I remembered this one from back when I had an Oculus DK2. It was neat then and still is. Some people complain about the paddle being controlled by the HMD instead of your hands but you can grip the controllers and get two rackets to use instead. In fact, the best way to play this game is to keep switching back and forth between the two control schemes in real time, using whichever is better for that exact moment the ball is coming at you. I also like that your progress is saved No need to get levels and levels deep only to have to start from the very beginning next time. A classic VR game that's also a pretty cool way to introduce someone to VR that isn't a hardcore gamer.
Note: If you're playing using the controllers make sure you have a decent amount of space around you and above you. You will need to dive left and right and make overhand swings just like as if you were playing tennis. If you don't have enough room then stick with moving your head to control the paddle.
Nice neon shimmer effects in a VR breakoutgame, cool.
This game is fantastic. Using head to control is precise and comfortable. Very addictive, and I played for close to an hour without realizing how time passes. For oculus users, make sure you get the "oculus beta support" ( download from Properties ) or you will get a black screen. The best of all the 3D breakout type of games. Get the game before the sale ends on July 5!
Nice game. Very futuristic and retro at the same time.
This is more like a port from a GEAR-VR, there is no in-out/side-side recognition making this a nausiating game for most. The shuttle pad is moved only by your head also meaning you have to flail your head around trying to hit the ball. Just wish I had tried it out when I purchased it so that I could refund.
I HAD given this game a thumbs up, but I had to change my vote. I found myself not wanting to play this at all. It's basically breakout in 3D which has been done before... and VR in this instance doesn't add that much to it, except that they chose to make your goggles the controller by default. I'm guessing this was more for the Oculus crowd since they don't have motion controls yet.
The Developer kindly informed me that holding the grip buttons will activate the paddles. Somehow that makes it even less fun for me. I don't get it. Word of advice: If you do choose to use the paddles, don't play in a room with light fixtures hanging from the ceiling. If you choose to use the goggles, take a break or your neck will likely hurt later.
The developer really should have made it an option... or a toggle... instead of having to hold the button to use the hand paddles, press it once to bring up the paddle, press it again to use the goggles... simple, efficient, and unobtrusive.
But as I said before, it's just 3D breakout. With your head as the controller, your neck will be kinda sore after playing this for a while. It's not just looking up, down, left and right... it's the fact that to put a spin on the ball you kinda have to hit the ball with the paddle moving just right... so trying to spin the ball to angle it to hit the blocks I wanted is what really did my neck in.
Using your hands as the paddles allows you to hit the ball forcefully and change the speed, but that actually makes the game harder to play and not in a fun way.
Things I liked:
- chiptunes (though they weren't all that catchy)
- It's Breakout!
- There's a red and white "amiga beachball" in the game as a multiball mode.
- There are some powerups like a metal ball that goes through multiple bricks before rebounding.
Things I didn't really like
- It's 3D breakout. (I don't feel VR adds to the game here)
- They give you a LOT of lives, to the point where I doubted that I'd ever lose the game There's zero feeling of challenge unless you slam the ball into action and then you have to react to your own serve.
- The ball is rather large and so is the paddle so there's not a whole lot of skill involved here.
- Neither control method (goggles or hand controllers) seemed to feel right.
- The Slowdown powerup really seemed unnecessary.
- The controllers vibrate as you move them around... like non stop. It's like the developer said "hey, I can use haptics... I don't know what to use them for... how about if they just buzz all the damn time? Yeah I'll do that then".
[*] The first few levels are really boring and when it finally changes the stage a bit, it doesn't really change much... now instead of being a square room it's a cyllinder. WOO.
So yeah, it's not a great game. Maybe they'll improve on the game some? Probably not though. I bet they're already done for good unless there's a bugfix to do. I waited a while and came back to it thinking maybe I'd like it even more, or that with the new found info about the hand paddles it would make the game better. It didn't though.
The best thing I can say for this game is that at least it doesn't do what holoball did with the annoying voice... I can actually understand the opening narration. But I don't feel like every game needs a back story either.
I think it is a WAY COOL game. Just be warned! This game gives the player a false sense of boundaries. I have the boundaries maxed out for my sensors and inside the game, the sphere you are hitting will LEAD YOU to trying to hit it, when in fact you are about to go beyond the chaperon boundary and SMACK your controller into the wall. Yeah, I know it is my fault and all......it's just if the room inside the game would match the room you have to play, you wouldn't be playing the game thinking, "Ok, I have to be careful not to over extend my arm because I am going to break my controller! Other than that, it is pretty cool......
Amazing 3D version of Break Out (which is an old school arcade classic). 10/10
The aiming is very good on the VIVE.
I was a massive Arkanoid fan/fanatic on the Amiga, as well being heavily into the demo scene.. This game seems to merge the two together nicely. As already mentioned, this game is perfect for room scale VR on the Vive. But having to constantly hold down the grip buttons to use the paddles, wtf? Constant vibration of the Vive controllers, wtf? Vive controllers feels too much like an afterthought. It is so close to being absolutely perfect I'm about to strangle myself. Will have to relectantly put this aside for now and hope an update or a fix is on its way. I recommend following but not buying this game right now.
At first I thought this was a cheap port from the gear VR and I would have had to use my head like a Weeble wobble controlling the paddle but I was happily mistaken. Playing this game in room scale on the vive and using the tracked motion controllers is truly how this game is meant to be played. This games shines on the Vive.
My only suggestion to the developer is to make the default paddle control the hand controllers so I don't have to squeeze the side button to activate them. You can also back down the haptic feedback to occur only when a paddle makes contact with a ball.
A full game with lots of levels, cool boss fights, dazzling visuals, high energy soundtrack and makes use of the Vive motion controllers.
Slamming a super metal ball across the field feels almost like an super hero experience.
Must-have for people with a Rift! 3D breakout ftw
