Just wasted 1 hour of my life on a puzzle, turns out it was bugged.
Nice game!
Evoland had an interesting mechanic of creating a larger world via mechanic expansion, taking the player from an older style of game into a more modern era.
Evoland 2 didn't follow this kind of progression and seemed to jump all over the place. The story wasn't very interesting. Game mechanics felt too simple.
Literally just did the 4 console thing for a bit and honestly. 1/10 idea. Stupid game design. Stupid idea.
Tons of nostalgia and easter eggs for older gamers, and the constant change in gameplay keeps you on your toes. I absolutely enjoyed my playthrough.
The first Evoland is highly recommended for its novelty and wit. This is just bad. The developer tried to make a "real" game out of the idea and ended up taking the worst parts of many games without the spirit of the previous title. Its not a good RPG (flat and uniniteresting story - you better replay chrono trigger for the 10th time). Its not a good puzzler (either illogical or stock-cut-puzzles). Its not a good platformer (imprecise controls and very bad difficulty curve). Its not a good bullet-hell-shooter or street fighter. Its just mediocre-at-best in all aspects.
Its just a mush of games without the original self-ironic and nostalgic feeling.
This game changes, much like a museum adapting to transcend time and genres.
변화하는 게임.
The good:
- Story - Story is actually surprisingly decent for being a game trying to mimic your average "defeat bad guy with friendship and love" plotline, but the story actually does pack a few punches such as the plot twists and general subversion
- Soundtrack - it's great but it's not say... Nier Automata great
- Tons of small things to do, whenever it collectables or card games or the occasional side-quest
- World building - surprisingly decent for a game trying to be the literal cliché game, I think it's the best aspect of the game with how involved you feel in it and how there's tons of small dialogue for you to go over
- Graphics - Similarly the graphics hold up well and captivate all 3 (4) graphical eras, it's a really comfy experience overall
- Card game is actually kinda fun - Felt like a simplified HearthStone
- Pretty damn long game depending on pacing between 6-10+ hours (if you don't do extra content)
The bad:
- No actual "evoland" mechanic[1]
- Mechanics are subpar at best[2]
- So many bugs[3]
[1]This is in my opinion a big issue for why I can't recommend this game, there's virtually 0 actual "evolution" like there was in the first game, I had high hopes that this game would incorporate the idea of the first game on a much larger scale, whenever it be that you had to evolve/devolve your game to solve certain puzzles or get through certain obstacles, instead it's mostly just an aesthetic for time travel, which I suppose is novel and neat but does not follow the original concept what so ever.
It makes getting items from a chest really boring and predictable it'll either be:
- collectable star
- Red or Green Goo
- Card
- Maana
As such it doesn't feel rewarding at all to venture and find secrets.
[2] The mechanics that do exist is at best bland and just copied from other games (and watered down versions too) or at worst infuriating and annoying, whenever that be bosses that are way overtuned, items that screw you over (the bomb upgrade), buggy fights.
Boss fights don't feel very interesting with a few exceptions, they're either a copy from another game (and usually annoyingly implemented) or really unimaginative like the troll boss.
And boy do they love making you play the same damn mini-game over and over, (Wiking area for instance)
[3] I can't stress how annoying this game was to complete, there was so many damn bugs:
- rendering issue such as black textures or invisible textures that would overtime cause the game to freeze
- if you jump while attacking in side-scrolling mode you'll fall down,
- button presses don't register sometimes,
- bugged boss fights (if you die at some point during guitar hero boss the game can freeze)
[*] Not so serious: various bugs you can exploit to gain an advantage (corner at the chicken island makes you untouchable)
But hey, no DEI WOKE LGBTIQPATRICK BLM CAR UKRAINE TAIWAN SUSHI COMMUNISM GREEN ENERGY VACCINE messaginging so GOTY 10/10 le epic based put it into the alpha gamer curators list.
TL;DR: Don't buy unless on sale or just buy the evoland 1+2 and enjoy Evoland and try the 2nd game
Didn't like it. Way too many bugs. Had a lot of crashes. Maybe they fixed in legendary edition, but this version remains the same.
not good
Fantastic RPG from the developers of Evoland. Totally worth picking up. Good story, good music, fun sidequests and minigames.
I originally played the first game, Evoland, back in 2013 and while it was a relatively short game, it stuck with me - mainly for using an interesting gimmick. The game's whole premise was that as you progressed, you would unlock and evolve the world around you. For this reason, new features would be unlocked and the world would change to reflect different RPGs from various eras. It was a brilliant idea that I never found in any other game.
So when I learned that there was an Evoland 2 I had mixed feelings. On the one hand, I wanted to see more of what the first game accomplished. But on the other hand, how does one pull the same trick twice and still remain novel?
Well, the answer is they didn't.
See, in the first game, the devs gave full focus to the gimmick and then slapped into a basic story to tie it all together. This time, however, you could see that they had a full story and then they wrapped the gimmick around that.
In Evoland 2, you don't upgrade your world the same way you do in Evoland. Instead, you travel through time - similar to Chrono Trigger - and each era is represented in an RPG style. So where is the gimmick?
That would be with the different genres they snuck in, and boy did they ever. And yet, at no point did they feel forced. They may have felt out of place, but not forced.
Now while I enjoyed the game, there were a couple of things that bugged me. The first one was that there was no fast travel or escape from the dungeon option. So you spent a lot of time going back and forth to get to the time teleports to shift back and forth. At least, once you unlock the airship, traveling around gets faster.
The second thing that got under my skin was the lack of a sprint feature. It seems trivial, but the amount of times I wanted to get through an area quickly and the character - especially in the Past era - felt like he was moving slowly. It drove me nuts!
There were a couple of other things but overall I enjoyed the game. I would still recommend it, but I am at mixed feelings on whether I prefer the first game or this one.
