despite looking at my steam account i have played other fighting games but wow i love the story, combat and abilities, characters and art style(who couldn't like the beauty of this game) this game is not really for people who are ass at remembering buttons and the... very complicated movesets as well as the team system. i am still very very very new so don't judge me on my review
This is quite simply, mechanically, the best tag fighter on the market and it came out in 2012. that says a lot. tier lists? useless. Will you fail to block the mix? absolutely. Its a great time while it happens as well.
This is the perfect example of a fighting game that's clearly well-made but not for me.
What started off as an indie game is clearly inspired by Marvel vs. Capcom, and it shows. A lot of the mechanics follow the typical team-based fighting game style with assists. The main gimmick I like is that you can (in theory) pick only 2 or even 1 character and have your health scale up, but generally, this is not recommended.
The character designs certainly "stick out," but I've personally never been into the art style of Skullgirls; it definitely has that "early Western indie game" feel.
While the game is kind of fun to mess around with solo, I just don't think it's as enjoyable or polished as later (or even earlier) team games when playing against any competition. The balance is super whack and heavily reliant on combos and Touch of Death mechanics, with not many good defensive options.
The story mode is amusing enough, and I'm glad it's fully voiced, but I just didn't really care about any of the characters by the end, even though I completed all the story modes (in the Switch version).
When this game was one of the few to actually use GGPO rollback netcode, I might have given it a more positive recommendation. However, with so many more dynamic, better-looking, balanced, and more fun-to-play versions of anime-style/team-based fighting games available now, Skullgirls just doesn't hold up for me personally these days.
I do have to give props for showing that indie fighting games can be a thing, especially lasting over a decade.
Very cool fighting game disguised as p0rn (I love it)
Way too hard entry level (even for a fighting game), tutorial lacks multiple things it should teach you that you will only find out through youtube and wikies. If you plan to buy this game understand you most likely have to sink in around 100 hours or so before you hit multiplayer.
Got this for my wife, we haven't played a lot yet but it's been really fun and the characters are really pretty
It ain't cheesecake without the cake.
Or the original recipe and authentic ingredients come to think of it...
5/10. Skullgirls has always had a fluctuating reputation.
I love the *gameplay* of skullgirls and the character writing is very on point, but in the game's current state and lack of... well content, I can't exactly recommend it in good faith.
The community for skullgirls has been split into three or so factions:
A: The Overly loyal, blind to the problems brought on by the way the new devs kicked the old devs out and removed content
B: The Angered, Some justified, some not. In any case the angered are split between people rightfully angry at content that they **very specifically paid for**, being removed from the game.
The people angry that "panty shots" from characters who are depicted as minors were removed from the game are genuinely creepy.
The Devs removed story related content, such as Big band's backstory of fighting against a corrupt police system, and erased tons of the story content from the continuity of the game for no reason. They even removed DLC content and didn't warn players about the removal *AND* removed beta branches of the game that have the DLC content( in the art book). Very scummy behavior.
Example: The Red Egrets. A lawful evil faction who were supposed to have nazi-esque symbolism using red arm bands and german WW1 and WW2 gas masks, helmets, etc.
I want my bad guys to look evil, not like muddied messes of dark green. The red arm bands also served as a stark contrast to an otherwise all green/black/grey color palette, balancing the visual designs of the characters who wore the evil faction uniform.
They are bad guys, they are evil. Let them look as the evil they are.
If the devs wanted to censor stuff like Big band getting beaten up in his story or the Egrets, why could they not add a "censored version" in the options menu? That would cater to their points that they wanted without needlessly removing visual design elements from the cannon design of the main bad guys.
The DLC characters added to the game also begged the question, "why not just make Skullgirls 3rd Encore in the way 2nd encore was made?" and frankly the conclusion that the devs came to was... nothing. There's no real reason for them to have milked the community of DLC characters in the way that they did.
Supposedly, we were going to get a real story mode once all of the characters from the DLC were finished. It's been 3 years since Annie released and there has been no news as to what is going on with the game's development.
