About the Game
Gunpoint is a stealth puzzle game that lets you rewire its levels to trick people. You play a freelance spy who takes jobs from his clients to break into high security buildings and steal sensitive data.To get past security, you'll need to make creative use of your main gadget: the Crosslink. It lets you see how all the security devices in a level are wired up, and then you can just click and drag with the mouse to wire them differently. So you can connect a lightswitch to a trapdoor, then flick it when a guard walks across to make him fall through.

Solid
The game is completed. That would have felt good if I hadn't just taken a seven story body slam.
A short and brilliant game. I come mainly for the hacking gameplay but stay for the story and quirky writing.
I like. :)
Simple great puzzles, slowly ramps up the difficultly and rewards actual thinking (outside of the gun you can buy) where a lot of the games mechanics and systems want you to think encounters through. You can't just brute force them like many "stealth" games.
Because you're so fragile to damage you have to actually stealth around.
I look at Gunpoint and I say to myself, "yes."
An absolute gem
Gunpoint is a short and sweet stealth game that's around 80% puzzle, 20% action. You're a private investigator who infiltrates various restricted areas by remotely hacking security systems. For example, instead of a motion detector triggering an alarm when activated, you can rewire it to open a locked door instead. The puzzle lies in the variety of security devices that can be creatively rewired to work in your favor -- mostly to manipulate or incapacitate security personnel -- and the order of which you execute these hacks.
There are numerous ways for a player to accomplish his/her goal on each level. Sneaking past security is as viable as neutralizing all threats on the map. One can even unlock a gun and the ability to literally kick down doors if they wanted to go loud. With the more aggressive play styles, the game rewards the player's fast reflexes, hence the "20% action" classification above.
The story is convoluted to an almost absurd degree given the context of short puzzle game. It involves selecting dialogue options and branching story arcs. The was a time when one of the main character's dialogue options was to break the fourth wall and reply "I lost track of this story several levels back..." I personally wasn't invested in the plot, but given the gameplay driven nature of this game, it didn't have a significant impact on my enjoyment of this title.
Overall, Gunpoint is fun 4-7 hour puzzle game with interesting gameplay mechanics. I recommend picking it up on sale, forgetting about it, then loading it up as a palate cleanser after finishing a more complicated game with a much longer play time.
Fun game, reminds me of Mark of the Ninja, although far from being as polished. Screen resolution is kind of a lack luster to me. Since the game does not take modern resolution into account, this kinda forces the windowed mode, which, in turn, make the character very very small. Although the game was nice, this ruins it a little bit for me.
Cool game
It is like a good vanilla ice cream, it's delicious it's good and it's over quickly
it's easy to speedrun too, and the achievements aren't that difficult
10/10
a very fun game, you won't get much playtime out of it but the core mechanics and puzzles are enough to keep you occupied for a while
Came for the hat, stayed for the game.
fun
hilarious game that requires some thinking
Pretty good
The story is neat, the gameplay is cool and fun. + you get a free hat in TF2 (Crosslinker's Coil)
its ok
The game does what it promises and implements it wonderfully. A neat and fun little puzzle game, though it can be brute forced and cheesed to a certain extent. (8.4/10)
short but fun
Really cool indie game with a fun story
Short but sweet
A fun little arcade style game, reminds me of Elevator which I used to play in the arcades. quite challenging but not frustrating.
Sometimes, bad luck hits you like a multi-story fall into a solid plate of glass - literally.
Sometimes, good intentions spiral into a web of murder, lies, corruption, and vengeance.
Sometimes, you have to choose between saving the innocent, or punishing the guilty.
But hey - I got to kick a door off it's hinges and into someone's face!
Fun mechanics, engaging puzzles, and hilarious writing! 10/10 little indie gem!
Loved this game!
A short and sweet game about a freelance spy getting caught in the war between major arms dealers. The game has unlocks that, if you spend your earnings extremely poorly, you cannot unlock them all (but thankfully, you can buy and refund most of the unlocks at any point in the game to your heart's content).
Gunpoint is the first of the Defenestration Trilogy and, while it doesn't aim for the great heights of the last entry, it's an excellent puzzle game, with great character and humour, and is more than worth your time and money.
One of the games on Steam that I come back to replay once or twice a year. I just really enjoy the idea of an action puzzle game.
Great game but i am badge hunting but even though i got more badges it doesn't show on steam for some reason
Short, fun and really interesting.
A masterpiece.
Achievement Hunting Rating 3/5
Fun platform puzzles with snarky story elements. You will need to play through a couple time to get all achievements but the good news is that it's a short game about 6 hours to get everything. Might need to use a guide unless you want to play through a lot to find all the achievement paths on your own.
This is like a flash game, albeit a good one. I could see this right at home on one of those free online games sites, thus one would obviously question why its on steam and costs money. It should be free! Well, it isn't. I bought my copy on sale for about 2 bucks and advise you, dear reader, to do the same. Not worth playing again.
Good little game, with interesting and fun mechanics.
Gunpoint is a fun and little toy of a puzzle game where your ideas are almost as bad as your execution.
Recommended. A unique and creative puzzle-shooter hybrid with a delightful noir aesthetic.
Quick, name another game that falls into the category of "retro sci-fi neo-noir puzzle/shooter/stealth hybrid emphasizing non-linear problem solving." Actually, take your time. I'll wait.
