLASMA ECHO - Clairen dashes forward with her Side Special to quickly escape. The deadly plasma resonance left behind can damage enemies and even KO opponents with its sweet spot.
- ENERGY FIELD - Performing a Down Special right before an attack hits Clairen will trigger her energy field. This field damages and pushes other Rivals away while nullifying all projectiles that try to enter it.
Sylvanos is the heart of the Aetherian Forest. A rageful deity, Sylvanos has only a single goal - to expand the forest over all of Aether. Unfortunately, the great Rock Wall traps the spirit as he patrols the forest’s floor. Sylvanos leads the plant life in the forest looking for ways to expand his dominance.
- UNTAMED GROWTH - Sylvanos spreads grass as he runs around. The grass leaves if Sylvanos is away from it for too long. Sylvanos can use Down Special to call Plants Rise and damage any opponents standing on grass.
- SEED SHOT - Sylvanos’ Neutral Special fires a deadly seed into the air. If it hits an opponent it will lock them in place, but if it reaches the ground then it will plant a flower that maintains a permanent fixture of grass on that ground or platform until it is destroyed.
- BURROW - Sylvanos can dig into solid ground and reappear by digging out from a different position. If he digs under grass he can pop out with a strong bite attack to KO enemies off the top of the screen.
Elliana is a snake from the burrows in the Eastern Wastelands who has always dreamt of flying. After her dreams of joining the Air Armada were crushed by an intolerant captain, she sought the aid of Ayala, a brilliant engineer. Together they built a steam-powered flying machine and with it, Elliana now plans to destroy the armada that rejected her.
- OVERHEAT - Elliana’s ship heats up when she uses specials or her unique double jump that allows her to hover. Once overheated she can no longer use her specials or hover, becoming more vulnerable to her enemies.
- LETTING OFF STEAM - Elliana can perform Strong Attacks to expel steam away from her ship, lowering her Overheat bar. The steam can also catch opponents or be blown away by attacks. When she is overheated, her strong attacks let off a powerful explosion instead that can KO opponents.
- ABANDON SHIP - Elliana can use her Up Special to abandon ship even when overheated. She launches herself high into the air and her ship explodes. Be careful, as she is very vulnerable while outside of her ship and she must rebuild it upon landing on the ground.
Ori and Sein are from the hit indie game Ori and the Blind Forest and they bring their skills to the test in Rivals of Aether. While Ori works to Bash, Stomp and Glide his way to victory, Sein can use the Spirit Flame or the Charged Flame to put enemies between a rock and a hard place.
- SPIRIT FLAME – Sein follows Ori around the battlefield. Ori can tap Neutral Special to have Sein quickly fire a Spirit Flame from wherever Sein is. Ori can hold Neutral Special to have Sein use the Charged Flame.
- BASH – Ori can use Down Special to Bash nearly anything in Rivals of Aether – from characters to projectiles to rocks and plants. Ori can also move around the stage by bashing the Light Grenade that is thrown by using Forward Special.
- TAG TEAM – When Ori and Sein are close enough, Ori can use Strong Attacks to initiate tag team combos. These Strong Attacks have more powerful properties as Sein assists Ori for a more devastating blow.
Shovel Knight has learned a lot during Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove and he brings those skills with him to Rivals of Aether. Shovel Knight swings, digs and shovel drops his way through the Rivals roster. He does it all while collecting treasure which he can use to purchase upgrades to give him the upper hand on the battlefield.
- TREASURE HUNTER – Shovel Knight’s attacks knock coins and gems out of his opponents. He can collect these to increase his treasure. By taunting, he summons Chester and can use his treasure to purchase either Relics or Armors to improve his fighting ability.
- SHOVEL DROP – Shovel Knight’s signature ability is his Down Air in Rivals of Aether. With this attack he can strike his opponents from above and bounce off their heads. Hold the attack button to keep the Shovel beneath him. He can also bounce off objects and projectiles!
- EXPERT FISHERMAN – Shovel Knight’s down special is the Fishing Rod. Use it off the side of the stage to fish up some treasure. Time it correctly and fish up a Treasure Rock, but time it perfectly and get a Golden Fish.

Great with friends but the ai is easy to beat after awhile, better with mods
Very likely the best platform fighter on the steam market curently. Pretty high skill celling and lots of freedom in it's gameplay. When it came out people said there wasn't a lot of content for casual but with the steam workshop characters it has kind of became the MUGEN of platform fighters which can be very fun with friends, the online playerbase is still quite active too and I've made a few steam friends thanks to it.
