Rivals

Zetterburn, a son of the ruling family of the Firelands, is an experienced and hardened warrior. In battle, Zetterburn uses no weapons except for his razor-sharp claws and ability to control flame.
- BURN DAMAGE - Zetterburn's special attacks can set opponents on fire, causing them additional damage over time.
- WILD FIRE - Zetterburn's Down Special places flames on the stage. These flames stay for a period of time, burning any opponents who come in contact with them.
- FIRE AMP - When an opponent is burning, Zetterburn's Strong Attacks can absorb the flames and launch the burned enemy twice as far, making for an effective killing blow.

Orcane is a playful trickster, notorious for escaping even the most precarious of situations. He can transform into water and confuse enemies with a spray of bubbles.
- PUDDLE TELEPORTATION - Orcane creates a puddle with his Neutral Special or Down Special. He can then teleport to his puddle using his Up Special as a powerful vertical blow or an effective recovery when launched off the stage.
- BUBBLE EVAPORATION - Orcane can turn his puddle into a pillar of bubbles with his Down Special to trap enemies above the puddle.
- WATER AMP - When standing on top of his puddle, Orcane can consume the water underneath him to perform powerful Strong Attacks with far greater range and knockback.

The youngest trainee in the history of the Air Academy, Wrastor has never lived by anyone's rules but his own. Currently an Aerial Ace for the Air Armada, Wrastor is wrecking havoc among the Armada's enemies and generals alike.
- WINGED FLIGHT - Wrastor can jump 4 times, making him incredible at controlling the air and recovering from the toughest falls even when things look grim.
- WIND CURRENT - Wrastor can create a Wind Current with his Forward Special, allowing him to move faster within it and chase his targets more effectively.
- AERIAL ACE - Wrastor performs his charged Strong Attacks in the air instead of on the ground, a first for this genre.

Kragg is a defender of the colossal Aetherian Forest. Deliberate and loyal, he is one of the infamous Wall Runners who patrol the Rock Wall. Unlike other Wall Runners, Kragg has the legendary ability to control the earth with his will.
- ROCK HURL - Kragg can pull a rock out of the ground and hurl it at opponents. After it leaves his hands, the rock becomes a solid piece of stage that either Kragg or other players can break.
- DEFENSE BALL - Kragg can curl into a ball and roll toward enemies. Although he can be damaged while in ball form, he cannot be knocked away.
- EARTH PILLAR - Kragg can summon a pillar of earth to his feet regardless of where he is. If Kragg is about to fall to his death, this move can quickly turn his situation around.

Forsburn is the disgraced, eldest son of the Firelands' ruling family. After being condemned by the Fire Council and his own brother, Forsburn found refuge in a group of outsiders who had rejected the flame and mastered the way of smoke.
- SMOKE SCREEN - Forsburn can use his Neutral Special to obscure the battlefield allowing Forsburn to remain hidden inside a cloud of smoke.
- DECOY - Through his Forward Special, Forsburn can create a smoke facsimile of himself that can attack opponents. The illusory Forsburn breaks into smoke after being hit by a single attack.
- CONSUME/COMBUST - By using his Down Special, Forsburn can consume his smoke clouds back into his body. After consuming three clouds, Forsburn is charged up and can use Down Special again to combust: knocking opponents away at high speed.

Maypul is the self-appointed Guardian of the Aetherian Forest. She commands fearful respect throughout the forest for her unhesitating vigilantism. She uses her agility to trap any unknown intruders before they even realize she is there.
- WATCHER'S MARK - Maypul can use her Seeds or her Watcher's Dash to mark opponents, making them susceptible to her following attacks.
- WRAPPED UP - After marking her targets, Maypul can use her Strong Attacks or her trusty Plant to wrap marked opponents in place allowing her to follow up with another attack.
- SLING SHOT - Maypul can use her vines to sling toward marked opponents, allowing her to elude attacks and quickly close distances.

Absa is a famed engineer and martialist of the Elders of the Air Alliance. Despite the laws of the Elders, Absa secretly developed storm techniques in the caves of the Archai mountains.
- CLOUD CONTROL - Absa can place a cloud using her Neutral or Forward Special. This cloud hangs in the air until Absa bursts it by tapping her Neutral Special and knocking enemies away.
- THUNDER BOLT - Absa can charge her Neutral Special to create a powerful lightning blast that connects her to her cloud. All opponents caught between the two will be knocked away at high speeds.
- CONDENSED STORM - Absa focuses the power of a lightning bolt to the tip of her hoof. If she can line up one of her aerial kicks perfectly, she unleashes great power.

