Only playing it because you can BE the xenomoprh. Don't care about predators and marines. 2 hours playtime while writing this. 100% of it has been spent running around lost in the maze at the very beginning of the very first mission. Have managed to get out 3 times. Each time, I immediately got set on fire and died, had to do the maze again. I'm playing on easy mode. I would like to nominate myself for Dumbest Xenomorph of the Year, please.
I must say I like the newer AVP on Steam better because I don't have to restart from so far back when I fail, but there's so very few games that let you be an Alien so I'll play it just to crawl around on the walls.
This game gave me the most surreal IRL motion sickness in which I got lost in my own house and forgot where the floor was.
Unique and tasteful. Adroit, but at times vexatious. Will satisfy even the most singularly refined connoisseur of exquisitely wrought hoary pewpew games.
This one takes me back, A younger me played the hell out of this game pre-steam.
Playing the Alien is fun, the wall crawling mechanic was revolutionary 25 years ago, but is a little clunky by today's standards. It is a lot of fun to use that mobility paired with aggression to kill groups of human NPCs before they can react.
Playing the predator is difficult but manageable, although I felt like his cloaking mechanic should have fooled the enemies a little.
But playing the marine? Terrifying. Utterly terrifying.
You are fighting for your life, and it is probably a losing battle.
fun
Bought for 60p in the Spring Sale. Still a solid game even so close to its 25th Anniversary. Wish I had the Big Box version as a collectors item. Will play the campaign again at some point on here but mainly purchased for the Skirmish / Wave mode. Even has controller support which I was not expecting (no rumble feedback though). Gameplay feels tight, only game I've played that gives you a gun but still makes you panic at the sight of an Alien due to making them speedy, powerful and also make the acid blood be dangerous to you. Wish the sequel to this one was on Steam, maybe a future Nightdive Studios remaster?
cuz fun af
Unless you want to venture away from the comfort and safety of steam for the fabled AvP2, you have two options if you are an AVP fan:
AVP 2010 and AVP classic 2000.
Iv'e already reviewed the former and now I want to review the later, but for quick context, AvP 2010 was a rushed game that only has quality graphics to save it's grace. It had complicated controls, insulting incentives, and a abysmal multiplayer scene. The campaigns are nice and atmospheric, but they are short lived. AVP classic 2000 is not that game. While classic 2000 is not without her flaws, I compare the two time and time again and in an embarrassing display the 25 year old game beats the 15 year old game without contest.
-2000 has MORE weapon variety than 2010. (minigun, dual pistols, Skeeter, MARINES CAN GET A MOTHERFUCKING JETPACK IN THIS GAME. LARP AS BOBA FETT AND REIGN FIRE UPON THAT FACEHUGGER PIT YOU NEED TO ENTER.)
-2000 has MORE challenge than 2010 in it's campaigns. Creating infinite spawn points for enemies to prevent camping as opposed to just giving more health and damage.
-2000 has what are called "cheat modes" that reward the player for doing odd things by giving odd modifiers for levels. Mostly for shitposting purposes and getting a good giggle. For example there is a cheatmode called "slugtrail" that effectively chops off all alien's legs and forces them to crawl with their arms. Kinda wierd, but better than the cheatmodes 2010 gave. Oh wait!
-2000 gives bonus missions as a reward for playing on the hardest difficulty. All of them have a nice theme and VERY fun.
-2000 has MORE options with modding. 2010 won't let you touch anything bar textures. You can actually spawn bots with 2000.
-2000 doesn't waste your time with meaningless collectibles that reward you with nothing. I would rather have no collectibles at all than collectibles with no reward. The first doesn't lie to me.
All while still giving the nice horrific feeling even if that feeling isn't in the form of high end shadows and lighting. It accomplished it's task with less and I salute it for that. When I look at the live action "command and conquer" acting on the screen I can't help but smile at how cute they are.
That said there are some small issues that I'm going to mention, but overlook for the reasons above.
-I wish there was a proper melee attack for marine. Preds and aliens have It's mostly just "don't get hit" with the fast movement. It reminds me of oldschool chivalry. Marines don't get melee at all, but if you're trying melee as a marine you screwed up somewhere.
-still no up front skirmish mode, but you can play as predator in this one and you have a better variety of enemies. You can spawn bots in this game as said before so maybe if you got creative....
-Campaign maps are very easy to get lost in. Normally I would cry bad level design, but steam guides exist so if you don't use them that's on you. The maps themselves would make for a cool multiplayer map, but alas it hasn't been done yet.
