About the Game
Magi is a game of wizard duels, mixing strategy and RPG elements with the dynamism and immediacy of fighting games.Create a character and pit him or her in a series of duels against other wizards. Each battle grants you more spells and power, letting you expand your strategy. But time goes by and no mage is immortal. Sooner or later, your character will have to face the final challenge — the battle with the death itself.
Why it’s cool:
- A tough challenge that makes you work for victory.
- Multitude of spells and characters to experiment with.
- Each spell and ability has its unique tactical purpose.
- It’s pure nerdy fun, with builds, strategies, and what not.

A couple days ago I suddenly thought about this game again. I used to play this way back, maybe as long as 15 years ago. When I finally found the game, I immediately bought it. Even the main menu was massively nostalgic, with the great music.
All in all, i'm biased AF, but this is some seriously good stuff.
I swear I played this game somewhere before. Maybe it was free online at some point. Anyway, it's pretty sweet and simple. The strategy is interesting enough. I wish there were shortcut keys. It's decently fun.
This is an old and fun game that used to be sold by the standalone developer. It's a shame strategies are not still posted, for it can really be challenging to win. Music soundtrack is pretty iconic... I don't think the developer supports it anymore but if you're into magic duels then you've probably spent worse money than this.
Build a wizard! Engage in duels! This game is a fun take on magical combat, and allows for a hilarious amount of build variety. A sadly-underrated and undervalued game. Give it a look!
As a longtime fan being able to play this masterpiece; it's so amazing. I use to play it so much as a kid, I spent hours playing through all the different levels. It is the ultimate time killer. For a game made around such a simple concept, it's somehow really complex; the skill trees are pretty detailed as are the characters you can play.
Overall I would recommend this game to anyone who wants to kill an hour or two and enjoy it.
Hard game but quite a fun one. Play as one of many dueling wizards. Love how each one is a little bit unique. Easy to Learn.
Played this one before Steam. Have put many hours into it.
This game isn't bad... per say. It's hard to figure out what the balance it's going for is. The mechanics aren't bad, just kinda simple. This is both good and bad in terms of gameplay, as it's easy to understand, but also somewhat limiting in terms of what you can do in a given situation. If things go well, they get kinda boring. If things go poorly, there seems to be no coming back.
I wish there were a 'meh' hand instead of up or down.
I played this game in 2007. I was in love with it. Because it was a demo version, I was never able to higher than level 5 or so.
Now I found it on steam (it was very hard to find on internet) and without considering, I grabbed it. I love the nostalgia feeling.
Very unique tactical mage dueling game!
If you try it, be sure to start with 15 INT and focus on BLUE as primary!
It seems the computer opponent is overpowered unless the game is played a certain "correct" way. Which after 5 matches I'm pretty sure isn't to concentrate on putting up shields first. I'd want to put up a shield first if I was a Magus with a long flammable beard - wouldn't you?
Can be a very challenging game. Earning even one of the few achievements will be demanding on your arcade skills. Mage battling mage, variety of spell casters with strengths and weaknesses, special abilities unique to each caster -- all good. Spells organized into four categories; choose your poison. Learn what the stats mean as you level up and choose what to raise and which new spell to learn. Develop a winning battle plan that may not work on every opponent. With all the spellcaster types, special abilities, stats and spells, you can easily sink hours into making different combinations that may or may not work. Game is fast-paced and experimentation is essential. Graphics are simple, but the explosions are colorful and in every battle you are treated to a light show. Main problem is that there is no standard save system, which means that if you fail a tough battle, you cannot repeat it. The game simply moves on to the next opponent, which sucks if you want a second or third chance at defeating the final opponent, DEATH INCARNATE, and earning a tough achievement. Might be worth it to some at $9.99. A steal if on sale. If you always wanted to be a spellcaster and battle other spellcasters, you should get this game.
Well, I don't have a lot of time with this game yet, but it is such a great concept i had to post something now while it's on sale. There's not a whole lot to the game, but it's polished and fun to play! It's very well thought out and balanced. It's a lot like the movie "The Raven", with Boris Karloff and Vincent Price! It's basically one-on-one, head-to-head magic user battles!