Etalus is a legendary warrior in his native land. He is one of the last surviving members of the Harbor Guard and uses the power of ice to augment his massive strength.
- HOME ICE ADVANTAGE: Etalus can use his Forward Special or Forward Tilt to freeze the ground beneath him in order to slide across on the icy surface.
- ARMORED UP: When standing on ice, Etalus can use his Neutral Special to absorb the ice and create ice armor around his body.
- AVALANCHE: Etalus can use his Down Special to shatter all nearby ice, instantly freezing any enemies who are standing on it.

Ranno was known as be a feared martial artist who trained under wise monks. But now he prefers to peacefully protect his swampy homeland. When he has no other option, you can see glimpses of his rapid and deliberate strikes.
- POISON STACKS - Ranno’s Specials Strong Attacks and Jab Combo apply up to four poisonous stacks on his opponents. These stacks damage opponents when they attack and can be removed by hitting Ranno.
- TOXIC TRAP - Ranno’s Neutral Special and Down Special can place his opponents in a Toxic Bubble Trap that makes it easier for Ranno to combo. The length of time in the trap depends on the number of Poison Stacks on the opponent.
- POISON SPIN - Ranno’s recovery onto stage has three options. He begins it with a Poison Lunge that is quick and knocks opponents away. After the lunge he can quickly Poison Kick down onto the stage with another quick strike. Or he can use the Posion Spin to fire out an array of Posion Darts in many directions.

Clairen is a seasoned warrior from a distant future where the heroes of flame vanish and never return. After being defeated by a tyrannical and ever-living emperor, she travels back in time in order to defeat him.
- IONIZED TIP - Unlike the other soldiers from the future, Clairen manipulates her blade to be two-toned. The end of Clairen's sword is super-charged, allowing her to stun enemies who are hit precisely with the tip.
- PLASMA ECHO - Clairen dashes forward with her Side Special to quickly escape. The deadly plasma resonance left behind can damage enemies and even KO opponents with its sweet spot.
- ENERGY FIELD - Performing a Down Special right before an attack hits Clairen will trigger her energy field. This field damages and pushes other Rivals away while nullifying all projectiles that try to enter it.

Sylvanos is the heart of the Aetherian Forest. A rageful deity, Sylvanos has only a single goal - to expand the forest over all of Aether. Unfortunately, the great Rock Wall traps the spirit as he patrols the forest’s floor. Sylvanos leads the plant life in the forest looking for ways to expand his dominance.
- UNTAMED GROWTH - Sylvanos spreads grass as he runs around. The grass leaves if Sylvanos is away from it for too long. Sylvanos can use Down Special to call Plants Rise and damage any opponents standing on grass.
- SEED SHOT - Sylvanos’ Neutral Special fires a deadly seed into the air. If it hits an opponent it will lock them in place, but if it reaches the ground then it will plant a flower that maintains a permanent fixture of grass on that ground or platform until it is destroyed.
- BURROW - Sylvanos can dig into solid ground and reappear by digging out from a different position. If he digs under grass he can pop out with a strong bite attack to KO enemies off the top of the screen.

Elliana is a snake from the burrows in the Eastern Wastelands who has always dreamt of flying. After her dreams of joining the Air Armada were crushed by an intolerant captain, she sought the aid of Ayala, a brilliant engineer. Together they built a steam-powered flying machine and with it, Elliana now plans to destroy the armada that rejected her.
- OVERHEAT - Elliana’s ship heats up when she uses specials or her unique double jump that allows her to hover. Once overheated she can no longer use her specials or hover, becoming more vulnerable to her enemies.
- LETTING OFF STEAM - Elliana can perform Strong Attacks to expel steam away from her ship, lowering her Overheat bar. The steam can also catch opponents or be blown away by attacks. When she is overheated, her strong attacks let off a powerful explosion instead that can KO opponents.
- ABANDON SHIP - Elliana can use her Up Special to abandon ship even when overheated. She launches herself high into the air and her ship explodes. Be careful, as she is very vulnerable while outside of her ship and she must rebuild it upon landing on the ground.

Ori and Sein are from the hit indie game Ori and the Blind Forest and they bring their skills to the test in Rivals of Aether. While Ori works to Bash, Stomp and Glide his way to victory, Sein can use the Spirit Flame or the Charged Flame to put enemies between a rock and a hard place.
- SPIRIT FLAME – Sein follows Ori around the battlefield. Ori can tap Neutral Special to have Sein quickly fire a Spirit Flame from wherever Sein is. Ori can hold Neutral Special to have Sein use the Charged Flame.
- BASH – Ori can use Down Special to Bash nearly anything in Rivals of Aether – from characters to projectiles to rocks and plants. Ori can also move around the stage by bashing the Light Grenade that is thrown by using Forward Special.
- TAG TEAM – When Ori and Sein are close enough, Ori can use Strong Attacks to initiate tag team combos. These Strong Attacks have more powerful properties as Sein assists Ori for a more devastating blow.

