Onyx tells the story of Rowan, a witch with a bad temper, who embarks on an epic 30-40 hour adventure to recover her stolen ring, which holds deep sentimental value. The game features side-view battles, 100% visible encounters, three difficulty modes, and plenty of humor. While the plot offers an intriguing setup and there's clear effort in the art and battle design, the game ultimately feels lacking in polish and depth. The gameplay is repetitive, with clunky controls, and I can't recommend it based on its current state.

Honestly this game is pretty fun.
I put it on easy mode though, because there is a tad much encounters forced on you.
I like the self aware humor of how hard it is to find objectives.
Specifically a girl in Hexewasser (a big city) that excitedly tells you about how much her city sucks and how you can't find anything that you're looking for.
I got this game through a crafting coupon with like 80% off, so for my price it was pretty fun to check out.
I'm not sure about paying full price for this, but then again, I haven't finished the game.

I am 32 years old.
My ex-wife and I have a daughter together, and we adopted our son together. Both are now 4 years old.
When we were going through our separation, I felt lost and unhappy. I was self-destructive. One day, I was so angry with everything spiraling out of control that I punched a concrete wall in a moment of overwhelming emotion. This resulted in breaking my fifth metacarpal in my right hand—the hand I worked with, played games with, and used to carry my children to bed—the hand I desperately needed to ensure I could continue providing.
Upon learning the severity of the self-inflicted damage, I became almost suicidal. Keep in mind that just a few months before this, I was the happiest man, with no history of depression or anxiety. I had never experienced anger outbursts, nor was I the type to break down and cry, but I was in a tough situation that truly prevented me from seeing the light on the other side.
With nothing better to do, I looked for a game I could play WITH ONE HAND while recovering. Somehow, I stumbled upon this game and read some of the comments. I decided it was worth a try... I must admit I didn't beat the game, nor did I play as much as some of you. In fact, I may have played this game for only a day or two. That being said, after doing so, I had a new joy and hope for life. I managed to leave behind the pain and suffering that had been thrust upon me. I could experience the joy and happiness of other people. I relaxed for 5 ♥♥♥♥ minutes listening to this music, long enough to realize that I would be okay.
After realizing this, I turned off the game and went back to work. My hand hurt a lot, but I was motivated. I stopped feeling so sorry for myself and became the father I needed to be at that moment, not the weak boy I was behaving like.
Today, I am close friends with the mother of my children. We don't fight, argue, or say hurtful things to each other. We are parents and friends.
Now I have 3 children. My third child is, wait, ALSO 4 YEARS OLD. The woman I am with was going through a very similar situation at the time of my separation, and we just unexpectedly stumbled into each other's lives. We have been dating for a year and are very happy together.
Moral of the story: you never know what life has in store for you, and if I had given up when all odds were against me, I wouldn't be where I am today. This silly little game helped me realize that.

