Now that konami is trying to revive the Silent Hill saga with the remake if SH2, and new releases they should fix this piece of garbabage this port is. i give it a chance and bought it in an offer for like 2€ and still i feel robbed. Use the money to either buy 4 on GOG or SH2Re.
I see lots of complaints about this game, but i play other games(EVIL WITHIM) with the same issues, glitches and bugs, and guess what? They(other games) have an overwhelmingly positive reputation, so my advice is, if you have a real decent and updated system setup, just put a very decent ssd on it, because 80% of these issues(problems) will disappear.
And here is a fix for the black screen:
if you still experience black screen on launch.
Go to
Open vars_pc.cfg file with a text editor.
Change ScreenResHeight=
ScreenResWidth= to the desired resolution.
Notes
Resolutions above 1920x1080 may cause the map and examined inventory items to not display properly.
if a vars_pc.cfg doesnt exist in engine folder create it and add desired screen resolution
OBS: It's the closest decent thing near the "OUTLAST" experience, but with guns. And if this isin't enough 4 u, then i advice you to watch a movie that goes by the name of, "House on Haunted Hill", the 1999 version, and look for a character that goes by the name of,
Dr. Richard Benjamin Vannacutt, and not a RPG game claiming to be a horror game.
great game, it crashes :3
Team Silent should never have stopped making SH games. I have been a fan of Silent Hill for 20 years, but I lost interest after Origins. I never played Homecoming or Downpour as the OG games (1-4) are simply king. I decided to try again, but Homecoming is a broken game to say the least. it does not support controllers, which for a start is scandalous, and trying to use the Steam Input Translation mapping does not work and leaves the combat knife constantly equipped, so I can't interact with the environment and just keep swiping the knife everywhere rather than reading documents or moving over obstacles etc. Also it appears that an equipped weapon cannot be unequipped, so I am immediately uninterested. Do yourself a favour and play the original and best games from the days of yore, and avoid this nonsense.
This port is god awful. Borderline unplayable. It would be nice if Konami would update the game and fix it but I doubt that will ever happen.
Loud Mountain: Welcome Mat is not very good.
Runs extremely poorly on my system, and not due to lack of specs. Combat is unsatisfying, the psychological scares are gone, the story is more fit for a D-list straight to DVD horror film than a Silent Hill game. Also, spoilers [spoiler]: You don't even play an actual war veteran. Your character just LARPS as one. Can you imagine what the OG team silent could have done with a war veteran's PTSD? [spoiler]
Fix probably is capping fps in the pc graphical options such as nvidia panel/graphic setting/program setting/silent hill homing/max fps 30 or 36 ... save... and still don't enjoy this game... but hey, OG experience without crash issue
Played through the game on xbox, was curious if the PC version offered more fixes for the graphics. It did 'kind-of-sort-of,' but an already lame carbon copy of a silent hill game won't be fixed by graphics. I don't know how to sugar coat this; the games bad. I used to describe it as a fan game made by a generic western studio. Now that time's passed, even the things that were good or passable about this game have shrunk. It's just boring and insulting to both the player and to Konami. Easily the worst game in the series. 3/10 for the crashes and how poorly it's aged, it's still a complete experience but man you can be doing literally anything else with your time.
Such a fun and scary game, there's so many twists and turns that make me jump out of my seat. 10/10 would recommend.
Terrible buy It glitches so much and kicks me out before i can save i had to re due so many parts of this game not worth 41 bucks
Please Remake This Game... pretty good story, cool monsters, interesting places to explore... but ruined because this game is broken as heck and riddled with technical issues!!!!
I love this game but once I got to the graveyard it just freezes and crashes the game. I tried using Unlnown projects patch to fix this and it helped a bit but now the screen just freezes on cutscenes and I have to restart from the last save just for it to freeze again. I play on a MSI PC and it’s new with high graphics card, so I don’t understand why this game isn’t working. I can easily play games like COD and Fortnite but not this. Id love for this to be fixed.
What can i say about SH that hasnt already been said before. Great game still worth playing today.
and i thought the xbox 360 is bad for a game like that but this was even worse on pc.
Add more Silent Hill games to steam
Got this game on sale, is worth the sale price not the original price. Controls are very sucky just another thing to get used to and dodge action is not always so helpful ecpically when it lags. But so far i have really enjoyed this game, very atmospheric and jumpscare like.
i love the silent hill series so i was very excited to see this one 40% off!! now i see why this game is broke it doesnt even work half the time the controls just wont work its so annoying having this game on my screen makes me irritated.