I recommend this game to anyone that likes magic and fierce battles like in the movie; "The Raven".
My main reason for this prematue review is to let OS X user's know this games works great on my MacBook Pro. I will update this once I play more.
PROS:
+10 different magic user's to level up and build to your liking.
+Nice character customization with skill trees for each one.
+Each character is different and has their own special skills.
+Many different spells to use and stack to make them stronger.
+Different types of spells including damage based, protection, summoning, etc.
+The whole UI fits on one page during battles. No needs to change screens during battle.
+Great descriptions of everything! You can right-click on anything to get a detailed description of what it is and what it does.
+Indepth tutorial! A little confusing at times, but it corrects you too! Oh boy does it correct you! lol
+The ability to queue up spells for strategic attacks and defense. You can also remove spells from your queue to change strategy on the fly.
+Simple but very strategic gameplay.
CONS:
-You cannot name your character.
-The tutorial was a bit confusing, but that was probably my fault. I'm getting old.
-The game had one bug so far. After completing the first tutorial battle, I went to the main menu and viewed my Grimoire, which is basically your progress screen. My "Wins" score was incorrect.
-There is an age limit (I think 50 years) where you must fight the final boss. I guess the game ends then. Not sure. Each battle is a year. So 50 battles it's bad I guess. There are 10 characters to build up, so it has replayability.
-Not much of a story, but this games doesn't really require one! Just battle it out! :-)
The game runs smooth as silk on my MacBooK Pro:

It's "TUG-OF-WAR" with fireballs and techno-liches.
Other games come to mind, like
"Aeon Command" (space battles)
"Samurai vs Zombies Defense" (goofy samurai warfare)
and
"Puzzle Chronicles" (the illegitimate child of Tetris and Mortal Kombat)
These game elements are constant:
- try to hold the line
- manage your defences
- beef-up your attacks
- spam your enemies to death
In Magi, you start by opening magical "channels." These channels enable your spells and strengthen them. Then, it's a real-time battle as you queue-up spells for casting. It's like the building queue in Starcraft or Civ... only it's your shield spell, or a magic missile, or summoning an imp. As your mage is casting one spell, you have time to set up the next. And the next. You can plan a bit... or panic. Apparently, I'm still fond of panicking.
These are the fundamentals. Crank up your juice, then blast away. It's incredibly linear, but because these are Magi it gets complicated/interesting...
- - I'm actually trying to write a decent review, here, because this game deserves one.
This game is strategic at heart. It's simple, but executed with nuances and depth. This fits the theme. Your own cleverness and guile might even help with the immersion... it's a bunch of brainiac wizards, afterall.
After each battle, your character gains experience and can be developed as you choose. You can increase one of your five attributes, and pick a new spell from an evolving list.
There are different characters to choose from, with different strengths and unique "special abilities." You can tweak their attributes before playing, also.
The graphics are sorta minimal and retro, but quite classy. There's occult-looking crap here and there... I'm not sure how the ratings system handles that. This isn't walla-walla-bing-bang; it really is Doctor Faustus.
Everything can be played with the mouse. Icons and commands are accessible, and the UI is good. Right-clicking gives explanations for EVERYTHING.
Okay. I confess to liking 1) tower defense games, 2) RPGs, and 3) strategy games with a good user interface.
1) This is a grindy power-struggle in each battle, and each win is dearly earned. Each victory is worth AT LEAST one cookie or a couple nachos.
2) There's a rich variety in characters, with an old school feel. Compare character graphics with "Risk Of Rain" and maybe "The Immortal" from the [classic] NES system... the character models are proportionally accurate. This is not cartoonish.
3) It's such a simple idea, but expands to pretty involved gameplay.
Old-school RPG, solid time-critical combat, and much replay value in a dark thematic setting.
I played D&D back in the early 1990s. This game is like distilled moonshine of whatever wizards could be. It's mage duels, done well.
