Rivals
Zetterburn, a son of the ruling family of the Firelands, is an experienced and hardened warrior. In battle, Zetterburn uses no weapons except for his razor-sharp claws and ability to control flame.
- BURN DAMAGE - Zetterburn's special attacks can set opponents on fire, causing them additional damage over time.
- WILD FIRE - Zetterburn's Down Special places flames on the stage. These flames stay for a period of time, burning any opponents who come in contact with them.
- FIRE AMP - When an opponent is burning, Zetterburn's Strong Attacks can absorb the flames and launch the burned enemy twice as far, making for an effective killing blow.
Orcane is a playful trickster, notorious for escaping even the most precarious of situations. He can transform into water and confuse enemies with a spray of bubbles.
- PUDDLE TELEPORTATION - Orcane creates a puddle with his Neutral Special or Down Special. He can then teleport to his puddle using his Up Special as a powerful vertical blow or an effective recovery when launched off the stage.
- BUBBLE EVAPORATION - Orcane can turn his puddle into a pillar of bubbles with his Down Special to trap enemies above the puddle.
- WATER AMP - When standing on top of his puddle, Orcane can consume the water underneath him to perform powerful Strong Attacks with far greater range and knockback.
The youngest trainee in the history of the Air Academy, Wrastor has never lived by anyone's rules but his own. Currently an Aerial Ace for the Air Armada, Wrastor is wrecking havoc among the Armada's enemies and generals alike.
- WINGED FLIGHT - Wrastor can jump 4 times, making him incredible at controlling the air and recovering from the toughest falls even when things look grim.
- WIND CURRENT - Wrastor can create a Wind Current with his Forward Special, allowing him to move faster within it and chase his targets more effectively.
- AERIAL ACE - Wrastor performs his charged Strong Attacks in the air instead of on the ground, a first for this genre.
Kragg is a defender of the colossal Aetherian Forest. Deliberate and loyal, he is one of the infamous Wall Runners who patrol the Rock Wall. Unlike other Wall Runners, Kragg has the legendary ability to control the earth with his will.
- ROCK HURL - Kragg can pull a rock out of the ground and hurl it at opponents. After it leaves his hands, the rock becomes a solid piece of stage that either Kragg or other players can break.
- DEFENSE BALL - Kragg can curl into a ball and roll toward enemies. Although he can be damaged while in ball form, he cannot be knocked away.
- EARTH PILLAR - Kragg can summon a pillar of earth to his feet regardless of where he is. If Kragg is about to fall to his death, this move can quickly turn his situation around.
Forsburn is the disgraced, eldest son of the Firelands' ruling family. After being condemned by the Fire Council and his own brother, Forsburn found refuge in a group of outsiders who had rejected the flame and mastered the way of smoke.
- SMOKE SCREEN - Forsburn can use his Neutral Special to obscure the battlefield allowing Forsburn to remain hidden inside a cloud of smoke.
- DECOY - Through his Forward Special, Forsburn can create a smoke facsimile of himself that can attack opponents. The illusory Forsburn breaks into smoke after being hit by a single attack.
- CONSUME/COMBUST - By using his Down Special, Forsburn can consume his smoke clouds back into his body. After consuming three clouds, Forsburn is charged up and can use Down Special again to combust: knocking opponents away at high speed.
Maypul is the self-appointed Guardian of the Aetherian Forest. She commands fearful respect throughout the forest for her unhesitating vigilantism. She uses her agility to trap any unknown intruders before they even realize she is there.
- WATCHER'S MARK - Maypul can use her Seeds or her Watcher's Dash to mark opponents, making them susceptible to her following attacks.
- WRAPPED UP - After marking her targets, Maypul can use her Strong Attacks or her trusty Plant to wrap marked opponents in place allowing her to follow up with another attack.
- SLING SHOT - Maypul can use her vines to sling toward marked opponents, allowing her to elude attacks and quickly close distances.
Absa is a famed engineer and martialist of the Elders of the Air Alliance. Despite the laws of the Elders, Absa secretly developed storm techniques in the caves of the Archai mountains.