Shovel Knight has learned a lot during Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove and he brings those skills with him to Rivals of Aether. Shovel Knight swings, digs and shovel drops his way through the Rivals roster. He does it all while collecting treasure which he can use to purchase upgrades to give him the upper hand on the battlefield.
- TREASURE HUNTER – Shovel Knight’s attacks knock coins and gems out of his opponents. He can collect these to increase his treasure. By taunting, he summons Chester and can use his treasure to purchase either Relics or Armors to improve his fighting ability.
- SHOVEL DROP – Shovel Knight’s signature ability is his Down Air in Rivals of Aether. With this attack he can strike his opponents from above and bounce off their heads. Hold the attack button to keep the Shovel beneath him. He can also bounce off objects and projectiles!
- EXPERT FISHERMAN – Shovel Knight’s down special is the Fishing Rod. Use it off the side of the stage to fish up some treasure. Time it correctly and fish up a Treasure Rock, but time it perfectly and get a Golden Fish.

ze mods...... i can finnaly see hatsune miku vs doom guy slayer of all that is evil exactly what i needed
Recommended, with some things I'd note.
The game feels very nice to play; I honestly prefer the high speed recoveries and parrying meta compared to smash bros' slower shield-based meta, even after ultimate made the series generally play faster. If my internet is running well, then online runs without issue. When it comes to platform fighters, these are probably the 2 biggest positives I could give a game.
Now for my main downside: the game is absolutely not worth 30 dollars on consoles, and arguably not worth 30 dollars on PC. The content you get in the base game is nowhere near as much as its contemporaries in the genre. However, the addition of workshop support fixes this issue in its entirety; the quality is inconsistent of course, but I would have not bought this game if it weren't for the insane amount of fun fighters to mess around with that have been released by the fanbase. I have other nitpicks like the CPU's not being very bright and the stage hazards generally being too intrusive even for casual play, but those ones are passable compared to the content problem.
I'd recommend the game, despite my prior points. Pick it up on sale, though; 15 dollars is a great price!
This is a well-made smash-like game with custom fighters and stages you can add in.
The workshop in this game carries, but the base characters (shovel knight) are goated
As much as I appreciate the fan-made content available in the Workshop, I just want to take some time to appreciate the amount of work that's gone into making Rivals of Aether the most memorable platform-fighter experience I've ever had, regardless of mods.
Great-looking pixel art graphics that enable the game to run on toasters ; a decently-sized roster of unique fighters, none of which feel like clones of any characters from Smash (with a couple of really cool guests from Shovel Knight and Ori & the Blind Forest) ; stellar animation that reads extremely well even on such small sprites ; incredibly tight controls that feel more natural than Smash could ever hope for ; and my god... that soundtrack... godly tunes from heaven itself (available on streaming services!).
Rivals II might be here, but RoA is where it all started and this game still amazes me to this day.
I'm not very good at it, but it definitely conquered my VS fighting-obsessed heart.
10/10
This game is so good you have to try it! there are over 10,000 mods that add buddy's, maps, and characters!
But you can't play with keyboard you have to have a controller that connects with blue tooth like an XBox controller
smash bros + easy custom character support + amazing art = peak
Sorta hard to get into the controls, theses like SO MANY different attacks for just a single character, and all of them are linked together so well so im not complaining. besides that, luv the community made characters and maps!!! makes the pvp rlly fun
I can't believe I was missing out on this game! This is the best Smash Bros. clone I've played! You want to play this with your most requested characters from Smash that never got in, then this is for you!
I'll primarily be discussing the gameplay of Rivals of Aether. You are probably aware of the workshop support this game has but I would argue that workshop would not nearly be as fun if not for the core systems in Rivals of Aether that make it one of the most fun platform fighters out their period. I would argue that this game is more new player friendly than the sequel.
New Player Friendly What do you mean? First let's establish what I believe new players want to do when they boot up a fighting game for the first time: They want the movement to feel good, they want to do cool combos, and they want to hit the opponent.
Good Movement: Rivals of Aether is a fast game and that's without factoring in movement tech like wave dashing and wave landing. The base engine makes moving around good. You can adjust your stick sensitivity so you can change how much you want to dash. Jumping is great, the air dodge is great as it acts like a third jump without obscene lag afterwards. Speaking of lag. Pretty much all attacks have low ending lag and most ariels have low landing lag. You aren't punished by the game itself because you want to jump and attack, I respect that.
