Continuing directly from where Act I left off, this now adds an extra character of Silvia to play, some sections where you can switch between the two.
The game is slightly longer than Act I, I only got stuck on the final puzzle. Like the first part, there aren't too many locations or objects, so the puzzles aren't too difficult.
Act III is currently in development at time of this review.
I can totally recommend the game! I have goosebumbs and can´t wait for the third part and I am so thrilled that there will also be a fourth!!!!! Pls support and play the story of James and Silvia so we can see more of them :3 Perfect game for lovers of classic point and click games!
Enjoyable point and click adventure game
Pros -
Engaging story
Good animation
Good characters
Cons -
Overuse of dialogue
1 or 2 instances of pixel hunting.
However these did not detract from my overall enjoyment of the game
This is a review of Shadows on the Vatican Acts I and II, as I find them inseparable. This series has quickly become my game of the year, even playing it after so long, and right on time before the release of Act III.
What does such a late release mean? This is not an indication of laziness. Quite the contrary: that can mean only one thing. This is a work of love, of passion, of huge investment in time and resources because this story WANTS to be told, and HAS to be experienced. This is a story beloved to the producers and storytellers, so much so that they have battled many an obstacle in these years to make it happen. This is a game that wants ITS VOICE to be heard.
As you load the game and the title screen appears, you are treated to one of most sublime game soundtracks I have ever heard. I mean Lara Croft’s theme in the original Tomb Raider level of epic. The music in Shadows is simply jaw dropping. I have the full OST in my playlist and I often listen to it, alongside Hans Zimmer, Dan Gibson, Carmina, Bach. You can find the full OST on Youtube as well (and I recommend listening to the track "To Silvia").
Let’s talk about the story and dialogues.
Inspired by the essay "In nome di Dio", Shadows on the Vatican is a thrill-filled story full of intrigue, mystery and some of the most deep and memorable characters I have ever met in a video game. James Murphy and Silvia are well rounded and beautifully designed — seriously, the comics-style, hand drawn characters are heart-stopping beautiful — and they have a deep personality. The plot will capture you and drag you through the two acts, leaving you wanting for more. There are tons of historical facts, trivia about Rome, the Vatican… there is so much to learn!
One of the best parts of this game are the dialogues, the thoughts of the characters, their motivations, their shady past and uncertain future. Every character evolves through the story and I can’t wait to see where the next two acts will take us.
Puzzles and gameplay are classic, as one can expect from a point and click adventure game. There are inventory based puzzles, riddles, as well as some more difficult puzzles based on reading, numbers and deep thought. Some of them may be a tad too difficult, so don’t feel too bad if you have to check a walkthrough once or twice. It’s worth it! However, I also found some of the most fun, original and quirky puzzles as well, winking and giving a nod to typical cliches of point and click games and turning them around for the fun of it.
In this respect, there are TONS of easter eggs, funny achievements, references to the world of gaming, and to other games developed by other software houses.
In my opinion, the only reason why we don’t see a flood of overwhelmingly positive reviews is the fact that some players are reluctant to give it a chance before the four episodes come out.
That is exactly the opposite of what we should do, as it is with our support NOW that can make a new act possible, that energies and budget can be allocated to the telling of this story.
Last but not least, let’s talk about the elephant in the room: the graphics. Not the comics-style drawings of the characters, but the 3D backgrounds and character models. Yes, the graphics is a bit rigid, and can feel outdated, even though it NEVER for a second bothered me or distracted me, and I actually find the backgrounds quite well detailed and well designed.
But we must keep this in mind: They were other times, there was no Kickstarter to bump up the budget of an indie company, there was no Steam to advertise, there was no indie trend, and the engines available were quite different.
I don’t want to hear it. Of course the graphics is a bit outdated. However, it shouldn’t affect or distract us too much, considering that we live in the era of masterpieces like Undertale and The Return of the Obra Dinn, purposefully reduced to bare bone graphics, for one reason or another. Whatever the case, we should be open-minded and accepting enough to give it a fair chance.
If you do it, you will be rewarded with amazing character designs, a jaw dropping soundtrack, memorable character, and a beautifully told story.

Finished act 2 right after finishing act 1, well, well, well.. I want more, honestly devs are good at cliffhangers.
Honestly I don’t have much to say. Game is good, short and I want Act 3.
P.S. Mario is true MVP.
A great followup of act 1. It's safe to say that if you enjoyed the first chapter, you're gonna dig this one as well.
The devs also attempted to do something new in a few cases, like a couple of puzzles that must executed in a sort of real-time in order to knock out the bad guys. It does its job to convey the urgency of the situation, and in case of failure, the game restarts from the latest wrong move. It's a good tradeoff: it's not annoying for the player and it allows some "action sequences"
Act 3 hasn't been released, and I'm not sure if it will. As long as you're aware of this, and are ok with it, this is a decent value on sale.
Alright. Its a nice sequel to act I. The story ended on thrilling note. And the end is not here yet. Lets see when the act III will be released.
pros
+ great looking pre rendered background graphics
+ conspirancy story getting more intriguing in this chapter
+ when you click to space, hotspots is highlighted. No need to hunt for pixels.
