WHAT in the WORLD is going on here, WHY did nobody ever tell me about it, and HOW MUCH LONGER can this absolute masterwork of utter insanity stay under the radar?!?!

I want to start this review by saying that the game's ending is capped off with a ROCK MONTAGE OF SELECTED GAME CUTSCENES; WHY is there a rock montage of anything in a Call of Cthulhu game?! BUT AT THE SAME TIME WHY NOT

So like, working my way backwards in "why I absolutely think everyone should play this," I realized near the end of the game that this is a full-blown sequel to Call of Cthulhu: Shadow of the Comet, and I absolutely never knew this despite having known about both games for like 15-20 years before finally getting around to playing them. Playing them in subsequent days, happily, so the shared worldbuilding totally worked to hook me and get me more invested. Continuing to the middle of the game, I suddenly realized this game is like the perfect mashup of, like, Call of Cthulhu generally, Raiders of the Lost Ark, and I dunno, the Terminator maybe. I would say the Thing but that is 100% Lovecraft influenced so it does not count.

They so totally nailed the VIBES of this game despite its much shorter runlength compared to the previous title, and I cannot say enough good about this game never coming close to wearing out its welcome. Every adventure game should leave you both surprised it is over already and duly impressed by what you have just witnessed, one way or another, and yeah they did everything right in this title. Though given some of the things I read in the walkthrough it sounds like there are parts of the game that might be endlessly infuriating for people whose whole life is not gaming, as some degree of fast-twitch reflexes are needed at various times to not get killed before you have the chance to advance the story. But in my Big-Time Gamer experience I had no problem with any of them, I must say.

And the first thing chronologically I noticed that made me love this game was that the 3D graphics are trapped in that amazing era where they are utterly comical no matter how hard they try, which could not possibly be less appropriate for Call of Cthulhu, but somehow that adds to the whole bonkers throw-so-much-in-a-blender-and-drink-whatever-comes-out approach the team took in designing this game. I mean the opening action sees a bunch of little blobby dudes fleeing machine gun fire while music that sounds straight out of Stunt Island plays over the top (where are my STUNT ISLAND fans???). Though I do see in the menu you can switch to MIDI music seemingly if you prefer, and generally I do love the bleepybloopies of MIDI if they are available, but the soundtrack to this game was so utterly ridiculous and sometimes inappropriate (like, again, the game ending outro) that I could not help but roll with it.

ANYWAY YEAH SO BUY THESE TWO GAMES IMMEDIATELY if you have any interest in Call of Cthulhu, adventure games, and HAVING A GREAT TIME

Not as atmospheric and unique as Shadow of the Comet, but interesting in its own way.

Hugely disappointed, I've only just begun but this is ugly. The art is uninspiring, the 3d character models are comical, and the story so far is incredibly luckluster. They suck all the mistery out of it in the first 5 minutes showing you a generic monster, and the writing is really boring. The music is mediocre. Some sound effects are obnoxious such as the opening creature screeches. Puzzles are not bad but are also uninspired.
If Shadow of the Comet was a 10/10, this is 5/10 so far

Being a Lovecraftian through and through, and a 50 year old lover of all game genres, it pains me to not recommend this classic.

Prisoner of Ice is an PAC adventure game developed and released by Infogrames Multimedia for IBM PC compatibles and Macintosh in 1995 in America and Europe. It is based on H. P. Lovecraft's Cthulhu Mythos, particularly At the Mountains of Madness, and is a follow-up to Infogrames' earlier Shadow of the Comet. I made a mistake and started with this one and now I'm a bit afraid.

Still, the reason why I dont recommend this game is that riddled with the worse problems of a PAC ADV, more specifically, pixel sized interactable objects and the worse for me, HUGE metalogic jumps which deters from enjoyable gameplay. Considering what they are find them at the end below if you need.

Coming from a person who has seen everything from zx spectrum to VR, having played and beaten PAC ADVs such as Secret of Monkey Island 1 and 2, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade among others, trust me, the game will make you mad, it is just poorly done, a shame, because there seems to be proper research and voice acting and a genuine attempt to make good, looking 30 years behind. But the game is so riddled with nonsense that you could well use it to make people never pick up a PAC ADV again. And it would be understandable.

I will eventually go back to it, when i finish my backlog of 95 lovecraftian games. This game nowadays is not worth 5 bucks, good thing i bought it for 1. The dosbox functions well with the game though no worries there

My advice is if you want a proper PAC ADV get this one instead:

You are in a sub, your captain just died, no one tells you why and how he died, but you just go fw with it... you use a incantation you just recorded from a delirius person because metagaming in a creature you just seen and have no knowledge about but just banish it. No insanity, no repercussians. You are in a military base full of guards, find a body of a tortured man... no one cares, leave him there, dont report, dont raise alarm. lets just take a tin of rotten food to pass the doctor in the infirmary who NEVER DENIED YOU ENTRY TO SEE A PATIENT BECAUSE YOU NEVER ASKED!! just a few examples of the insane logic or lack thereof
