I see great potential in this game, i really wish there were more players who gave this game a chance. Perhaps the devs can make this free to play and make cosmetics to help fund the game to keep it going. Overall its a shame to see a good game go down in a unnoticed state.
Great game. I love these kinds of sword fighting games that are easy to play, with skillful mechanics. Especially the artstyle which had me walking around the maps the first time I played just admiring the beauty and love put into this game. Even certain newer games lack the kind of detail that the devs have put into the maps for Hanako. Combat feels good, AI is good, the game is beautiful.
The only problem is the player base. The dev's normally run playtests and get people in the discord to play and stuff on Wednesday and Sundays, unfortunately this doesn't coincide with my schedule much, but there is light. Highly recommend playing this game because if it had enough players, it would be one of my favorites.
Really great hack n slash game :) I enjoy it even if I'm against mostly AI. The AI is well developed and sometimes feels like a player. Looking forward in its further development and improvement!
Cool game but couldn't get anything but bot lobbies. Hopefully it grows
Great game but barely anyone plays it. Basically a super-simplified For Honor but only the Japanese faction; the combat feels like a smoother version of the third-person combat in Star Wars Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast. It's been in Early Access for going on four years, but the dev team is very small—they actually update the game quite often though, despite the size of their team. I would love to see the community grow for this one.
Edit - Response to Developer: Sorry my positive review and praise wasn't positive enough for you.
I got this game a while back, Not expecting to enjoy it as much as I do;
The game overall reminds me of old school JA mods' and JA itself; Overall yes needs polish, but if you can get a game*(in aus server numbers are low)
Its rather fun;
In effect I'd say if the devs can get the funding via sales and keep pushing out updates this game will in time be pretty great;
And for anyone looking for an OG JA experience this is pretty close
Great game. Very much like a Japanese Chivalry. It would benefit greatly from a lock on target feature as the melee can be very fast paced an losing your targety can mean your dead.
The game is made by a small team of people and I gotta say, the game has surprisingly good quality for an indie game in it's early access state, the graphics look like a 3D traditional Japanese painting animated and is really quite good, the combat is smooth and nice and it just feels right. A few problems (which will certainly be fixed) is some of the clunkiness in the heavy attack stance, it just feels like it's supposed to be fast but ends up being slow and odd, also the fact that you won't find any matches outside of events in their discord server (chill community, very nice) but I don't consider it much as the game is in early access and will be better in the future.
Side note: there are actually cosmetic in-game purchases you can make with real money but it's mostly just under $5 and honestly I'd get it just to support the devs. If you're considering buying the game just buy it when it goes on sale and you'll get an incredibly satisfactory price.
A nice early access game and fun to play, expecting more update and more suprise in thy future
Endless replay value; bunch of different character features, unique maps, game modes, and experiences every match. Instant nostalgia for any fan of the old Star Wars games, but adapted for the new era of multiplayer.
This game is beautifully crafted and a lot of fun when you get a group together. The community is pretty small and I wish more people would start to play it. I've been participating in weekly play tests with the devs every Wednesday night and those are a lot of fun! You can really see they progress they make in the game from week to week. They take your feedback during the play tests and take what is viable and work it into their development plan. You can tell the dev team is very passionate about this game and listens to the community for feedback. There is a great mix of game modes, maps and character classes to choose from. I love the art style and the maps are truly beautiful.
The game is easy to pick up and a lot of fun with friends. With two full teams the game's really enjoyable, especially with the newly added game modes. They have an old school capture the flag mode with hidden team buffs and curses that really help to turn the tide against the enemies. The devs are constantly updating the game too and hold weekly events, so it's fun to wail on them (or get wrecked by them)! :D

Hanako is a labor of love, and the art makes my pants wet.
Support the game as best as you can; it's really low population right now and could use you there. The game is really a blast when people hop in and play.
I really enjoy this game
The artistic direction is great and reminiscent of all time favourite games like gothic or arx fatalis (but obviously more 2019ish) The music is good and hell its SENGOKU ERA JAPAN this is right up my alley and tbh the only reason I bought it cuz I don't like online games. Sadly there isn't a huge playerbase so you'll mostly have to deal with bots for now (I guess it'll be better when it leaves EA) or jump in the destroy the devs events (which are super fun but sadly not in my timezone sooo they happen around 4AM for Europeans)
The combat is kinda clunky but deep enough and really fun once you get used to it.
