Okay game, bouncy marbles galore :)
This game is wonderful.
The physics are tight.
Very addictive. Well Done!
As you can see from how many hours I've spent on this game, I really enjoyed this for casual gaming. The premise is simple, you need to match up different coloured circular gems in order to get them off the board and to clear each level completely.
The physics are nice, the gems move well and their weight affects the gems surrounding them. There are a lot of very tricky puzzles where you have to try to get a perfect score by matching special gems, and there is a good problem-solving element to all levels. It's also very replayable as you struggle to get a perfect score n earlier levels which you initially just were thankful to complete in the first place.
There are also special gems which allow you to eliminate more gems as you go along, including 'bombs' which explode surrounding gems, ones which destroy a line, and others which destroy all of one colour.
The bottomless pit level is one which makes you come back again and again as you try to beat the achievement (haven't yet - so close!) and all in all it's a great casual game with a good deal of variety.
Oh and there's some sort of story about mermaids so forgettable that I simply can't remember it at all.
I'll be brutally honest, I wouldn't have purchased this if it wasn't for the recent sale. This game has a lot of nostalgia value for me since I used to play the mobile version when I was younger, which is one of the reasons why I paid for it in the first place.
However, I don't think it's worth the price you pay for it. It's frustrating, it's not easy, the physics engine isn't amazing, I've sank many attempts into levels and quit out of impending rage and quit the game for the day knowing that I'll probably delete my progress if I keep playing and keep failing objectives and keep restarting the level til my patience runs out.
But there's something that keeps it fun despite so many negatives. It's somewhat unique and the graphics are nice and even though the gameplay is annoying at times, it's a rather tranquil experience.
To sum it up I would recommend this game if you want a unique Match 3 experience with a nod to titles such as Peggle, but I'd wait until the sales come back around.
Bad ball mechanics.
Physics-based match-3 dropping balls game. Casual but somewhat challenging. Recommended. Similar to Atlantis: Pearls of The Deep, but more simple.
League of Mermaids is a match three type game with a physics twist, so you drop balls in from the top of the screen to make groups of three or more, and as you clear the other balls fall into place possibly making more triples and clearing. The levels are fairly easy to complete, so the main limitation is trying to get three stars on each level - the second star being for beating the target time (usually fairly well set - you don't need to rush normally, but you can't dawdle either). A third star is dependent on the level - some require a chain of clears (say 9 in one move), some limit you to a maximum number of moves, and some require you to match the three silver hearts.
As you progress through the levels a few extra mechanics are added in - frozen balls that need to be matched before they can be moved, and some special bonuses you can collect causing your next ball to explode, or bounce around clearing everything it touches, etc.
So mostly the key to the game is how the physics works - and it is completely repeatable (i.e. if you drop two balls down into the same spot, they will bounce the same way, as long as the previous ball doesn't get in the way), however it can be a bit hard to predict the bounce in certain situations, but overall I found once you have played for a while you can predict what will happen fairly accurately most of the time, and it does lead to far more great moments than regular match three games - where you are mostly being congratulated for the right colours randomly falling in, in this case you can see where everything is, so the great moves are far more likely to be intentionally designed rather than luck.
In most cases you rarely need to exactly predict the bounces anyway, as most of the time you are firing into chutes, or into a curve that will "catch" the ball softly and direct it the way you want, or on to a pile of balls where the bounce will usually be fairly clear. A couple of minor exceptions are on the flat based levels, when there is exactly one ball thick, it is seemingly impossible to drop it between two balls directly, it always bounces left (or right) 2/3/4 balls, so that can be a pain. There is also a specific level where you collect a bomb and have to fire two silver hearts down the sides and off ramps to be caught at the bottom of the playing field which took me dozens of attempts to get exactly right.
So overall it is a fairly decent action puzzle game, but it could be frustrating at first until you get the hang of physics of the balls, which are both the main pro and sometimes the main con of this game compared to more traditional match three games.
An astonishing exercise in frustration.
I bought this game because I thought it might be exactly the sort of mobile-style fairly simple puzzle game that can distract my young niece when she wants to play on my fancy computer when I have to watch her. Of course, before letting the kid play something, I test it myself, and I found this game too infuriating to play to think my niece would have any fun with it.
This is a game that looks on the surface like a "Puzzle Bobble" clone, but it introduces a very, VERY dubious physics system that can cause tiny taps to marbles (I mean "pearls") to make a marble either go nowhere or fly wildly off the edge of the screen at a million miles an hour. You match and eliminate marbles when they "touch", but marbles can easily come to rest a pixel away from one another and not "touch", only to have the next marble you drop to try to finish off a connection send the middle marble hurtling away at mach 2, throwing a differently-colored marble in its place.
Worse, the game tries to be clever by making differntly-shaped boards that basically mean you have to blindly drop marbles down twisting chutes and hope that they come out anywhere near where you wanted, based, again, on that awful physics system.
This is made worse by the fact that the marker for where a marble will drop is much narrower than the marble, so I'm constantly having marbles bounce off of map tiles that I swear have larger hit boxes than they appear to have, making the game an even more random crapshoot than it already was.
That would all be forgivable if the game's level-clearing system actually took its mechanics in mind, but the game demands you clear away all marbles on a board to progress... and then introduces unmatchable marbles that require special powerups to clear... and then makes it so you can only have a limited number of those powerups (including only 1 treasure powerup)... and doesn't even make those powerups (which eliminate random marbles) actually eliminate the unmatchable pieces by default, making some boards essentially unwinnable by anything but luck.
