Basic side scroller with minimal/basic variation in gameplay.
Game was glitchy with my mouse, and with no ability to modify the controls the game is unplayable, with the ship jumping randomly around when i move the mouse slightly.
Cannot recommend this game
"in Space" is a very simple retro space shooting game.
The graphics are extremely basic (even more basic than Space Invaders).
You fly a spaceship, trying to shoot all of the enemy spaceships and asteroids which are approaching from the right side of the screen.
It's not a particularly thrilling game; I'm guessing that it's probably aimed at those who want a bit of nostalgia in their computer gaming.
However, I do like the difficulty settings. Players can choose Normal, Hard, Very Hard, or Bonkers (that's a nice little touch of humour in the last-named setting).
There's not many reasons to recommend this game. A yearning to play retro games is about the only reason I can think of for people wanting to play it - if so, then good luck to them, and I hope they enjoy it.
However, despite the retro reason for its existence, I can't recommend this game in good conscience.
I didn't particularly enjoy it, and I'm guessing that most other people wouldn't either.
A simple fun game, it can get addicting. Has some pretty awesome music too. It's funny when you use discord (If use that instead of skype's crappy call quality) becuase it says you're "Playing in space."
A fun distraction at best. You wont get more than a few hours out of it. The one dollar price tag makes it very easy to reccommend. You know, it's one of those games you will get when you have a little extra cash in the steam wallet but you don't have enough for games you actually wanted.
Hey everyone and this is my review about the game!
This is a casual click? game.
Interface/Menu/Settings
You have options at the "Launch section"
There is a music slidebar with % available.
There is a sound slidebar with % available.
Almost has any resolution size available.
You can play fullscreen or windowed mode.
There is a difficulty settings available. Normal to very hard.
About the game.
You are playing with a spaceship shooting thing. Your spaceship has a straigth line laser-sight which will make it a bit easier to hit those things. Matching colors of the same thing will push your own line back. Your line will go forward if you hare having too much mis-matches. Whenever that happends or the things are touching your line. The game is over. At the bottom of the game you will see "Round". Whenever this is empty you will complete and move on to the next round.
Game is boring and repetitive.
There is somewhat a boss enemy type.
There is Techno/trance music during the game.
You are able to pause the game during game.
Other things.
You can place your own highscore and name. But this is only for local and not online purposes.
Game music and sound doesn't really seem to work if i press Pause(esc button). It seems that the volume resets itself back again. Even if it shows it is on 10%.
If you are going to Alt-Tab out of the game, You can't use your mouse cursor or move it. Which is really bad. Playing windows mode doesn't have this issue. Because you are able to click outside of the game.

I Give this game a 2/10
I got a coupon for this game, and was intrigued after watching the trailer. Looking at the negative reviews, I expected the game to have choppy functions and lack of content. Although I haven't experienced any buggy gameplay mechanics (running Windows 7 x64), one of my friends has (running Windows 8.1 x64). As such, if you're using Windows 8 or 8.1, I would advise caution with this game, as it may not function properly.
The amount of content is what you'd expect after watching the trailer; you just shoot the enemies before they get to the line. The game is controlled entirely with the mouse and mouse buttons; moving the mouse moves your spaceship up or down like you'd move the mouse cursor, and left click fires a shot. As such, this game can be played entirely with one hand.
As far as I can tell, there are 2 gameplay modes; "Match 3" and "Survival". In survival mode, you have to kill the enemies before they reach the border line on the left. However, each kill makes the border move a little bit to the right, requiring you to kill enemies faster. Killing enemies in rapid succession moves the border to the left. In Match 3 mode, each kill moves the border to the right, but killing 3 of the same enemy color in a row will move the border a bit to the left, which I find to be a unique idea. In either mode, however, accuracy is a must; as the trailer said, this is an accuracy-based shooter. There are also several difficulty levels, although I've only played on normal difficulty so far.
When starting the game, you're greeted with a settings screen where you can choose the screen resolution, whether or not to play in full screen, whether to display special effects, and adjust the volume controls. However, after this screen, there is no way to change these settings except for the volume. Fortunately, it's very easy to exit and restart the game to change the settings if need be.
A very simple game at its core, and definitely worth the $0.66 I paid for it.
This game might be fun, but it really lacks explanations or tooltips on what the goal is, Help menu is pitiful. None of the different modes are explained excpt the base difference between survival and match 3, and it wouldn't be so bad if you could extract it from context, but they all look the same and appear to behave the same.
For 99 cents it might be worth it, although the lack of good fullscreen support and controller support does bring it down for me.
I can't bring myself to recommend it (I know it's only 1 dollar but still, a lot of free games are better)
Its a okay game however can get boring pretty quickly. recommended to anyone that likes simple space shooters
So I look in the little in-game store (for upgrades not microtransactions you pay real money for) and the in-game money is called like squids or something, and i'm like what the fuck. 10/10 Its made by the wierdos in like britain or one of those other stupid countries.