Overall I want to see this game succeesd as it is a solid 6/10 and with a little bit more polish and a bigger playerbase it couldd be awesome.
It's clunky yet, not very polished, ninja controls aren't too good yet.
It's pretty simple and primitive, even though there's a skill system, and the fights MAY be fun.
IF you could try it actually. The playerbase is VERY low for now. It's understandable and not to blame.
Good luck with this in the future!
Refunded till better time.
Lots potential... I rarely by early access anymore, been burned too many times. Gorgeous style, controller support, good music, combat gameplay appears to have potential. Needs more players, hopefully it gets them.
TLDR: Lots of potential, kind of clunky, worth a look.
I am really on the fence about whether or not to reccomend this game. It has alot of potential and I will definitely be checking it out again further down the road but as of right now I feel the combat is lacking a little. Your hits dont have any sort of impact (other than the stuns/knockdowns) the blocking is not bad but feels weird and the heavy attacks I found to be awful, your charcter does a jump slash in the direction you press and its just doesnt feel right, I like the idea of the jumping and more mobile striking but the way its implemented I personally dont enjoy. Also having a proper dodge such as a simple side step or hoping back to avoid strikes would improve the flow of combat alot as it is right now its either people standing and swinging like mad or jumping around swinging like mad lol
The source of this game is heartfelt; when you learn what spawned it's creation. A symbol of remembrance, and mourning. Honestly, look into the story of the devs previous to making this game. Now, emotion set aside; critique and logic in place.
The art is a bit rough around the edges, but in itself attractive by being 'rough'.
The gameplay.. Hoooooo boy. Its fun. Reminscent of the old Jedi Knight melee combat; just take out the force powers and add ninja, samurai, and bishamonten monks. (which I personally had been waiting to make a resurgance or reapperance)
The community is fantastic; im talking directly to you Hanako Discord Server. I highly recommend if you pick this up for the price well worth whats offered- Join the Discord server. For now, written at 1/4/2018 most matches are organized on there. Thats not my actual reason for telling you to join it however; my reason is that the people right now are just cool lol. Just hop on, ask to play; someone is bound to join in and more usually follow. A very community oriented game, and that is a good thing in my opinion.
9/10
Hanako: Honor and Blade. Wow where to start here. The graphics are akin to a graphic novel in motion. That's the closest description I can give for the artwork. the background of feudal japan is a beautiful backdrop in which to do battle against other samurai!
The game mechanics are smooth and there is a learning curve for each of the three classes you can play. I would heavily suggest running through the training sims to get a good grasp of what your chosen class is capable of doing.
The traditional music which plays in the background can help to immerse you in the game as well as the sounds of the sword being drawn, the Naginata delivering a blow, and the sound of the ninja's Kusarigama flying through the air.
I am especially impressed with the way the Kenshi fights as the swordsmanship is fairly accurate. Slashes, thrusts, overhead blows, and even the way the sword is drawn is amazing for a video game. Even the footwork and stance have been addressed. The Naganatashi also has impressive moves! As far as the ninja goes, you really need to stay mobile with him because he has very light armor. However, played correctly, he is definitely a force to be reckoned with!
Replayability is also there. Team v team scenarios with different objectives keep a person engaged and on their toes!
Although this is an early access game, I believe the potential here to make it an outstanding indie!
I just hope that more players gravitate to the game as I have. real players will make this game awesome! the bots tend to get stuck but that too can be improved I am sure. Only small bugs I found so far. Bots being stuck on rocks and not being able to attack if you are positioned in a certain place.
My overall Rating for this one is an 8/10 - Great work so far on this early access indie! can't wait to see the future improvements!
Ok so Hanako is a game where you play as 3 classes, Kenshi, Ninja, Naginatashi, and each class has its own set of unique moves and a different playstyle. Every character is fun and there are more coming soon (I CANT WAIT).The artstyle is fabulous and the music is truely fantastic. The maps are very detailed and by looking further into them you notice how beautiful they truely are. But the best part of the game is the combat. The combat is amazing, it not only requires skill but patience too and some fights can really make you sweat. With all the special moves each character has, every fight is unqiue and more intense.
The game is a hidden gem on steam and becasue of it being a 'hidden gem' it does not have a huge fanbase. But you can change that, by buying the game.
The devs are super friendly and they will respond to any questions immiedately, especially MpactMATT who said ill get LIVERPOOL SKIN FOR KENSHI <3.
So overall the game is a masterpiece and i highly recommend it!
