This and Dragonfall punch far above their weight. They don't have Larian money but it doesn't matter. The characters are sharp, the scenarios interesting, and the combat fun and varied. I don't recommend the Dead Man's Switch campaign, but this one rocks.
Shadowrun: Hong Kong is the last of the Harebrained Schemes Shadowrun trilogy and the best one of them.
The game is still based on the tabletop RPG, which has solid mechanics that translate well into a cRPG. However, this time around it feels like there are more roleplay options and little flourishes tied to your stats and skills.
The big innovation is having Matrix combat be partly real time - when there are no (active) enemies on the screen you avoid detection by timing your movement and skirting sightlines. It's a bit jarring at first, but by the end of the game it feels natural. A hacking minigame has also been added this time around, which makes the Matrix part of the game feel more distinct.
The story for this one is good, significantly longer than both Shadowrun Returns and SR: Dragonfall, but it never feels like it drags. This time around your decisions during the game seem to carry more weight at the end as well, which is nice.
All in all, it's an amazing game and I highly recommend it!

Having played the previous two games, I found this one to be an improvement in some areas and a disappointment in others. Overall, I recommend the game. With that said, this is the only one I did not finish, and completely lost interest in near the end.
The Good:
Better overall system than the previous games for character creation and management.
It's another Shadowrun game that we wouldn't have if it didn't exist.
It was fun to play until the last few missions of the campaign.
The Bad:
The changes to the Matrix are terrible. They made it into a hybrid between action and turn based. Not as fun as the previous games in my opinion.
Starting with Prosperity Tower, the missions became a slog. Way too complicated and too much potential fighting. Even when you skip most of that with the right build and decisions, it's still a ton of fighting. I quit playing near the end of that mission, having looked at the walkthroughs for what was ahead and deciding it wasn't worth it to keep going just to complete it.
Summary:
It started out great, and despite the story being a bit weak, it was fun for over 20 hours of play. Others may not have the same issues I did with the last few missions of the campaign. But, it felt like a completely different game at that point. If I hadn't looked at the walkthrough, I would have ended up in a lot more fights on the tower mission, and have gotten annoyed much sooner. It's worth playing. I just wish the end felt as fun as the rest of the game. If you manage to get past it, there are some post-campaign missions you can run to keep going also.

this is a really fantastic CRPG, it's not quite as deep or complex as some of the bigger budget CRPGs out there but it is SO well written, well presented, moody, atmospheric, and nails being both somber and lighthearted. theres some really great characters, incredible visuals, and moments you straight up cant get outside of shadowrun such as being hired by a rival company to sneak in and push things around in an office.
no seriously, your job is to move a floor panel, push a lamp over, rearrange a potted plant, just to mess up the feng shui and drive down profits from the workers being miserable

Well now I've completed the game for the third time (I also own it on the other gaming platform). Actually, I've now completed EACH of 3 Shadowrun games thrice XD
It's a wonderful mix of the great turn-based combat, cool role-playing system, one of the greatest RPG universes out there and great writing. By now I know each game by heart, but I keep coming for more. I've played almost every race and archetype and enjoyed it tremendously every time. Because all three games are really cool, each one in its own right.
I really hope that one day the developers will get back to their roots and make another one, using all their experience accumulated over the years.
Really envious of all turn-based RPG players who didn't play this one yet!
Very Good Classic Game
Revisiting this game after some years away. It's still good. The art is beautiful and atmosphere appropriately grim, with good music and well written text. A few issues are: The amount of text that needs to be read is demanding at times and I wish some of it could have been abridged. It's well written, but cuts into the game pacing at times. Also, some of the choices seem to be inconsequential and I can't help but feel that those dialogue choices might have been skipped over or maybe replaced with some options that mattered.
Not incredible, but a very solid and fun CRPG.
Definite recommend. Dragonfall may have had an overall better main campaign story but Hong Kong's campaign is still rather good. All the mechanics from the former Shadowrun games in this series are back with some enhancements. Every role and skill you invest in finds a use some way or another, as it does with most solid campaigns, with likable or at least interesting companions you can bring along to balance out your crew.
I come back to these CRPG games every few years and I'm so glad Shadowrun exists. This one is even better because the workshop gives you some top tier campaigns not officially in the game. There is a bunch of different ways to play, lots of lore and useful non-combat builds, and overall very fun gameplay.
4/5 stars, the game has so much in terms of roleplay and dialogue that the only thing I can begin to compare it to is baldurs gate 3 (but almost a decade earlier) It is however somewhat bug riddled and I would recommend saving often as some missions can soft lock. Its also rather RNG if you want to get the best possible ending as it requires you to do everything correctly ontop of some dialogue events that can fail to trigger due to bugs.
Huge Shadowrun fan, and a growing fan of Harebrained's writing. Out of the entire trilogy, though, I have to say this one is my favorite of them all. They all have their tone and vibe and feel, yeah, but Hong Kong by virtue-combination is the best both technically and writing wise. The story is immersive if you let it take you, some bugs and annoyances from the other two games are gone, and out of all the games so far, the squadmates are the best. Very good game

I'm glad that someone is doing something with the shadowrun license but this game is still a buggy mess. Even stuff as simple as skill checks frequently have dumb errors in them. I really can't recommend it.
Character portraits are amateur at best. The writing and world building are on some redditor garbage level dog ****. first what 5, 6 missions almost zero combat. not fun
It's exactly what the game should give to the players: a great narrative, immersive world, and some good dose of combat! Much love!