- CLOUD CONTROL - Absa can place a cloud using her Neutral or Forward Special. This cloud hangs in the air until Absa bursts it by tapping her Neutral Special and knocking enemies away.
- THUNDER BOLT - Absa can charge her Neutral Special to create a powerful lightning blast that connects her to her cloud. All opponents caught between the two will be knocked away at high speeds.
- CONDENSED STORM - Absa focuses the power of a lightning bolt to the tip of her hoof. If she can line up one of her aerial kicks perfectly, she unleashes great power.
Etalus is a legendary warrior in his native land. He is one of the last surviving members of the Harbor Guard and uses the power of ice to augment his massive strength.
- HOME ICE ADVANTAGE: Etalus can use his Forward Special or Forward Tilt to freeze the ground beneath him in order to slide across on the icy surface.
- ARMORED UP: When standing on ice, Etalus can use his Neutral Special to absorb the ice and create ice armor around his body.
- AVALANCHE: Etalus can use his Down Special to shatter all nearby ice, instantly freezing any enemies who are standing on it.
Ranno was known as be a feared martial artist who trained under wise monks. But now he prefers to peacefully protect his swampy homeland. When he has no other option, you can see glimpses of his rapid and deliberate strikes.
- POISON STACKS - Ranno’s Specials Strong Attacks and Jab Combo apply up to four poisonous stacks on his opponents. These stacks damage opponents when they attack and can be removed by hitting Ranno.
- TOXIC TRAP - Ranno’s Neutral Special and Down Special can place his opponents in a Toxic Bubble Trap that makes it easier for Ranno to combo. The length of time in the trap depends on the number of Poison Stacks on the opponent.
- POISON SPIN - Ranno’s recovery onto stage has three options. He begins it with a Poison Lunge that is quick and knocks opponents away. After the lunge he can quickly Poison Kick down onto the stage with another quick strike. Or he can use the Posion Spin to fire out an array of Posion Darts in many directions.
Clairen is a seasoned warrior from a distant future where the heroes of flame vanish and never return. After being defeated by a tyrannical and ever-living emperor, she travels back in time in order to defeat him.
- IONIZED TIP - Unlike the other soldiers from the future, Clairen manipulates her blade to be two-toned. The end of Clairen's sword is super-charged, allowing her to stun enemies who are hit precisely with the tip.
- PLASMA ECHO - Clairen dashes forward with her Side Special to quickly escape. The deadly plasma resonance left behind can damage enemies and even KO opponents with its sweet spot.
- ENERGY FIELD - Performing a Down Special right before an attack hits Clairen will trigger her energy field. This field damages and pushes other Rivals away while nullifying all projectiles that try to enter it.
Sylvanos is the heart of the Aetherian Forest. A rageful deity, Sylvanos has only a single goal - to expand the forest over all of Aether. Unfortunately, the great Rock Wall traps the spirit as he patrols the forest’s floor. Sylvanos leads the plant life in the forest looking for ways to expand his dominance.
- UNTAMED GROWTH - Sylvanos spreads grass as he runs around. The grass leaves if Sylvanos is away from it for too long. Sylvanos can use Down Special to call Plants Rise and damage any opponents standing on grass.
- SEED SHOT - Sylvanos’ Neutral Special fires a deadly seed into the air. If it hits an opponent it will lock them in place, but if it reaches the ground then it will plant a flower that maintains a permanent fixture of grass on that ground or platform until it is destroyed.
- BURROW - Sylvanos can dig into solid ground and reappear by digging out from a different position. If he digs under grass he can pop out with a strong bite attack to KO enemies off the top of the screen.
Elliana is a snake from the burrows in the Eastern Wastelands who has always dreamt of flying. After her dreams of joining the Air Armada were crushed by an intolerant captain, she sought the aid of Ayala, a brilliant engineer. Together they built a steam-powered flying machine and with it, Elliana now plans to destroy the armada that rejected her.
