Game looks nice, has some serious bugs to fix. until Devs fix issues I cannot recommend. Story seems much too short for the price paid.

ParVaNeh: Legacy of Light's Guardians

...is a action-adventure game. Fadia's village is under attack by the Khazdaks, so he takes it upon himself to discover the source of the disease and rid Naria of this threat.

Game Description & Mechanics

It is a typical top-view adventure game in the veins of classical Zelda games, walking around in all directions (8 directions, actually, since there's no controller support to enable an analog control), attacking in melee with a sword or at a distance with a sling. You can jump across slim gaps or climb ledges of a limited height. There are levers, karts, and other objects that can be interacted with and moved around, whether to smash enemies or to use as platforms.

A crafting system is introduced through the use of resources in a Survo puzzle: a table grid in which you must place the correct resources, and quantity of resources, in each row and columns. Each craftable item will be different (both in terms of puzzle and resource usage). Up to three items you craft often, such as swords or boxes, can be saved to a quick-craft bar so that you may make some on the fly without resorting to solving their puzzles each time.

What I enjoyed

I found myself very interested in the world and lore the game established. Nothing monumental, but very reminiscent to some Fantasy JRPG storylines. You find story pages along your adventure that adds lore and backstory to a past war against the Khazdaks, and how the people of the village of Naria stood up to save the world against the Disease, creatures that invade and destroy the world following someone being infected by a disease. This seems to set the table for an epic journey through a large world.

While finicky at first, I quickly got used to the game controls. Anyone playing a twin-stick shooter with a mouse and keyboard will see what I mean. With each creature you kill, resources are dropped, but only for crafting recipes you know. This makes sense, as why would you collect a resource you have no idea you need until you actually learn a recipe that uses it? Resources can also be collected by smashing boxes or in chests.

What bothered me

There's a lack of polish across multiple aspects of the game. In addition to controls being very finicky, the entire engine seems to have an issue with detection: hit detection (when attacking enemies, or when enemies attack you), ledge detection (when trying to jump or climb) and floor detection (when jumping across gaps or from a platform to another). Dialog texts are full of typos, translation mistakes, or text that expand beyond the size of the dialog box itself, often missing the last few words or sentences.

I was left speechless when the game ended. Not because of the story, not because of the ending, but because of how short the game was. After fighting an extremely easy boss, I assumed I was done with the introductory tutorial level and getting ready to set out into the world and finally start the real game, but no, that was it! "Wait, what?" That's right, the game was finished! Even the story was pointing to this being the beginning, the town elder speaking of the awakening of the ParVaNeh, as Fadia leaves Naria to save the world from the Khazdak.I mean, there isn't even 2 hours of content, half my Steam playtime being spent figuring out how the game controls and graphical setup worked

My Verdict: ★★☆☆☆ - "Forget it."

Imaging playing Zelda: The Ocarina of Time and, upon leaving Kokiri Forest for the first time, the game was over. That's exactly how ParVaNeh: Legacy of Light's Guardians felt, except for being even shorter. There's no way this should be marketed as a full game. This has got to be a demo for another, larger game that was abandoned. It's not bad, but it's unacceptably short. A real deception.

This was just my opinion.

Introduction
Parvaneh: Legacy of the Light's Guardians is an isometric adventure game, where in the role of a boy living in a peaceful little town, the player has to fight the monsters besieging it and save the world from spreading illness.

Being made by a little indie studio, Parvaneh shows right away, that it is not a AAA adventure game, but more of a niche adventure for children or relaxed gamers with a simple crafting system, a simple combat and a simple story. If you are looking for a high quality long term game, you better move on.

Since this game receives a vote down from me, I start off with the negative aspects that contributed towards my decision.

🔴 CONs 🔴

  • Simple gameplay, easy combat, boring minigames.
  • Aged graphics with low amount of detail and a lot of re-used models.
  • Repetetive soundtrack and unsatisfying music background.
  • Buggy jumping visuals and physics, which makes harder to finish minigames.
  • Short, about 120 minutes gameplay.
  • Nothing, that would make it stand out in the mass of indie games.
  • Multiple little quality of life issues.
  • No english voice acting.

🔵 PROs 🔵

  • Nice for children or families
  • Easy to handle and short to finish
  • Neat characters/ NPCs and monsters

Gameplay & Story: 4/10
The story is basically told by the intro video - there is a disease spreading that makes monsters pop up. Once the player finds out where the evil is coming from, the quest on killing the boss monster to save the town begins. The gameplay consists of striking down hundreds of enemies on the way to fulfill smaller quests that chain up into the main story and crafting some items for progress. Encountering some traps and mini-jumping puzzles along the way adds some diversity to the gameplay.