With the release of Rivals 2 I don't know how this game will stand the test of time but I think it's a nice addition to any platform fighters lover's library nonetheless, because that's the kind of gameplay that I feel will stand the test of time.
This is actually one of the first few games I pirated cause I had no money at the time, bought if after cause it had no online mode, I'd say that was a pretty nice decision lol, thanks for the memories RoA. o7
An addicting, fast paced fighting platformer that further ropes you in with its massive community workshop behind it allowing you to play as any character from any form of media
Always how I wanted to play Smash Bros. Everything about this game is perfect... The way it was amazingly handcrafted to perfection, the characters, the stages, EVERYTHING, it just feels so right. Characters such as Ronald McDonald, YandereDev, and most importantly... Waluigi, its just how I always wanted to play it, Smash Bros. doesn't even stand a chance against this masterpiece, they wouldn't even think of adding such amazing characters like that, don't even get me started on the stages, its a chef kiss almost. Its just perfection, nothing less.
I loved playing this game -- I just bought it because I love pixel art as well as super smash bros. It's definitely worth the money. Obviously it's not quite as big as super smash bros, but I'm so impressed by what was done with such a small team. I played the whole "story mode" which is similar to SSB, and love it.
Fun with mods. Look at the mods now. If there are some that look fun to you then there but if there is not then I would not recommend. I think its funner then smash but maybe thats just me. If you like smash you will probably enjoy this game. If I could time travel again I would get in on sale instead of full price but thats up too you if you want to.
this game is pretty fun i just play for casual with one of my mates after playing smash since as a tiny lad this game along qith brawlhalla (which makes me get extreme high blood pressure at times) has made me get back to fighting games and platform fighting games in general its good if you have the lads to play it with its an optional game along with brawlhalla if you dont have any nintendo stuff at home atm lotta combos and dodging sadly no block button (brawlhalla also has that rubbish) but this one play for fun and casual if you want the compettive side try brawlhalla you may hate it to death though
ever seen modded smash bros with a bajillion characters that would/could not make it in? well, this is it. i've personally played like none of the vanilla/singleplayer content honestly, i was in it for the steam workshop from day one, and honestly? it can be worth just for that, so long as you have a friend to meme around with. very good as a party game, arguably better than smash with the sheer unbalanced variety. the community is filled with talented people, and i don't think rivals 2's launch will kill this, cuz i hear that one is veeeerry competitive-oriented, as opposed to this.
smash bros is better if you ignore cost but even then this game is close competition. infinite creativity, a pretty good base roster, great practice mode, better online than Smash, and wavedashing??? what more could you ever want!
This Game is honestly great from the great pixel art to game design and also i love there's a workshop which is a great idea
if you like smash bros this is literally that game but you can add mods and play as anyone. For example pikachu and goku could be fighting while ronald mcdonald is watching you can do anything in this game
Only play this game for the workshop, this game is the best smash-like ever made if you utilize the workshop. Never buy a smash bros game ever again, this game has Egg-Man and he can say that he will piss on the moon.
loved how modable it is. would like a tutorial on how to add my own characters/make my own characters
Great game very worth the price, every character is so incredibly unique from the others
although wish the money actually had more uses
Probably one of the best smash-style fighting games out there. If you liked super smash bros. melee, much of those mechanics are brought back in this game. The game if chock of full of features that are helpful. One such example is that in the character creation menu, you have the option to play test the character in the selection window so you can get a feel for the character before you even start the match. And speaking of characters, each character has a unique move set that is well designed and fun. If you want more characters and stages, steam workshop is supported. There's a lot of characters and stages on the workshop, many of which are high quality. And there's also joke characters too if you want that. My favorite character off the steam workshop is Jerma985, no joke he's actually well designed and fun as hell.
The Best and Only fighting game you need. No skill required. INFINITE REPLAY!

This game is really good I like the characters in the roster and to make it better you can add almost anybody you can think of i never thought i'd see ao oni fighting weegee or ronald mcdonald vs obama
the greatest non-smash platform fighter! (besides Rivals 2 lol)
The base cast is super fun to play, but the main star (In my opinion) is the workshop
You think Smash Ultimate was the ultimate crossover (Platform) fighting game? Try Rivals of Aether workshop. If a character, show, game, ect. exists, there's most likely a RoA mod of it (and of course you can just mod one in yourself if there isn't.)
