very good game !!
The Dark Stone from Mebara
10/10
So poorly balanced. There is a line between being difficult and just being poorly designed and this game is the later. The game throws you into ridiculously hard fights right out of gates (as soon as the story stops blathering on) You can't avoid them, your not prepared for them (as in you hardly have the ability to heal and have very few items) and the only way to get through them is by luck and save scumming. Give this game a pass because this isn't a challenging game, its a stupid frustrating one.
6/10
Well worth playing for a really good Lovecraft atmosphere, don't worry too much about the negative reviews.
It's short, and very much limited by it's RPG maker style.
However, if you like the old turn-based RPGs, you'll find the combat and item hunting familiar.
Unless you can't stand the old school aesthetic, just put in the short amount of time required and look forward to really well written lovecraftian tale.
the game is windowed mode only, if you want to take a screenshot it will reset the game. won't recommend it
A few hours in now and I think I've pushed my sanity as far as it can go.
First up, the game was clearly intended to be a lovecraftian hard challenge. Every fight is dangerous and healing highly difficult. The concept is just fine, but the mechanics and balance just don't support this style of play.
Even with the first set of basic enemies there is one that can 50% your entire party at full health. You can deal with this, but then you need to factor in the ATB time and Tech points are random. This mean's he'll often go first or you can't count on having the tech points to stop him. Combine this with a fairly high random miss chance and suddenly you're spamming reload to beat a boss, not because you're tactics are wrong but because of random dice rolls.
I spent an hour at the first boss because I can one-shot every enemy outside, but the boss cultist happens to have 2 of the sorcerers that can 50% your entire party. What do you think happens when both happen to use that ability before my turn even comes? It's okay though, you just have to hit the sorcers 3-4 times... miss... miss... miss...
The other half of the game, and where it really could shine, is investigation scenes. You search peaceful areas for clues to advance the story. Read the riddles, find the pieces, solve the puzzles. These scenes can be pretty fun but, along with most of the game, they lack guidance.
Half of the interactable items are highlighted by sparkles. But the other half of the puzzles aren't marked and worse, can only be activated under certain conditions. For example: I check all of the lockers with no indication of interaction but later find a piece of paper that needs a writing utensil. Only now can you check the lockers and find the required item."
On that note, I'm currently stuck because I've read message that says "Send a letter" and when I try to send a letter I get "I need more information". I can't find the right hidden pixel to proceed with the story and I don't know if there is a tile that I've missed or if it's a bug.
As for bugs? They are plentiful.
In my current confusion, I've walked through the sides of a locked door and accidently replayed a cutscene from the past only to crash the game. Also the "Smelling Salts" item that claim to "Heal a KOed" character? It turns out it's a useful healing item, but doesn't work on KOed characters.
I really want to like this game, but the truth is that I don't. I can't recommend it even with caviets. There is unrealized potential, but it's too far from realized for me to recommend it to anyone.
Terrible, terrible game. It is horrendously imbalanced. Every random encounter is a life-or-death situation because all your characters are always very low on health. There's nowhere to heal and virtually no items to use to heal yourself with.
I bought this game despite some of the bad reviews because it was only $0.80.
Don't make the same mistake I did. Take that $0.80 and swallow it. You'll get a lot more enjoyment out of passing coins the following day than you will by playing this game.
Pretty good game if you like a good Lovecraftian story. Themes of hidden knowledge and madness. Some detectives from the thirties get involved in a case with a mysterious black stone...
Pros- Good story and charachters. You're forced to use imagination due to graphics. JRPG style battles can be fun.
There are some cons. Not very polished. Bugs and poor graphics. Must save often (manually). Looking for items there are few hints (eg just try every bookcase in the room for the book).
Okay so not an awesome game but if you like the theme, worth it. Otherwise not outstanding and a little expensive for what you get (maybe five or six hours long).
Nice indie game. I had fun playing it!
Great indie. I'll play some more when I find the time to explore it.