-Multiplayer does have some weird things going on with it regarding it's connection. It has more mode variety, but I'm worried about numbers seeing as what 2010 had. I have yet to actually play it yet, but the community shows more things to do than just various forms of deathmatch.
Cheap, but good game. Far better than the game that would be made 10 years later. 7/10.
this game is a well crafted, well loved, wonderful piece of art. When you look at it, don't be skeptical about graphics, be skeptical about haters. The gameplay is fun and compelling, and features multiple great campaigns (alien, predator, and colonial marine) when playing each campaign you feel like how it would feel to be in the characters shoes, as a predator you feel like an awesome warrior, as a Xenomorph you feel like a terrifying monster from a movie, and as a marine, you feel constant terror. Each campaign takes 2-3 hours so be ready for a quick game, unless you play on the max difficulty, where i yet to have dare tread.
With all that in mind 10/10
Played this a bunch when i wore a younger mans clothes 26 years ago. Whats really exciting about this game was that the encounter with the Xenomorphs were often times completly unscripted by the game. You could be hiding in a ventilation shaft in some corner of the map and a Xeno would crawl in at random and tear into you. Weak graphics by contemporary standards of course but an intense horror/shooter experience thats worth trying out today
Absolutely terrifying game which holds up remarkably well! Overlooked classic FPS from this period, and certainly worth the low price for Alien, Predator and old school PC gaming enthusiasts!
It’s funny that when I first played this game, I hadn’t yet discovered the Predator movies and didn’t really understand who this goofy alien in front of me was, though it piqued my interest. At the time, I was a huge fan of the Alien franchise and desperately wanted to play as the xenomorph. I love this genre, and visually, it looked stunning in screenshots (the graphics were genuinely impressive for the time). Plus, you could do so many cool things, like crawling on walls and ceilings.
Unfortunately, the Alien campaign didn’t click with me. Maybe I just didn’t fully grasp how to play it properly, but the other two campaigns... oh, they were fantastic. And all three were incredibly different.
As a human, it was tense and nerve-wracking, walking in the dark, listening carefully, and watching the blips on the radar, knowing death was always just seconds away. As the Predator, it was pure power fantasy, where you could calmly wipe out entire human bases and alien hives.
Overall, it was an absolutely remarkable game for its time.
It's buggy and poorly designed. Key items sometimes simply won't respawn, forcing you to start a level over from the beginning. Baddies sometimes respawn endlessly, often in groups, which makes the game 0% scary and 100% tedious. Some baddies can one-hit you, sometimes with zero warning and instant reaction time -- this can only be overcome through memorizing the outcomes of trial and error. And since you can only save a certain number of times per map, this again makes things exceptionally tedious.
It's a bad game, and not in a way that can be excused by appealing to its age.
The best Director's cut.
Worth it for the predator campaign alone but they all play different and feel like different genres. There's even a robust multiplayer to play with friends. Makes you feel how much the industry has gone down hill since back then. Only criticism is that the Alien levels are a pain and switching weapons sucks.
I've been playing this game since it first came out. I come back to it every now and then. Overall great fun
great fun game only problem is that the control's take a minute to get used to and the server's have just shy of nobody on em so that's to bad but otherwise great game the predator campaign is my favorite.
really fun
Great.
ABSOLUTLY LOVE GAME AND ITS CHEAP PRICE DEF RECOMEND
Cool game
I have played this game since its original release. The skirmish part of the game is the best. Would jam this for hours with my Dad over network.
The Virgin Alien vs. The Chad Predator.
Personally not a fan. I prefer the remake from 2010. If you're into Aliens vs Predator however, this could be a good purchase. It's just not for me.
Old School FPS to the theme of Aliens vs Predator oh yeah, total Nostalgia.
Eerie 2000's graphics and Xenomorphs were simply made for each other. No other game in the series captures their movement and how creepy they are quite like this. They roam the map searching for you in dark corridors and hallways, and you could find them anywhere at random. Each mission could play out differently each time.
I prefer the Predator campaign, was done very well. But also playing as an Alien and using the Tail whip to kill Marines is extremely satisfying.
Very fun game, in which you can play as three species, with different campaigns and gameplay.
But even more fun is the survival mode. Lots of maps, some of which remind of the movies, hordes of aliens of all kinds. This mode is fun as single-player, but also can be played in co-op, which we enjoyed quite a lot with the friend.
And there's deathmatch, of course. It's okay-ish. Fast-paced, very simple. No bots in this mode, though.
It's better than the latest AvP game in everything, except maybe the graphics.
There are patches with HD textures in case the shots on store page aren't looking good.