Unlike Smash Brothers, this game has no stupid shields, grabs, or ledges. You just get right down to business and smack each other. Rivals enlightened me to the fact that these mechanics were never meant to be in platform fighters in the first place. In this game, your defense is instead your movement. And if you do want to shield an opponent's incoming attack, your only option is a well-timed parry that can be hard punished if it is whiffed. Watch high level gameplay of Rivals and you will see how aggressive and dynamic it is, with your creativity in your movement being a huge part of what sets the best player's apart. And unlike something like smash bros melee which is a freak accident of a competitive masterpiece, this game was built from the ground up with competition in mind, so all of the advanced tech is easy to input and emphasized in the design. With Rivals 2 introducing shields, ledges, grabs, crouch cancel, and other mechanics from smash to reach a larger audience, I feel that this game still fills a very unique niche among platform fighters.
Very fun game. I like the mechanics, balancing and character designs,
i definitely recommend playing this game if you like smash bros or any other cross-platform fighter games. This game carried me through my high school years and through COVID. Just recently played this game and it reminded that this game is truly a work of art.
An extremely fun game that is like smash on PC. Excellent controls and fluid gameplay. While there are significantly less characters than smash, I personally find them way more interesting and fleshed out. If the few really good cast members provided aren't enough, theres a massive amount of fun modded characters as well.
Just leaving a review for this game in anticipation for RoA 2's release. I love this game and I've been a big fan since I first played it in 2017. It's been so great to see how its improved over the years with the new characters, rollback netcode, definitive edition content and so forth.
It has a lot of character and I really feel that through the SNES/GBA inspired aesthetics. The game feel is really nice and I like the unique mechanics, such as the parry, wall jumps and fast falling combos. Wave dashing feels really good to do in this game as well.
I'm also a big fan of the work flashygoodness has done for the soundtrack. It's a great chiptune OST with strong use of motif with differing styles for each stage + mood. I'm glad to see him return for RoA 2's soundtrack, alongside the rest of Resoforce.
For playing PvP battles, I say get RoA 2 once that comes out. But if you're looking for more content beyond that, I'd say the first game still has a decent bit to offer. There's a number of characters with unique playstyles that I love playing, such as Absa, Etalus and Pomme who haven't been added to 2 at this stage. Abyss Endless and Tetherball are a lot of fun, especially with friends. There's also some robust character tutorials, a basic story mode and expansive Steam Workshop support, which haven't been added to the second game yet.
I'll still be revisiting this game from time to time and I'm looking forward to the full release of 2. Highly recommended.
Pretty decent. I'd personally recommend you to play Super Smash Bros Melee on an emulator with Slippi, or Project M, but this is fine too. Rivals 2 is coming, so probably best to wait and play that instead though.
Fun while it lasted, this game is going away due to rivals 2
(The Fighting Game Stigma)
liked all of the mods/ workshop stuff very fun game you should get it
Unplayable lag in friendly matches unless it chooses not to, runs fine in local games.
This game is amazing for killing time, and you can get custom characters to play against people when you feel the official characters get boring, pretty much an (almost) never ending game
i've been playing this game since early access, when i was in high school. i have the gameboy skins to prove it. i've never been the most serious player and it's been a few years since i last played it a lot but i can say ive seen a lot of history. the old intro movie... the patch where maypul neutral b did knockback... the patch where they replaced maypul's down air with a lame multihit... when they added shovel knight...
consistently this game has ruled really hard. it's peam. play it
i really enjoy this game, not only because of the unique combat, but for the actual astonishing pixel art and animation style, i love seeing some of the animls jump around my screen, it makes me so aroused
It's fun for a while, gameplay is like Jump Super/Ultimate Stars.