- OVERHEAT - Elliana’s ship heats up when she uses specials or her unique double jump that allows her to hover. Once overheated she can no longer use her specials or hover, becoming more vulnerable to her enemies.
- LETTING OFF STEAM - Elliana can perform Strong Attacks to expel steam away from her ship, lowering her Overheat bar. The steam can also catch opponents or be blown away by attacks. When she is overheated, her strong attacks let off a powerful explosion instead that can KO opponents.
- ABANDON SHIP - Elliana can use her Up Special to abandon ship even when overheated. She launches herself high into the air and her ship explodes. Be careful, as she is very vulnerable while outside of her ship and she must rebuild it upon landing on the ground.
Ori and Sein are from the hit indie game Ori and the Blind Forest and they bring their skills to the test in Rivals of Aether. While Ori works to Bash, Stomp and Glide his way to victory, Sein can use the Spirit Flame or the Charged Flame to put enemies between a rock and a hard place.
- SPIRIT FLAME – Sein follows Ori around the battlefield. Ori can tap Neutral Special to have Sein quickly fire a Spirit Flame from wherever Sein is. Ori can hold Neutral Special to have Sein use the Charged Flame.
- BASH – Ori can use Down Special to Bash nearly anything in Rivals of Aether – from characters to projectiles to rocks and plants. Ori can also move around the stage by bashing the Light Grenade that is thrown by using Forward Special.
- TAG TEAM – When Ori and Sein are close enough, Ori can use Strong Attacks to initiate tag team combos. These Strong Attacks have more powerful properties as Sein assists Ori for a more devastating blow.
Shovel Knight has learned a lot during Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove and he brings those skills with him to Rivals of Aether. Shovel Knight swings, digs and shovel drops his way through the Rivals roster. He does it all while collecting treasure which he can use to purchase upgrades to give him the upper hand on the battlefield.
- TREASURE HUNTER – Shovel Knight’s attacks knock coins and gems out of his opponents. He can collect these to increase his treasure. By taunting, he summons Chester and can use his treasure to purchase either Relics or Armors to improve his fighting ability.
- SHOVEL DROP – Shovel Knight’s signature ability is his Down Air in Rivals of Aether. With this attack he can strike his opponents from above and bounce off their heads. Hold the attack button to keep the Shovel beneath him. He can also bounce off objects and projectiles!
- EXPERT FISHERMAN – Shovel Knight’s down special is the Fishing Rod. Use it off the side of the stage to fish up some treasure. Time it correctly and fish up a Treasure Rock, but time it perfectly and get a Golden Fish.

The game on itself is very good and well made, but with mods you can have Goku fight Homer Simpson meanwhile Undertale Sans is fighing Hatsune Miku On The Going Merry
Absolute Cinema
Its pretty fun game but a few players like me run into a problem when i start up the game an error like this appeared:
win32 function failed: HRESULT:0x887a0005
call:GR_D3D_device -> CreateTexture2D at line 453 in file
/TexturesM.cpp
Device lost - reason: 0x887a0020
Could you fix it?
Smash bros but with furries.
Smash bro buy autistic with mods. 10 / 10
This game is amazing! Its like smash bros on computer, and the workshop is a great addition. Play this you will have a good time
This game is really funny with mods I can now finally see Baldi fight Peppino in Strong Bad's computer 10/10
Don't let the mods fool you, the base game roster are fantastic to play as, and finding a match is a alot easier then some bigger games in general. If you like unique platform fighters, I recommend picking it up.
good game with tones of replayability with the work shop. sadly i don't have enough time to know
The workshop is full of incredible creations! give it a try!
this game is a very unique game with a nice fighting style. the fact that in the workshop you can download custom maps and characters is what makes it good.
a bug whare i cude not play the gsme i'll try again see if i fixed it
this game is so good you have sans vs my singing monster char vs cuphead vs the wii remote
amazing gameplay fun pixelated design hundreds of broken and balanced workshop charicters.
lowkey, this game kinda fireeeeeeeeeeeeee. play with mods and friends to enhance the ultimate rivals of THE aether experience. my only complaint is when my good ol' pal [REDACTED] uses cosmic ronald, and op sans from the hit game deltarune on my ass. i don't get mad, it's far from that, it's funny even. but that's not the dev's fault, blame the modders!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! thank you.
