Описание

There are so many games set in space, willingly limiting their scope to new instances of Star Wars-style ships, blasters and myths. Devouring Stars is an attempt at expanding the horizon of "celestial" games, focusing on the eerie beauty and poetry of distant stars, blackholes and mysterious corners of our universe.

What if you could litterally unhook the stars? What if you could be a galactic-sized entity?

In Devouring Stars you play a tribe of godlike entities trapped in Tartarus, a corner of the universe as far beneath hell as heaven is high above the earth. Hunted by 4 other tribes, you have been given the ability to draw your own fate. But to what extent?

Devouring Stars uses a couple of unique mechanics to create a different experience on the RTS and space exploration genre. Your entities have the ability to "devour" starfields, creating dynamic nebulas that will protect them. There's no tech tree or building facilities in Devouring Stars: your entities are able to merge in order to create advanced units with special abilities. Depending on the set of entities you start the game with, you will be able to go for different strategies that will evolve during the game.

Devouring Stars is mainly inspired by Dan Simmons' Illium but also by games like Homeworld, Eufloria, Starcraft or Faster Than Light.

FEATURES

  • 15 advanced entities to unlock by merging the 4 basic ones (earth, air, fire, water). Each advanced unit has a specific ability like freezing enemies, controling them, attacking them from afar...
  • Generated starfields offering a wide range of beautiful and differently balanced layouts
  • Thousands of different settings through generated scenarios
  • Direct attack, escape route, diversion... many ways to go through the game depending on your strategic choices, your entities and your enemies
  • 4 enemy tribes with specific features and behaviors
  • Unique particule system able to display thousands of dynamic stars
  • And some well hidden secrets...

I enjoyed playing for the first hour although the premise of the game is quite simple. But after that the game broke and wasn't displaying properly, tried reinstalling which didn't work. It could be something wrong with fullscreen or the resolution but when you can't select the settings menu because it's off the screen it counts as a game breaking bug. It seems the deveploers have no intention of fixing this as there is another reviewer who had this problem 2 years ago so BUY AT YOU OWN RISK

I highly recommend this beautifully animated game. It's only downfall is some bug that made the full screen mode incompatible with my computer, hopefully this isn't the case for all computers

I really enjoyed this easy to play game that was super enjoyable and even re downloaded it yesterday after not playing for a long time. However, i encountered a glitch in my first hour of play that forced me to reboot the game because I couldn't press any buttons. Today when I booted up the game it is appearing 90% off screen and is unplayable. Highly recommend once this issue is resolved.

The game broke. I had to Alt Tab while the game was booting and now the game is in the wrong resolution and is "drawn" 90% off the screen, so most of my screen is black with the very top of the normal game menu cropping up on the bottom. It's now unplayable which is a damn shame because I used to love this little time burner, not even reinstalling has fixed this shit.

I had a great time with this game, my only complaint is that there is not a secret ending for getting all of the guardians.

Pls fix biareos. My 1000 star Chaos died to a 120 star Biareos. Not nice especially when the enenmy portal spawns 5+ biareos'.

This is one of the most interesting sifi RTS s out there. Many others put their skill into making long, complex unit trees and buildings with two or three resources to be managed and collected. Not so with Devouring Stars. Here there is a simple idea. You control a set of senitent singularity-like beings and then use these to gather stars that are used as ammunition to crush other such entities and rip space asunder to calming piano music. All to reclaim your lost glory.

Currently, the game has a great singleplayer. Multiplayer is still in the works. However, the singleplayer is really quite fun. Well worth ten bucks or a sale price. The dev is quite active and will try to help with any bugs you encounter. There are a few such bugs, but they are quick and easy fixes.

Gameplay is simplistic in its elements, you can combine and split entities to make new/more entities, share stars, and attack/move but the metagame is really new or odd depending on your take. The graphics look as nice in-game as they do in the trailer.

Buy this game. You won't regret it.

Devouring Stars was a surprisingly good indie game, which I expected to occupy me for a couple hours but not for an extended period of time.

I give the game overall a 8.5/10.

The art is great, much better than you see in most games. It is very fluid and beautiful, with no choppiness at all.

The gameplay is good, though it can feel somewhat stale at times, though not always. Even after it starts to feel repetitive it can easily be refreshed by the next section of the game where you may be forced to play with different entities.

The story is unique and very good, and many times the characters you play as (or entities you control) can and will die (permadeath, in a sense of that unique individual) and need replacement, but otherwise they carry on. It creates a feeling of attachment, then loss, when an entity has been with you on a number of different chapters in any given destiny, and then dies due to your poor tactical planning.

The game runs perfectly, I don't have an FPS counter but I could easily say I've been at 60FPS the entire time with no lag spikes.

Overall the game is great. I bought it as a time passer and am thoroughly engrossed to my surprise. I do think it is a worthwhile buy and recommend it to those reading this.

This game is truly bizarre. It has a nice atmosphere but it doesn't seem like a whole lot of forethought was put into the actual gameplay. I'd avoid this game unless you're just into the idea for the art.