I absolutely love this fuckin game. This is the kinda game I've always wanted, a fighting game like Smash Bros except I'm not restricted by Copyright and IPs as to who I can play as, you have the base roster who's already sick as hell, with the bonus characters Shovel Knight and Ori, with WORKSHOP COMPATIBILITY, means I now have an endless roster of characters I can play as that'll always keep me entertained. Try the game and you will not regret it for the life of you, cause i sure as hell don't.
bro we can add waluigi to "super smash brothers". actually though the workshop mode if so fun
smash without the anti mod nintendo ninjas. also i used to spam grabs in smash but this game fixed that. 900/5 stars
Upsides:
- Large roster of characters
- Every character is viable, a very balanced game
- Soundtrack is great
- Combat is really fun
- Fantastic customization and mod support
- Has story-mode, PvE, PvP, etc
- It's Smash but better
- Mollo
Downsides:
- You cannot date Mollo
- Please
As a Smash Bros Ultimate fan, and someone who enjoys both casual and competitive. This is a amazing game for both types of players. The roster may not be 100% balance but they all are great and really fun to play as not 100% but they are pretty balanced. The movement is very fast paced and it makes it lots of fun. There is some characters who have similar moves like a character with Pikachu and Bowser.Jr moves. But they are not the same and have a different play style with variety of moves. It is just fun to see a similarity. The base roster is overall great and online is pretty active with both casual and rank matches. Like usual too you can choose time or stock rule set including teams. The max is 4-players only though but there is always some chaos.
Now for the Casual the stages are great but there is a 2nd option for the stages called Aether. This turns on the hazards on the stages and it can have enemies to fight off or anything on the stage that you have to deal with, It is like Smash Bros hazzard stages which is fun. What I love so much about this game is the modding community with the Steam Workshop. It is so simple to use as you do not have to mess with files and do anything complicated.
The Workshop is one of the reasons alone to buy this game, The roster only has 18 characters with 2 guess characters. Ori and Shovel Knight. But Workshop can go up to 2,000 unique characters. You can download characters like the Smash Bros Ultimate to see there move set changes or see them in fast paced combat. Or any dream character you had that never made it into Smash Bros Ultimate. Or anything extremely random like Ronald McDonald that can crash your PC. This was joke by the creator, Ronald McDonald is extremely broken. There is also custom stages made by the community that I say is much better than Smash Bros Ultimate custom stages. There is some with their own boss fight too.
Rivals of Aether is such a amazing game where you can have either competitive or casual fun. Can even make the mods competitive as well. It is the 2nd best Platform fighting game if you ask me. I enjoyed the others but Rivals of Aether is so amazing and hope to see more games made like this. I give this a Like!

I spent an entire day playing this piece of good game (I discarded group chats and planned things for it)
It's very tubular just like that one fever dream i had when i was like 7 where i was in my pajamas with the family riding in the car at like 5 am in Mordor from lord of the rings
The real "Everyone is here" platform fighter. The original characters are fun, Mollo is my main, the two crossovers in the base game are fun, even if Shovel Knight is annoying to fight, and the workshop characters are fun and the fact that the people who made this game not only allow this but encorage it is based. And the soundtrack is fire.
Its a great game and has it's quirks! Rivals 2 is coming and more up my alley but the original will always have a place is my pixelated heart. 10/10
rivals of aether, not even including the vast amount of incredible fan made workshop content you can play online with friends by simply both subscribing to the character / stage, is the single best platform fighter to have ever released. somehow rivals 2 coming out a little later this year seems to be even better than that but as of rn after 500 hours of smash bros brawl, a combined 400 in smash 4, 600+ in ultimate, and assorted hours in other platform fighters on the market, none have the consistent character, quality, and joy that this game does. super competitively viable, but just as fun to play with your friends. this is a game you can take as seriously as you want but still legitimately have a set between jerma985 and sonic the hedgehog and yk what that alone is worth the entry fee
This was a game I bought when it was in its earliest stages. It costed roughly $12 + after many years and thousands of hours(I own it on Xbox as well). I am reviewing this game to say it was the best platform fighter I’ve ever played and I cannot wait for rivals 2 at the end of this month.
EXTREMELY fun platform fighter. I bought this for workshop items and to go "haha funny meme character" but it truly is an excellently crafted game. I have tons of workshop characters, and yet, I like the main roster even more.
The amount of characters and stages you can add is really cool and a lot of the characters are very well done my favorite is Yellow from the stick man animations I think it was really well thought out and anyone who really likes fighting games has to try this
If you like playing Super Smash Bros. in a competitive manner, you'll like this game. The gameplay is nice, the art is nice, the music is nice. It's just really nice.
I bought all the dlcs as they came out and got a cool little taunt on a couple guys because it's very fun (assuming you ignore the bots) but the sequel is not looking so promising
Smash bros, but if you can think it, it exists as a playable modded character of variable quality.
Great game, the workshop brings this game endless fun! The base game is good as well, so don't worry about that.
