"Through the Woods" offers a captivating dive into Norwegian mythology, making its storyline one of the game's strong points. As a fan of folklore, I enjoyed how the narrative unfolded, exploring themes deeply rooted in Norsk culture.
Visually, the game presents a stunning, dark, and immersive atmosphere that complements the story well. However, there are significant graphical issues, including a major glitch at a certain point in the game and minor glitches throughout. Despite these flaws, the overall atmosphere added to the game’s eerie, unsettling vibe.
Gameplay-wise, "Through the Woods" ran smoothly most of the time, though it occasionally felt a bit dull. My expectations for horror games are quite high, having played titles like "Blair Witch," "Alien: Isolation," and "Dead Space." Compared to these, "Through the Woods" falls short in delivering constant thrills and chills.
While there were no standout moments in terms of scares, the game did intrigue me with its folklore aspects. The audio design was decent, and I experienced the game in both English and Norsk (with subtitles). Some of my Norsk-speaking friends pointed out incorrect translations in the subtitles and found the voice acting in Norsk to be emotionless and bland, using Oslo dialect.
The game's difficulty level is quite low, and it's relatively short, which may not satisfy those looking for a more challenging experience. The primary drawbacks are the glitches and the game's brevity.
Overall, I'd rate "Through the Woods" an 8 out of 10. It's an interesting journey for those who appreciate mythology and a light horror walking simulator. However, if you're seeking a happy ending or are uncomfortable with themes like child death, this game may not be for you.
This game doesn't exactly impress, but I appreciate that it doesn't rely on cheap startle tactics and it also doesn't claim to be anything more than what it is. Which... considering it is the end result of just under $44k on kickstarter, I think it deserves a pass. It's pretty well done for the first game of a young studio on such a low budget. The animations are stiff and range from stilted to comical and I think the graphics would have greatly benefited from a more stylized approach than yet another tired attempt at realism, but some of the monster designs are intriguing - my favorites being Hati & Sköll, and the witch of the mire.
Unfortunately, none of the characters you get to know are likable or compelling, and the ending contradicts and upends the story it was built upon.
All complaints aside, it is an easy and short game that employs horror elements without jumpscares. There's no combat and no puzzles. All you have to do is determine what specific way to run from the new monster threatening you... crouch and sneak and hide? Shine your flashlight at it? Or sprint blindly down whatever path is available to you? And sometimes that's all I really want to do.

Boring running simulator, no challenge at all, suuuuuper buggy and a complete waste of time. I can't believe the ratings on this game is as high as it is.

- Some of the graphics just looks awful (especially the water and the background landscapes)
- Glitches and bugs (visuals and errors like sudden stops of the game)
- The story is a bit of a mess
- You dont have any real feelings for what happens to any of the characters
- Some of the voiceactors are below par
- The creatures are not really scary, and some just look weird
- It would be better going for first person view, rather than third person
- Very short (over in 2-3 hours)
I must say I was a tad disappointed when I played this game, because I had such high expectations.
Dont get me wrong though, its quite good, but I hoped it would be great.
Some of the graphics should have stayed back in 2000, it just looks awful. And there are some bugs and glitches as well. The story and feelings for the characters is also a bit of an issue. If this doesnt scare you away, the game has some good features, like the well designed forest, the soundtrack and the creepy atmosphere.
So all in all, I would say its worth a playthrough, even with the issues its got.

Through the Woods is a third-person psychological horror game, but unfortunately, it falls flat in several areas. The plot lacks excitement and may feel dull for many players, while the characters, including the protagonist, fail to leave any lasting impact. In fact, the main character can come off as a bit annoying, making it harder to stay engaged.
Gameplay-wise, it's more of a walking simulator, with minimal interaction or challenge. While the mechanics are straightforward, they lack depth and may not hold the attention of players looking for a more engaging experience.
On a positive note, the environmental visuals are well-executed, creating a decent atmosphere. However, good visuals alone aren’t enough to carry the game.
Overall, Through the Woods was a letdown for me, and I wouldn’t recommend it. If you’re looking for something gripping or memorable, you might want to pass on this one.
Change of pace is always nice. Run and try not to get caught!! Story is okay.
How this game was made on a budget of $43,833 baffles me, it has some awful voicework and overall terrible execution in just about every aspect. It's a full blown scam full price since it barely even takes 2 hours to complete, the ending is rushed but the story is very boring so not that important. There are thousands of better indie horror games out there for a fraction of the price.
TL;DR
Save some money and buy literally any other indie horror game.