Very polished characters (unless playing with mods) and pretty decent maps
Came for the Workshop, stayed for the extremely polished and fun gameplay. Absa my beloved.
better than every smash game, better than the sequel, underrated asf
its very good from the workshop but if you wanna play with the normal games caractheres buy rivals of aether 2 overall insanely good game
Really good game, even better with mods. Would recommend 100%
Imo the single most fun fighting game because of the movement
Every character is deep and none feel similar
Ranked is great
Single player is there
my fav plat fighter

Great fighting game with a bunch of mods to make your game play more fun. Looking for a more competitive prespective well no worries because this game can get real competitive.
The base game has a lot of content, but let's be real, you're here for the mods.
Good game. Hope to still get new characters and updates to this version.
Fun character choices even from the included set from first downlowed, and you can even and more if you are on pc.
Generally speaking this is a good game combat wise. My only issue is that it gets extremely stale with the low amount of characters the game offers; but that's where workshop comes in. The modability in this game is superb and won't end up being beaten out; not even in the second game. It's amazingly put together and honestly should have been the main focus, if you ask me.
Graphics: 7/10
Performance/Ease of Access: 9/10
Combat: 9/10
Balancing: 8/10
Fun I've had with mods: 10/10
Would recommend!
This game is amazing i have played for over 500 hours and i keep coming back mainly due to the dedecaited community making workshop characters definitly worth the price
Stellar game You should try it. worth the price. ngl. If you have the brains you can litterly make any fighter you want with the power of modding
The roster is infinite due to the workshop and overall the gameplay is very fun. I would highly reccomend this game to people
Hands down one of the best platform fighters ever made. Platform fighters in general are a genre that's far under-explored. Outside of Smash and PM/P+, the genre is barren. There have been licensed games and one or two indies here and there, but they either fall short mechanically or with their appeal (either visually, with character variety, or with mechanical depth)
Rivals of Aether, however, delivers on all fronts. Beautiful pixel art, readable animation, a diverse cast, unique mechanical identity (especially compared to Smash), and tons of mechanical depth. It manages to both be inviting to long-time Smash fans and uniquely stand apart from the series through its own changes and innovations. Taking from Melee, PM/P+, and even traditional fighters to make a game that's always a great time and will remain evergreen
Top that off with great QoL features (easy wavedashes, removal of L canceling + mashing, and more plentiful spike tech opportunities) plus even better features that the genre needs more of (rollback netcode, workshop support, and excellent lobby/matchmaking), and it's no wonder why Rivals is able to stand toe-to-toe with Smash of all series for so many people
If you enjoy Smash for its mechanics + gameplay, and not just for its general appeal through characters or mainstream popularity, then you should absolutely play this game. Casual and hardcore players alike will find so much to enjoy about the game
A fun fresh take on the platform fighter genre. It brings a lot of unique mechanics to the genre and has an incredibly satisfying game feel. Fast to learn with plenty to master. Designed with competition in mind there's a feeling of balance among most of the cast and a rewarding level of depth among all the characters.
Doesn't suffer from homogeneous character design like many other platform fighters. Most importantly, a great local community. Worth trying out, I have yet to find another game that feels as good to play.