RPG Maker strikes again!
Onyx is one of hundreds of low effort retro-pixel RPG Maker asset/construction kit flips spamming the Steam catalog, made with the RPG Maker video game construction kit... in their own words, "Our easy to use tools are simple enough for a child." Like all RPG Maker "games", this is essentially a bunch of low quality/canned assets from RPG Maker coupled with a cringeworthy high school anime club fan fiction.
As with all RPG Maker games, the poor quality engine displays badly in fullscreen and doesn't have full HD support or any graphics tweaking options, making this unacceptable for any dedicated modern PC gamer. The point can be made that the intention of RPG Maker is to make demos and small games to pass around friends, and shouldn't be used for "professional" game development.
This time Andorlea/Warfare/SimProse/whatever other shell account this guy uses to try hide his identity has once more stamped out a painfully generic copy + paste RPG Maker asset flip. Just like this "developer" doesn't actually do any game development, they also didn't do any plot development, this is a ripoff of an anime called "Tales of Berseria". A bad rippoff. It's horribly basic, riddled with grammatical and spelling errors, full of stock copy + pasted RPG Maker assets... no real game development has taken place here, this is just a cash grab, it's shovelware polluting Steam for profit. This "developer" has dumped over 100 copy+pasted RPG Maker asset flips onto Steam, and keeps pumping out minimum viable product RPG Maker asset flips as rapidly as possible to try gouge gamers.
We must ask why this ongoing pollution has any serious value for gamers or the gaming industry. This kind of cash grab construction kit shovelware from bad actors like Andorlea gives amateur developers a bad name. This pollution takes marketing space away from genuine indie developers who are doing the right thing, and making real games instead of copying+pasting premade assets in a children's video game construction kit. It makes it harder for gamers to find genuinely made games. This pollution is harmful to Steam, to gamers and the gaming industry.
Like most RPG Maker shovelware and asset flips, the game features extremely low quality copy + pasted 2D retro pixel art, looks awful, and has even worse gameplay. RPG Maker is an absolutely terrible construction kit, and never results in games of any reasonable quality or value to gamers.
Reviewing SteamDB to check how popular this game was with players reveals a surprise... there's a very healthy spike in player counts for the game. But this only appears around the same time that trading cards were applied to the game... so this is just card idlers getting their cards and moving on. A closer look at the numbers shows the game just has a couple of players every week running up the game and idling it for cards, then deleting it. We must ask how it benefits gamers for there to be so many games like this, with no merit as a serious game, that only generate sales from people idling and selling the trading cards.
Onyx has the greedy, cash grab price of around $5 USD, it's not worth it given the defects and shortcomings with the product, especially considering the sheer number of completely free, much higher quality games on Steam. Gamers who want a good retro JRPG experience would be better off playing the originals, like Final Fantasy, Star Ocean or Chrono Trigger.

Fun game if you bought the guide book
This is a very enjoyable RPG. The fights are fun, though they tend not to be too challenging on easy mode. (They still can get challenging real fast if you make a mistake. I intend to play this again on normal mode.) The best part is the dialog. The heroine is incredibly sarcastic, selfish, and quick to unleash her sarcasm on friend and foe. I only paid $0.69 for this game, and Onyx is more than worth it at that price.