Combos: Because of the low lag on moves, if you land one hit you can usually land another. Combos in this game feel so nice, it genuinely feels like any attack can combo into any other attack as long as the opponent's percent is low enough, and that's without factoring techniques like hitfalling.
Hitting the Opponent: This is where Rivals of Aether's limitations shine. The complete lack of shielding in this game means that offense is your defense. When you go to hit your opponent, you don't have to worry about if your attack is safe on shield or if you spaced it properly or if the opponent is going to spot dodge. The only thing you need to worry about is the chad parry: A defensive option with just as much risk as it rewards.
I see only two cons with the gameplay of Rivals of Aether:
Ledges, there are none. This flies in the face of every other platform fighter save for Brawlhalla and completely changes the recover game of Rivals. Teaching new players that they not only need to land on stage but also that they can wall jump, that they can wall jump out of freefall, and that they get their up special back after a wall jump is one of the few onboarding tips that new players must go through to appreciate this game.
Finally the playerbase. There are some good eggs in there but I won't deny that Rivals of Aether 1 is filled with sweaty tryhards who will hitstun you straight into uninstalling the game. This is mostly an issue with the small player base the game has but I assure you that Rivals of Aether is a fun game to learn and that you should stick to ranked when going online as to play with players of your skill level. I personally blame the lack of marketing and pixel art visuals for this lack of a playerbase, because the average consumer wants highend graphics.
That said you don't need to play online. This game has years worth of content such as fighting with or against friends, playing tetherball, a literal horde mode, a story mode that... exists, and... reluctantly... Workshop support.
Not to mention this game goes on sale frequently and at a good price, plus they made all the prior dlc fighters free so the only dlc are skins. Anyway what are you waiting for? Get in here.
bager game with the bro and with mods
Smash but 2D but different (also unbalanced just like it)
its like smash has a lot of great fighters in the workshop
While it does have a good system and verything, you really need mods and a controller to make it fun
I love this game I am huge fan of plat fighters. Dan really did well with this one and roa II great job love the wok
best game ever because you can install costum character from whorkshop.
over semplificated:super smash bros whit infinite character
its very good i love that it allows me to mod any character into the game
probably my favorite platform fighter of all time
i played throughout the development process of the game on and off, thoroughly enjoyed it, think it's mechanically a great game. playing the second one, which i think is arguably worse, kind of highlights just how good the first game is. I never enjoyed ledge or shield in these types of games so a hard parry system and robust wall jump and recovery options feel amazing to interact with.
no character feels particularly bad in the right hands and the balance is amazing. it cant really be helped that sword characters and characters with disjoints are inherently broken in this type of game unfortunately, but I'm just glad this game exists as a person who couldn't get into melee but wanted something similar
when i install workshop mods it doesnt go into the game now i wasted 30 dollars if i wanted to play mods or do something else when i beat the game
Currently unplayable for me when I use my 1 controller it thinks I have 2 and when trying to fix it it swapped my D pad and ABXY buttons while giving me a mysterious 3rd player connected and now I can’t even go into full screen the game expands beyond the borders of my monitor and even overlays into my second don't know why I'm only now having all these problems but would love to have them fixed
Great platformer fighting game, active workshop support lets this game live even longer
I'm sad to see the workshop go with the new sequel. but who am i kidding i ain't playing the sequel! in my opinion this one is better, the soundtrack, the workshop characters, the downright amazing pixel art! To be completely honest i don't really like the new characters being added to rivals of aether 2. So i'm gonna stick with this game until they BRING. WORKSHOP. BACK. but their probably not gonna do that so i'm gonna keep playing this until steam starts to lose everything they built. so with everything else said and done, Let this gem of a game live on forever!
Super Smash Bro's: Furry Edition (with wonderful mod/workshop support)
Hot take, This game is only good because of workshop. The base characters are bland and mostly unoriginal.
Such a W. its such a good fighter on its own, but the workshop makes it 10x better. theres tons of charfacters.
TLDR: 9.5/10 Without a doubt the best competitive platform fighter ever created. ROA continues to hold up with some of, if not the most unique and complex characters in a platform fighter. And this game means a whole lot more than what it's presented as.
Actual Review (No Spoilers)
This game was born out of passion for the side of the smash community that Nintendo actively exterminates. They are the reason why this (now franchise) exists. ROA has all the ingredients to make the perfect platform fighter: Unique and balanced characters, fluid movement, a high skill ceiling, interesting stages, INSANELY good music, and a beautiful, clearly readable artstyle. I also believe that this game is still better than Rivals 2, despite ROA not having some nice things that Rivals 2 does.
