I wish it were "fun" rather than tedious. The "puzzles" often require a walk-through. At which point just go watch a play-through as it would be a better use of your time.
As an example the FIRST BOSS requires you to do something that you had never done previous. Stop time during a monsters attack. Nowhere was this even hinted at!
Not only that, but interactables only glow when you get close to them. There is no chance at foresight, seeing a thing and thinking "Ah, I'll need that later." No. You either see it when you need it or you die.
Is the story worth it? I don't know. Dark souls has more exposition than this game.
Recommended if you hate yourself.
Pretty much anyhing I dislike about it has already been said. The game has nice atmosphere even though it is incredibly depressing, but that's kinda the point.
But man, the controls are horrible. Having to dodge and weave through a pretty tight maze with a firefly thing that randomly bobs, weaves and accelerates inconsistently while sometimes shooting beyond your input is frustrating. And not in the good skill based frustration way of games like Super Meat Boy, where I can only put it on my inability and can practice it. But the randomizing of the whole thing means practice doesn't help as much as you would think it does.
It is also very low input in the sense that one button, does a lot of things, depending on where you aim, but the aim doesn't always work the way you want and quite often when I wanted to make Mion sit down instead I accidentally opened a door which led to a several seconds long animation. Followed then by the same animation the other way around to go back where I originally came from.
If you have very high frustration tolerance, go for this. It's not really a bad game necessarily, but it took all the fun out of it for me personally.
I played this game a few years ago but never really gave any comment on it. Lately I have noticed the mixed reviews by players. For those who are wondering if the game is worth it or not, I would say yes.
This game, like The Rose in the Twilight, is a visual treat for you. Art is great, soundtracks are beautiful, story is good and puzzles still pose a challenge without being too difficult and time-consuming.
However, if you play this game on pc without a controller like I did, you will have some difficulties because the gameplay of htol is quite clunky w' mouse and keyboard, which I believe to be the main reason why this game received many negative feedbacks.
I liked the way this game tells its story, the soundtrack is fine and it sure is a unique side-scrolling puzzle game; I'll give it that much.
However, the gameplay is actual torture. Everything feels slow, RNG is rigged against you and finishing a stage feels like arriving at home after a dentist visit - it has this "Finally it's over" feeling of relief, and leaves you exhausted.
The 100% achievement journey includes a collectathon for the true ending, beating some stage specific challenges you probably missed on your first run and analyzing game recordings to flawlessly beat a boss.
Overall, this may be ok on sale as part of the spooky bundle. On its own, I would not recommend this.
- This game requires the precision timing of games like Super Meat Boy while having none of the fast-paced thrill.
+/- Weird choice to depict a child getting slaughtered in various ways, but that is more of a stylistic choice I just don't like.
- Bad editing and visual design plague that game's otherwise good art.
+/- Music is decent, but there isn't much of it.
One of the game that caught my attention more than 10 years ago on PSV. Unfortunately, the interaction between the firefly and heroine is clunky and unresponsive. Which is infuriating for platforming that requires slightly unforgiving timing.
A dark and gloomy yet charming fairy tale, featuring exceptional design, captivating art style, innovative mechanics, and challenging gameplay.