N O T O P T I M I Z E D.
I played some of the older games, but this.. this is completely unplayable for me. I played it for 42 minutes , trying to play with settings cuz my character would not even attack when i press it like 10 times, controles changed every time the game crashed. And crashing of this game.. oh my gosh. In that 42 minutes it crashed 8 times.. when i alt-tabed , when i tried to do controls in options, when i died cuz my character just would not attack.. i love silent hill with my whole heart but i probably never saw game this bad optimalized.
CIK
I can't even open my inventory when needing to use an object on a spot in the game. Doesn't tell me what button to press either. Steam says there's no controller support either but in the game there's an option to turn it on?? Tried viewing the settings to see what the button could be but didn't get far. Used all my mouse buttons, tried my keyboard but nothing. At least I can examine?? Cool I guess??
it's funny how the only silent hill games available on steam right now are the best game and the worst game
glitches make near unplayable
so i downloaded this while it was on sell nothing is really bad about it besides the fact im not able to use my combat so i cant even get into the game to enjoy it.
fantastic game when it came out but this port is unplayable, the constant crashes make it nearly impossible to progress unless youre running back to save the game every chance you get and even then it may crash while youre trying to make it to the save points. Its also blue screened my PC a few times now. OH and the game page states that it doesnt support controllers (it does), a console game? a ported console game doesnt support controllers? wtf is that?
As a fan of this game, it's disappointing to see such a broken and poorly optimized port sitting on Steam, asking for $40. On newer systems, it's nearly unplayable, with constant technical issues. The game crashes frequently, often setting you back far too much, I have crashed 2 times at the same point and it would put me back nearly 15 min of game-time and 1 fully unavoidable cutscene.
The story itself is decent, but it's hard to appreciate when you're fighting through bugs and performance problems. Considering the success of the Silent Hill 2 remake, some might be curious about this other title on Steam, its seriously odd that THIS is the only other title on Steam. This port just isn’t worth the frustration and headache. If you're interested, wait for a steep discount—I picked it up for $9. At $40, it's just absurd. Steam needs to reprice older games if their this broken.
The game actually just kind of sucks. I had 0 technical glitches or complains, the game is just meh.
4/10 Only buy if ur a big silent hill fan.
Edit: I played it A LONG TIME AGO, like 2010ish, so any patches that fucked up performance aren't taken into account in my review. If u own it u can just get another copy of an earlier version.
Not going to be one of those ultra negative reviewers.
Look, it's 2008 Silent Hill from the XBOX 360/PS3 era.
Decent game, but the port is definitely sub-par. Save often and you'll be fine. Here's the key things to do, to avoid a bad time.
Do NOT minimize the window, you'll crash when you try to reopen it.
Do NOT use the steam overlay, your cursor will get messed up and you'll have to minimize to fix it, and then crash.
There's a glitch where projectile weapons don't make collision, so test a save file. Shoot into a wall, bullet hole = good to go. No hole = reload the save file.
Above all, when the game freezes. DO NOT MOVE OR PRESS BUTTONS. Just let it load. Towards the end, the freezes take up to 60-90 seconds, but it will come back if you don't hit additional inputs.
I really don't know how this game is allowed to be on Steam given that it is difficult to get from a save point to a save point without it crashing.
I jokingly called the game lobotomy hill when I first started it but now I feel like getting lobotomized is actually the optimal way to get any enjoyment out of this port
hmmm NO
the combat system is horrible
it constantly crashes my pc can definitely handle it which is a real shame because it really is a good game. It'd be nice if they could release some patches.
This PC version is super garbage. had to get a fan made patch to get it to run. also the game isnt very good either. do not recommend at all. to hear all my thoughts check out Games My mom found podcast.
game runs well on my PC, and I have it installed on my Deck, buy it on sale
An absolute trash heap at every moment. This game was one of the most miserable experiences I've ever had the misfortune of playing. I though resident evil 0 was bad. But holy shit compared to this ugly filth, resident evil 0 is amazing. Lets talk about what makes this game so bad.
-Well first off the gameplay is janky, clunky, and aggravating. Why the fuk do I have to click shift from going from running to combat mode. I've played games with jank movement but this game takes the cake. 0/10 gameplay
-Secondly the graphics are something atrocious, certainly an eye straining hell. I get that it came out in 2008. But what else came out that year? Dead space. No excuse for this game to look worse than a fuckin PS1 game!!!!
-Third game freezes up at every save spot and at random occasions. Let's play a game of Is It GOnna CrASH?