its pretty good dont get the shitty meme characters tho it becomes a pain to remove them after the few 200
This game is easily a 9/10 for me but the fun is a 9.5/10 tbh if u dont care about some small downsides. At first the game might seem underwhelming BUT TRUST ME THAT CAN CHANGE VERY FAST.There are 18 characters in the game 16 original and 2 crossovers, thats enaugh but doesnt compare to smash the pixel graphics are also ok,but then you start playing the game AND ITS SO GOOD the game is very meele like and EVERY character fits it,YES EVEN TANKS like etalus for example his base isnt as fast but he has a great wavedash and can set up ice on the ground wich he can slide on for speed and his run attack gives him a HUGE speed boost on it,but its balanced by being very slippery and uncontroleable, the game also has alot of advanced tech inspirered by other platform fighters but also completely new stuff like parries(okay thats inpiered a bit by shields but i dont know much advanced tech cuz i forgot half of it after the advanced tutorial lol)speaking of tutorials the game has AMAZING ingame tutorials for EVERY character and mechanic, and no its not just a overwhelming book it actuly puts in the effort to teach u the stuff interactively.Where was i...oh yeah every moveset also is very creative and VERY WELL desinged and most movesets have a low skillfloor but always high skillcelling theyre also alwas fun to play because they have atleast area theyre really good in and have alot of freedom like wrastor he has great air movement and can use smash attacks in the air this alows really free and fun air combat but its balanced by taking away smash attacks on the ground and making him not very heavy,he really stands out is very hard to master(atleast thats what pro players say)but still stays fun because youre so free in the air, another example is clairens freeze if you hit the enemy with the tip of your sword they freeze for abit before they get knockback this makes comboing alot easier and its SO SATIFYING IF U USE IT RIGHT.The game also has cool stages that arent mindblowingy good but good enaugh to be a + point and the ost is also very good but not in my top 5 or something still a + point. With everything good out of the way i wanna point out a flaw that might ruin the game for some people. The games content is a bit underwhelming every character has a mastery with a few rewards, theres online ranked with a bit of side rewards, you can unlock a few buddies(cosmetical characters following you ),there are 2 extra gamemodes and one has a bit of unlockable content,oh yeah theres also a small story mode but its only a few bot matches with a bit of story after every fight wich i kinda like because very characters get their own lore but its not mindblowing, anyways the content might not be enaugh for alot of people probably.Btw Online(atleast casual matches i dont play alot of ranked) also is dead at some times of the day because most people play RoA 2 now but you can easily find matches if its day in the USA because most of the playerbase lives there, and you can maybe find a few people if you come back maybe 20 minutes later but its not the games fault thats why i doesnt count. You probably think this is the end of the review BUT OH BOI IM NOT FINISHED YET,IF YOU SOMEHOW LIVE UNDER A ROCK OR NEVER HEARD OF THE GAME:THERES STEAM WORKSHOP AND HOLY #### ITS GREAT THERE ARE THOUSANDS OF STAGES BUDDIES SKINS AND SO MANY CROSSOVER CHARACTERS AND EVEN ORIGINAL CHARACTERS,AND GUESS WHAT MOST OF IT IS ACTUALLY GOOD.MOST CHARACTERS HAVE THEIR OWN UNIQUE MOVESETS AND MECHANICS ITS RIDICILOUS YOU CAN PLAY AS ANYONE FROM OBAMA TO MARIO BOTW LINK(NOT A COPY OF SMASH),TOTK LINK,GOKU OR LITTERAL CHESS PIECES(AND GUESS WHAT?THEYRE SOMHOW WELL MADE AND COMPETETIVE)SOME ARE SO WELL MADE THEY COULD LITTERALY BE IN THE GAME,OH WAIT?4 OR OF THEM ARE IN THE MAIN GAME AND ONE WILL BE IN RIVALS 2??? THERE ARE EVEN MORE THAT DESERVE TO BE IN THE MAINGAME IN MY OPINION,THERE ARE EVEN WORKSHOP TOURNAMENTS ITS SO AMAZING,AND GUESS WHAT ITS THE SAME FOR STAGES AND MAYBE BUDDIES(Idk i dont use them) AND GUESS WHAT?YOU CAN PLAY EVERYTHING FROM THE WORKSHOP ONLINE(Theres a option to play with or without workshop characters).Wow i gotta chill, but its just so amazing. You can use the workshop by enabling it in the match settings, and you can only use characters other people own wich is good because you can blacklist op or bad stuff but also bad because you sometimes get unfair online matches where you cant play any of your mains, you might think i would give the game a 9.9/10 because of the workhsop but i wont because the workshop can get very overhelming sometimes ,because of the problem with blacklisting workshop stuff, because workshop might not be for everyone and because after a while you might get bored of just playing new characters.
