The goal of Expert Rifleman is to let you gain proficiency at shooting stationary and moving targets without expending valuable ammo or barrel life. Use preloaded ammo types or create your own ammo by entering ballistic data. The simulation will let you practice shooting in different environmental conditions, try out zeros at different ranges and set the conditions under which your rifle is zeroed. Expert Rifleman features a realistic 3D environment where the user can train in scenarios not commonly available such as engaging long range moving targets and high angle shooting.
The scope reticles in Expert Rifleman are calibrated in Mil-rads or MOA and function identically to the real thing. Learn how to use a reticle to range targets and calculate hold over.
The simulation allows the user to compensate for the forces which affect the path of the bullet. Vegetation sways and bends and particles follow the wind currents. You can visualize wind direction and intensity. Compare ammunition based on ballistic performance. The only thing which Expert Rifleman cannot do is teach you how to pull the trigger!
Pick between the following ammo types or create your own by entering ballistics data:
- 7.62 NATO
- .338 Lapua Magnum
- .50 BMG
- Up to 500 user created ammunition types.
Expert Rifleman is built around an advanced ballistic calculator which calculates:
- Gravity and air resistance
- Bore angle
- Aerodynamic jump
- Scope height over bore
- Horizontal and vertical coriolis drift
- Wind drift from arbitrary wind direction including head wind
- Spin drift
- Density altitude and several minor corrections
Three types of targets:
- Mobile target
- Flip target
- Flip and hostage target
Four different maps each with multiple target ranges. You can place a target on any of the maps by pressing enter.
- The dynamic target map lets you practice shooting at moving targets.
- The high angle map lets you practice shooting at an angle.
- The sandbox map lets you place the target and set its distance, orientation and speed on a flat map.
- The 360-degree map has ranges out to 1500 yards. Users can engage targets in a 360 arc, allowing the simulation of Coriolis drift.
Internal Ballistics features:
- Adjust for powder temperature
- User defined random projectile mass and ammunition pressure variation.
Expert rifleman comes preloaded with a number of preset scopes and reticles. In addition you can easily create your own scope by loading a custom image file and entering a few variables. Scopes can use either the mil rad or moa systems.

So the game is pretty decent and better than most but I do have a few things that could really do with being sorted out. Um, editing ammo? All I could find is a DAT file with a whole bunch of unreadable text except the ammo name. I can't edit that yet can't find an option in game to edit ammo. If I have a huge list in a certain order, and I wish to change one of the rounds, I have to completely delete that round and redo it with the necessary changes whilst also putting it right at the bottom of the list which messes up the order I've put it in. The other thing is that a lot of the fields and data outputs aren't really all that well explained and leave my head scratching. For example the drag slope factor has no info as to how it affects the projectile, as to what higher vs lower numbers do. What baffles me is why using higher numbers for more aerodynamic rounds is yielding worse drop values? Or temperature at muzzle velocity...don't know what that's referring to. Another thing is that the dynamic conditions are a little misleading. I got the impression that dynamic wind implied the winds could vary slightly between muzzle and target. It doesn't really do that, it keep the wind consistent in the entire map but just randomly changes the wind speed within the prescribed limits. On its own that's not really a problem but what is up with the direction? You can't say how variable you want the direction. It just suddenly veers or backs 180 degrees sometimes and that's not all that common in weather systems. Same with dynamic temperature as I got the impression it would simulate varying temperature along the flight path and not just changing global temperature every so many seconds. Not a big deal but got me a little confused. Last thing is lack of target variety. Prior to this game I had and still do have a hunting simulator type thing for my phone that shows vitals etc and allows me to practice my shots at range. The game follows a 3 DOF model and fits my previous solvers perfectly. This game doesn't perfectly match for obvious reasons such as being 6 DOF but I have no whitetail targets for example to reference. Only the stock moving torso targets. Would love those fixed at some point as the game has potential. Don't think it's quite worth the 11 pounds I paid for it but not to say I wouldn't recommend it because it is quite addictive and really gets you into the idea of what ballistics is all about.
I recently started to get into medium and long range shooting. This is an affordable way to get practical experience with reading a ballistic chart, getting scope dialed in, practicing dope, etc. HOWEVER, this program does NOT hold your hand. The interface is a little clunky and you need to already be somewhat familiar with long range shooting concepts.
Unless you're shooting a 22, a box of even the cheapest plinking long range rifle ammo (223/556/6.5) will cost nearly a dollar per round. So, for me, this program is worth it.
This is a proper long range shooting simulator, not a game. I use this program to practice range estimation based on reticle angular measurements. That being said, I wish I could import reticle designs so I can match my real life optics and also select or import different target styles for hunting sizing practice. I definitely get that getting licensed reticles would be expensive and hard, but letting people draw their own would be a great feature. When this program is run on a computer with multiple monitors the mouse is not trapped within the game's monitor and will go over to other monitors and when you click to shoot it will click outside the game and cause the game to minimize... this is very annoying and needs fixing.
