Pixel Star is one of those games. It's basically a 'play until you die' game, where the whole idea is just to run around shooting stuff. I picked it up half off and I'd say my money was well spent. It has enough complexity to keep you engaged, it's very pretty, and the controls are smooth. It's less than the price of a coffee at starbucks and gave me three hours of enjoyment so I'd say it's very good. Just don't go in expecting anything and it will reward you richly.
very easy to jump-in and play but be ready for a steep climb if you're looking to survive
Very fun game with big variety of upgrades and items. Every new game feels like nice gambling. For it's money this game is definitely recommended.
Playable, but not incredible
I dunno, maybe the title it a bit too harsh. Anyway, Pixel star, decent game! There is only so much to be said about this game since it's basically the same thing every time - survive and fight "bosses". As for someone who likes bullet-hell games and flashy colours, this is a good one!
In Pixel Star you're basically a space-ship that flies around space trying to kill enemy space-ships and get points, there are chances for a perk to fall of an enemy ship or anything that you destroy really that may upgrade your ship, every so often you'll face a boss and if you happen to defeat it you'll encounter harder enemies.
Gameplay is nice alright, you do need a good strong pc to run this game on high settings but on low it basically looks the same and really smooth so it's no problem. Music's kinda weird i'd admit, it took me a few mins for it to dig inside my brain and it was kind of annoying? Maybe someone would like that, not my taste though.
I mean, it's a simple game, and it's nice. That's all there is to it really. If you wish to spend your time somehow, this is a good recommendation, it is fun to some extent yet annoying when you lose (obviously). The price is alright, i would say it's worth to buy this game, it's not too expensive, fun, pleasing to the eye (oh boy) and there are no "bad things" about it, i couldn't find any cons.
I like it for what it is, a twin stick space shooter, but sometimes it's really hard to tell where damage is coming from, many enemy effects tend to be very muted and when you have your screen shaking and explosions everywhere you really need to be able to discern enemy projectiles near instantly. Your own bullets are bulky colored lines, but enemy bullets are tiny red dots ( ex: https://i.imgur.com/1MEPLPt.jpg ). This is really my only complaint, but it's a big one. ( occasionally things fly in from offscreen at high velocity but I'll just chalk that up to space realism ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) )
Other than that, the regenerating base shield is a nice concept, you can survive one hit every so many seconds which helps reduce the frustration caused by my main complaint, you have a health bar that only takes damage when you have no shield, there's a nice variety of weapon and support choices, and the absence of a plot means it's all gameplay. You beat a few bosses then go into endless mode and play until you die, some of your abilities scale infinitely and it can be very intense!
Fun for a few hours, and at the price point I think that's pretty good.
A very nice little time killer. I find it rather difficult on normal, but I ain't good. Has different difficulty settings so no worries. Buy if you like space, lasers and blowing stuff up.
before first boss: just a few enemies no big deal. after first boss: sh*t hits the fan everything and everyone wants you dead so shoot everything that moves and dont stop moving.
its a great game. tight controls. great bosses and enemies. just buy it and if you dont like it big deal it was $3 who cares.
+:
= It's BOTH easy AND complicated: easy to get, easy to play, hard to master, impossible to survive for longer than 4-5 minutes;
= You always will get something to see, shoot at or to run for/from;
= A bAtt ton of pickups, upgrades and functions to grab;
= An ENDLESS Universe to stalk (before NMS went popular) with different conditions (Nebula Storm, High Collision Zone, ets...);
-:
=EPILEPSY WARNING!!! And I am serious!!! This game it TOO colourful and active it can make you throw off;
= ... Overpowered Bosses?
This game is a good way to have some rest after loooooooooooooong day at work/university/school/kindergarden/whatever the heck you were, or to warm up before that very important Nooby-Rektage. Be careful though, 'cause it WILL give you a headache after 6th hour (yep, time's running fast there). 420/360 for Game of Drones.
And Valve, quit screwin' around with Dat Dota of yours and add some new TF2 weapons plz!!! PLZ!!!
It's a lot of fun to play! Though the menus are extremely basic and a bit ugly, the game is very enjoyable and the different power-ups / abilities to choose from, a system similar to Clustertruck, make for an interesting experience on different levels.
It runs very fluent and I didn't encounter any lag spikes and, as expected with a game of such simplicity, no bugs either (at least I didn't find any).
There is way more to do than in Asteroids and it's more rogue-like than that experience but keeps the basic premise. I would say that if you are looking for a bit of a modernized Asteroids experience, which I suspect most people here are, then this should be more than sufficient.
I would recommend it, though a little more work on the main menu could attract a lot more customers but that's not my biz so whatever.
Pixel Star is an exciting take on classic arcade games with cool features like customizable ship layouts and adjustable difficulty levels. Definitely a must have for anyone who likes duel stick shooters
Pretty simple and limited game. Does provide some variaty though with hazards, preselecting a usabke utility skill and ammo-dependant secondary fire.
Just one mode: Survive as long as you can with increasing difficulty, new enemies and bosses.
I didn’t like the over-pixelated graphics style.
It’s fine for what it is, but has limited content, adding variety and depth to the single game mode. As long as you are aware of that, go ahead.
game depends on the power-ups you get. if you get the right upgrades you can be overpowered and play for hours. if you don't, you can try as hard as you want, you'll not succeed.
so if you get the propper upgrades, you're good, if not the game can be a pain in the a...
but after all, this game is a good enhancement of a classic arcade game and if you practise enough, may you'll reach the highscore. :)
just updating my review for the Steam Award :)
It would probably be redundant to say that this is like Asteroids "endurance mode" (since that's basically what Asteroids already is) but Pixel Star certainly feels like a more fleshed-out "how long can you survive?" Asteroids game. And there's nothing bad about that.
