Home is Where One Starts... is a short, first-person exploration game in the same vein as Dear Esther or Gone Home. It’s an experience where every object has been carefully placed to tell a poignant story—a story about childhood, hope, and the miracle of memory. You play as a little girl from a broken home somewhere in the American South. Exploring the lonely countryside reveals clues and vignettes which help the player answer the question of where home is—and how one can get there.
Key features:
- A quiet, non-linear story told by the future self of a reflective narrator
- Inspired by the rural countryside and stories like John Steinbeck’s East of Eden and Terrence Malick’s The Tree of Life
- A 15-30 minute experience that can be completed in one sitting
- An experience that focuses on atmosphere rather than action or puzzles
- A rich, detailed environment that rewards players who explore with story insights and secret endings

Fantastic lil story, i really enjoyed the audio design and exploration, 10/10 i recommend
I am normally not the kind of person who is into "walking simulator" games where you're scouring an environment looking for clues etc but this game hit me in a very different way. I thought the voice overs of the protagonist were very heartfelt and the whole experience left me feeling nostalgic, melancholic, and even optimistic by the end. It actually made me start to fill in the blanks of what life was like for the protagonist and her family life with her alcoholic father. This is actually despite being a short experience a touching one and a creation that feels very personal to the creator. This is not a long experience but it was one I absolutely recommend giving a try, bought it on sale but even for $3 this is a pretty evocative experience.
It's really just a nice little space to wander around in while someone tells you a story, but that's not always a bad thing.
Another decent game with a story you kind of discover on your own. It's not super long (I spent some time afk) but a story that's a bit dark and left open ended. I followed a guide to 100% it, as you're supposed to kind of wander and explore the area (not too big) and find all the prompt areas.
If on sale, I think this would be enjoyable for most.
Yes.
Just bought it to support your new Game, but as it turned out...
I love this little narrative Adventure!
Beautiful game nice short story
it was a good story
I bought the game to support the developer but I also like walking simulators. It’s a calm short game with a nice voice actress and plays well on the Steam deck.

Such a beautiful, atmospheric story game. The music was beautiful. I loved the gentle sounds of nature, of the footsteps as you explore. It's a very short experience, but definitely worth it. I needed a bit of help with the hidden achievements, but I found most of the stuff by myself. All it takes is just walking and looking everywhere. It told a sad story, I think. Something I kind of related to. Really happy that I discovered this and played it. Excited to see what else this dev has out there. 10/10 100% wonderful experience.
feels like whomever made this wish they had made Gone Home. But they didnt, did they. They made this...
Home Is Where One Starts… May not have the overall polish or the emotional peaks that Gone Home or Dear Ester have, but there is something relatable in its simplicity. Even if your home life wasn’t as turbulent as the narrator’s, many can relate to the desire to escape the community we grew up in. The game gracefully lets you stew in the nostalgia and pain that comes from the passage of time. And shows that you can leave a place but you can’t run from how it’s shaped you.