I can't, in good faith, recommend this game when even if you ignore all the shady practices of removing content that people paid for, even if you ignore the removal of story elements and lies about "we will add a story mode", even if you ignore the half-baked state the DLC characters released in,
That doesn't solve the problems of a super low playerbase. Buying this game means spending hundreds of hours learning against people who have Thousands of hours of playtime. It's very unlikely that Skullgirls is going to get a revival, ergo it dies as it started. Fun gameplay, interesting characters, bad everything else.
awesome art style but the fans are too horny just play magicka 2
This game was once good but then new Devs came and tried to milk this game by making one of the DLC the main game with people who paid for it getting nothing except censoreship
Back then i would have recommended the game but with it now being Milked for money and even censored i cant
Removed things from an almost 10 years old game.
Complete loser behavior.
This game is amazing, and the WORST thing in this game is training. I just cant, these long repeating combo, idk how on controller but I with my keyboard am really struggling. I think it's impossible to end ch4 7th tutorial.
I probably have 100+ hours on PS3 and PS4 from playing very casually over the past decade, and I respect all the creators from the original project who continue to do great work on this classic game.
That being said, I vehemently disagree with the decision to censor the game, even if only lightly in the grand scheme of things. It's dumb to me that you can slapstick molly-wallop a woman to death, that's taken for granted, but oh, god forbid you see her underwear as you do it, that's immoral.
I simply don't believe there's a coherent argument for why transgressive cartoon sex fantasies are inherently bad, while Mortal Kombat's photorealistic gore that gave the devs PTSD is totally hella and gets to chill. You either die a based nerd, or live long enough to see yourself become Jack Thompson, I guess.
I found a lot of value in Skullgirls as a blend of many cultural inspirations, which can be surmised to come from the diversity of it's team. At the end of the day, the game is still Alex Ahad's unabashed guro simulator, there's no changing that. Double and Painwheel are monstrosities with bizarre, necrotic, yet vaguely feminine physicality, nearly every girl's body has been invaded by some parasite or demon or whatever, the final boss is an undead loli, it's so blatant bruh. That combined with the art deco flavor, the animal people, the music, there's no other game quite like it.
As a result, the censorship that IS there would feel ridiculously feeble, craven, and halfhearted to anyone who legitimately believed this stuff was immoral (aka no one who knows what a skullgirl is). Filia's still a ridonkulously thicc schoolgirl in a short skirt. She still has a skin referencing the main girl from Highschool Of The Dead. They can't even try removing those massive, meaty, meticulously kneesock-pinched thighs from all 1400 of her sprites, because that would take such a momentous effort and probably look like trash anyway.
Not even gonna touch the Big Band or Parasoul stuff.
Anyways, I was perfectly happy with the game as a complete product in the interim years where it seemed like it was finished, so while the new characters are cool and all, I'm totally un-invested in Skullgirls continuing as the studio's workhorse forever-game. (an understandable choice after Indivisible was such a logistical nightmare, but still)
I've also read that the new fighters don't play nice with inserting files from old uncensored versions of the game, so I'm waiting until they're on sale for like $1 each to buy them.
[tl;dr] just give me an option in the settings to turn the edgy stuff back on. it can be off by default, that's fine, i get it, it's not for everyone. don't even mention it in the patch notes, those concerned enough will find it, trust me
Bad reviews got deleted so i was hoodwinked into buying it, thinking they reverted the bad changes they made.
They did not.
I'm horrible at this game, therefore it sucks.
i dont understand the controls at all. not on controller or on my keyboard. worst game ever
I love this game! Maybe not worth $20, but it's still a really good game otherwise.
Very good game, the stories are a bit over the floor firstly, but once you continue doing the rest of em, it takes form. As a side note: Fukua worst character, worst story arc, worst final boss (I was on easy mode and the devs thought it amazing to put a nightmare level as a final boss, it's making me regret buying this game fr, nerf pls)
This is a good example of an underrated gem. Fanservice aside, and despite the censorship criticism(which does suck though), this actually IS a W game.