You start by configuring your ship in three areas: The hull slot (i.e. your ship's passive quality), "utility" slot (which is a deployable non-offensive ability like teleporting or slowing time), and the "secondary" slot (which is one of six consumable super weapons).
When the game begins, you're presented with an environment that anybody who has ever played Asteroids will be familiar with. You're immediately able to fly off in any direction--asteroids and enemies will spawn around you, which you can shoot for points and items--and there's no real "destination". In addition to asteroids and enemies, space is randomly populated with other cosmic objects like black holes, anomalies, higher-density asteroid fields, and nebula clouds. Whether it's instantly killing you, bringing down your shields, or simply making life harder for you, each of these phenomoena has a tangible impact on the gameplay.
There are also random "events" that can appear--a stranded civilian needs rescuing, a bounty needs collecting, a piece of lost cargo awaits discovery--that are another way to provide item bonuses to your ship. The main conceit is that shooting the subjects of these events destroys them; they're the one thing in space that you don't want to vaporize, so look out.
Periodically a boss will spawn, locking you down to a screen-sized area until one of you is dead. For the most part, these bosses seem well-designed--none of them are especially easy or tough, and they all play differently enough that you can get a real sense of "personality" in each one. And each time you kill a boss, the universe gets a little more pissed off at you.
My only gripes are that the icons for items and power-ups aren't really readable. This isn't a big deal since you're going to be hoovering up everything you come across, but it would be nice to more easily identify WHAT something does before I race across the screen to grab it. Similarly, while I understand that Pixel Star is emulating the simple vector-style graphics of games like Asteroids, I still wish there was a greater variety in appearance of enemies. As it currently stands, most enemies are some variation of vaguely-triangular spaceship, and distinguishing between them isn't the easiest thing to do--especially as things grow chaotic.
Beyond that, Pixel Star is just a humble question of "how long will you last?" You'll fight a growing number of increasingly dangerous enemies, collecting items and power-ups and fighting bosses until you inevitably perish. That is to say. if you're looking for some greater purpose or motivation for blasting asteroids and space monsters, this game's probably going to let you down. Otherwise, it's a solid distraction--especially when you can get it for about the price of a soda.
What can I say? This is one of the most addicting, challenging, awe-inspiring arcade games I have ever played. And I wouldn't have it any other way.
Mono (dev) has hit the nail on the head with this one. The perfect combination of fluid, snappy motion and consistant projectiles makes controlling the pixelated 2D spaceship an absolute dream. Along with it's easy to use menu system, with simple but balanced ship customisation, it creates the type of game that is so easy to just start up, and get stuck into. Not only that but the modern arcade style visuals with dynamic feeling backgrounds and enemies makes it a very good sight for sore eyes.
The feeling you get when you just beat your personal best, or absolutely dominate it by managing a score in the millions is nothing but pure acomplishment and satisfaction. At the time of writing this review I just managed to pull off a 13.7 million score run on Normal mode (just over 50 minutes of constant fast-paced action).
Despite my short few hours of play time, I can already say this is an extremely well executed game and would highly recommend it to anyone who finds themselves wanting a fast-paced, exciting and beautiful game, that will surely last them a lifetime. As there is always a chance of beating that highscore one more time...
ever feel the need of destroying things, this is a good game to do that in, but with challenge! it has a nice arcade feel and almost the classic astroids feel if anyone remembers that game! only this game is far better. start out with your little drones is something i would recommend if you are looking to stay alive. they have helped me countless times! also having so many out is just plain ridiculously amazing. this a real good game.
it has really good graphics, good game play, great re-play-abillity, and is oly 3 dollars! deffinetly recommend! at the time of wrighting, this only has one down vote, what more proof do ya need?
Pixel Star is a little gem of a game, it looks brilliant and runs smoothly (in my experience I haven't had any bugs or glitches); the gameplay is top notch and very fun and enjoyable. A lot of replayability for a time, although the game woulnd't suffer with some different features such as having to unlock ship addons and having an offical leaderboard (currently there is only a thread on the Community Hub). If you enjoy flying around the universe blowing stuff up and fighting untold enemies then this game is for you.
A lot of randomized events and enemies keep this game interesting and feeling different each play through
Great game to play while listening to Spotify!
No leaderboard is the only disappointment
Price Recommended: $3
Really nice game... sorta a mix of Sinistar and Asteroids with a lot of variety. Definitely recommend.
There are games with multi-bajillion dollar budgets, and there are games like this. Made with love and brains; I was quickly blown away while simultaneously addicted with clever gameplay mechanics that kept me itching for 'Just one more run'.
A solid classic kick-arse shooter with the price point of less than a coffee. Why are you still reading reviews? Get it! Love it! (Attempt to) Beat it!
Bonus: I asked the Developer about a possible bug with lag/movement speed...
Me: the red swirl is supposed to halve your movement speed?
Dev: red swirl in the shield boss fight?
Me: yup
Dev: oh, there is one thing that will slow you down that's intentional - little jammer guys that darken the screen with speckles etc. disables your shields and reduces movement by 60%, those guys creep around in that boss
Me: yup just died... and yeah it's that sparcle stuff that laggs ya
Dev: I've been waiting for this opportunity
Dev: "working as intended"
Dev: :D
Me: muhahahaha
I got pwned. Laughed my arse off. Top notch guy.