The original N64 Smash Bros started something that I hope will never die: Not just the platform fighting genre, but specifically platfighters that allow for creative expression. Nintendo has all but squandered the full potential of skill expression in smash that I am confident in saying they will never return to. Smash bros started it, Melee refined and popularized it, Project M perfected it, and Rivals of Aether turned it into it's own IP. ROA will sadly never be as big as smash because platfighting has a largely casual playerbase. Smash kinda is the reason for that, but even ignoring Nintendo's monopoly on the genre, non-smash platfighters are still just a subgenre. Brawlhalla is probably the most successful and even has a healthy balance of casual-to-competitive, but it still is a fraction of the size of smash (and has it's own massive issues).
I think ROA is the last bastion of the couch co-op days of fighters. Rivals 2 is easier to pick up and more casual-friendly, and will probably continue to claim most of the online playerbase. But ROA serves as a pinnacle and memorial to the movement that was started decades ago by a passionate community that I hope will live on forever. 9.5/10
I spent 30 minutes playing 52 broly pickup at 2 AM with my friend. Rivals of Aether 1 is the only game in which that sentence can make any remote sense.
You can basically put gumball and darwin up against sans undertale. 10/10
Could've sworn I had reviewed this ages ago, but oops! Rivals is an incredible and unique platform fighter with a great cast of characters and a few fun modes aside from the core competitive 1v1 versus. This isn't my most played game ever but it has given me more memorable moments than many others
Recommended if you like fighting games like street fighter, but would also recommend just remote playing if you have friends but they don't have enough for the game (to make it more fun)
Genuinely the best platform fighter I've ever played. Smash used to be my main game but then this took over with amazing mechanics, beautiful graphics, fun base characters, and an astounding workshop that adds hours and hours of content. Easily a top favorite game and one I'll be playing for a long long while.
Extremely good, the character selection is basicly endless because of the amasing community characters. ( gamblecore guy is my favorite haha) The controls are fluid and simple, and the tutorial is a nice touch for new players instead of just being trown into the game with no context on the cotrols. all in all, i love this game and you should 100% buy it!
haters would say its smash bros, players would say its smash bros, With mods :)
the amount of mods you can add to the game is insane and they have so much verity
totally recomended
It won't let you play on a table though but it's a good game and the mode's for it is cool/funny the have are free and it have almost everyone in it them
inspiring. this game is so fun, honestly. the story mode is nice, the characters are cool, and don't even get me started on the workshop characters. 10/10, fully reccommend.
Absolutely incredible game. Characters are fun to mess around with, the story mode was fun, the online works well, and the workshop, oh GOD the workshop-
Marvelous fighting game, one that'll never be forgotten.
best game ever! though if your name is cone and you play peter and weegee and eggman i think i dont wanr to play! but if you are crimson or rowdy lets partayyyyyy!
bro this game is fire, the mod-ability, the art, the mechanics, they are all masterpieces what are you doing reading this, just put the funds in the purchase
workshop peter griffin vs skibidi toilet on the windows 10 desktop
the perfect platform fighter imo. it honestly might be neck and neck with smash ultimate for me as far as my enjoyment of it goes. love the artstyle, love the schmovement, and love the endless potential of workshop characters. hope this game continues to get support even if the sequel is out.
This game finally answers the age old question of 'what happens if three geese gang up on Mario in a McDonalds parking lot?'
With all of the workshop content and customization, it is easy to see why Rivals of Aether may be the most popular Indie fighting game of all time.
The only game where you can watch Donald Trump beat up Goku from Dragonball Z and Gojo From jjk
10/10, would build a wall again.
If you don't feel like modding Super Smash Bros., this game is PERFECT. Any character you can think of, you can play as in this awesome fighting game. Definitely recommend.
Every time i play the game crashes, sometimes so fast it crashes while i am on the character select screen.
Great game, the workshop characters are fun
i recomend characters created by muno,
fun game with custom mods and good game to play with friends!!!
ya i like it.
Innovates on the platfighter genre, bringing much needed new ideas to the table while questioning existing genre norms to truely create the best platfighter on the market.
Incredibly fast paced and interactive, tons of personality and player expression.
I can only hope other platfighters learn the lessons this game has trailblazed
10/10 would ruin my life for this game again
very fun and entertaining hard to master though no soos character as well :(
amazing basically just smash but with any character
