Currently the game has 10 levels. Various parts of the game imply there is more content then currently exists. The art and music was good. Map layouts are randomized which adds some replay value, though the layout does affect the difficulty on some maps. In the hard difficulty you have to be much more strategic with what tools and plants you pick. Even with the right strategy executing can still be difficult. It took me 11 hours to beat the game on normal and hard difficulties.
There are a few things about the game I wish were improved upon:
1. Controls were very frustrating at times. This is particularly true for various things like using the hoe and replanting fruit. I was stumped on figuring out the hit box for the final boss as well. I wish there was some sort of highlight over what tiles your tool will be used on. I don't like how throwing fruit will behave differently depending on what is near you.
2. Some mechanics were not explained well. I played through most the game on medium difficulty not knowing how to replant apples and oranges.
3. The main menu is confusing. I had to figure it out through trial an error. I wish there was text telling you what the options did.
Okay. So. I have a bit of a chip on my shoulder when it comes to what seems like arbitrary character deaths in games. So maybe I'm being too hard on this. But there seems to be at least one arbitrary death zone on each level.
What I CAN legit complain about is the controls. They are not good. I believe the word commonly used for this issue is "floaty." I've played through a level and a half of this and, quite frankly, I have not encountered anything compelling enough to put up with the controls any further. The game play is iffy. The challenge is sparse until it becomes instantly fatal with little of no warning. I have not gotten far enough in to know if the story is worth it but I get the feeling it's not. The artwork is not bad per say but I can't say it's particularly good either. It's a style I'm not normally fond of so take that criticism with a grain or three of sodium.
Overall, I can't recommend this. I PERSONALLY dislike it enough to be asking for a refund. But, objectively I can see where some would enjoy it. Just not me.
Short but quirky puzzle game.
I discovered this game through a GameJolt demo for Patchman vs. blue squares, and holy shit, I do not regret it. This is one of the few games that I've played that has an enjoyable story AND simple, yet fun, gameplay. The character you plas as, Patchman, is fairly memorable, unique, and likable. I highly recommend Patchman vs. Red Circles.
I also enjoy the fact that the Sheeple look like a cleaner version of that muppet that lives in a trashcan from sesame street.
the game's story might leave more to be wanted, but it makes up for in gameplay, don't get me wrong, i've played only on normal and the later levels will not hold back their punches (take level one for example where there is one threat but is easy to trigger) and you'll lose any progress with expection of ruined land (if it becomes too much just reset the level and try again) and may your skills bless you if you decide to play on hard,
but it's never unfair to the point of rage quiting, almost every level gives an item or tool you can use to fight against the odds, and it feels great to go against those odds and beat the level
if you want a short game that challenges your observation and reflexes i recommed this hidden gem of a steam game
Works well on ubuntu linux, no issues at all. Controller works well, and the developer made a special patch to handle disconnects. (See comment below!) Patchman's gameplay is a bit loose, a bit silly, and not immediately obvious. Still, I liked this game a lot better than similar titles that aim for humor. This one seems to have a lot more polish and a more serious attempt to get the level designs right. That said, there is a lots of gameplay repitition: non-stop growing fruit, avoiding drones, and moving that fruit. The game's real strength is the charming main character and even the dystopian game world. I appreciated the message, especially through the cutscenes portrayed within the in-game comic book pages. This is a different type of game, in some ways a throwback, in someways trying out a new style. There is a demo on the KS page, and you can try a slice of the gameplay. My recommendation is try the demo first before purchasing.
Can I has an open-world version of this? xD
I took a chance on this one, which popped up in my discovery queue. I can now say it's my favorite game in the "stealth farming" genre, and I can recommend it to those who are looking for something weird and endearing. The graphics style reminds me of good old DOS games or early Windows 95 ones such as Lemmings Paintball. The soundtrack is excellently chosen to complement the style.
If you're put off by stories about freeing the brainwashed masses, ones named "Sheeple" for that matter, I wouldn't worry about it. This game doesn't hit you over the head with some obnoxious message along those lines. Instead it draws you in and charms you, taking the timeless values of care for the environment, healthy eating, and not being controlled by the media or machines, and presents them in the most playful way. This game makes me want to eat more oranges.
To date, only one episode is complete out of four, and the game design has a lot of rough edges. Expect to stumble through the first few levels and deal with a steep difficulty curve, even on normal. But the developer is listening and working on it, and the future is promising.
I really like the concept: the sheeple are being brainwashed by TV and copious propaganda and it's up to you to free them.
Instead of picking up power-ups and weapons, you have to grow them (as fruit which you can eat).
I'm really looking foreward to seeing what's in store for Patchman in the future episodes. The comic strip is a great new feature and I am curious about what sinister plan the Drones have going on...
The art style is unique and the music fits the levels (and comic strips) quite well.
A great adventure of pixelly goodness. The game might not be all there (currently alpha 0.5), but you can tell it's going to be a blast! Can't wait to try my clandestine gardening skills.
I only upvoted this because "made on linux"
and because it is very nice!
Updated Review:
If you want a game that is quirky and different then this is the game for you.
It's a little hard to describe/explain the game. The main levels involve tearing down posters and filling fridges with healthy food for brain-washed-junk-food-eating sheeple, without getting spotted.
However I can say that this isn't a game for everyone it's defintely an aquired taste (for lack of better words).
Mind-bending, bizarre, FUN game. I'm playing the Linux version and this is just blowing my mind. Indescribable, retro but new, beautiful soundtrack. Stylish.
Basically, PLAY THIS GAME.
Possibly the first Linux/SteamOS timed exclusive?
Very quirky and unique game. Personally I love it!
You Start off as Patchman, who sets off to Rid the world of junk food, and feed people homegrown fruit, so that they may literally ascend.
While the levels aren't huge, they can become difficult and requires a bit of planning to get through each level.
Tip: if you get lost in the first level, just turn on Hints under the Settings menu,
Update: Since I'm currently (8/11/15) the sole review for this game, I decided to add a bit more objective info about the game.
The game is a sneak style game, where you're required to grow items and sneak them into the sheeple's fridges.
Pros:
Decent consistent artwork style
Great music
Objectives are straightfoward in most levels
Requires strategy to progress through levels, making it engaging.
Cons:
Camera will automatically zoom back into the player after being zoomed out.
Since it is Early Access, the game is currently limited to 5 levels.
At times, it lacks conveyance of in-game mechanics.
The level will totally reset if you die.
Levels do not have any checkpoint system, making recollecting the needed items a pain if you fail.
Neutral:
With the limited set of levels, the game uses difficulty as a way to limit the player's progression. While the first 2 levels are straightforward, some players may find this game either too difficult or near impossible. This is especially true in the last two of the five levels, which require a good deal of strategy and/or luck.