So it's worth checking out even today, especially considering how cheap these classic games are compared to today's titles...
P.s. WHY THERE'S STILL NO AVP-2 ON STEAM, I'M SO TIRED OF YOUR BS!
Great game.
The single player level design is actually pretty great
its interesting, i THOUGHT this was the one i played on pc ages ago but it turns out i played the sequel. the game is still great mind you, just with the one issue of being lost so damn often! and it doesnt help with everything being so damn dark too. the game is great though, well worth playing
An all time classic, not too hard on the medium skill. And it runs well on modern hardware.
ooohhh boy this is kino
I dunno.... I know people love this game as it's a classic but didn't do it for me. The 2010 version is much better in my opinion
Oldie but goodie. After 24 years of this game being around I ALWAYS come back to it when I download Steam. Highly recommended. Each campaign offers a different play style and strategy and this is the best AVP game, in my opinion.
YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEES!
Best Old School Aliens game EVER!!
I remember playing this game growing up and couldn't get enough of it, it was and is still one of the best simplist aliens games out there it is essentially a alien survival seeing of how long you can survive and kill the horde amount of aliens that try to over throw you and your friends that you are playing with while playing as the Marines that take part in the story line.
In my opinion I recommend this game solely on the fact if it is on sale just for the purpose on how long that this game has been out since day of release.
The game is entertaining but it has some flaws:
- The objectives are clear but it is sometimes extremely hard to know how to complete them since there is nothing to guide you, for instance, the objective says, enter the laboratory, but it doesn't say how, turns out you have to destroy a switch set in a random place in the area
- The saving system, I don't know whether I misunderstood but it seems there is a limit of number of saves you can do and, as I understood, there is no overwriting an existing save and every time you get killed you are taken back to the beginning of the game, you have to load a saved game and select it, it doesn't take you back to the last checkpoint if you get killed
- Difficulty, it has 3 difficulties, easy, normal and director's cut (hard), I played first on normal but realised that was being killed pretty easy, like when you are headshoted on an FPS game, that easy, changed to easy and it was the same =/
Still, I give this game a positive review.
really fun game, wish the second was on here as well though.
YES IS GOD
My dad was happy revisiting this
Surprisingly worked without an issue on a Windows 11 laptop. I'd only ever played AvP 2 and figured it's about time I try this one. I expected a step backwards but not this much. I used to stare at the game box in the store in the 90's wishing my PC could handle it back then, turns out it isn't all it is cracked up to be. The aliens are annoying and everyone moves super fast like they're on some sort of illegal chemical. It takes the fun out of the game when you can barely hit anything because they jump around impossibly fast. I guess the sequel got the speed more naturally because I never missed this much in my life. It's also the AI's habit of jumping at the player's armpits. Ugly and super dark graphics even for the time. Even when you increase gamma then it becomes either bare-able or unbearably bright with night vision. The only reason I recommend is as a museum piece.
Too bad AvP 2 is stuck in ownership hell, preventing it from being played legally through steam.
a classic scifi fps anyone who loves the predator or alien series will love it
It's called "Classic" for a reason.
Ho adorato la versione Retail, giocando in Lan in Skirmish e la campagna Marine + quella Predator. Da recuperare se non giocato ai tempi, un gioco ancora gobile nonostante gli anni.
Perfect game. You will die - a lot!
But you need to download the original FMV's with professional actors for the best experience.
It's pretty good.
This is THE AvP game. The best one ever released. And gives me the best nostalgia and childhood memories
Remember:
Keep spamming flares and listen the motion sensor.
Stay frosty.
Los niveles son muy confusos y no hay una guia o mapa
10/10
Pretty solid game but certain aspects of it hold it back from being masterful, this game is pretty much Quake but in the Aliens universe (plus predator lol), the story is simple, kill Xenomorphs, and if you're the Xeno... kill humans, I don't even know the Pred's story to be honest lmfao, he's juts killing both marines and xenomorphs. The main negatives I have are the fact that for the main menu screen, you have to use either arrow keys on your keyboard, or the D-pad on the controller, and the menu screen is locked at a low resolution, that changes to your desired resolution once you play the campaign itself.
The fact that once you complete a Marine mission, the next mission you lose all of the weapons and gear you obtained from the previous level,
Alien campaign is garbage. It's nauseating and I have no idea what you're even supposed to do.
The Predators campaign is pretty cool, but not as cool as the 2nd game (which is not on Steam) and AVP 2010, but it's still fun to go crazy as the Predator.
So if you want to play this game... you're buying it to play as both the Marine and the Predator, but this is overall a classic that holds up fairly well