Aren't puzzle games supposed to be... you know, puzzles? Like, where thought and planning are involved in winning, not just randomly punching a button and hoping for dumb luck to save the day?
"League of Mermaids" is a casual 3-match game with moving, colourful marbles/balls. So you just don't switch stones but drop them on others so at least three of the same kind would touch each other. When every one of them is gone, the level's finished. The levels can turn challenging wether it's by obstacles between you and your marbles (platforms, etc.) or it's by level features that make you think more about physics and movements in order to win the level (like gear wheels or mill wheels).
Also there's some story going on about mermaids and treasures but it's not very interesting and also not important to follow. Just do the levels and be hooked. That's also a hint for you if you fear the mermaids would be just too much of a girly game: The mermaids are just part of the cutscenes.
The game itself I enjoy. It's very addicting and entertaining. It's also relaxing. So all in all I call it a good casual game/time waster and a bit more fun and challenging than an ordinary 3-match game.
The gameplay is very easy, you just click to drop marbles. Not much more to say about that.
The graphics are fine and clear, not too bright and colourful and fit to the underwater world.
The sound is subtle and okay, the music's not horrible but also not exactly exciting so soon after starting with the game I also started playing my own music as background music.
When it comes to Steam features, it has achievements but no trading cards or something else.
So if you look for a relaxing, nice casual game (wether if you like mermaids or not) for a couple of bucks, this might be a good one for you.
Gets boring after awhile. Time filler for sure but it gets boring after an hour of playing.
Not your regular Match 3 game, the different puzzles and levels mean lots of variety and lots of difficulty shifts depending on the level, story could be better but it's definetly something you could waste time on the Achievements and some of the level requirements for 3 stars are very tedious and annoying but once your past them it does get better.
Overall i give it 7.5/10
My best brief review:
A match 3 game with 'pachinko' physics.
Best for ages 3-9
Still fun for all ages; several levels provide a real amount of challenge.
Game Information
"League of Mermaids" is a Match 3 game. The game was developed by Alder Games and published by Legacy Games.
The Game Review
Game Visuals
I want to mention that the visuals in the game are well done. The visuals can be adjusted in the game's option menu.
Game Audio
I want to mention that audio for the game is well done. Even though the audio is somewhat simplistic and repetitive. The audio can be adjusted in the game's option menu as well.
Gameplay
There are no difficulty game modes to choose from. All levels have their own difficulty.
There is a timer in the game. The levels can still be completed even if the time has run out completely.
The story campaign mode has three chapters with the total of fifteen levels. There are three bonus chapters with a total of fifteen levels. But they are not connected to the story campaign.
There is a zen mode. Endless match 3 modes with no timer. There is an ability to level up in this mode but it would require a certain amount of stars.
The bottomless trench mode is to see how far the player can go before the time on the timer runs out completely.
The special puzzle mode features similar puzzles from the story campaign mode.
There are sixteen different achievements that can be unlocked from playing the game. Each of these achievements does come with some requirements that need to be completed before they can be unlocked.
Miscellaneous
Final thoughts: I have found the game enjoyable to a certain extent. The replay value for the game is low. I would recommend this game, but not at the game's full price value.
If you're looking for a good match 3 game, League of Mermaids has you covered. The game contains an incredible number of match 3 boards, getting increasingly more difficult as you proceed in the story. What I really like here is that the boards are not on a grid, instead they take several forms ranging from your basic "ball pit" to free floating boards in space that require strategic dropping to solve them completely.
The story is forgettable, told by static images. A mermaid has lost treasures which means the world will be destroyed, so she has to solve match 3 puzzles to get them back. Each stage contains 15 boards, and you return a treasure after every 5th board.
The match 3 puzzles can be solved relatively easily, even the difficult ones, but to get a 3 star rating on each board you do not only need to solve it (1st star), but also solve it before the time limit (2nd star) and also match an additonal challenge for the 3rd star. This is where the difficulty comes in, since it usually requires you to match three specific gems which are scattered across the board before the rest of the board is solved.
This added complexity of trying to get all three stars is what makes the game fun and challenging, and keeps me returning to it. I've already spent multiple hours trying to perfect the boards, and will probably sink in a lot more in this fun game.
If you're still not sure what this game is like, think of a cross between Bubble Bobble, Peggle, and a basic match 3 game. Add some relaxing music and cute graphics, and you have League of Mermaids.
League of mermaids is a remix of puzzle bobble. Instead of launching bubble here you allow them to drop into the correct position taking physic into account.
The idea is great and it could have been a great puzzle game but it isn't.
What happened? You can't aim properly. Plain and simple: You. Can't. Aim.
The game does not feature any kind of difficulty it features randomness. I felt like flipping a coin trying to get ten thousands of tails in a row. It wasn't fun.
This game worth for sure the money even if its not in discount because you have at least 10 hours of gameplay. And for the players that wanna do 100% of the game its gonna take you even more .
League of Mermaids is a cute Match 3 game that plays with physics.
Really easy to learn the mechanics of the game and pretty simple to play left click and right click of mouse only .
Story is fine you need to recovers the treasures before the kraken is summoned and destroy your mermaid world.
Music is nice and quality of the world ambiance is well made .
There is 6 worlds and 3 bonus game mode to play.
There is alot of achievements for the achievements hunters ! But watch out they wont be easy in this game . You will need luck and skills or even both sometimes to get the 3 stars on each level.
Achievements are only for the 3 first worlds and the 3 bonus game modes.
I would give it 3.5 out of 5
Sorry if my english was bad and i hope you will enjoy this game :)
