We have added "Officer Play," where players experience the life of a Warring States officer as he advances from retainer to Castle Lord and then on to Daimyo.
Enjoy a variety of play styles. Conquer the land, advance in status and position, or turn the tables on your superiors. The choice is yours.
■Carefully develop your territory with "Garden politics"
Some places have water sources. Some have highways. Some have other characteristics. Juggle these characteristics as you develop your territory as you see fit.
Choose the facilities to build and enjoy watching your territory bloom due to your management.
■Witness strategic battle from the officer's viewpoint! "Evolved Battle"
Experience the battle from the viewpoint of a single officer. Experience the strategy of deep, thrilling battlefields, using different "formations" and "tactics."
We've added a new "Camp Log" system, allowing various missions to occur during battle. The battle will change in real-time depending on the results of these missions, allowing for even more dramatic battles.
■Intense battles, realistically displayed! "Siege Battles" "Naval Battles"
We will portray full-scale siege and naval battles with newly revised visuals. Experience the intensity of real battle with siege battles using cannons, naval battles using armored boats, and more. In addition, we will bring even more spark to the battles with a plentiful variation of castles to host these sieges.

If you like RTK XIII's RPG elements, this game is similar. You get to do some city building early on, and carry it onto your main game. All about the "All Officer Play" mechanic from KOEI.
I made the mistake of listening to the reviews saying to get just the SOI version instead of this. Dont get me wrong i loved SOI, but i wanted to try this out because the thought of playing a subordinate appealed to me despite the warnings from others. So after trying it out i instantly got engrossed with running my own town and completing missions from the daimyo. I loved the change of pace of being just some underling moving up the ranks.
I didn't see or got bothered by any of the so called negatives that others pointed out, and the little changes this game made from SOI is so tiny that you wont even notice it. Being an officer serving a daimyo adds such a great layer of gameplay, and you actually interact alot more with other officers in the clan, feeling like you all are working for the same goals. I went from just a lowly officer being put in charge of running my town being tasked with contributing to the clan effort, being promoted several times along the way to a regent, given command of several castles and fortresses with a mission to conduct entire wars against specific clans on behalf of the daimyo, i enjoyed this game alot more than i did SOI, if you like a bit of roleplaying aspect in a grand strategy game, i definitely recommend this, you will not regret it.
it is so far a great purchase. for fans of the classic NES games i would highly recommend this as a starting off point in the series

I like this game. Mind you, the last Nobunaga game I played was the original (I also played the very first RTK). Why do I like this? You get to be the officers (or even make your own officer). I like having the option of not being the big wig when first starting. It's kind of relaxing just plotting along, build your town/village and then venture off when your Daimyo asks you. A couple of switching clans later, persuading officers, and all of a sudden everyone is asking you to join them, or your retainer is telling you to strike out on your own. (With save scruffing, you can find out if breaking out on your own was a good idea - which wasn't for me... =P)
I wish there were a few more subterfuge options like in TotalWarShogun - I'll need to go back to that game to see if you can just be an officer to start (kind of doubt it). It's just that that game felt like you have to really micromanage the fights. Here, if you don't want to, you don't (outside of the first few battles).
I enjoy this game. Yes there's a newer one with better graphics, but I don't think you can be 'just' an officer there.