-fourth unskippable dialog hell. Say you die. Well now there's a good chance u lost progress up to a certain point and gotta talk to characters. You have to listen to them all over with now way to skip. STFU and let me skipppp ffs...
-Fifth a $40 price tag. I mean I got it on sale for $8 and honestly that much was a rip. This garbage should be free but well.... EVEN FREE I'D NEVER PLAY THIS CRAP!!!
-The only redeeming quality is the atmosphere and story but it is ruined by how aggravated I was playing this trash. Oh a scary monster appeared? I'm not immersed or scared because the combat is so jank that the rage induced is burning my blood pressure so high that I'm gonna have a hard attack in my 30's.
Finally FUUUUUUUUUUU KKKKKKKK this game.
Address the bugs and issues the community is speaking about and fix your fucking game Konami.
combat is absolute garbage. you hit the enemy, monster hits you back, you fall down, you get up, monster hits again and makes you fall down again, you get up and manage to get a window to hit, you miss, because the game is buggy as hell, you try to dodge but it doesnt work, it hits you and you fall down again, rinse repeat. game is very buggy, 30 fps cap, film grain that you cant turn off, fixed save spots and no auto save, long loading times on a modern m.2 ssd? yeah, couldnt bother to finnish it.
A black sheep in the entry of the Western Silent Hill releases. For much of the good the game does, it takes two steps back in other places.
The game itself is rather clunky, which is honestly to be expected of a Silent Hill entry, as the traversal nor combat are ever the main focus. Silent Hill is meant to be digested as a both, horrific yet cultish-ly-whimsical experience. Admittedly, this entry is one of the more gory, more slasher-esq entries, sparing no expense by featuring some of the franchises more gruesome body horror to date. Homecoming has three rather big things going for it, two of those being its creature designs with the previously mentioned 'body horror' Homecoming is ripe with. Arguably, Homecoming has some of the best boss designs IN THE FRANCHISE.
The latter in the same vain of design being the Otherworld. It's choice of reddish/brown/orange tones paired with the heavy, grime-y, rusty industrial foundation, paired with some clever sound design tricks and the like, Homecoming's Otherworld feels much more heavy ambiance-wise, while also looking neglected yet inhabited.
On the topic of sound design, and the final real strong-sturdy bone this game has is in its music. Akira Yamaoka is known for the kind of work he's done, and his style is virtually unmatched, even deified by some, with how it's moved not just this franchise, but franchises Yamaoka has had involvement in with his various musical arrangements. If you want it in short; Homecoming's soundtrack is immaculate. It's some of the best music in the entire franchise, with Mary Elizabeth McGlynn's vocals tying it all together to create music that's never left my mind even after a decade and some change.
What causes Homecoming to be seen as a 'black sheep' to me is its attempts to be seen as a more defined entry, rather than a spin-off, making constant nods and attempts to tie in characters from previous titles into itself, and going further by having an incredibly lackluster story. The twist is delivered like a weightless punch, and too many of the supporting cast seem to not want to take this game seriously, causing some rather stilted, nearly bordering uncanny or strange line deliveries.
Alright, onto the actual port of the game, being what actually holds this game back on PC at least;
It's ABYSMALLY BAD.
I had to patch my copy of the game using a patch from 'unknownproject', which luckily makes the game playable at least, but not fully remedying it of some issues, such as textures being messed up, certain audio like voice acting to play in only one ear, and the occasional crash. This game crashed three times over the course of an almost six hour playthrough patched, I can't imagine how far you'd get un-patched. I also still kept to playing the game in 1200x800, as I feared it may be more crash happy if I pushed the resolution too far.
On the topic of ports, which is where I'll conclude my ramblings, I really hope someday they refurbish this port officially. As of writing this review on October 2nd, 2024, there is now only TWO Silent Hill entries available on Steam, the other being the remake of Silent Hill 2 set to debut days after this review. The only other 'official' entry being on GOG, being Silent Hill 4. I hope that Konami maybe tries to bring forward the ports of other Silent Hill entries, both the Team Silent and Western entries, and works with a studio that can actually get it right.
Otherwise, Silent Hill Homecoming has all kinds of lovely eye-candy and ear-candy, but feels very heavy-handed, and falls very short due to its shortcomings. Play this game on a console, it's backwards compatible via the Xbox One, and that's probably the best way to even experience the game. I dunno how this game would handle being emulated.
good game but horrible port. Play with patches or even better on a ps3/xbox emulator
I played on the PS3 and had a way more better experience than playing here on pc. I had to play the game through the Bin Folder because launching the game through Steam or the desktop. I couldn't really change the default 800x600p resolution. I got to play at 1920x1080p and for the most part works.
