Used to play this game as a kid, and I don't know how I beat it back then.
Some of the puzzles are just stupid, and the dialogue goes on and on about irrelevant and boring things. 5 times a puzzle is solved by insisting on the same f-ing dialogue option.
Also it stutters and slows down on animations and dialogues for some reason, and speaking of those animations... Jesus is this game ugly, much uglier than I remember it, but at least it's good fun to laugh at most of the expressions the characters make.
Also some of the jokes really have not aged well.
All in all, I cannot recommend this game to anyone, but I've played it multiple times and torture friends making them play it ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I'm Alaksandu and this is 'Gilbert Goodmate and the Mushroom of Phungoria'!
Some history first.
So this must be back in circa 1999 and in those days we use to buy/read game magazines and with those magazines we use to get a free cd-rom that contained demos, patches and trailers. And on one of those cd-roms it was a trailer of this particular game. And I thought that game looked awesome and I really wanted to get it. But I could never find it. So time went on and life continued and such. Although I quickly forgot the name of the game but I did kinda somewhat remember the trailer through the years.
Fast-forward 20-so years and I'm watching a video from the youtuber 'Ahoy' and in that video he was talking about Point-and-Click Adventure games through history. It is long video but really worth to watch. And in it he just in a few seconds talks about this Swedish game and I knew immediately it was this game that I hadn't seen for 23 years and somewhat forgot. And to my joy the game could be bought on Steam™ 😊
So I start playing it and now I'm bewildered again because I'm pretty sure I recognize the voice for the main protagonist. I just knew I've heard it before! But I couldn't figure it out. Until it hit me... It's Indy Neidell!! From the awesome history youtube channels 'World War Two', 'TimeGhost History' and the former host of 'The Great War' channel so I guess youtube is the hero here hahaha 😄
Anyway so how is the game you ask? It's all right. It's a love letter to Lucas Arts Point-and-Click games. It's fun and lighthearted. The puzzels are (for the most of time) doable but a few time it's pixel hunting and a slide puzzel that can go straight to hell.
I'd say if you like classic 90's Point-and-Click Adventure games then go for it 🙂
And if you do get the game and you install it then go to into the game files and right click on the executable and change the compatibility to Win 95 or Win 98. Then you'll be able to run the game from Steam™. Oh and press F1 when you start the game if you don't want to see the Intro cinematics everytime you boot the game 😅
This game is a wonderful part of my childhood. I love it so much. The music, the story, the bran teasers and the humor. It is dated for sure but man I love it
Gilbert Goodmate is a blast of a point and click adventure game with great hand-drawn animation and sprites.
The outstanding artstyle, fantastic world, brilliant story, clever writting, amazing voice acting, top notch humor and great puzzles that surpringly are not as confusing as you would expect.
To play you use a mouse and both its left and right buttons, escape button to skip dialogue (hold for super skip) and F1 to open main menu (very weird choice but old game is old I guess).
You cannot really skip a 2 minute long in game cutscene (except for speeding up dialogue by holding space bar) that happen on every single game launch BUT you can press F1 right before that cutscene will play (during game logo's) to go straight into main menu and load your save file.
The weird thing is that the game didn't go on sale for like couple of years already. Anyway
this game is so good that it's definitely worth the current full price tag (6,59 euro).
SIDE NOTE: if the game doesn't start (especially on Windows 10) go to game's folder and find Gilbert.exe file. Right-click on it and select Properties. Select the Compatibility tab and then Windows 95.
Now you can launch the game through Steam. Have fun!
I might be nostalgia-biased. The puzzles in this game are sometimes mind-boggling and finding out what you need to do to progress could drive you insane if you don't read a walkthrough. Some of the stuff in this game made me go "Come on man...", but what this game lacks in puzzle engineering they make up for in charm. The characters are all very good and funny to talk too and the voice actors do one hell of a job. Although you might get tired of hearing Gilbert go "IiIiIiIi DoN't ThInK sO..." or "I DoN't ThInK ThAt WoUlD aCcOmPlIsH aNyThInG", he is a really great protagonist. It's a wholesome game with charming humor that pulls you in. And although I criticized the puzzles and objectives, as long as you have a walkthrough in hand to look at when you get stuck, the game really is quite enjoyable. The looks might be outdated and I'm not sure if it's the best in it's genre but I don't think it's a bad game at all, and I would recommend it.
I think the vast majority of people who buy this game do this for nostalgia, and I can understand that, as I got a demo of this game on a CD (which I still own!) that came with a magazine back in late 2001. Now, almost 20 years later, I can enjoy the full version of Gilbert Goodmate and The Mushroom of Phungoria. I was utterly surprised to see this game on Steam and the fact that it runs on win 10 like a charm is splendid. This game does deliver some good humour which I would not understand as a kid. Yeah, this was my first complete run and sometimes I had to resort to a walkthough for the sake of seeing through the game. What else can I say? I got what I wanted and I am happy.

I used to play this game on my Pocket PC all the time! Glad to finally have it on Steam.
Everyone who has played this game loves it! The graphics are dated, but the cartoon styling has aged well. The storyline is silly, but fun, and the voice acting is really quite charming.
You should definitely give it a try, especially considering it's definitely one of the best adventure games available for less than $10!
One of my favourite games from childhood. It used to always crash somewhere on the second CD, so I never saw the ending, maybe now I will =)
GG is a great classic adventure game. It has everything that a decent quest has to have : marvelous hand-drawn graphics, great music, outstanding voice acting, and lots and lots of funny light-hearted dialogue. The difficulty is just right - there are no mind-blowing and brain-cracking puzzles, like in old Sierra games, but to beat the game you have to do some innovative thinking and some healthy pixelhunting.
I had played the game back in 2001, have a lot of fun with it now and will hopefully play it again in 2030.
Reminds me of my childhood. Great advanture game! I recomend playing this game if you are a fan of point and click advanture games. LOTS OF FUN :P :D
I bought the boxed version of this game on a whim when it came out, I can't remember why because I wasn't much of a gamer then and had seen no reviews etc. I really enjoyed it but it was subsequently lost so I was happy to see it appear here on Steam all those years later. It's something I would recommend to fans of classic point n' click adventure games. It's like a cheaper, less funny version of Curse Of Monkey Island, similar cartoony style and dialogue/inventory-based puzzles.
PROS:
- lots of inventory items to collect
- lots of characters with fun dialogue
- lots of areas to explore
- many clever and mostly fair puzzles
- wide range of good voice acting
- it is LOOOONG
CONS:
- probably too much dialogue overall, even if it is often amusing
- voice acting probably a bit too diverse (North American, Scottish, English, Middle-Eastern, Spanish, etc. makes things a bit too bizarre at times)
- also, the main character's voice acting can be very annoying (at least if you're British, like me!)
- bit of a stupid plot
- some puzzles are not intuitive at all
But overall, it's a game I don't think that many adventure-game fans are familiar with, it's always fun to play a little-known game, and it's definitely worth a play if you're a fan of this genre, at least to say you have. Almost certainly you should snap it up in a sale if the chance arises!
