Simple concept, near perfect execution. Incredible game for what it costs.
Cool game
This game is not easy
Amazing Game. Worth every bit of 3$ and more.
Simple and elegant. Very challenging, particularly in hard mode. The movement and combat is hard to master, but immensely satisfying. Part of the skill lies in racking up combos- killing enemies without touching the ground. Depending on how many you kill you could be rewarded with gems, charge (bullets) and/or health.
I am still trying to beat hard mode- I have got the boss down to the last few hp, but couldn't quite pull it off.
the movement and acceleration is inconsistent, hit boxes on the side are awful, and it's an endlessly frustrating roguelike with mediocre power-ups. i gave this game a good hour, got to about stage 3, and on a reset was about to slam my keyboard after i died on stage 1 to a fucking bat not realizing i was above its head. not worth the "skill ceiling" or however you justify the mechanics. i think the concept is really cool and there are a lot of good ideas but playing the game is rage bait.
A short game where you go down a well and use your Gunboots to shoot enemies as you continually descend. Simple, right?
The difficulty (and main draw) of this game stems from the amazing combo system which allows you to rack up bonuses the more enemies you kill without touching the ground. With limited ammo this might seem really problematic, but ammo is refilled upon jumping on an enemies head. This leaves the player the choice of either going for a riskier play to jump on an enemy (and risk getting hit by something else) or just burst them down and be on their merry way. I myself have gotten hit because I spent too much time bouncing on enemies that I didn't notice I was getting chased by a skull above me.
Add in the many types of guns and the various gameplay altering upgrades Welltaro can obtain and you have yourself somewhat of an "anti-platformer" where you have to try and AVOID the ground to make the most of your time.
There's also plenty replay value since hard mode gets unlocked when you beat the game for the first time. There's also color palletes and different characters to choose from that alter gameplay in some way.
Overall, would recommend everybody to at least try this wonderful classic, especially since it's only 3 bucks.
good!
Wasn't expecting much, turned out to be really fun. wouldn't have minded a few more levels or maybe an infinite/loop mode
iv played this game for years on my phone. if y'all are interested in a cool mod that adds new areas guns effects enemies etc look up downwell descent mod. easy to install drag and drop.
this is a great game . 9/10
falling down a well is suprisingly difficult
Simple and very fun. Great if you like the fast paced replay value of challenging arcade style games.
Knowing Devolver's history with naming sequels to roguelikes about descending into a dungeon full of monsters with nothing but a firearm to aid you, I would be SHOCKED if we didn't get a game called "Upwell" at some point.
FUCK THE BATS
A fun arcade game that you can pick up for a short periods of time. Full runs can be completed in 15-20 minutes. Lots of color palettes to unlock (even though some are vomit-inducing or will sear your retinas), and there are play styles to unlock that change up certain things like the amount of HP you start with, available upgrades, how often stores show up, etc. Also there are several cool boots(guns) you can encounter that can alter how you approach a run. My only complaint is that this game seems to not support cloud saves between physical devices. So Steam Deck progress and PC progress will be different.
I've McFallen
Quite an addictive little game, rather hard with a high skill ceiling, but very satisfying to play.
Very sleek game design. The controls are disarmingly simple but the game is brutally challenging.
At first, I found myself a little frustrated with Downwell since it's so unforgiving. It's a game that really rewards mastery, so it gets more fun as you get better at it. Going down while hitting sweet combos is very satisfying.
I also appreciate the existence of hard mode, which makes the game somehow even harder, pushing you to master the game even more. The inclusion of unlockable color palettes is also a nice touch, giving you small but neat rewards as you play.
My only complaint would be that I'd like there to be more rewards for combos above 25 since it would give you a reason to keep them going.
Overall, great game, would heartily recommend!
This game is great for only three dollars, it's a vertical down-scroller where you shoot and stomp enemies, and as you go progress further down the environment as well as said enemies become more difficult with more game mechanics to watch out for. There are also upgrades and shops as you progress as well.