But it crashes. Either by reloading a lot if you find yourself stuck on a boss or enemies. Technical issues aside, this is a good Silent Hill entry. But at the same time I did have issues with plot details. The Silent Hill movie was coming out at the same time and some elements from the movie carry over to this game.
I would not recommend the game at 40 bucks especially with all the trickery you need to do to get it working on modern systems. Konami really needs to fix it or remaster etc. So get it on sale. I spent like 8 bucks for it and I got to relive the past playing this game again.
i actually like the game but neither the devs nor konami will fix this port. there are fan patches that help but performance is still bad. Plz fix your game konami. if they fix it i will give a positive review.
dogshit
Game crashes a lot on PC. As the saving system is so few and far between, this requires you to replay bits (sometimes including unskippable cut scenes) again and again. Game is also capped at 30 FPS (no matter what I try) and some of the puzzles don't work properly, requiring endless clicking or repetitive dragging of the mouse until it does what you need it to. Sound for cut scene voices is incredibly quiet. The game in itself is not bad for it's time and has some decent jumpscares and moments, I just wish the performance of the game was better as it ruins the immersion.
This is my refund review and requesting for refund.
""""I'm going to share my experience and I'm going to be here. I know Silent Hill 2 remake is coming out on Sept 7th, which I'm extremely exciting for. I love Silent Hill. I was extremely disappointed and wish I didn't buy PlayStation 4 when it first came out for new Silent Hill sneak peek in P.T. demo game. Kojima promised us for new Silent Hill, and it fall apart because Kojima having issued with Konami company. The point is, I have so much love for Silent Hill growing up. However! This game was on sale for 8 dollars, and I was like"Sure". Brought the game, download it, it bring back some nostalgia. I don't mind a shitty outdated graphic. I left it on idle when it started out okay. I didn't think it will be a issues. WRONG. When I got back on the game, it brought me SOOO much troubles! There is one puzzle that happened to be part of GOING FORWARD in the game. But it bugged and I was puzzled. I thought I might need to look around for some puzzle piece for the puzzle I'm struggle with. It have a part where it say "Confirm" and "Back" in puzzle game. Click on confirm dozen time, it does nothing. Knowing Silent Hill, puzzle play a big role in Silent Hill games. Walked around, couldn't find it, head to other location where I haven't explored, it got nothing important. I was like "Fuck it" maybe I should go back to that house where the puzzle piece at. I say to myself might I missed something. New problems showed up. It starting crashing the games. 4 or 5 time. I'm too stubborn and I wanna play Silent Hill. I get even more determined! I got frustrated. I decided to youtube it how to complete that chapter. Maybe if I finished the chapter, I might get out of annoying level. I youtube it up, somebody play it and that part where I say "Confirm" and "Back" Option? It worked for that person because he's playing it on Xbox. I was like "Okay, I should go back to that Puzzle." You thought the problem stopped there? You're wrong. Now I went back to that puzzle, it wont let me interact with it!!! Now I can't I processed the game. Reading other people negative reviewss, a lot of people have problems with this game. I knew the game have mix review. Some people say it worked, other have some trouble. This game... is dysfunctional. It shoudn't be on the market. It doesn't sound like the game company have any intention on fixing this game, therefore it shouldn't be on the market. I was exciting, now i feel robbed and it wasted my time. Silent Hill 2 remake look promising, Silent Hill: Homecoming is dumpster fire,"""""""
Please do not buy this game. My computer can run Elden Ring on high. Silent Hill: Homecoming isn't worth your money or your time. Not even for quarter or time you spend waiting for it to completed download. It not worth it. I took a risk knowing there is bad reviews. You don't need to risk it when someone else already done it.
soulless abomination of a game
like
Worst port I have played in a while.
Just emulate it with the rest of the silent hill games.
I bought this some 10-15ish years ago, tried to run it on a PC which was juuuust about the minimum required specs. It ran like butt and, frankly, wasn't very good. Not SH: Origins bad, but neither did I feel it was good enough to justify its existence.
But it's a new era, I've got a much nicer PC now, and moreover Konami's running a big sale that put Homecoming on the Steam frontpage (in hopes of drumming up preorders for the upcoming exhumation and reanimation of the lesser of the Silent Hill series' two actually worthwhile entries). Now seems like a good time for a reappraisal, maybe see what it's like when installed on a modern machine powerful enough to—
Oh. It runs like butt and isn't very good. Well, @$ me for trying I guess.