First of all, it is hand drawn, which is rare for games these days. The game has a cool cast, even more so with the DLC, and all of the characters have their strengths and weaknesses in gameplay. The story mode is cool as well, and there’s even voice acting for each character’s story mode to add as a cherry on top of the cake. There’s also a very excellent tutorial mode, which allows you to settle into a very complex game very easily
I’d recommend playing with a controller, but keyboard only controls after definitely possible(Though it does take getting used to).
There’s definetly gonna be those that say it’s just “fighting game with fanservice” and that’s part of why this game is underrated. Give it a shot, especially because during the time I wrote this review it’s on sale for $3 and $15 with the DLC for Christmas, so it wouldn’t hurt to give it a shot.
If you want a good fighting game this holiday season, check out Skullgirls. I’m sure you’ll be a fan of it, especially if you already played the mobile counterpart.
ITS REALLY FUN!!! though the keys to attack took me hours to figure out, but i font regret spending hours on figuring it out since it was worth it!!
Really fun fighting games, 10/10
Got this for one dollar. I wish i'd buy this game full price because it's so good.
The art style, the music (Best part in my opinion), the gameplay is so well crafted.
WHOLESOME: professional wrestler shows big fan his regular training schedule (he just beats the hell out of her)
The characters are really fantastic, & the gameplay is fun & enjoyable!
Although this game can be very unforgiving at times, it has given me several hours of fun and enjoyment. I recommend all mobile players to try the original game, and the people play this one to at the very least watch a video of the mobile game.
I got this years ago was about to try and play some of my old characters come to find out it was taken way... CRAP MOVE DEV'S
Removing content from a game people paid for is unacceptable. And the fact I had to wait to leave this review so it doesn't get ignored by Steams filters is just as bad.
In the past I would have recommended this game, but due to censorship and altering/removing content I can no longer recommend this game until there is an option to go back to the unaltered version.
Sum up: A really good and pretty complicated fighting game, but complicated in a good way.
Read this if you want to hear my full opinion:
I played the Mobile version a LOT a couple years ago and really liked it, bought this cause it looked fun, and dropped it cause I didn't know how to play fighting games. But after a year of playing games like Guilty Gear and coming back to it, I realized its really good.
I play on controller so that might change my view on the controls, but this is the most complicated fighting game I've ever played. A lot of the EX moves and even Special Attacks need multiple buttons to be pressed in a very specific pattern, so I personally couldn't use most of them before getting pummeled trying. Or maybe that's how all fighting games are and learning fighting game logic from Guilty Gear is a bad idea idk.
The character designs for half the roster is obviously the main selling point of the game with "OMG HOT GIRL I HAVE TO GET IT" but there are some pretty unique and creative designs here too. For example
Peacock, a 1920's style cartoon character turned cyborg and uses Looney Toon gag's as attacks,
and Big Band is a police officer that bases their entire moveset and design off of brass instruments,
or even Ms. Fortune who can take her limbs apart like Monsoon from Metal Gear to stretch further and throw limbs when attacking.
The other characters are really good and have creative designs too, but I'm trying to say the game isn't all horny crap even if there's a lot.
So yeah, I'll probably learn Keyboard controls and still suck at this game, but it is really fun to play with friends who also came from Guilty Gear and barely understand the game.
The DLC prices could drop in my opinion though. I mean, $10 for a single character?
Overall 8/10
Gotta make up for the braindead wave of negative reviews claiming they're mad about "censorship" or something.
This is a fantastic fighting game, the art is jaw-dropping and I can't recommend it enough.
Offline: Extremely fun 2D fighter with a lot of "questionable" in-between frames, designs, concepts and relationships(not shipping stuff). First few days it's hard to pick up but, after a while you'll get comfortable with a character or two- maybe even three if your avidly invested. The character stories are well written for a 2D fighter, nothing too deep but deep enough to make you feel sympathy for some of the characters and their position in the events of the main over arching story. Worth getting on sale but full price? I guess if you want to~ Hard to say honestly.
Online: I have around 40~ hours in-game on steam, completed all the story modes on switch and I still get my arse wiped on nearly every online match- it's basically a free ticket to participating in EVO because, everyone is playing like it's EVO. Not a bad thing just very unwelcoming for casuals who don't have a circle of friends to play with. Best advice I can give: go through a character's trials approximately 10 times over, then play against NPCs trying to land said trials on moving targets THEN finally play online(7/10 you'll still get your arse whipped but better then all the time).