This game is very unforgiving as there are NO checkpoints throughout the game, but this aspect makes the game feel like an arcade game, which makes you play cautiously. Even having to restart to the beginning isn't repetitive as each level is randomly generated and different play-styles and color palettes can be unlocked so the game never gets stale.
I'll never beat this game but its great.
Downwell has simple gameplay, but is challenging enough to be rewarding. Its lack of depth also means that it probably won't engage you for an extended period of time, but it is entertaining enough in short bursts, played on and off.
Having played this on mobile too, I'd say whichever controls is better is down to preference; personally I appreciate the option to not have my fingers cover the screen.
As far as criticisms go, it could use more rewards above hitting 25 combo, so you aren't incentivized to break the flow upon reaching the number.
Hella satisfying to play
Great little arcade game, very addicting, and also super cheap so there's really no reason not to get it.
gets boring real quick
Fantastic roguelike
I'm so down for well.
This game is a Hidden Gem
The game is really hard... that is, until you unlock hardmode. Then the game is really, really hard.
this game makes me want to fall down a well...and i say that in the best way possible
Highly one of the best games I had ever played in my life. Dead serious. It's simple, hits the right retro vibes and is overall highly time consuming. Th upgrades and how much experience you get is very well balanced. You can change the color themes but i keep it at it's own native default settings. Highly encourage everyone to pick up this game.
Surprisingly fun! It feels great to play. Lots of action, lots of interesting choices.
Not my type of game--I find procedurally-generated levels boring--but this is perfect for fast-twitch 2D platformer lovers.
I recommend it in spite of my own dislike of this type of game.
Downwell is insanely good. I love this art style and the mechanics of the gunboots and falling down the well.
Honestly my only complaint is the lack of a Mac version of the game. The game is on iOS so really there's no reason why there shouldn't be a Mac port as well.
All in all, it's a really fun game to add to your library, especially on Steam Deck.
Look, it's $3 and is a well refined and polished experience. It's perfect at what it's trying to be, which is a fun drop-in game for when you only have a few minutes. At that, it's excellent. There's no downsides.
Don't look at my playtime please. I accidentally left the game running before going on a vacation. I swear.
Fall down, shoot down, go down. The minimalist art style is very pleasing and the moment-to-moment gameplay is satisfying. One of those one-more-try games that is difficult to stop
This is the only game I think I ever bought and own on multiple platforms and consoles (laptops, switch, etc). It's just such a fun game to play when you aren't paying attention and a REALLY great game to play when you are fully into it. The graphics are beautifully retro and charming, and the reply value is amazing. The little easter eggs and pallets you unlock just to keep you coming back are such a nice touch and the randomness of its roguelike design as well as just important little details thrown in make me feel so immersed in this incredibly simply world of a fun player character falling into a well with gun boots to fight enemies. 10/10 one of my favorite games of all time and I never thought I would say that.
A very simple, fast paced and minimalistic roguelike. It's smooth and fun to play. However, the content is very limited, but that's justified for it's price.
it is very engaging
you fall and fall and fall and kill stuff and get more stuff
This game is ridiculously addictive, simple and so good.
Simple in execution, solid too, just unbelievably good.
For the price this is just a steal, I have paid more for worse games, just get it and play it.
simple and fun for less than a dollar (i got it on sale.) what else could you ask for?
I have dozens of hours on the mobile version, but I picked this up on steam today and remembered what a fun gem it is. It's very cheap and can keep you entertained for hours.
I LOVE THIS GAME SO MUCH
I LOVE THE SOUNDTRACK
I LOVE THE GAMEPLAY
I LOVE THE ACHIEVEMENTS
I LOVE EVERYTHING ABOUT IT
I GON' PLAY THIS SHI' FOR SO MANY HOURS BRO
easy to learn, hard to master.
Game is basically free whenever it's on sale just get it bro.
I mean, unless you're not good enough to beat it that is....
Amazing fun straight to point game for having flow
Lost my save after re-downloading the game a year after uninstalling.
Fortunately, you can easily edit your savefile to get back what you previously had if you go through \AppData\Local\Downwell_v1_0_5
this game is like crack
Great little game to dip in and out of