Amazing entry to the platform fighting genre. The controls feel good, the cast is varied and colorful and the animations are top notch. RoA has an edge above all other platform fighter simply due to its workshop support and its community making this game as legendary at it currently is.
THE mods for this game are amazing, the lore is fine. i highly suggest going to workshop and getting some mods
its a very good game because you can add any mod to the game even maps and characters you like but there are some they don't have or your favorite character they only have some
You can play as Ronald McDonald fighting a furry OC, WIP character that doesn't have 70% of their moveset, a character that doesn't have a hurtbox and is an immortal being that kills everyone within seconds, a chair, fighting against a giant Barack Obama bossfight. Having pets that play the spinning cockroach sound effect that can be layerd on top of each other for the loudest army of roaches you've heard. And fighting on stages that are just the outside of Waffle House and Walmart. Peak 2D platformer 👍
smash bros but you dont have to rip your switch in half to get sans undertale as a fighter :D
but seriously its an overall great game, super fun if your a fan of games that are like smash bros and others.
I originally got this game with Dungeons of Aether bundled for $15 so this game was a really good deal.
Mods/community support are amazing so if I want to spice things up, I know where to go.
I also really enjoy the offline gamemodes so even though Rivals 2 may take most of the players from here, I can still have plenty of fun with this game still. This might also be one of the few games that I am making an attempt to 100% with achievements because this game provides a continuous stream of entertainment.
I might get Rivals 2 once I 100% this game. I have played the demo and to be honest, I prefer the feeling and overall gameplay of the original.
10/10 platform fighter while I would give Rivals 2 about a 7.5/10.
Unlike in Rivals 2 this one does not feel like you are playing underwater. It's snappy. Fun. Chaotic and great to play with friends. Get this one. Wait to see if 2 gets any better.
I found the most overpowered character in fiction in this game his name is PIccolo but he just wins automatically
peak game frfr, its the only game where you can have ness from earthbound to mike wasowsky from monsters inc.
This is a wonderful fighter. And not that I would like to compare it to Super Smash Bros. but this is just a steam workshop of that game. Not a negative but a positive thing!
Very easy to make mods as long as you can sprite, the community has mad wonderful mods as well, and after two weeks of owning I already have 74 hours.
I would deffinitly buy this if it is currently on sale, and you should get this if even one of your friends has it.
this game plays really well and has an extremely talented modding community, i highly recommend it to those who like fast-paced fighting games
This is one of the most funnest platform fighters i've played. also the modding community is really good with all the good releases
fun platform fighter with infinite content.
It's very, uh, not stable with mods on online multiplayer and even in local multiplayer sometimes too. Kinda defeats the purpose of getting the game when one of its most popular functions isn't... well... functioning. Otherwise 8/10 game. Get it on sale, it's not worth 30 bucks.
Probably the best platform fighter on the market. You can play as anyone, the game runs smooth as butter and the pixel art is truly stunning. 10/10
Great with friends but the ai is easy to beat after awhile, better with mods
Very likely the best platform fighter on the steam market curently. Pretty high skill celling and lots of freedom in it's gameplay. When it came out people said there wasn't a lot of content for casual but with the steam workshop characters it has kind of became the MUGEN of platform fighters which can be very fun with friends, the online playerbase is still quite active too and I've made a few steam friends thanks to it.
With the release of Rivals 2 I don't know how this game will stand the test of time but I think it's a nice addition to any platform fighters lover's library nonetheless, because that's the kind of gameplay that I feel will stand the test of time.
This is actually one of the first few games I pirated cause I had no money at the time, bought if after cause it had no online mode, I'd say that was a pretty nice decision lol, thanks for the memories RoA. o7
An addicting, fast paced fighting platformer that further ropes you in with its massive community workshop behind it allowing you to play as any character from any form of media