Good old school grinder with plenty of secret rooms and hidden items everywhere.
This game is an interesting concept. I mean, it has potential, but... I'm not sure about it. Let's be clear: I bought this game because it has Aldorlea's name on it. Aldorlea tends to put out some great engaging games. Thing is... I think this game needs a guide. Or at least some direction as to how your witch is supposed to get to town... maybe I went the wrong way, but I seem to be several maps deep in a forest of creatures that only threaten me when they gang up on you in droves...
I mean, the witch seems interesting enough, and she makes many a wisecrack. The fact that you can rename her helps some, too. But still... I'm not sure I'm going the right way (and said witch is about level 10 at this point)...
For now, I cannot recommend this title.
This game suffers from the exact same problems michaelishastitch mentions, plus the keyboard controls are glitchy sometimes and there is a bug when you try to use shift to toggle run/walk.
An rpg that takes you back to the old school style of gameplay (that I personally enjoy very much), this offering tells the story of a witch (Rowan or whatever name you choose) that has been robbed and left for dead by a mysterious thief who is part of a larger group of very bad people with evil designs on the world.
And, as the story moves along Rowan meets other characters that join her on the overall quest to set things right.
As with all of these adventures the story itself is fundamental to the success of the game, and this is one that is interesting and well told. It is direct enough so as to keep the player on track, but there are plenty of diversions and secrets to investigate and discover that you will stay busy and involved. It has that "one more area" pull that the successful titles seem to have. I intended to just take a quick look, and stayed in over two hours.
Art work and music are pleasing with an assortment of scenes and themes that help propel the game.
Battle encounters are side view with some creative and interesting monsters that have not been seen before (and I've played a lot of these).
The overall mechanics are good, with easy controls using either the keyboard or the mouse.
The game appears to have a very good length. As I indicated, I'm in for over two hours and can see that even though there has been much to do, lots to explore, many characters to talk to, and several battles to fight I am just getting started ---- and that's on easy mode.
So if you are a fan of these games, you don't want to miss this one ---- it is reasonably priced and will take a big chunk of your game time. Recommended.
On a whim, I picked up this cheap RPG that came out not even a week before writing this review. Now, I'm against the idea of people charging anything for the games they've made in RPG Maker, but they rarely charge more than $5-$7, which I suppose isn't objectionable. What is objectionable, however, is Onyx.
Onyx is about a world where witches are a regular part of life, but are being hunted down and slaughtered like lambs by a rebel sect known as the "Nimrod Brotherhood." Yes, that is what they're called. No, I don't believe they're named after the Biblical Nimrod. I think they're named Nimrod because it's a JOOOOOOOOOOOOOKE.
That seems to be half the reason for the game's existence, really. There can't be three lines of dialogue without some character or other cracking what they must think is the wittiest jest in their lifetime, and while some will get a chuckle out of you, others fall flat on their face. Not helping matters is the lack of any editing or spellchecking going into the product before release, leaving horrendous typos everywhere and sometimes incomprehensible sentences, problems that could easily have been fixed prior to release.
That's another problem I have with the whole RPG Maker business model. Due to the ease of cranking out games when you have very little to do yourself aside from place assets and write a story, it creates an environment where you could easily release two or three games a month, given enough free time. With that capability at your fingertips, it can become easy to give in to apathy, and start cutting back on things like QA testing or caring at all about the products you sell your customers.
Speaking of not giving a shit, the game focuses on a character named Rowan, though you can rename all playable characters anything you see fit within the 8-or-9 character limit. Rowan is Velvet Crowe from Tales of Berseria. That's her character. A poorly written Velvet Crowe. She's joined by a character who is basically Komoto Raynar from this site, a mother and daughter with serious familial issues, a Mystic Knight from Final Fantasy V, and some other character I couldn't be bothered to play long enough to meet. None of them are interesting enough to get invested in, Vel- I mean, Rowan is a selfish witch, and they are all groan-worthy at various points.
The maps you'll be spending most of your time travelling around are some of the clunkiest and poorly designed maps I've ever seen. Back in my Ar tonelico review, I threw some serious shade at its maps, but I feel I now owe it an apology. At least Ar tonelico had maps with rules. Onyx has no rules. One bush might block your progress, while the very same bush in a different location you might be able to pass over. Sometimes the ground covers up half your character's sprite, as if they are slowly sinking into the abyssal quicksand that is this game. Take two steps and they are suddenly freed, allowed to suffer the torment of fourth wall breaks and petty intra-party drama. This will occur even if you are standing on the exact same kind of floor tile after moving.
Battles are just a visual nightmare. Your party appears as RPG Maker sprites, obviously, but enemies are these weird, watercolor portraits superimposed over Earthbound's battle background. They look horrendous, have a tendency to blend together or hide each other, and, given enough enough enemies on the screen, can even impose themselves over your own character sprites. And once you have a fourth party member, you might not realize it, because the UI is so tall and the characters are situated in such a way that the UI will cover your fourth member. It is negative fun to get into a fight in this game. Anti-fun, if you will. It actively sucks joy from your life.
You're allowed to save anywhere in the game, but outside a tent early in the game, there's a save point. It has no reason for existence. I can only assume that an early version required save points, and they failed to dummy them all out. It's extremely inconsistent.
Near the end of my play time, I also stumbled across The End of Ti- I mean, a magical museum that is not totally a ripoff of Chrono Trigger right down to name-dropping Melchior as the inspiration. It definitely also does not have the Hylian shield (which can be seen in other places within the game, as well) and Prince of Persia's scimitars hanging in a hallway. This game is wholly original and will not fall back on using nostalgic images in order to garner favor from its players. I hate this game and my life because of this game.
I don't understand why this exists. I don't understand how it has the right to charge money. But since it is charging money, it deserves to be criticized like anything else we have to crack open our wallets for, and even at a $7 price tag, this one is not worth your time or money. Even if you are an avid follower of RPG Maker enterprises, steer clear of this one.
