An excellent throwback to older games that doesn't restrict itself to older storytelling techniques -- the narrative (and the meta narrative) are excellent, the characters are a lot of fun and having surprising nuance, and it's overall a great experience
While I liked the writing and the start of the game it gets a bit boring as you progress. I was also hit with a bug where my key bindings were no longer recognised and since I was already bored by then I could not care less and I uninstalled the game.
Interesting story, fun gameplay, big world, good game. Combat is easily cheesed in most cases, being able to reliably AoE blind almost every monster in the game, making you take no damage. Otherwise, fun. About 12 hours to complete the story and most of the side content, but it seems that a few things are entirely missable and these are indeed tied to achievements.
Amazing 8-bit game. simple but still gives a bit of a challenge. Very nostalgic like the old final fantasy games.
I recently played on Deck and had a very nostalgic and entertaining time. Looking forward to jumping into 2.
If you like 80's retro games, you might enjoy this like I did. It was short and fun. I liked the story and simplicity of the item/battle system. There were just a few side quests that were not overwhelming. They put some interesting twists into the game which made it fun. To the negative, I thought the random encounters were a bit repetitive and tended to be more annoyance than challenge. The character and enemy battle sprites could have used a little more effort. I'm not sure why they had such poor enemy sprites, it was not reflective of the overall detail in the game. I enjoyed the battle system rock/paper/scissors idea, but it felt a bit limited in the end.
Overall it was a good play, and although it had its limitations, it was an RPG maker game and if you are expecting a Dragon Warrior NES type playstyle, you will enjoy this.
Great game i liked the mage a lot
It's a very simple JRPG gameplay-wise. Like a gameboy version of a Final Fantasy 3-6.
If the simple combat system doesn't turn you off, there's a fantastic journey to be had here!
I wouldn't normally touch an RPG Maker game. Hats off to the dev for creating such a great, well told adventure that had me intrigued and captivated!
Will It Steam Deck? Yes! (With Custom Mapping)
8-Bit Adventures 1: The Forgotten Journey Remastered Edition pays homage to some of the earliest 8-bit JRPGs and, while falling flat aesthetically at times, manages to encompass the adventure in an enjoyable narrative and solid gameplay.
What I Liked
Story: While adhering to its roots aesthetically speaking, the narrative goes well above and beyond its inspiration by way of interesting, developed characters, an uncanny threat, and an interesting (albeit foreseeable) twist towards the end.
Gameplay: Short but sweet dungeons with branching paths and lots of meaningful loot to discover. Tons of side content to explore (a must for achievement hunters). The Red-Blue-Green element system is simple, but works well enough to encourage some strategy in encounters.
Aesthetics: Besides one point mentioned below, the presentation is solid.
What I Disliked
Hidden Damage Numbers (Steam Deck): Apparently a non-issue for PC players, playing on Steam Deck hides the damage values in combat, making it impossible to gauge how attacks are doing against enemies. The developer is aware of this bug but unfortunately has yet to solve it.
Buff/Debuff/Ailment Spillage: There is a limited amount of space reserved for combat enhancements, which can make tracking multiple buffs, debuffs, and ailments more difficult than it should be.
Stats Not Explained: While in many cases true with the game’s inspiration, a lack of explanation on what the various stats affect (DEX, etc) is always disappointing whenever the gearing process revolves around it. Difficult to tell sometimes whether Armor A would be better than Armor B.
Inconsistent Graphics: Not a stab at the 8-bit style whatsoever (I dig it), but some assets feel deliberately stretched/magnified to fill more graphical holes rather than simply creating different assets for them. The end result is an uneven quality of graphics that can be, at times, a bit jarring.
Overall Opinion: GOOD
Based on a BAD, OK, GOOD, GREAT rating scale.
Played entirely on Steam Deck.
This game delivers a nostalgic RPG experience with its classic pixel art and turn-based combat. The engaging story and charming retro graphics capture the spirit of old-school adventures. It’s a great choice for fans of classic RPGs looking for a fresh yet familiar journey.
First off let's talk about the elephant in the room, the graphics for the actual areas is really basic, to the point that it's missing perspective and can be distracting. The combat is also very basic, there's a rock paper scissors aspect to it but that's about the extent of anything novel. But if you can get by all that this is a fantastic game. The actual sprites for the characters, while retro, look pretty great. The music is top notch as well. But the standout is the story. This story is interesting the entire time, the pacing is excellent. Just when you think it's out of tricks it comes up with something new, including some meta commentary. Give it a try!
More of a prologue
Still very good though. There's a twist here that blew me away.
8-bit Adventures was such a wonderful trip down memory lane with twists that were not expected from a game of its expected release era. The characters were a delight to experience how they react. The combat still leaves a bit more to be desired but the way they incorporate the colors in combat is an interesting twist on the classic formula. The chip tune music is some of the best I have ever heard. A must play if you love old school-meets-new. I am very much looking forward to diving into the sequel and what it has in store
It was a fun little game. Decent job at dialog, and changes of dialog when you progress in the story. Few minor bugs that should be fixed (airship bug).