"Expert Rifleman" is not even 1 % of a game. That's a ballistic diorama, a sandbox for those weapons enthusiasts who cares how the bullet performs in the really long ranges.
It would be just a waste of money for anybody who don't ever have to consider the bullets trajectory in the real life. Now again, this application is not a game. It has some "score" system to count your hits, but other than that, there are zero gameplay interest, even for the lovers of shooting. I can suggest a freeware project World of Guns: Gun Disassembly (http://store.steampowered.com/app/262410/) which have much more of gameplay value, and ranges to shoot stuff in particular.
But as we are returning to the Expert Rifleman... Think of it as of addition to the ballistic calculator. A 3D visualisation of sniper tables which marksmen use to quickly making the math before pulling the trigger.
If it happened that you are one of the rare breed of shooters who have an interest to software like this... I suggest to try it for yourself then. By all means, it is far from perfect. You can't change your stance there. There are not enough terrains, collisions, settings for climate and gravitational forces. There are charts only for 3 calibers, and all other numbers you gotta add for yourself. But if you do happen to know those numbers, then Expert Rifleman can be software of much fun, and ammo conservation.
Simple but very detailed and technical for sniper shooting.
Would be nice be able to shoot at a papier targets. Allow adding more internal and external ballistic information.
This is not a game, but a visual ballistic computer and simulator for shooters.
Not a bad concept, but need polishing.
Pros:
- Adds all the factors that would affect real world in-field shooting. Wind, muzzle velocity discrepancies, bullet weight, coriolis effect, et. etc,
- targets are placeable at various stages, moveable and turnable to various angles
- Pretty easy to get into for anyone who has realoading or real world shooting skills
- Seems pretty accurate as a simulator at first try.
Cons:
- Not a game. Don't expect any bells an whistles, career mode, arcade shooting/sniper challenges...it's a tool
- Graphics need serious polish. I know it's a sim, but still...draw me in. They're too basic
- Scopes reticles are far too few and lack variety. You can customize and add your own, but this should have been released with a lot more already in, so guys can practice holdovers and leads with hunting style scope reticles or whatever.
- Only 3 calibres are in the sim to start with (you can add your own by inputting stats) as far as I could see - .338, 7.62, and .50 I believe.
- Audio and felt recoil, blast effects could use an overhaul.
- UI needs to be minimized a bit
- You can't walk around in a terrain. you have a panning scope view an that's it.
- Scopes should be able to at least simulate distance haze, and other visual abberations/reflections for a truer "feel". I'd like to be able to add some distortions to my custom scope view to simulate some of the less that awesome scopes on the market.
Conclulsion:
I would have preferred this as a serious rifle range mod for Arma III, where I could choose the landscape, target types, set up a map on a rolling terrain and actually choose what positions to shoot from. All the math is there. Just needs a better body. Still a good buy for those who can't get to the range.
I've never been a shooter (or wanted to be, with a real rifle) but I enjoy games that offer shooting as a sniper. Thus, I expected something significant from "Expert Rifleman - Reloaded". It claims to be the first of its kind for the consumer market, yet offers ZERO instructions or information, but TONS of options to be selected. This should be a plus, but what they mean is largely anyone's guess.
I'm having so much trouble that I've yet to find a target to shoot at, though I'm tried every mode. The movement is horrible, the wind effect in the trees is 20 years out of date. The effect of a bullet hitting is even worse. There is very little good about this game, and this will be my first refund in nearly 600 games (other than "Journey of the Light".)
Consider what is at the bottom of each screen "EXC to exit". Read it again, please.
I love realistic shooting games with bullet drop, etc... that must be taken into consideration when shooting at long distances so I thought this game was a no brainer.
After booting it up I found a very simple starting menu with few options and no descriptions. Before starting a shooting session there are half a dozen pages or so of values and numbers for different weather and shooting variables which have zero descriptions. Unless you are a big time shooter or have military experience none of this makes any sense and there are no descriptions about what they do and how those numbers affect your shots.
The price seems a bit high for the lack of content and unpolished graphics. The actual bullet flight looks almost cartoonish to be honest.
Hopefully the devs can work on adding more content to allow any player who is interested in long distance shooting, regardless of background knowledge to be able to play and enjoy this game without complicated and confusing settings.
6/10
I had really hight hopes for this one since I like to hunt but this is just extremely clunkly. You don't get a lot of feedback and the graphics are absolutely horrible. Add to that a really poorly designed interface and bad load times and you get this. I like the concept and i think with a few tweaks and some graphical polish it could be worth it. I wont refund it because im hoping it improves