Combat & Challenge : 2/10
The combat is literally garbage and pretty broken in Parvaneh. A lot of times the character does not even attack when you click on your mouse, other times you get stuck in enemies or the jumping animation gets you surrounded. The challenge consists of trying not to break your mouse while smashing the attack key. The enemies die from few swings and even if the player dies, you get revived back up with almost full health pool, so its kind of impossible to die in this game. The jumping puzzles are just a distraction instead of a challenge.

Graphic & Interface : 4/10
The graphics are aged and do not that many details. There are also only three types of monsters, so we cant talk about a great level of detail or innovation here either. The interface looks like it's from a 2005 game, while the release date says summer 2016. The rating given is not lower since the game keeps consistent neat comic style through out the game.

Progress & Mini-Games : 5/10
The progress is insanely quick, since the game is quite short and the quests are mostly fetch something or save someone, which is done in just few minutes on a map that small, that can be crossed by walking. Still, most of the time the player is traveling and fighting, only slowed down by the jumping puzzles on the way, which are also easy and quick to get through. There is also a mini-game for crating, that is rather simple as well.

Audio & Immersion : 4/10
The audio of monsters was fine, but that is about it. The voice acting, music and other sounds were low quality and noticeably poorly made. The weapons did not feel impactful and hearing same music over the course of 2 hours with this quality gets anyone bored with it rather quickly.

Side-Notes

  • This game offers a short single player campaign of about 2 hours. There are no other mods or multiplayer.
  • This game contains steam trading cards which are easy to achieve.
  • [*]This game offers almost none replayability, since it is short, non-repetative and quite boring. The story is so simple, that there will be no satisfaction in replaying it another time for the story either.

Conclusion
Parvaneh: Legacy of the Light's Guardians is a game made not by a huge AAA studio with a great budget, but by a smaller indie game studio, and that is sadly really noticable in this case. It still has some bugs and technical issues, the story is short and boring, the graphic is aged and the interface dull. The music and audio are not worth mentioning either, so if you somehow get your hands on it for free (for example through bundles or give-aways), you might spend the two hours to get it through with your little 3-year-old child sitting on your lap, but besides that, I can not recommend it.

I hope this review helps you making the decision if its worth buying and installing this game. Rate and leave a comment if you enjoyed reading it.

I wanted to like this game, because I find the world charming. A lot of work went into worldbuilding, with story pages to find and some cutscenes that could be found in anime. I also liked the music and other sound effects, even though there wasn't much variation here.

What wasn't good? The controls. I'm absolutely positive this game has the worst controls I've ever had the misfortune to use. You only have the ability to move with WASD, but the game often requires you to climb or jump gaps. This is supposed to happen "automatically" when you go in the direction of the gap/height. Something does indeed happen, but... the game checks and rechecks whether you are on or off a box, slingshotting Fadia (the character) between the top of the box and the ground. As movement like this is something you have to use in a boss fight, it becomes frustrating fast.

And that boss itself... I restarted the fight many times, as one attack kept bugging the player character, causing me to become stuck. Good luck killing anything like that.

Another negative was the combat, though this ties into the controls. It's terribly hard to tell when you hit something, if there is no HP gauge, because you get no feedback.

I bought the game on sale, but even at a reduced price, I can't recommend this. Spare yourself the headache.

Edit: Now that I've finished the game, I came here to say that I can't recommend it. It's too buggy and too short to be considered finished and the only real challenge here is trying to have a good control over your character. It could be so much more...

A well-designed adventurer with a engaging story, Parvaneh is fun and enjoyable, but it still has to evolve. First of all, it needs a save button or something that indicates when the autosave happens, because I don't know. The game also needs a jump button. There's a lot of adventurers out there that doesn't need one, but it's not the case for this game. Sometimes it's a little hard to control Fadia (the main character), specially when we have to jump across gaps or reach a platform, thus meaning that the game needs to improve its overall mechanics. Also, some of the missions that I've found so far lack a little bit of creativity, so do the enemies. Besides bringing up these problems, I'm really liking it, this game has a world and a mythology of it's own and the devs are clearly putting some effort into bringing an original material.

Suggesting this game is really hard. There are some "Show Stopper" bugs and problems in this game which can totally ruin the player's experience, problems like jumping and platforming mechanics (which almost made me quit the game) and also enemies AI that makes no fun for player during combat scenes. About graphics, I enjoyed the overall theme and this part of game is well performed. But after all, this game is worth trying and if you are a fan of "Fable" series or "Zelda" (like me), I could recommend this game.

The game starts off a little boring but its to get you to understand the game better and then it starts getting better little by little. The gameplay has a little bit of the Zelda feel to it. The crafting reminds me a little bit of Minecraft as far as placing materials in boxes in a certain order to make items. The game overall is really buggy but still playable. The game feels more like an early access game with only 2.5-3hrs of gameplay. Based on the ending I thought more would be added with updates but its been over 9 months and there is nothing as far as an update for it or a message from the developer. I wouldn't recommend this game to anyone.