+ easy and enjoyable puzzles. there are also inventory puzzles you can combine some items
+ comic magazine style cut scenes looks good and stylish
+ two playable characters
+ mature and fluent script
+ cold, mysterious, complicated and some sympathetic/funny cast of characters such as Sylvia, Cardinal Brehmen, Mario and fortune-teller.
+ some good voice acting
+ orchestral soundtrack matches the mood of each scene
cons
- animations slow and people walk slowly
- game is short and episodic. you have to wait a few years to play another episode.
this game decent and improved continuation to first chapter. story and characters definitely getting more complicating, deep and intriguing in this chapter. i m looking forward to play chapter 3.
More of the same just as in Act I. More bad dialogue and voice acting and more stuff that just doesn't make any sense. A bunch of useless talking that is very boring. This one does start moving in a more interesting direction, but it is still so damn boring! And it still repeats everything you do. Explains why there is no ActIII so far as it has now been (as of Nov 2018) 3 years and counting. Thank god it was cheap.
Not reccomended at all. Spend you money on a root canal. Will probably hurt less.
I liked Shadows on the Vatican acts 1 and 2 when I played them 2-3 years ago. I still hope they finish the series. That's why I'm sort of writing this to encourage the developers to finish what they started. I hope we'll see act 3 soon, but I'm skeptical as it has been a couple of years already.
Some people have complained about bugs in the game, but I don't recall any serious bugs in it.
Shadows on the Vatican Act II: Wrath 2015 is sequel to the point-and-click 3d fully voiced adventure Act 1 of the Shadows on the Vatican series. This game while almost as short if not shorter than the first game, is rage inducing. I never know an adventure game can be this frustrating. If you scroll through all the recent negative reviews you will see the phrase "trial and error" quite a lot, and they are correct to use that phrase to describe this game. This game, while looking a bit prettier than the first game, is insufferable. For example there is a scene where you need to tie some kind of knot by looking at the pictures to tie it correctly, first you see 3 pictures of the start of three different kinds of knot, you pick one, and then you are shown 3 more pictures to choose from, and then you pick one of them again, and then the game tells you you are wrong, and then you are back to the first set of three pictures to choose, and this whole thing you have to choose correctly for 4 times, so it is basically 3 x 3 x 3 x 3 that is almost 81 clicking, you will not have to click exactly 81 times because when you are wrong at the second or the third set you will go back to the first but it is just as maddening, and every click waste you 1 to 3 seconds. Do I look like a boy scout to you developer? And then there is the Hangover remedy mixing thing, just like this trial and error thingy. And there is a part where you have to listen to a voice recording at pause at the correct frames to get the clue, talking about this makes me angry. All I am trying to say is, this game is completely impossible to completely without a guide(from the get go), and that is a very bad thing for an adventure game. The puzzles are stupid. The developer said there will be four acts to this series but after playing this I will not be buying anything else from them and I don't think act 3 and act 4 will come out at all in the future because of the bad sell (unsurprisingly).
EDIT: I found another game that is far better than this in almost all aspect that I would like to recommend to you, go try out Lost Chronicles of Zerzura! That game is what a good point-and-click game should be.
Act II was good - comparing it to what I recall from Act I, it was a step up in terms of humour. Playing as both characters was cool, and there were some challenges but it was still quite easy. I'm eagerly awaiting Act III.
seven acts for seven deadly sins? if so, i hope they'll update the graphics.
its a nice litle pointnclick, with a big part of dialogues, mostly easy puzzles, and a few hard ones, for the price i realy cant complain. the only negative i see, is that the story... is slowly developing and is somewhat boring to me :( but still entertaining enough to keep me going, hoped it gets better in act 2, didnt realy happen, so i hope for more tention and exotic places in act 3 :)
6/10
I will tell the same thing that I told for act I.
The game is very good. I enjoy playing it. It's about 4 hours to play. It's classic adventure game with logical puzzles. The puzzles are not too hard, but just hard enough. The ambient music is awsome, I love music in the capena church. The actor voices are good enough. The story is great and good implemented with puzzles. You can read some books to know more about the story. The dialogs are good and classic written. I love the inventory. Its easy and functional. If you try to give something to someone and it's not correctly, then it appears red x in inventory, cool staff.
Can not reccomend. The game is extremely slow to load and crashed within 20 minutes. I don't get it. The graphics are all static single framed and there should be no burden on your graphics card or CPU based upon the minimum requirements. My system far exceeds in every aspect but It was painfully slow to load from one scene to the next.
Finally that black screen between scenes became permanent after about 20-25 minutes in. DONE. Got my refund.
Brilliant little game, best adventure experience in years and very moderately priced.
My only concern for this series is the development rate. The devs seems to go for a bi-yearly release cycle, and that is a long wait for these 3-4 hour chunks of greatness, it also means that we have to wait a long time for the conclusive fourth episode.
This game is fun to play, has an intriguing plot and can be a bit of a pain sometimes in the solve-the-puzzle-department :)
Can recommend this game though !
This game has a Broken Sword feel to it - so fans of those games will love this. Can't wait for the next installment!