Way too overpriced for the length of 3~4h depending how clumsy you're with hide and seek, so grab it from a heavy sale.

First, I want to tell you about the plot of the game. The premise is thrilling. However, I'll just give you a hint about the game. I don't want to spoil your journey; you have to enjoy every moment of this adventure during your gameplay.
A young mother travels to the western coast of Norway. In this cold and spooky country, the protagonist has only one goal: to find a missing child.
The story of this woman will be mixed with events of her past and you will find out more about the disappearance of her son little by little. Besides, the story will intertwine with the myths of Norse folklore. Will you be ready to face scary creatures to discover the truth? If you have the persistence of a mother who has lost a child, you can overcome any obstacle.
A dynamic narrative that makes the game exciting:
The story of "Through the Woods" will not follow the classic narrative canons. I found it exceptional the choice to give this horror adventure a dynamic narrative. What does that mean?
Well, not all plot details will be revealed to you immediately. If you want to know more about the child's disappearance and what happened in the forest, you'll have to be brave. Why? Because you will have to explore ALL environments of the game. Only this way you'll find different objects that are going to turn into more clues. Moreover, you will unlock new things that will help you understand the mysteries of the game before you get to the end.
I mean, if you want to find out more, the game will satisfy you by giving you what you want. Otherwise, you can settle for the few plot crumbs that will be revealed to you gradually.
I'd like to give you a tip as a gamer: try to complete the game by exploring it to the maximum. That way you can experience the full adventure this title wants to convey to you.

It has a pretty simple game system. Even if you are not a tryhard gamer, you gonna feel comfortable with this video game.
As I said before, most of the time you will have to explore the different gaming environments. At your disposal you'll have a flashlight that you will need to investigate in the dark. That's right, the darkness gonna be a constant and unpleasant presence.
In fact, in the darkness, ravenous creatures will hide and wait for the right moment to attack you. Watch out for the trolls, disgusting lurking monsters that will do anything to catch you.
You have to remember that you will get in the shoes of a
young mother. Simply put, you will not be able to defend yourself against these monsters. Hey, you don't have an arsenal like in the "Doom Eternal", so what else you are supposed to do? Exactly, RUN for your life!
"Through the Woods" mixes elements from interactive graphic adventure to survival horror. The result is a wonderful game that will keep you glued to your PC until the end when you discover the shocking truth.
Through the Woods: lights and shadows (literally):
Light and shadow are very important in this game. The team of developers worked well from a graphical point of view, creating phenomenal delusions. As you play, you will notice that light and shadow form fascinating images. Well, some illustrations may also frighten you.
Regardless, this made me appreciate the work that developers have done. They were good at creating a creepy but also magical woodland. At times, you gonna feel an ethereal, almost dreamlike sensation. I felt a whirlwind of emotions during my experience.
However, I couldn't help but notice some minor flaws from a technical point of view. Now you understand why I named this paragraph light and shadow, don't you?
In particular, I found the movements of the characters slightly mechanical. I thought they could be more fluid. In short, it is an element that does not ruin the gameplay. Anyway, it is bad to see the protagonists move unnaturally. After all, nothing is perfect, is it?
A constant psychological distress:
At this point, I want to focus on one of the things that has struck me about the game. It is a horror, but you will have to understood that it is not a classic horror. The fear that "Through the Woods" instills in the player is psychological.
As you advance through history, you will experience a steadily growing anguish. You will find yourself in this natural, murky, dark environment that will swallow you up completely. On the one hand, this perspective can frighten you, but on the other it made me use my brain. This game leads the player to fully identify with the protagonist.
"Through the Woods" can be seen as a metaphor which represents the continuation of life after death, even when it seems that the whole world collapses on us.
I think it is also appropriate to describe the pandemic period that we were experiencing in the near past. We were in a difficult situation and everything seemed dark around us. Of course, the hope is that after crossing the forest we could "save" ourselves going on with our lives and leaving behind the dark forest.
So, we're going to bite the bullet, we're going to hold on, and we're going to get through the woods!