UPDATE: One of the major areas I was originally uncertain about (whether combat ever gets any easier) has been answered - it does, for the most part. It's still challenging, and harder than average, but the almost-unwinnable situation I described from the opening combat sequence of the game has thankfully not been repeated yet. Doesn't mean I haven't had to retry fights, but they were merely hard and not unfair. So if that's something that's keeping you on the fence, I wanted to pop in and add this update to what I'd originally written.
As an avid fan of Lovecraft and Lovecraft-inspired games, I was immediately attracted to the idea of an old-school RPG set in a Lovecraftian environment. We've had adventure games, "shooters" (or at least, first-person games) and strategy games based on the works of the gentleman from Providence, but no straight-up RPGs that I can recall. The Dark Stone from Mebara therefore seemed to fill some void in the gaming world.
I've not played a great deal of it yet, but here are my impressions so far:
Graphics:
Yes, they are 2D. But they are really rather good for 2D - certainly, the games looks better at fullscreen than, say, Gemini Rue. The graphics most resembled Arcanum's, to my eye, and although 3D graphics have evolved to the point where we now have good levels of detail, there will always be something artistic and interesting about 2D graphics done well. Not a 5 because there are some oddities - a secretary standing inside of her chair instead of being seated, etc.
Sound:
I like the music quite a bit. Sounds good, very atmospheric and does a good job setting the mood. It is perhaps not particularly original in concept, but well-executed all the same.
Story/Writing:
Haven't gotten that far yet, but the story so far seems a bit different from other HPL-inspired games, so points for originality and for tapping into the "unknown from beyond" theme of Lovecraft's that was so central to his work, instead of simply focusing on the horrible monsters (though those are in plentiful supply as well). The dialogue and descriptive text is functional but well-written.
Gameplay:
I died 5 times in the first fight before finally winning on a lucky critical hit. Going to hope that the recent changes to difficulty plus gaining some levels will help here. The first monster one-hit killed anyone that wasn't guarding, and confusion would usually cause one of my own party to kill the other remaining member. Probably the first monster should either hit less hard, or not use confusion. Smelling salts didn't seem to work when I used them. On the positive side, movement is easy, interface is simple, and I'm used to the old-school notion of interacting with everything to see if anything is there.
Overall:
I would recommend this to those with a fondness for Lovecraft or for old-school RPGs. Very little in the way of hand-holding, so if you've only experienced games that highlight all your interactable objects and tell you everywhere to go, you're going to need to put your big boy/girl pants on for this one. The only area with which I have any qualms is the difficulty, and it's possible those concerns will be alleviated as I move onward in the game. As far as 2D, old-school games go, as well as in filling the need for Lovecraftian RPGs, I'm definitely encouraged by the Dark Stone from Mebara.
One question .. What did these guys THINK, when they thought about how difficult this game should have been?????
OK .. First creature battle, you get your ASS KICKED! ..
OK, is there ANY oher smart and alternative options in battle?.. NO!
OK .. So i killed the damned creature, is there anyway of reviving your health (Sleep, Heal whatever) .. NO! .. Only means are drinking water and eating breed and apples (which restores absolute minumum health).
OK .. I guess that my health, sanity exc .. Will be at maximum when i level up then? .. NO!!!!
OK ... Well... I probely will recive some equipment from the cultists i kill, like breed and apples? ... NO! .. You only get holy water, which revives your sanity!
OK ... I guess that, getting levels up will improve your combat abilities quite a lot .. NOT REALY! .. You still getting your ass kicked!
ehhhhh .... ehhhh ... ehhhh ... What the hell?!!
Well, that´s just for starters .. The story sucks, graphic sucks (not even has a nice retro, basic to it)
Only one good thing .. the soundtrack!
God damnit!
Fun short game. The fights were challenging, much tougher than I expected, and the storyline was neat with lots of great homages to Lovecraft's works.
Your main character is a detective, that should give you a (ha) clue of what to expect; examine everything. The difficulty of finding everything may put some off, but if you're stuck, it's probably because you haven't examined everything or haven't from the right side. Pay attention, there are little details that may be easy to miss; it doesn't just hand you the answers.
At the moment can't even get past library...is it just me?