I have never been interested in RTS games before. Either they didn't catch my attention or there was just too much to manage for me to handle. Devouring Stars was different. It captured me with its uniqueness by creating a game surrounding Greek titans as well as having a beautiful OST and artstyle. Crafting units is easy and isn't too much of a big hassle in my opinion. The game, however, is a bit short and I would love it to have a much more deeper plot but it is fine as it is. There are secret levels that can pose a challenge to those who seek it (There is a guide on how to get there). After I saw a gameplay of this game, I just had to have it. Would really recommend for those who want a casual, well-done RTS game.

Devouring Stars is one of those little indie games that you never give much thought until you finally break down and buy the game. After everything gets set up in the beginning, the various controls, how the game works and the all important vague back story, you realize that you've just stumbled across an amazing find in the realm of video game gold. Devouring Stars is built for, what I think, is a very select group of people; those that like back story but don't feel it's the win-all for a game to be great. This game has a very vague story to it that really makes you pay attention to it in the beginning and then seems to just drop it all together whilst you play the game. But in truth is more of a subconscious, behind the scenes telling that really, in my opinion, makes this game so great. The premises of Devouring Stars, without giving anything important away, is that there are tribes of Ancient Titans living in the deep of Tartarus, which is the Ancient Greek form of deep dark hell. And these titans take many forms; from the smallest once based around the elements, Earth, Fire, Water and Wind; to the greater titans like Chaos itself. The tribe you follow is the tribe of Chaos and its story of death and hopeful rebirth. In the beginning of the game you see your grand titan Chaos being destroyed by the other tribes. You then learn that all that survived of this once great tribe, was a lowly fire titan. Which you now must use to enact the rebirth of Chaos. This in turn leads to the discovery of other Chaotians still living in various parts of the universe, and of mysterious beings that may or may not help you on your journey. At the end of the day, if you don't think that story alone is enough for you to buy the game, check out some game play of it on YouTube. It will take a bit to get accustomed to. Not everyone is good at throwing stars at black holes trying to kill them..

And here is that game play I was talking about!:

I found the first 40 minutes of this game so lackluster that I have no desire to explore the rest of it.

The "strategy" for the first 40 mins consists of telling stars to attack enemy stars, if your stars have more energy then they win... And in the absence of interesting stratgeyI didn't find any other redeeming factors like an interesting story line or quirky personalities or... things that make a game enjoyble.

Easy to pick up, levels of varying difficulty, a kickass story inspired by Greek gods, and one of the best soundtracks of the year. You should check it out!

Uninstalled after 20 minutes. A boring game with pretty graphics hampered by annoying melodramatic mumb-jumbo, and unintuitive controls. Waste of money. There are free games on the web that involve similar mechanics and they do it far better.

It's a great game, despite it's simplicity in design, it's beautiful. In fact, it is beautifully simplistic, it has a kind of beauty that no AAA game could match, because no AAA game would ever be this simplistic in design and such. The story is there, it isn't super hugely important to the game, unless I missed some of it. But I still love to play it every now and again, and I just enjoy seeing the different ways I can get my stars to swirl.

Side note, in case a Dev reads this and is still looking at fixing bugs, I found that sometimes when you are using Rhea(I had used Clotho beforehand and had the Adelei(not sure if i remembered their name correctly) as allies and had Rhea controlling them) you can end up teleporting your allies somewhere else on the map, instead of just moving them inside of Rhea to protect them. Just something to look at, it only happened a couple times and I wasn't able to recreate it reliably, just once or twice.

I like it! The concept is cool and the controls are easy.
You can feel it's an alpha on some places however.
A little tweek here and there and we are golden! There
is a LOT of potential and there are so many combinations
to make the game interesting.

Also it's just great to look at, the stellar map truly makes you
feel like you are gazing upon existance like some cosmic being,
or god. The little captions inbetween destinies, and at the beginning
of battles do tell a story. Even great cosmos eating entities wage war, and
claim territory, they fight among eachother even as they hunt you.

Which makes you think, are the gods, or the titans, or great devils and
creators in the unverse, truly so different than us?

So since i have played this game for a while, time to give you my first impression:

So this is the first RTS i have played for quiet some time, and i realy enjoy it. You don't have to controll to many units but still it has enough tactical depths due to the merging of entities to keep you playing the game for some time. Which is supportet by the randomly generated levels.
You every run with a few standart units you can select, and when you finished a map (consisting of serveral levels) you move on the the next on and unlock new slots so you can bring more entities into the next level. Plus you are able to keep the advanced (merged) entities if you dont loose them in battle. Thus, over time you are able to build a small army to fight you enemies.
There are several different scenarios you can find yourself into, like a trap or fights for portals (which bring you to the next level).
I quiet enjoy the artstyle of the game and the background (beeing an entitie which can devour stars is kind of cool :P)
Although the main reason i bought it was the freature to get new units by combining basic ones. That is kind of cool, but i hope in future development it will be more nessecary to switch between the different advanced units more, however it might also be that i'm not far enough into the game to realy make that nessecary.
Potenitall buyers should keep one thing in mind: Eventhough it says "multiplayer" right now this is local only (and even that is not the real game). I hope they will be able to work on a real multiplayer cause the features this game offers for that are great and i would love to battle other players with and devour their part of the universe :P