I may not know every game in the world, but Gunpoint manages to be something that a lot of titles claim to be: unique. It crams a lot of mileage into a simple concept and simple design, a combination that sounds like it should make a simple game but instead creates a beautifully complex puzzler with a combat side. Oh, with an outstanding soundtrack.
Is it really that good?
Actually, yes, it is. This is actually two games seamlessly wrapped into one. On the one hand, you have a relatively simple stealth title with a combat sublayer. You don't want to get into combat, mind - at least not a fair fight. Ambush your enemies and knock them out (or, if you're particularly bloodthirsty, kill) if you must, but the pinnacle of performance here is to be a ghost. Get in, do what you need to do, and get out with nobody ever knowing you were there. Are you going to do that completely harmlessly? Probably not. Fortunately, there's a bevy of less-than-lethal means to help you along. That's where the other half of the game comes in.
Alongside the stealth-combat side of the game is a parallel game that presents the same levels to you but as a puzzle. You have the ability to rewire the building you're in on the fly and make its systems work for you - but only if you can come up with a plan for how. Yes, light switches toggle lights... but you can also make them open doors, call elevators, and do any number of other things. Daisy-chain devices together to execute complex strategies, trick guards into trapping themselves or knocking themselves out, use an elevator to trip a sensor to unlock a door - the things you can do vary from the simple to the wildly complicated and it's all up to you. Do you want to craft a complex technical solution to let you ghost your way in and out of an area or would you rather just ambush the guard and punch him out? It's up to you, your reflexes, and your patience for puzzle solving.
The writing that pulls the story along is perfectly crafted, offering interesting characters, compelling storylines, and a lot of humor. Not too much, and it's up to you just how snarky you want to be, ranging from Sam Spade to PG Wade Wilson levels.
Gunpoint also has a fantastic soundtrack. It fits in perfectly with the retro neo-noir setting. Even better, like the game it's two soundtracks rolled into one - whenever you go into hacking mode, the jazz-inspired noir music shifts to a synth-styled version of the exact same music as befits a technical hacking minigame. It's brilliant.
Okay, but there has to be something wrong with it
Alright, alright, you want criticisms. Fine.
The story is fixed. You really can't affect the outcome very much in any given direction, so you don't replay it for the story, you replay it for the puzzle. (Oh, and you can replay earlier missions any time you want and see if you can best your scores. That should've been in the good things section.) but yes, you really don't have any meaningful control over how the plot progresses.
It's a fairly short game. I've played through it about three times now (most of that time offline and Steam didn't count it) and a complete playthrough won't take more than a handful of hours. But they're good hours.
And... okay, here's a genuine gripe. This game hands out money and upgrade points with an eyedropper. Affording the upgrades for your character is tedious and slow, but it's part of the design and keeps you from being too powerful too fast to maintain the challenge. So it's really good design.
At $10 it's a little overpriced, particularly since the developer has several newer games out on the market (Gunpoint is nine years old), but the game is so good that it still feels like you're getting your money's worth.
The Bottom Line
This is a very, very good fusion of a stealth combat title with a technical puzzle game. It rounds the experience out with excellent pixel graphics, an exquisite soundtrack (one of the few I've spent money to buy, in fact), and a story that, while fixed, contains characters, events, and enough comedy to hook you early on and keep you running with it to see where it's going. And let's be perfectly honest: no other game has made falling through windows this much fun.
Recommended for anyone who likes stealth combat and technical puzzles. And smooth jazzy soundtracks.
Ah, a new game from Tom Francis has dropped. After finishing it, I guess I have to replay the Gunpoint again!
Maybe that doesn't matter. Maybe all that matters is... that I now have the ability to kick down doors.
Silly but a bit short.
Defenestration is my favourite word
Fun game, interesting puzzles.
Resolution is a little iffy to adjust and doesn't exceed 1920 but that's details.
The game is great, worth the money.
A fun little puzzle game, in which you play as a detective that commits all sorts of atrocities to security guards in order to solve the murder of one of his clients.
While I got this game on sale, I would pay full price for this game in hindsight.
Brilliant dialogue with some great gameplay. The gameplay makes me feel like a spy with all of the cool gadgets in the game. 100%ing the game took me just over six and a half hours and I thoroughly enjoyed all of it. This game won't leave you with any new outlook on life but I don't think that's the goal.
I would give the game a 7.5/10 and would absolutely recommend it.
Mission just about possible.
If you use the gun you're playing the game wrong and probably suck at life.
A fun puzzle game, I found it pretty hard (which is good or bad depending on what you want)
If you like puzzle games and laughing then you'll like this. I did and I do. A euro well spent.
Short and sweet action/puzzle game with a solid story. Totally worth the price especially if on sale.
Interesting concept but rough.
The polish required is missing. The mechanics are interesting but not intuitive, the design is very limited - there's one or maybe two ways to complete a level. The combat and controls feel wonky and are not precise. The dialogue is subjectively cringe, often pretentious. Suffocating.
This debut title hits few (a novel mechanic and an incredible autosave system) but misses many, you might see a spark of clever that makes a smirk escape but at the end, you don't feel awesome.
Get it on a deep sale.
Short but very fun
Fun little infiltration game, simple to handle, fun and straight to the point. Some movements can be a bit clunky but nothing too major. Dialogues can be funky
Only problem is how short it is; i want more !
I've had this sitting in my library for years and finally gave it a go. It's really fun with interesting puzzles and has a great soundtrack. I'm a sucker for good soundtracks.