There are two main modes of play, each of which can be modified with two optional rules. Between this and four difficulty levels you'll probably find something to your liking. The game is based on an interesting idea, but gets boring suprisingly quickly. The one-page manual is not good enough and some things are quite hard to deduce, which is not acceptable for a game vying for my time. So is it worth a dolla? Meh... I guess. Just barely.
Pretty decent game for random time killing where you only have a laptop and one hand. Definitely worth the buck but don't expect a very large amount of content, just a good amount of replayability
This game is garbage, the controls are juddery and the game just does not respond to my mouse. i try to ignore this and play the game and i see my space ship teleporting around when i am just moving my mouse a tiny bit. DO NOT buy this game, it is a waste of money
It looks like a good idea, but I just cannot get the game running!
I tried different resoltuions: in full screen mode, the mouse just doesn't work and the screen is offset. In windowed mode, it is very slow and laggy. I play much higher end games at 60fps without issues on my machine.
Would love to play if the game worked!
This game exemplifies the difference between a "retro game" and a "retro-aesthetic game".
- Could the gameplay mechanics be implemented on a previous generation's hardware?
[*]If you did, would it still be fun?
In other words, just enough mutually-interacting mechanical rules to make the game a rewarding challenge to master. (See also: "Bushnell's Law".)
Everything else is just chunky-pixel chiptune window dressing fluff.
Not that I'm claiming that modern audio-visuals and retro gameplay are mutually exclusive. They're just mutually independent.
In the case of "in Space", the answers would be "Atari 2600, or maybe an oscilloscope and some TTL chips" and "Yes".
Definitely worth your four quarters.
Well, I got a coupon for this game and bought it. But actually, this is a very addicting game and more with the match three mode. The purpose of this arcade game is to shoot the incoming objects know as gememys. Each time you shot, a barrair thar protects keeps goin forward if its set to survival mode. If the genemy hits your barrier, game over. Sounds easy right? NOPE, unless you are really an expert on predecting movements and on what gememy to shoot since it keeeps goin forward.
The match three mode throws that to the window and makes it slightly better, as the name says, it consits of shooting 3 gememys of the same color to avoid the barrier to keep goin forward. The thing with this mode is that it keeps the air flowing since sometimes you might have 2 of the same color, lets say blue and the incoming ones are only reds and greens. So you need to sacrifice 3 shoots just so you need to continue and prevent dying.
I might make it sound as a boring game, but trust me when you actually play the game. Its so much fun and very addictive.
By far one of the best games I have played on a computer.
in Space is an addictive, surprisingly enjoyable space shooter with enjoyably simplistic mechanics. As a ship with what basically amounts to a peashooter strapped to it, you fire at coloured shapes to stop them from reaching past your defences. However with each shot your defensive line edges forward, making the game harder and harder. This is where the aformentioned simplistic mechanics come in. In one mode of the game you need to destroy three or more of the same coloured shape to get your defensive line to move back. In another, you have to time your shots and destroy ships in rapid succession to get it to recede.
This mechanic is really cool and nifty and makes the game fun to play. It requires pinpoint accuracy and you only really have yourself to blame if you break your combo.
Throw in some cool Atari Esque visuals and a decent soundtrack and you've got a game that is more than worth the 79p it's sold for.
It's a fun space shooter with surprisingly intense and unique gameplay and some of the best music around. It's only $0.99, there's no reason not to buy it.
I am totally frustratingly happy with this game. It is fun, challenging, it tests your reactions skills masterfully. It brought me back to my childhood in the 80's. IT's like KABOOM by Activision mixed with DEFENDER by Williams.Oh and btw the Soundtrack on this is FRICKEN INCREDIBLE! Thank you to the programmers of this game. Great job
This is a fun little space shooter that focuses more on strategy and puzzle mechanics as opposed to mindless clicking with the mouse. The Atari-esque graphics and sound effects are a nice touch, and the electronic background music is quite soothing and complements the gameplay. If you can get a good deal on this -- which you can; the game normally sells for $0.99 and it's possible to get coupons that knock it down further -- then I recommend giving this a try. It's good for those moments where you might want to play something but don't want to devote a large block of time.
in Space is a fragmented yet enjoyable basic experience, the true definition of an indie game. First things first, it has an amazing soundtrack, and the visuals are retro. The gameplay is its main focus, and they humorously tote that due to budget everything else was cut, and what it does it does well. NOW what it doesn't do is tell you what this game actually is....
Its a 2D scrolling shooter with MATCH 3 mechanics. Not anywhere was that apparent on the store, and it took me one attempt to figure out the game mechanics, so its easily accessible yet moderately challenging once you get going. For my bottom line.....
"So ya, I'd buy that for a dolar"
List of things you can buy with a dollar:
This game.
Homeless person's adoration.
Some crappy noodles.....(but they taste so good)
100 pennies if your government still mints them (or some other subpar coinage)
Really cheap prostitutes (ok well this one you end up paying more in other ways... :( )
Cheap in game cosmetics
Some other crappy indie games on steam which won't give you near as much fun as this.....
....oh and it has trading cards...