This game is crazy. And good.
But crazy.
It's quite hard to get into if you are planning to play against other random players.
Even if you have FGC experience.
Although in 30 hours I started to win just a tiny bit. :3
I would recommend learning a universal bnb from a nice poke and trying to play the game.
This game is both
VERY FUN
andVERY PUNISHING
Like I said it's fun: music, visuals, stories, sounds, character voices, gameplay, etc.- all this is much better than the most of modern games
And like I said it's very hard- your hands will hurt from gameplay on local normal level of gameplay.
But still if you want to enjoy the game and don't wanna become the god of timings/memory/decision_making/reaction/micro_motorics/etc, just go find some casual ppl like me and invite to play!
And surprisingly SG is alive for now(in terms of 12 yrs old game)
VERDICT
Game's worth the money
i think that its a great fighting game, i played the mobile version first and its just as good.
Pretty fun game if you actually spend some time learning. I'm not gonna lie to new players, you will get steamrolled a lot but if you do tough it out you will find yourself enjoying the challenges. The matchmaking is very questionable since it's randomized so you will get matched with people who either beat you in seconds or match with people you can deal with, with little to no effort. The only gripe I have is with the devs and the content they removed and story points they censored. I believe the customer deserves what they paid for and it sucks they have to be robbed of their product. But that's all from me.
Whoever decided to set the keybinds so that they can't be duplicated, forcing you into a scenario on keyboard where you can't even navigate the menus, and the Light punch button doesn't work between a forced player 1 and 2, leading you unable to even select "default controls", I hope your family has a nice christmas
Art, music and animations are cool. I suck at fighting games though... :(
I am not good at these types of games.
I found the characters and story very compelling. I mostly enjoyed the theory crafting and community. The world they built for this story is very unique. I would love to hear more stories told from within it.
That said, I don't know anything about what makes a good fighting game!
I have had this game for some time. I first stopped playing when the the devs berated me for wanting Assignable keys. They stated it was a game pad game I had no business or right to want assignable keys. Yea remember me? Now I see they have pulled the Woke Censorship B.S. Whats next? Pronouns and crazy gender characters? These are not kids, they are not people. It is a game made up of pixels. Focus on making a great game. NOT THE POLITICS! NOT THE FAKE VIRTUE SIGNALLING!
The animation alone is worth the price and inside there's a very deep combat system on a tag team fighter that also gives you the option to do 1 on 1's
Great game that provides the player with an in-depth tutorial to get acquainted to fighting games!
who else up soloing they filia (2/3 character teams are for nerds)
Even though I might not put up that much hours onto this game due to me lacking intelligence on remembering the moveset, I will still recommend this game to anyone who likes making up crazy combos, great settings for hitbox checking, keybinds and more.
Apparently they altered the content with censorship. Would like the option to switch between the version that I originally bought and this new one. Until theirs an option to get the content paid for originally leaving this negative for removing/altering content.
I am obsessed with this game, to it's soundtrack and story, to its finger breaking combos that make me see red.
Skullgirls 2nd Encore is a masterpiece of 2D fighting games. From its stunning hand-drawn art style to its diverse and charismatic roster, every element exudes passion and creativity. The gameplay is polished, offering a perfect balance for both newcomers and seasoned fighting game veterans. The mechanics are deep, with flexible combo systems and smooth controls that make every match thrilling.
The story mode is engaging, full of charm, humor, and a surprising emotional depth that complements the vibrant world of Skullgirls. Additionally, the robust training tools and tutorials are some of the best in the genre, making it easy to learn but hard to master.
Whether you're in it for the competitive multiplayer or the beautifully animated characters, Skullgirls 2nd Encore delivers an unforgettable experience. A must-have for fighting game enthusiasts and anyone who appreciates meticulous craftsmanship in games. 10/10 would fight again!
A very fun piece of goonerbait.
Despite all the controversy, this game is still too much fun to put down.
